Well here we are at the end of 2019 and our market remains strong. It appears by all indicators that it will remain that way well into 2020. This also applies to your Master Builders Association. We have had a great year of identifying the role that the MBA plays in supporting the needs of our members in the future. Our Strategic Plan has brought to light many issues that have not been so obvious in the past. Here are some examples. You will see the MBA improve the promotion of its value to our communities and its members. We have contributed to many community events in the past but with very little recognition for our efforts. We will increase our promotion of what you as member offer to your buyers and clients, with the intention of separating your company from those who do not have the insight to invest and participate in our industry.

The MBA will also be addressing the labor shortage issue by creating new incentives for young people to consider working in our industry, and increasing our participation in all programs that focus on residential and remodeling education.

We will also be increasing our efforts in promoting the new Building Industry Association of Washington’s (BIAW) Certified Builder Program. This is the first step in our participation in having a say in how the inevitable mandatory general contractor state licensing program is formatted.

We realize the value that our younger contractors bring to our Association, however, their participation appears to require a different approach as to how the MBA accommodates their schedules. As a result, we have now initiated our first Young Professionals Council.

As one of our most successful events in the past, we are now in the midst of reviving a Street of Dreams. This has been slated for 2021 and we are currently initiating its planning phase. This event will help to establish our credibility with the public as the residential building authority in Pierce County.

I want to close by saying that it has been my privilege to serve as your 2019 President. Thank you to our Staff, Executive and Finance Committees, and our Board of Directors for your hard work and support. I am proud to have been part of what we have accomplished this year. I am also confident that your 2020 leadership team will continue to increase the MBA’s value and influence for you and your communities.

GLP, LLC

The past 12 months provided challenges and many accomplishments for the MBA. Our members were essential in achieving all that the MBA has achieved over the past year. The MBA’s staff have also been instrumental to many of the changes and growth we have seen this year.

I would like to thank those companies and individual members who have served on our Board of Directors, Committees, have sponsored events, donated personal funds, volunteered time at various events/meetings to help make them successful, have spent time recruiting new members and spreading the word about our association, have taken the time to attend various meetings with public officials in an effort to improve the regulatory atmosphere for the building industry in Pierce County, and any member who gave their time to help the MBA remain a relevant and powerful trade association in Pierce County.

I am excited to work with each of you and continue to improve how the MBA can serve its members, your consumers and our local communities. Please feel free to contact me with ideas, questions or any feedback you may have. I strongly believe in the idea that no matter where we are as an association, we can always strive to improve and better serve our members.

What has the MBAPC’s Government Affairs program and its active members accomplished this year?

• Testified at County and City Councils and Planning Commissions on a variety of issues.

• Hosted MBA Development Officials’ Forum meetings at which MBAPC members could meet face to face with City and

Young Professionals Council (YPC) is a networking group that empowers young leaders and professionals in the housing industry. For the first gathering of 2019, the group enjoyed a “Day at the Races” at Emerald Downs racetrack in Auburn, Wash. on Saturday, September 14th. Those in attendance viewed the races from a private suite while networking with fellow industry professionals. The council is hoping their events will help fellow young professionals make connections and strengthen the future and legacy of MBA Pierce.

The Young Professionals Council is planning to hold three events in 2020: March 20th, July 17th, and Nov. 6th. Young Professional Council events are tailored (but not exclusive) to those under 45 years old. Events are open and encouraged for guests (non-members) to attend. If you are interested in joining YPC, visit www.mbapierce.com/councils-committees.

Member Recognition Awards & President’s GalaMBA Pierce held its annual President’s Gala and Member Recognition Awards on Thursday, December 12th, 2019 at Historic 1625 Tacoma Place. This is a special event for MBA Pierce that celebrates the installation of 2020 board members and leadership, and also recognizes outstanding members. The President’s Gala is a night where we say thank you and farewell to the outgoing MBA President Gary Patterson, and welcome the incoming 2020 MBA President Scott Walker.

In 2019, MBA Pierce awarded five scholarships of $2,500 each to students seeking a career in the building industry.

The evening’s “Dessert Dash” sponsored by AAA KARTAK Glass

& Closet Corp. and Parker, Smith & Feek is a way for the association to raise funds for the MBA Pierce scholarship program. This year the association raised nearly $20,000 to go toward the program in 2020! We would like to thank all of our members for their generous contributions and support.

Government Affairs

MBA Pierce has created an Engineers’ Forum for local engineers and geotechnicians to meet quarterly and share issues they are having through-out Pierce County, whether it be with jurisdictional staff or code interpretations, with our builder and developer members.

The first Forum meeting was held on October 29, 2019. Several engineers and geotechnicians participated, identifying several issues, rule conflic-tions, and redundancies that need to be addressed in the County. Several MBA members have volunteered to take those identified issues forward to get them solved with appropriate

jurisdictional staff or through the various partnership groups they sit on. These members know that engineers and geotechs come across issues early and often times before builder members are able to discover them.

Through time and involvement, Susie has learned the effectiveness of networking along the way.

How did Susie first learn of MBA Pierce? “I made a cold call to the MBA—the Executive Officer at the time invited me to lunch and I discovered what the MBA stood for; what it does for our community, and the networking opportunities,” Susie said. “I joined that same afternoon!”

While many MBA Builder members see immediate buy-in through acceptance with R.O.I.I. Select or GRIP rebate programs, some members find their most coveted benefit being MBA Pierce’s many

networking opportunities. Susie began her long service in the MBA years back, and now continues to serve in membership, education, and as a Board Member.

The first event Susie jumped into was the MBA Annual Auction. “I didn’t know anyone at first -- it was uncomfortable,” Susie said. “But by getting involved, I soon got to know the other members.” Even though she admits her success didn’t happen overnight, she also said the benefits in time far outweighed the work she put in. “I knew that to be successful, I would have to help MBA and its members be successful,” Susie explained. “I also knew that every strong relationship is built on a solid foundation. To develop that solid foundation the member-customer came first, and the sale would follow.”

What advice does Susie have for new members? “Roll up your sleeves and get involved

right away…Don’t worry about the sale,” Susie said. “It will come as you develop genuine lasting relationships.”

After 24 years in the MBA and 17 years as her company owner, Susie is still a proud business owner today.

“I owe a lot of my success to the MBA and its members, many of whom are my friends now,” Susie said. “I have seen kids grow up and now insure generations of members -- that is the best compliment a business owner could receive!”

Finally, when asked how all industry businesses can benefit from membership with Master Builders Association of Pierce County, Susie responded:

“All members benefit for the legislative accomplishments, even if they’re not contractors. The information and knowledge gained by being involved helps me to understand my clients and how I can help them better. It makes me a better insurance broker. You can only gain that knowledge through membership and being involved.”
