  • The Giving Tree This kit includes the book the Giving Tree by Leh Darion and lesson plan. The Giving Tree story focuses on the boyhood reminisces of Moushoom as he describes finding the "Great Giving Tree" with his mother and father. Emphasis is on Metis core values and beliefs, most importantly, the connection between the Creator and Mother Earth. Extension activities for this kit are based on The Creator's 12 gifts: tolerance, respect, love, kindness, strength, sharing, balance caring, courage, honesty, Mother Earth, and patience.

    The Medicine Wheel: Stories of a Hoop Dancer This kit includes the book The Medicine Wheel: Stories of a Hoop Dancer by Teddy Anderson and lesson plan created by Medicine Wheel Education. “Medicine Wheel: Stories of a Hoop Dancer” encourages children to connect with the symbol and understand inclusion of all cultures by learning along with this young boy and his friends who come to hear the story from across the world.

    The Sharing Circle This kit includes the book The Sharing Circle by Theresa “Corky” Larsen-Jonasson and lesson plan created by Medicine Wheel Education. In this story two red foxes have an argument which breaks apart their community, when this happens a gentle buffalo decides to take a braid of sweetgrass to a local elder and asks her to help with a sharing circle for all the animals. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a Sharing Circle and explore their thoughts and emotions through writing and drawing.

  • Totem Tales This kit includes the book Totem tale: a tall story from Alaska by Deb Vanasse, reader’s theater script, and puppets. In this story the wooden animals in a totem pole spring to life one night and fall into an argument over what order to stack themselves in again. Students are able to engage with the material by participating in a reader’s theater using character puppets from Native Northwest.

    Dawn Flight This kit includes the book Dawn Flight by Kevin Locke and lesson plan created by Medicine Wheel Education. Dawn Flight is a Lakota story. Long ago, when a great flood cleansed the land of unhappiness, the Grandfather sent Wanjblí the eagle to save one virtuous member of the human race and teach her how to live a good life. The eagle is a powerful symbol of courage, wisdom, and strength. In Kevin’s book he shares an inspiring vision of unity and hope for a new generation teaching children to recognize the eagle in themselves and others and always to soar above the darkness into the light.

    Her Seven Brothers This kit includes the book Her Seven Brothers by Paul Goble, lesson plan created by Mamele’awt Aboriginal Education Centre, and artifacts relating to the story. Her Seven Brothers is a Cheyenne legend of the creation of the big dipper.

  • Kumak’s Fish This kit includes the book Kumak’s Fish by Michael Bania, and lesson plan created by Mamele’awt Aboriginal Education Centre. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a cultural activity by making their own Inuit snow goggles using the supplies in the kit. In this story on a beautiful Arctic morning Kumak and his family go ice fishing, Kumak hooks what seems like an enormous fish, and the entire village gets involved. Together they discover that when they work together the rewards are great.

    Little Bear’s Vision Quest This kit includes the book Little Bear’s Vision Quest by Diane Silvey and lesson plan created by Mamele’awt Aboriginal Education Centre. Little bear lives along the Northwest coast. He behaves in a selfish manner by being inconsiderate to his friends. In order to teach Little Bear about proper behaviour and respect his grandfather sends him away to an island. Little Bear is given advice by being told to "look inside" and learn a lesson from his bad behaviour. Little Bear finally learns about how he hurt his friends' feelings and makes the decision to change how he treats others. His family finally, in the end, welcomes Little Bear home. This book teaches values to young children through the teaching of traditional storytelling.

    Return of the Buffalo This kit includes the book the Return of the Buffaloes by Paul Goble and Lesson plan created by Mamele’awt Aboriginal Education Centre. This is a Plains story about famine and renewal of the earth. It is based on Based on a Lakota legend in which a mysterious woman returns the buffalo and the other animals to the people. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a cultural activity by making their own Parfleche.

  • Raven’s Feast This kit includes the book Raven’s Feast by Kung Jaadee and lesson plan created by Medicine Wheel Education. In this story Raven Yaahl) creates the world and after he is finished creating the world, he realizes that he’s lonely, so he invites the whole world to join him in Haida Gwaii for the greatest feast imaginable.
