Bites of Bread from Bob “Money is the root of all evil.” While close (The Bible actually says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.”), it qualifies as one more in the series of statements that have been falsely attributed to the Bible. By subtracting the three little words “The love of” from I Timothy 6:10, the meaning of the verse is greatly changed. Throughout the Bible, money is a neutral medium. It is how we use, horde and/or our attitude toward money that receives so much attention in scripture. Money is a resource that when channeled in the proper way can bring about tremendous good. Money is also a resource that when not handled prop-erly can cause an incredible amount of harm or “evil.” I Timothy 6:10 mentions the top two topics of scripture: love and money. The number one topic is love. Jesus tells us that the top two commandments are about love. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The second most mentioned topic is money or possessions. 16 of Jesus’ 38 par-ables relate to this topic. 1 out of 10 verses in the gospels mention this as well. The Bible devotes 500 verses on prayer, fewer than 500 verses on faith, but over 2,000 verses on money and possessions.

In one of the many verses related to money, Jesus gives us a clue to why it is so important. In Matthew 6:19 we read the words of Jesus: “For where your

treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The use of and our attitude toward money directs our hearts in a way that few other things can do. A few verses later, Jesus states, “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” One of the temptations that money can bring into our lives is that of living self-

centered lives versus God-centered lives. Money can lead us to believe we are self-made and self-sufficient. It can lead us to believe money

is the answer to all the problems in our life. Take a moment to reflect on the message advertising gives us. Advertising tells us that if we buy whatever prod-uct it is selling, our life will be better, more fulfilled, happier, etc. That kind of thinking leads us away from a love of God as the source of all that is good. The love of God begins to be replaced by the love of money.

Advertising tells us that we need more “stuff,” but what we really need is more of God and the content-ment that comes along with that. Our goal in life should be to become rich...in God.

Children and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Vacation Bible School is a great way for us to reach out to our neighbors with the Word of God. VBS is a long-standing summer tradition in our church because we love to share Jesus with God’s children. It takes many hands, prayers and hours of preparation.

This outreach would not be possible without the dedi-cation of our volunteers. I would like to thank Dena Turner and Betty Charnholm for heading up SonRise National Park VBS this year. I would also like to thank all the wonderful volunteers for their time: Judy Brown, Sandra Gross, Nancy Stebbins and Joyce Zook for helping with the preparations; Kim Resch and Allison Pfaff for teaching our daily lessons in the Bible Center; Shannon Endler, Robin Bigham, Mary Ann Smith and Tina Cox for crafts; Bob Hanna and Joe Dyer for games; Ila Russell, Becky Johnson, Bob & Janet Schafer and Julie Hanna for providing our snacks; Doug & Lorna Johnson, Chris Skoog and Dena Turner for providing our skits; Christine Sinibaldi for teaching and leading us in music; Shelli McKenzie and nieces for teaching the preschool group; Margaret Cleveland, Zoe Austin, Kim Otis, Lilly Austin, Nancy Stebbins, Ivory Austin for leading our children to their rotations; Patti Harris, Madyson Jones and Karen Engelke for “floating” to where they are needed; and Teri Garland for taking pictures. If you have not signed your children up for VBS, now is the time so we can get our group lists made. It starts Sunday, July 21, with a big family BBQ and camping games in our parking lot at 4:30 pm. Son-Rise National Park runs each night, Sunday through Thursday, from 6:00-8:30 pm. Registration is easy and costs very little. If you don’t have a child ages 3 years old-5th grade, then ask a neighbor if you can bring their children. We can’t wait to POINT KIDS TO JESUS!

Flurries from Chris It is with a heavy heart and a bit of excitement that I have accepted the call to serve North Hill Christian Church in Spokane, WA as their pastor. My last Sunday here at First Christian Church will be July 21. I came to this decision with much prayer and conver-sation with my wife, Jenn. Through prayer I have found God is continually leading me into serving as a pastor of a church and we believe that God is calling me to serve at North Hill Christian Church.

We will miss all of you in Salem because you have impacted our lives and have left a lasting mark on who we are. I will miss the youth here after being able to call them my youth for the past 3 years. I have cared about where they are headed in life and that they continue to seek to know God. I will miss the volunteers who have sought to serve this community, as they are the ones who have made dreams come to reality. The actions of our volunteers have spurred on programs that have grown beyond the walls of our church and have planted seeds in other congregations. I will miss the prayer warriors who are constantly praying for the entire life of this congregation seeking to keep God as our focus in all that the church does. I will miss all of you as your presence here in this church continues to have an impact on the identity of this congregation.

As Jenn and I prepare to take on this new adventure in life, we will continue to think and pray for you, and we ask that you do the same for us. I will remem-ber the things that you have taught me during my time here. I hope that you may all continue to support one another and especially the young people of this congregation who are the present and future of the church.

“May the Lord Bless and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:22-26)

This is our annual “kick-off” get-together before beginning our CWF Fall meetings.

We encourage everyone to come and bring a friend. This is a wonderful chance to make new friends and see old acquaintances.

Transportation will be provided, leaving from the church and return.

Horseback Riding at Flying M Ranch Saturday, August 17

We are taking the church bus to the Flying M Ranch (out of Yamhill) for horseback riding in the foothills of the coast range. We are leaving the church at 8:00 am, returning around 4:00 pm. You will need to bring a sack lunch.

The cost is $30 and 24 spots available. To reserve a spot please call the church or sign-up at the Informa-tion Center. People of all ages are encouraged to par-ticipate. There is a 230 lb. weight limit and children need to be at least 6 years old.

15th Annual Max Meek Hike Saturday, August 24 8:30 am leave from the church

This year’s Max Meek Hike will be to Drift Creek Falls on the coastal side of the Cascade Mountains. It is a family-friendly, 3-mile, round-trip hike to Drift Creek Falls that includes crossing an awesome sus-pension bridge. Please call the church to sign-up or sign-up at the Information Center so we can arrange transportation. You will need to bring a sack lunch.

Riverfront Family Fest Sponsored by Family Building Blocks Saturday, August 3 10:00 am-2:00 pm, Riverfront Park in Salem

A free event with fun activities including: dancing, music, stories, crafts and much more.

Kids and parents learn about water safety, health and hygiene, healthy eating, fire safety and more.

Check It Out! Last Sunday Pastor Doug Dornhecker challenged us to read the scriptures again and be convicted of God’s desire for us to love Him and love our neighbors.

Upon reflection I am reminded of the number of biographies in our Church library about people who, against all odds, lived out God’s law to love Him above all else and to love and help their neighbors.

Reading stories about these bold and courageous peo-ple can sometimes help us to “BEE inspired.” Other books in our library may help us to “BEE prayerful” or to “BEE a giver.” So make a “BEE line” to your Church Library and “BEE a reader” this summer.
