THE COLLECTS - Proper 27 (Page 181 BCP) God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our Old Testament lesson the prophet proclaims

that the day of the Lord will be a day of deep gloom. God despises the ceremonies of his

people and calls for a continuous stream of justice and righteousness.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Claudette Griffith 11:00a.m. - Youth

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Amos 5:18-24

Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light; as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned with his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? "I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and cereal offerings, I will not accept them, and the peace offerings of your fatted beasts I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A prayer for help and vindication.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 70 (7:30a.m. - Page 555 BCP)

1. HASTE thee, O God, to deliver me : make haste to help me, O Lord. 2. Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul : let them be turned back-ward and put to confusion that wish me evil. 3. Let them for their reward be soon brought to shame : that cry over me, There, there. 4. But let all those that seek thee be joyful and glad in thee : and let all such as delight in thy salvation say alway, The Lord be praised. 5. As for me, I am poor and in misery : haste thee unto me, O God. 6. Thou art my helper and my redeemer : O Lord, make no long tarrying. REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul offers a vision of how the

dead in Christ will rise and then, together with those who are alive, be caught up to

meet the Lord in the sky.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Judith Yearwood 11:00a.m. - Youth

Page 3: The new fisherman november 9th, 2014

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

GRADUAL HYMN - 438

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel is the parable of the wise and foolish

maiden ---those prepared and unprepared for the bridegroom’s coming. In several ways

the details of the story may strike us as odd and even a little unfair, but such a concern

misses the main point which has much in common with other of Jesus’ parables. One

must at all times be ready with repentance and decision for the kingdom’s coming. In a

later period this story was read with allegorical overtones. Jesus is the bridegroom whose

return is delayed. Some in the church are falling asleep while others remain expectant.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus said, "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, `Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise replied, `Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.' But he replied, `Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Bidding Prayer

That we and all people may be always ready in service, let us pray to the Lord.

By grace may the lamp of faith be for ever burning brightly in the Church...Keep all Christian people alert for the coming of the Lord and fit to enter into his presence.

We pray for a more equal distribution of the goods of this world...We pray that ignorance may be dispelled by sound teaching and that folly may yield to wisdom, so that all may share in the heritage of creation.

Help us to be provident and generous in our use of money and in all our dealings with others... May the spirit of true charity prevail in our families and in all this community.

Look with mercy on all who are grieving for lost opportunities, and bring. New hope to their lives...Bring aid to the homeless and to all who feel themselves rejected by society.

1. Organizations are asked to start their planning for next year. This is to facilitate a meeting of the Pastoral Committee. 2. Persons needing envelopes for 2015 are asked to give their names to the Rector. 3. Thanks to all members who have adjusted to the monthly envelope system. This continues to be working well, as we have been able to reduce the cost of the envelopes and also the wastage. The persons responsible for the counting of money on Sundays are finding the job much easier. 4. We are in the process of assembling a tent to house the playground for the Day Care Centre. The tent has been donated by Mrs. Regine Sixt and her Charity “Drying Little Tears” will provide the equipment for the area.

Flower Show & Garden Festival 2015

The Garden Festival Committee is encouraged by your support and as we move steadily forward, the areas still available for sponsorship are listed below:-

10 Balcony Arrangements

1 Arrangement on the Landing (Upstairs) – approximately $800.00

4 Pillars approximately $150.00

We are also looking for sponsorship for newspaper and radio ads. The newspaper ad is approximately $1000.00 and the radio spots are approximately $250.00 per ad. Your participation in sponsoring either an arrangement or an advertisement for the festival is greatly appreciated.

Pink Sunday

The Third Sunday in Advent is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the lighting of the Rose Candle in the Advent Wreath. This year it is our intention to focus on the subject of Breast Cancer, which is a challenge for many women in our society and Church. It is

hoped that we will use ‘Pink’ as the liturgical colour for the day; with the Mothers’ Union donating a pink chasuble to be worn by the Clergy on the day. Two pink stoles, matching Burse and Chalice Veil will be much appreciated. With members wearing pink to show solidarity and prayerful support of sufferers. This gives a wonderful opportunity to bring our liturgy in line with this important aspect of human life. I am asking for your support in making this a meaningful celebration.

Casual Sunday

The Sunday before Christmas, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated as casual Sunday. We are invited to wear jeans and T/shirts.

WHY WEAR A POPPY

At the end of World War amid the ruins of Europe and the depressing social and economic conditions that left many soldiers crippled and destitute, a decision was made that resulted in the formation of The British Empire League. Its establishment in 1921-22 by General Smuts and Field Marshall Earl Haig was non-partisan and its Charter was “TO SEEK TO ENSURE THAT NO EMPIRE EX-SERVICEMAN OR WOMAN SHALL BE WITHOUT HELP IN TIME OF NEED”. In 1918 the Allies accepted the German surrender and this was called Armistice Day. This surrender was accepted at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and the survivors decided that would be a fitting day on which to remember their comrades. Poppies, which grow naturally across the blood soaked lands of France and the Benelux countries, symbolise PEACE, COMPASSION AND HOPE and were chosen to be used as a symbol of Remembrance for those who gave their lives. The red represents the blood that was shed, and the black centre, the grief experienced by all as a result .of war. The French Secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association. Mme Güerin, was the person who suggested that artificial poppies be made and sold to help ex-service men and their dependents in time of need.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Field the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders Field. Lieutenant Colonel

John McRae, MD (1872-1918)

Each year in Barbados the Remembrance Day Parade is held on the Sunday nearest to the 11th of November at the Cenotaph in Heroes Square. On the four sides of the Cenotaph are the names of Barbadian servicemen who lost their lives during the wars. It will be the responsibility of tomorrow’s adults to ensure that our society continues to remember those who fell, were maimed or were left alone. We also remember those Barbadians who were in the Merchant Navy and were responsible for the transport of food and materials across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Many sailors lost their lives when German U Boats sank their ships. The Barbados Legion, formed in 1957, was affiliated to the British Empire League, which changed Its name in 1959 to the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League and encompassed 54 member countries The Barbados Legion has its Headquarters at the Main Guard, Garrison, and currently has a membership of over 400. Approximately 200 are World War II veterans who served in the South Caribbean Force, the First Caribbean Regiment, the Trinidad Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve or the Army, Navy and Air Force of Great Britain or Canada. The Barbados Poppy League, which was established in 1922, is now the fund raising arm of the Barbados Legion, and is a vibrant organisation due to the involvement of volunteers from all walks of life ably assisted by the Girl Guides, Brownies, Cadet Corps and the Church Brigade as well as some of the Legionnaires themselves.

Smile: A man and a friend are playing golf one day at their local golf course. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer. His friend says, "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You truly are a kind man." The man then replies, "Yeah, well we were married 35 years."
