Tuesday Evening Prayer Service - 6:45 pm, Chapel Each week will have a different approach to prayer. Tuesday, March 19, we will have a contemplative prayer service - “a time of peace and prayer.” It will be a time of prayer in song, silence, listening and candlelight as we seek the presence and peace of God in our lives.

Sundays during Lent The focus is on the Spiritual Disciplines of Prayer and Meditation, Fasting, Simplicity, Solitude, and Service.

Bites of Bread from Bob This Sunday will be the second Sunday of Lent, dur-ing which we are focusing on Spiritual Disciplines. (Insert the words “Practices” if the word Discipline is too scary.) In the area of exercise, I have always held to the thought of “No pain; no gain.” That is not the attitude we should have toward the Spiritual Disciplines. The more difficult it is for us, the more likely will not sustain what we are doing. Find spiritual disciplines that work for you. We should never try to compare what we do with what others are doing. The goal of the Spiri-tual Disciplines is transformation of our lives. We are desiring for our lives to become more like that of Jesus Christ.

This Sunday the focus will be upon fasting. In the book of Isaiah, God actually criticizes their fasting practices. Fasting was not changing the way they treated one another. It reads, “On the day of your fasting, you do as you please.” (58:3) God offers them a more acceptable fast. “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter —when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your

own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.” (Isaiah 58: 6 - 9)

In light of this accept-able fast, we are encour-aging everyone to help “share your food with the hungry” one or all of these ways:

• If you fast, bring the food or money saved for Marion-Polk Food Share to church on March 17 (the Sunday we will look at the Spiritual Practice of “Service.”

• Make a donation to Marion-Polk Food Share in honor or memory of someone. The form is inserted in this newsletter.

• Become a sustained giver for Marion-Polk Food Share in honor or memory of someone informa-tion can be found at the Information Center).

February 24– Pastor Bob Hanna Genesis 3:1 - 13, “What Do You Crave?” The Spiritual Practice of fasting brings to our atten-tion the thing or things we crave the most.

March 3– Pastor Bob Hanna Matthew 5:25-34, “The Practice of Simplicity.” In our consumer-driven culture and economy, there is the constant push for more and more. In the culture of God’s kingdom, less is often more.

Check It Out! As we move into this season of Lent and the sermon series, “Spiritual Disciplines,” be reminded that your Church library has a wide variety of books to enhance your understanding and practice of the disciplines. A number of these books have been placed on the back shelf of the library for your reading convenience. Do check them out!

In addition, look at the books on the shelves labeled Prayer and Devotion. As you here books you may find one that will invite you to stretch your prayer practice. Other books for the Easter season, such as Max Lucado’s, “Six Hours One Friday,” have been set face forward here and there on the shelves so you may find them easily. It is my prayer that one of these books will bless you richly.

Thank You I want to thank all of you for all of the cards, letters prayers and concerns for me while I was ill and as I am still recovering. It is hard to explain how very meaningful they have all been. It was more helpful than you know. You are truly a loving church. And if you miss us for the next few weeks, it is not because I am having problems again, but we will be enjoying the warm weather on a short vacation. Thank you again for everything you do.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Working on my Sunday school lesson about praying this week, I wondered, “How can something so simple be so difficult?” I've noticed that a lot of my Sunday school students pray mostly at dinner. When asked to volunteer to pray in class, most kids will begin with "Thank you for this food." We talk about prayer a lot in class, and we have practiced different ways of praying, but for Sunday's class I wanted to emphasize that prayer isn’t only for dinner or bed-time; we can talk to God any time.

Many of the children know what instant messaging and texting are, so I asked: “Did you know prayer is the original instant messaging?” Some wanted to argue with that, “Nuh-uh, Laurie, cuz texting’s been around a long time…since before I was born!” Others got it right away: “Yeah, because God can read your thoughts!” Right! So why don’t we use that more often? Distraction: ever notice how hard it is to talk to someone when they are distracted? We fill that space up with everything but God, and instead of praying, our mind flitters off to other shiny things that distract us.

I shared the book, Praying in Color, Kid’s Edition, by Sybil MacBeth. It’s a wonderful book that uses doodling as a tool to help kids focus the mind and pray. I used one of the techniques recently when the kids were disappointed that our family plans fell through. We made a cloud that said “Blessings” and drew raindrops around the page listing our blessings. It helped us discover that had we been gone, as planned, we wouldn’t have been home to save our neighbor’s dog from getting hit on the highway. If we continue to share the gift of prayer with our children, it will become a lifetime habit.

Flurries from Chris Over the past month I have the joy of attending three different regional youth events with youth from our church and around Oregon. Over the weekend of January 25-27 Jenn and I took four of our youth along with youth from Silverton and Murray Hills Christian Churches to Hood River for the annual High School Snow Rally. As we were separated into small groups, we were tasked with diving into the Micah 6:8 scripture text and to identify ways that we can live out the words of what the Lord requires of us: “To do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

The second event was over the weekend of February 8-10 where our middle school youth attended the Chi Rho Mid-Winter retreat that was hosted by Lebanon First Christian Church. I took four of our youth down to Lebanon where we were able to listen to Rev. Eric Eide talk about the two greatest commandments through the telling of stories. A large focus of the weekend was to learn to love ourselves as we are so that we may be more capable of loving others.

Finally, this past weekend I took three of our youth to Silverton for the annual Regional Prom on the night of the 16th. Our youth joined with other churches in the region to have a great time with dancing and fellowship. At the end of the night the youth had a time of worship led by Rev. Dr. Cathy Meyers-Wirt, who talked about how we are all con-nected and that the regional events and camp that we attend are meant to be ways of keeping us connected through our shared experiences of God.

The next planned regional youth event will be Church Camp. This year our middle school and high school youth will be attending camp at the same time at Suttle Lake Camp. The dates for Middle School and High School camp are July 28-August 2.

Fasting for the Food Bank "Fighting Hunger One Meal at a Time "is the theme of our Sunday, February 24, Lenten observation, focusing on the spiritual discipline of fasting.

The time-tested practice of fasting is an important aspect of spiritual enrichment and combines the idea of limiting food for a short period of time while increasing meditation and prayer. As a congregation we can make a difference in the problem of hunger in our community while we fast. The idea is simple. Donate money not spent on food to Marion-Polk Food Share. Families are hungry and the need is critical as never before. We can help.

Check the bulletin boards for 10 most wanted items and bring your food offerings to place in the bins. Also, consider a sustained membership to Marion-Polk Food Share by pledging year-round support. As always, cash contributions and designated pledges offer maximum clout to the food bank, as they pro-vide purchasing power for bulk supplies. A dedica-tion of accumulated funds, gifts, and collected food will be observed in a mid-March worship service.

State of Oregon Energy Tax Credits Available

The church has unused tax credits for the insulation installed over the Sanctuary. Individuals, partner-ships or corporations may be eligible to purchase our credits and use them to directly offset Oregon state income taxes. The total of the (tax) credits spread over five tax years is $38,308 which would be pur-chased for $27,910, a substantial discount. This amount can be split between multiple purchasers. The purchase amount comes directly to the church, with a processing fee deducted by the state. If you are interested in obtaining more information to discuss your options and costs with the Oregon Department of Energy or with your tax consultant, contact Gene Clemens at 503-393-4366 or mack_clemens@yahoo.com for the church’s applica-tion number and a contact name and phone number at the Department of Energy. CWF Rosa Page Welch Group asking Support for Service Project Leslie Mudge, daughter-in-law to Gary & Sharon Mudge, is a US Army Nurse in Afghanistan. She works in a program that sends nurses to villages to teach basic healthcare, prenatal care, and midwifery.

Leslie requested donations of baby flannel receiving blankets, baby hats, antibacterial bars of soap, crayons, pencil tablets and drawing pads for children which will be given to the people she is teaching.
