VOTE FOR ANY THREE CANDIDATES

Rhoda Overstreet-WilsonEli Hernandez Joseph SheppardEli is running for re-election and has been living in Auburn for the past 17 years with his wife Rina. His children, Enrique and Mariela, attend Owasco Elementary School. Eli was a student teacher and then a Spanish teacher for the Auburn Enlarged City School District from 2000 to 2010. While there, he created a chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society. He also served as the coach for both the modified cross country team and modified track & field team. Mr. Hernandez currently serves as the Principal of Delaware Primary School in the Syracuse City School District, where he is building a bilingual school. Eli's professional experiences as a teacher, administrator and community leader have enhanced his contributions to the school board and he believes he can continue to make a positive impact as a board member.

Joe Sheppard was born and raised in Auburn, graduating with the AHS Class of ’98. He attended one year at CCC before relocating to Milwaukee, WI where he attended the Professional Theatre Training Program graduating with a BFA and a concentration in Technical Production. Following undergrad he moved around the country working in various theatres and cities, eventually settling in Northern Virginia, where he had the opportunity to serve as the Technical Director for the Ford’s Theatre and assist with the management of a $25 million renovation. In 2014, Joe earned an MPA from George Mason University, concentrating in State and Local Government and Public Management. Following graduation he chose to return home to Auburn with his wife (AHS Class of ’99) and children (Ages 7 & 9) to give them the same opportunities he was afforded growing up. He is currently the Economic Development Technical Specialist with CEDA and volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America (Cubmaster Pack 11), the Auburn Players, and is currently raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He plans to use his position on the Board to focus on infrastructure, and fiscal matters, and to serve as an advocate for the arts.

Rhoda is a lifelong resident of Auburn. She and her husband, Roy Wilson, have two children (Jahmere and Dejuan Wilson) who both graduated from Auburn High School. Rhoda graduated from Auburn High, Cayuga Community College, Empire State College and Keuka College (with a Master's degree). Rhoda spent close to twenty years working with the disadvantaged and at-risk youth and families in the Juvenile Justice System. She currently teaches Sociology at Cayuga Community College and works part-time at the YMCA as a Building Supervisor. She is the Board President at Booker T. Washington Community Center, a Commissioner on the Cayuga Human Rights Commission Board, Secretary for the Auburn Branch of the NAACP, and a board member on the Harriet Tubman Center for Justice and Peace in Auburn. Rhoda will use her organic drive for advocacy and passion for youth to advocate for students in this district.

Odyssey of the Mind Results Congratulations to our two OotM teams who competed in the state competition on Saturday, April 8th! There were 242 teams competing with about 1,700 students from all over New York State. Both teams were from Owasco Elementary and did a great job of representing Auburn. Denise Bunker's team placed 13th out of 18 teams in their division for the problem, To Be Continued, A Superhero Cliffhanger. Beth Brown's team missed going to the world competition by one place. They took home 3rd place out of 19 teams! This team was the top scoring team from our region, and were one of only two teams from Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES to be recognized at the award ceremony. If you have the chance, stop and say congratulations to Beth (Genesee Elementary nurse) and her team at Owasco!
