una vez
un rbol...
Once upon a time, there was a tree...
Que amaba a
un pequeo nio.
That loved
a little boy.
Y todos los das
el nio
vena Every day
the boy
would come.
y
recoga
sus
hojas. And
gather
its
leaves.
para hacerse con ellas una
corona y jugaba a ser el
Rey del bosque.
to make a crown so
he would play to be
the king of the
forest.
l trepaba por su tronco,
He would climb up its trunk,
se meca en sus ramas
and swing from its branches
y coma
sus manzanas.
he would eat
its apples.
Y ellos jugaban
al escondite.
And they would play
hide and seek.
Y, cuando el nio estaba
cansado, dorma bajo la
sombra del rbol.
When
the boy
was tired,
he would sleep
in its shade.
Y el nio amaba al rbol
The boy loved the tree
mucho, mucho.
Y el rbol era feliz.
very much.
And the tree was happy.
Pero el tiempo pas.
The time went by.
Y el nio creci.
And the boy grew up.
Y poco a poco, el rbol se
fue quedando solo.
So the tree became lonely.
Pero un da, al rbol vi venir a su nio y le dijo:
Then one day the tree saw the boy coming andtold him:
Ven, Nio, sbete a mi tronco y mcete en mis ramas y come mis manzanas y juega bajo mi sobra y s feliz.
Boy, come and climb up my trunk, swing from my branches, eat my apples, play in my shade and be happy.
Ya soy muy grande para trepar y jugar, dijo el chico.The boy said: I am too big toclimb up and play.
Yo quiero comprar cosas y divertirme,
y para ello necesito dinero. T podras darmelo?
I want to buy things and have fun. I need somemoney. Could you give me some?
Lo siento, dijo el rbol,pero yo no tengo dinero.
Im sorry, said the tree, I havent gotany.
Slo tengo hojas y manzanas. Pero...I only have got leaves and apples. But...
Llevate mis manzanas, nio, y vndelas en la ciudad. As tendrs dinero y sers feliz.
Take my apples, sell them in the city.Then you will get some money
and you will be happy.
Y el rbol se sinti feliz.
The tree felt happy.
Entonces el nio
trep al rbol, arranc sus
manzanas y se las llev con l.
So the boy climbed up the tree,
gathered its apples
and carried them away.
Pero pas mucho tiempo y su nio no volva...
The boy didnt come backfor a long time...
y el rbol estaba triste. and the tree felt terribly sad.
Y entonces, un da, regres y el rbol tembl de alegra y le dijo:
One day the boy came back andthe tree shook whith joy and said:
Ven, Nio, trepa a mi tronco, mcete en mis ramas y s feliz. Come boy, climb up
my trunk, swing from my branchesand be happy.
Yo estoy demasiado ocupado para trepar rboles, dijo l. I am too busy to climb up trees, said the boy.
Necesito una casa que me sirva de abrigo, pues quiero una esposa e hijos, y para eso necesito una casa. Puedes t darmela?
I need a home to keep me warm he said. I want a wife and children, that is why I needa home. Can you give me one?Yo no tengo una casa, dijo el rbol.El bosque es mi hogar, pero t puedes cortar mis ramas y hacerte con ellas una casa para tu familia. Ive got one, said the tree. The forestis my home, but you may cut off all my
branches and build yours for your family.Entonces sers feliz.
Then you will be happy.
Y, as, l cort sus ramas
y se las llev con l para
construir su casa.
And so he did,
he cut off all
its branches,
and carried them
away to build
his home.
Y, el rbol,
se sinti feliz.
The tree felt happy.
Pero pas mucho tiempo y su nio no volva. Y cuando regres, el rbol estaba tan feliz
que apenas pudo hablar con dificultad:
The boy didnt came back for a long time. So when he return, the tree was so
happy it could hardly speak.
Ven Nio, dijo con un susurro. Ven y juega.
Come boy, it whispered, come and play.
Estoy muy viejo y triste para jugar, dijo l.
I am too old and sad to play, said the boy.
Quiero un barco que me lleve lejos de aqu. Puedes tu darme un barco?
I want a boat to take me away from here.
Could you give me one?
Corta mi tronco y constryete un barco,
dijo el rbol.
Entonces podrs navegar
hacia lugares lejanos...
y sers feliz.
Cut down my trunk and make it,
said the tree.
Then you can sail away...
and be happy.
El nio cort el tronco del rbol.
And so the boy did, it cut its trunk down.
Construy con l un barco y
naveg hacia lugares lejanos.
Built the boat and sailed away.
Y el rbol se sinti feliz...
And the tree was happy...
pero no realmente.
but not really.
Y despus de mucho tiempo su nio volvi de nuevo.
The boy came back again after a long time.
Lo lamento, Nio, dijo el rbol, pero ya no tengo nada que darte.
I am sorry, boy, said the tree,
I have nothing left to give you.
Ya no me quedan manzanas. My apples are gone.
Mis dientes son muy dbiles para comer manzanas- le contest. My teeth are too weak for apples, said the boy.
Ya no me quedan ramasdijo el rbol,ya no podrs mecerte en ellas.My branches are gone, said the tree.You cannot swing from them.
Estoy muy viejo para columpiarme en las ramas respondi l. I am too old to swing from branches , said the boy.
Mi tronco ya no est, no podrs treparlo dijo el rbol. My trunk is gone , said the tree. You cannot climb up.
Estoy muy cansado para trepar - le contest. I am too tired to climb up , said the boy.
Lo siento se lament el rbol. Ojal pudiera darte algo... pero ya no me queda nada.
I am sorry , sighed the tree. I wish I could giveyou something... but I have nothing
left to give.
Soy solo un viejo tocn. Lo siento..
I am just an old stump. I am sorry...
Yo no necesito mucho ahora, contest l, solo un lugar tranquilo donde sentarme y descansar.
I dont need very much now , said the boy, just a quietplace to sit down and rest.
Estoy muy cansado. I am too tired.
Bien, dijo el rbol reanimndose y se enderez tanto como pudo. Si es as, un tronco cortado y viejo es bueno para sentarse y descansar.
Fine, said the tree, encouraging itself andstraightening as much as it could,
well, an old stump is goodfor sitting and resting.
Ven nio, sintate. Sintate y descansa.Come, boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.
Y l se sent. And so the boy did.
Y el rbol fue feliz.
And the tree was happy.
