Bites of Bread from Bob Mardi Gras gets all the press. There are parades in the streets of places like New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro. But Mardi Gras is actually the precursor to Lent. Mardi Gras (also called Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday) was a way of removing from the house those things people would fast from during Lent. Lent is the 40-day period leading up to Easter (Sundays excluded). Several special 40-day periods are noted in the Bible. Jesus fasted 40 days and nights; it rained 40 days and 40 nights before The Great Flood; Moses was on Mt. Sinai 40 days receiving the 10 commandments.

This year the period of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 13, on what is called Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on foreheads as a sign of repentance for sin. The period of Lent has been a time when Christians focus on spiritual growth. This year our focus at Salem First Christian Church will be on Spiritual Disciplines. Spiritual Disciplines are tools Christians have used through the centuries to open themselves up to the presence of God in their lives. They are a way to get closer to the person God created you to be. Don’t let the term “Disciplines” be intimidating. If we were to measure how spiritual we are by how much time we spend on our knees or

reading the Bible, the Pharisee always wins. People can be very disciplined but remain proud and spiteful. Our goal is not just to “try harder” but rather to step into the flow of God’s Spirit. Because God has created us as unique individuals, some tools will work better than others. Therefore, we will be looking at a good variety of ways for you to try. On

Sundays we will be looking at prayer, meditation, fasting, simplicity, solitude, service and celebra-tion. On Tuesdays we are placing a

special focus on our Tuesday evening prayer time (6:45 pm in the Chapel). Each week will have a different approach to prayer. On Tuesdays, February 19 and March 19, we will have a contemplative prayer service - “a time of peace and prayer.” It will be a time of prayer in song, silence, listening and candlelight as we seek the presence and peace of God in our lives.

See the Lenten Calendar insert for other Lenten activities.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

The annual offering supports immediate responses and ongoing needs such as agriculture, preventive medicine and economic development in impoverished areas. Week of Compassion always has needs for a strong annual offering in February.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Good News: SPRING IS COMING! Isaiah 43:18-19 says: “Do not call to mind former things or ponder things of the past. 19: Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it?”

Down in the ground, little seeds have sprouted and are ready to move towards the sun, to grow and one day burst forth from the surface with new life. I acci-dentally stepped on one the other day, not knowing what it was. To me, it was just a mound of dirt; a pile of bark; but after I stepped on it, a little green head popped out from my footprint. I was overcome with joy to witness this first small sign of spring.

We came from dirt. God planted that little seed in each of us. Now, as humans, we have the choice to stay as a clod in the dirt and hide that seed, or to nur-ture it. Do we reach for the Son and burst from our past so we can blossom and spring forth with joy, or do we lay dormant in our dark little world?

Ash Wednesday is a time for renewal, and then, as we push away the old and reach toward the Son’s ev-erlasting light during the Lenten season, we begin to grow in His steadfast love. It’s SPRING! Time to break free and bloom as God intended. Do not be a clump waiting for others to stomp on you, spring forth and LET GOD’S LIGHT SHINE. Let others be aware of His light shining through you.

During this time of Lent, this is the message we will be bringing the children through various meditations and hands-on stations. Let us pray that it will be a true time of renewal for the children.

Shining His Light, Laurie Coming up: Pastor Class Participants: Do you have your homework ready for Pastor Bob this week? JYF—February 24, 12:30-2:00 pm.

Flurries from Chris Recently I have begun a class during the Youth Group time on Sunday evenings, called “Passage into Discipleship.” This class continues to impress me and leaves me with excitement as I watch our youth con-tinue to grow in their faith. At the same time I have been having a number of conversations with some of you about the role of the youth in the life of our church.

In many ways the class during youth group is designed to help our youth learn about the life of our church and what it means to be a member. Most of the youth have been paired up with an adult in the congregation who will serve as the youth’s mentor until the end of the curriculum in June. My hope is that these mentor partnerships will lead to some amazing conversations and learning moments, not only for the youth but also for the adults.

These mentors are filling a wonderful role that I hope all of you can see yourself in some day. The mentors are getting to know our young people and passing on their knowledge. That is something we can all do. While we are passing on our knowledge to the youth, I would encourage you to have an open heart and ears to receive some new insights and understandings from our youth. They do have a great deal to offer to all of us.

Peace in Christ, Chris Snow

Plaudits and Praise for Stewardship Response Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! How did we do? We'll let the numbers speak for themselves. What a wonderful, giving, dedicated congregation! In our stewardship campaign we asked members to support the work and programs of this church with a steady level of funding on a sustained basis. You responded with commitment and generosity, understanding that stewardship is an important part of personal spiritual growth. As we give, so do we grow. Because of your ongoing, promised support, Salem First Christian Church can plan confidently for the future, reaching forward to achieve ever new goals in service. Thank you.

Those of you who have not yet turned in a pledge card may still do so. Cards are available from the office. And whatever you choose to give, know that your pledge is completely personal and private.

Check It Out! As I listened to Pastor Bob on Sunday, speaking about how easily we make excuses to not live a full Christian life, I was reminded of a book I recently read, “Undaunted,” by Christine Caine. The book starts out telling about a face-to-face meeting with girls rescued from human trafficking in Greece. Throughout the rest of the book, you learn how Christine and her husband founded this rescue mission started in Eastern Europe and which has spread to North America and Australia. You experience the fears Christine had to overcome to become undaunted and to follow God’s call. You will be inspired by Christine’s experiences, stories of Bible people and relevant scripture to overcome your fears and become undaunted in your own life. You will be encouraged to be undaunted and to reach out to those in need in your family, your community or wherever God is calling you. You will find “Undaunted” by Christine Caine on the New Book Shelf soon. Do check it out!!
