COMEDY NIGHT

HOPE YOU DIDN’T MISS THE SENSATIONAL COMEDY NIGHT AT DIGGERS !

Club parents, supporters & friends enjoyed a sensational night of comedy that had the crowd buzzing.

The four comedians put on an hilarious show that had the crowd fully engaged and wanting more. We even involved an unwitting birthday group in the bistro area who enjoyed the attention.

These are great events for the club, not just as a fundraiser, but as a chance to catch-up with all the parents and supporters across the club. If you couldn’t make, you missed a memorable event. Thanks to all that attended and made it such a special night.

Special thanks to Laura for doing an enormous job in organising the event. Also, thanks to Andrew for volunteering to be the audience target for the comedians (but what an easy target!).

SUPER 8s TOURNAMENT - JACK JARRETT SHIELD

Despite the busy end-of-season period, and some unusual weather (that looked a bit like rain!), a large group of parents, supporters, Saints junior and senior players turned out last Sunday at Vale of Ah Reserve for our annual Super 8s tournament……with the winner receiving the coveted Jack Jarrett Shield.

Jack Jarrett is a much-loved member of the Saints family. Unfortunately, Jack lost his battle to illness a few years ago at a young age. The Jarrett family remain very much involved, and are great supporters, of Saints Cricket.

The jumping castles kept the younger kids occupied while our parents and supporters dusted off their cricket skills to the entertainment (and amusement?) of the spectators. Meanwhile our junior and senior players kept a straight face and provided the professionalism to their teams.

The coffee van was well patronised and the sausage sandwiches kept everyone going for the whole day.

These are the types of events that involves everyone at the club and helps to make Saints Cricket such a well-known family club. A big thanks to everyone involved with organising and running the day……these events don’t happen by themselves!

A special thanks to Dave Jarrett for coming down to present the trophy. Congratulations to our winners (….now if we could just locate that trophy…)

PINK STUMPS DAY - SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2018

It was a huge day down at Marco Reserve as Saints and Revesby Heights combined to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. The Sydney Pink Test highlighted the importance of raising funds to support families touched by breast cancer.

The U12s & U14s from both clubs showed their talent on the field while parents raised money at the BBQ, cake stall, selling raffle tickets and pink merchandise.

We raised approx. $3,500 on the day. Michael Sleiman, Daystar First National Real Estate Revesby, generously donated $1,000. The umpires from both matches also generously donated their match fees to the cause.

If you didn’t get the chance to donate on the day, you can still donate at our fundraising page. All funds donated online go directly to the McGrath Foundation.

Under 11s Round 12 - St Christopher’s U11 4-87 def Revesby Workers U11 75

MyCricket scorecard

Having had two handsome wins over Workers in our previous encounters this year, perhaps it was an overconfident St Christopher’s team that arrived at Playford Park on the first morning of our two-day match. Harry Divan won the toss and chose to bat. So far so good …… but then we started our innings.

A run out, a clean bowled, another run out, another clean bowled. We lurched from 3 for 5 to 4 for 12. Then Josh Agius joined Reagan Sidhu at the crease and steadied the ship. At the end of our overs, Reagan had reached 19 n.o. while Josh was able to retire on a masterful 30 n.o. including four 4s. Saints 4 for 87.

Workers first bat was restricted by the line and length of our bowlers who kept the ball on one side of the wicket. Some streaky boundaries were not enough to get the runs flowing and they finished day one on 4 for 45, the wickets being shared by Zach Agius, Max Zanbaka, Luca Croft and Harley Cutting.

On day two our bowlers continued to make break throughs but our accuracy faltered. Wicket to wicket bowling by Harley 2 for 4, Zach 2 for 5 (including a sharp caught & bowled) and Luca 2 for 6 (& 3 catches) saw us dismiss Workers for 75, which meant we were not called on to bat again. Their highest scorer (by a country mile) was sundries on 39 which included 11 no-balls and 17 wides.

Next week we meet Workers in the final. If we’re going to win a premiership, we’ll need to focus better with bat and ball. Batting: Josh Agius 30 ret. n.o., Reagan Sidhu 19 n.o.

Bowling: Harley Cutting 2/4, Zach Agius 2/5, Luca Croft 2/6 Player of the Match: Josh Agius

Under 12s Round 12 - Revesby Heights U12 5-200 def St Christopher’s U12 106

MyCricket scorecard

The first day of our game against Revesby Heights was Pink Stumps Day with both clubs coming together to raise funds for a worthy cause. It was a great morning with pink hats, pink stumps and even a pink ball to play cricket. One of the stumps didn’t last long with Paddy breaking it in half with a direct hit on the third ball of the innings.

However, after that it was our pink ball that copped some stick. Revesby openers blazed away to be 0-97 after 19 overs. After dismissing their openers, we were able to slow the run rate somewhat. However, were still left with the daunting task of chasing 200 runs. Wickets were taken by Lachlan, Lucas and Daniel.

Our batting showed glimpses of brilliance, but overall lacked application as too many batsmen gave away their wickets with lazy shots. Josh applied himself well for a top score of 23.

The boys are playing an elimination final this week and are looking forward to an improved performance. Batting: Josh Trevitt 23, Patrick. Forrester 13

Bowling: Lucas McAndrew 1/10, Daniel Louka 1/12, Lachie Burke 1/25 Player of the Match: Lucas McAndrew

Under 16s Round 12 - St Christopher’s 170 def Revesby Workers 109

MyCricket scorecard

We lost the toss and the opposition sent us in. We started a little scratchy being 6 for 52 after 15 overs at the first drink break. A 58 run partnership by Ethan Burke and Harry Anderson 17, and then followed by a 40 run partnership by Ethan and Stephen Coyne helped us get to a respectable score.

The opposition started positively and, after losing their first wicket for 14, they were 2 for 61 at drinks with their tails up. But credit to our bowlers and team who lifted their fielding to have Revesby bowled out for 109. The majority of our bowlers bowled well, but again Raul Konia was the pick of the bowlers 5 overs, 4 maidens none for 1, and very unlucky not to have had a few wickets.

Again, another solid performance by our team, well done boys keep it up. Batting: Ethan Burke 72

Bowling: Stephen Coyne 4 overs 2/11, Mark Walter 5 overs 2/8 Player of the Match: Ethan Burke

C Grade Round 14 - Belmore Rovers 235 def St Christopher’s 72

MyCricket scorecard

A rather fascinating season came down to the final match of the regular rounds. With Saints sitting in third place, four teams still had a shot of making the finals. Saints needed a win to guarantee a place in the finals, but could still lose and make it depending on other results. With so many permutations – and Sid pretending like he was on top of it all – the equation was simple: just win.

But it never turns out to be that easy, does it? Not only was the team short, half of the old guys (anyone over 35 obviously) were carrying age-related injuries. It promised to be an interesting game.

True to form, Saints won the toss and sent the opposition in to bat. Belmore were outstanding all season in the batting department, but with only seven players at the start of play, Saints fancied their chances. Things couldn’t have started any better, with Mitcho (4-40) removing half the team within the opening half-hour relying on some shifty slow pace bowling.

But it was at this point that Belmore dug in resolutely and obviously got on the phone to call in some reinforcements. A solid 100 run-odd partnership steadied the ship and by then the rest of their team had magically appeared like Santy when free drinks are on offer.

The remainder of the afternoon was a hard grind for Saints. Unfortunately, too many dropped catches gifted the opposition a significant amount of extra lives and runs. James (2-25) bowled with good fire and good length, picking up a few extra wickets. But one of Belmore’s batters in particular (who in all honestly should be playing up several grades) blasted a quick fire 75, to set a respectable 234 for Saints to chase down.

But it must be said that the ‘play of the day’ undoubtedly went to Pauly. Let me set the scene: it’s Pauly’s birthday, he’s playing keeper, his son Jai is bowling, and Pauly ain’t wearing a box. The slapstick writes itself. Needless to say, there was a 10 minute delay in proceedings while Pauly ensured that everything was where it should be. Half a box of Nurofen later, and he was just fine!

Unfortunately, there aren’t many highlights to report from Saints batting innings. Though Mitcho and Joel (24) got the team off to a solid - if unremarkable – start, things fell away quickly. It’s hard to call the opposition’s bowling disciplined (since they gave away 22 sundries), but they just kept drawing edges from every batter with every chance being taken. Saints were rolled for not very much after only a couple of hours of play on the second day.

Even despite the heavy loss, other results still ended up falling in Saints’ favour, meaning the team is off to the preliminary final next week. Not a bad result considering we finished dead last in 2017. We’ll have to put a bit of extra effort in if we want the result (and I stress ‘if’…), but the guys have never shied away from a challenge. Batting: Joel 24, Sundries 22

Bowling: Mitcho 4/40

B Grade Round 14 - St Christopher’s 382 def Panania EH RSL (2) 111

MyCricket scorecard

The Road Show that is B Grade keeps on going with another solid performance by the Boys. Divan after scoring 140 last game was dropped to 11, but he was happy to put his feet up and watch the boys put on a master class.

We had a 37 run opening partnership between Lambley and Wise before Lambley (15) fell. Phelps came to the crease and then Wise (28) was caught with the score on 111. Khoury came to the crease and put on a 120 partnership with Phelps before Khoury (50) was out.

Solway was next in and played a gem of an innings. By now the opposition was sick of Phelps hitting them all over the park. They hit a 97 run partnership before Solway (41) fell short of a deserved 50. Andrew Phelps came in to bat with his brother, who had just made 174 before getting hitting on the pads. Umpire Divan had no hesitation raising the finger.

We probably didn’t finish the game off as well as we should have. A Phelps 15, L Stocks 13, M Davidson 13, T Croft 4 and Divan 0 no With only facing 58 overs, we should have finished the day not out.

Bowling has improved over the last month, with Croft bowling a quick spell of 6 overs 1 for 9 and Lambley 5 overs 2 for 13. We had them on the back foot early and they didn’t recover. Divan and Stocks came into the attack, picking up a wicket each. Phelps 6 overs 3 for 7 and Davidson put the game to bed, all over in 31 overs and at the pub by 3.30.

We have a QF against Revesby this week after finishing the season in 3rd spot. We have won and lost a game against them this year so we will need to show up ready to play. They have a good bowling attack but we have the stronger batting line up.

Our top 6 batsmen have averages of 26, 27, 30, 34, 59 and 72 with 14 50s and 5 100s which is a pretty good effort, Our bowling has improved but the loss of Croft with a broken elbow is a big loss. However, we believe we have the guys capable to take the 10 wickets to get the job done. Batting: Cam Phelps 174, Anthony Khoury 50, Pete Solway 41

Bowling: Cam Phelps 3/7, Mick Lambley 2/13 Player of the Match: Cam Phelps
