COURSE OBJECTIVES

(Lecture Prof. Dr. Neumann) After this course, participants shall be able to:

4 Understand the functional architecture of the proximal femur and acetabulum.

4 Understand the role of the ligaments and capsule of the hip in providing stability to the joint.

4 Describe hip kinematics from both a femoral-on-pelvic and pelvic-on-femoral perspectives.

4 Understand the inter-relationships between movement and muscle actions of the hip and lumbar spine.

4 Cite primary functional role of the muscles of the hip, including how their function of each can be altered by biomechanical and physiologic variables (such as length, joint position, or leverage).

4 Understand how the position and stability of the hip influences the posture of the trunk and lower limb.

4 Understand the important role of the hip abductor muscles in generating forces and stabi-lity at the hip.

4 Day 2 - Have a clear understanding of the evidence based behind assessment of the hip joint and the surrounding musculature, how to assess the ROM of the hip joint and what are the constraints, how to assess for provocation of the hip joint, how to assess for peri-articular instability of the hip joint, how to assess the role of the medial musculature around the hip joint, how to assess the role of the anterior musculature around the hip joint, how to assess the role of the posterior & lateral musculature around the hip joint, and how to combine the assessment together to have a compressive evaluation of the hip

4 Day 3 – Have a clear understanding of what is the role of the kinetic chain and functional movement in assessing hip function, what are the treatment options, soft-tissue versus manual therapy, to be able to demonstrate how to effectively load the medial hip compartment, how to effectively load the anterior hip compartment, how to effectively load the posterior-lateral compartment and how to put the assessment and treatment options together in a case study review.
