Sweetheart Dinner and Dance Saturday, February 14

Bring your sweetheart to the Sweetheart Dinner and support the Mission to Mexico all at the same time. Tickets are being pre-sold for $15 at the Information Center or can be purchased at the door for $20. Childcare is provided. The youth and Mission to Mexico travelers are serving.

All are welcome: singles, couples and groups. Come support those going on Mission to Mexico by enjoying a delightful evening of tasty food and dancing!

We are taking song requests for the dance. You may make your requests at the time of purchasing your ticket.

Book Sale - 15 Days and Counting Donations now being accepted.

Bring your books, games, puzzles, videos, CDs, DVDs, tapes, and plastic bags to the Fellowship Hall. (No encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines or Reader’s Digests– They do not sell.)

Proceeds go to Christian Women’s Fellowship Mission Projects.

Volunteer sorters will work each Monday and Thursday in January from 9:00-11:00 am to prepare for the sale. We also need volunteers to work on the sale dates.

Bites of Bread from Bob In 1871 a man told his wife that he had been swindled by the Wells Fargo company and he vowed to get them back, so he began robbing stage coaches in northern California. Over the period of a decade he robbed over 30 stage coaches. He would hide out and then emerge dressed all in black with only his eyes showing. He carried a long, double barreled shotgun. In a deep baritone voice he would shout out, “Would you please throw down the treasure box, sir?” And they did. Over and over again. He became known as Black Bart. Wells Fargo hired detectives to hunt him down. They tracked him to an extravagant apartment in San Francisco. They were amazed at who he turned out to be. He was a man named Charles Bowles. He was not 7’ tall as the stage coach wit-nesses declared. He wasn’t even 6’. He was a man approaching his 60’s. He never appeared on horse-back at his robberies because he was afraid of horses. He always took a buddy because he was afraid to be alone. He never hit anyone. He never fired a single shot because he never loaded his gun. Instead, he used the most crippling weapon in his arsenal: FEAR. He was good at it. But, unmasked, he was nothing like what people said he was. He was simply a deep voice in a dark suit.

Fear is something that directs way too many of our lives. If we would (with the help of God) look under-neath those fears, we would find as Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to have to fear is fear itself.” One of the most frequent commands in the scripture is to not fear. We have just passed through the Ad-vent Season. “Fear not” are common words in Ad-vent. Those were the words to Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew. Those were the words to both Mary at the announcement of her pregnancy and the words to the shepherds in the fields in the Gospel of Luke.

Those are also the words to us: “Do not be afraid.” As we venture into this new year, certainly many of us will face some dark and scary things but it will not be nearly as paralyzing if we realize that God will always be with us.

A Spiritual Journey from Lent to Pentecost—90 Days of Prayer and Discernment

• Would you like to grow in your spiritual relation-ship to God?

• What if you could “see Jesus with your eyes closed”?

• What if our whole church was praying and listen-ing for God’s leading into the future?

Beginning February 22, the first Sunday of Lent, you are invited to join in a Journey of Prayer for your own faith journey, to share and pray with others in our church family and to pray for the journey of our church, Salem First Christian Church, into the future years.

We will be doing this Journey of Prayer in Triads—3 people to a group—who covenant to meet seven times (every other week), at a time of their choosing, from Lent to Pente-cost (February 22-May 24) to pray for each other and for the church. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”

This will be an opportunity to grow in your own spiritual life and to pray and listen for God’s vision and plans for our church’s mission and ministry. Each triad meeting will have scripture and reflective questions to share and pray together.

On Sunday, January 25, you will have the opportunity to sign up to be part of a Prayer Triad. May God bless you and call you to join in prayer with your church family as we seek God’s wisdom and power in our individual lives and in the life of Salem First Christian Church.

A Warm Welcome to Dennis and Linda Parker On January 18 at the 8:30 am service, Dennis & Linda Parker came forward to place there member-ship with Salem First Christian Church. They both were baptized at a young age and grew up in church families. They were married at the North Dallas Church of Christ. They were members of Monmouth Christian Church while Ward Hill was the minister. They have been attending for about three years and said, "We are very happy here, surrounded by old and new Christian friends."

Congratulation Upon Baptism James Kelley was baptized as a part of our worship service on January 11. Congratulations, James, upon this step in your Christian faith.

Thank You The Hazelwood family, and especially Lee, would like to thank all the members and friends for their loving support following Catherine’s illness and pass-ing. Your cards and notes gave us daily reminders of His love and yours. We love you all and appreciate your caring arms around us.

CWF Treasures Fundraiser Update God answered my prayer for the Treasures Fundraiser to bring in at least $1000. The actual amount was $1062.20!!

When I told the minister from a former church where I was a member and leader of the rummage sale that God had answered prayer to raise $3000, his retort was "Why didn't you ask for more?"

Thanks to all the women who contributed to making this money for missions a success. If you have sug-gestions for the use of the CWF Missions Funds, con-tact any officer or group leader. The decisions are made at the May CWF Planning meeting, this year on May 21.

Cheri Clendennen, my capable co-leader, is much appreciated. I could not have done it without her, nei-ther last year nor this.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie CALLING ALL 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH GRADERS! The JYF theme this Sunday is “Community.” We will share “stone soup” (Stones are optional.) to-gether and make crafts for our community and God’s creatures. Parents, please plan to stay to help and bring something to contribute to our soup.

We are excited to RE-introduce Bill & Dianne Wilk-son in Children’s Ministries. The Wilksons were our Children's Ministries Team leaders a few years ago before Bill's job whisked them away, but now they’re back. Bill & Dianne are long-time members of FCC, and have an extensive background in youth and chil-dren's ministries as sponsors, leaders and teachers. Bill sings in the choir and they serve as Deacons. They bring a love of Jesus and a lot of fun and love with them. Currently they will be teaching the Pas-tor's class with Pastor Bob and me two times a month. If you don't know them already, please take a moment to say hello. They are a very fun couple and we are happy they are HOME! Thank you, Wilksons, for sharing your love of Jesus with our children.

In the 1st-5th grade Sunday School, we are learning about God’s extravagant love and read the parable of the sheep and goats on Sunday. The children shared their own stories of who takes care of them when they are hungry, thirsty and sick. They learned the importance of sharing that same love with others by picturing Jesus' face in each person. We learned that when we help others, we are really helping Jesus. Jesus said "When you do it to the least of these, you do it to me." As you grocery shop this week, please add non-perishable, individually wrapped snacks, like crackers with peanut butter or cheese, chewy granola bars, fruit snacks, applesauce packs, bottled water, individual tuna or chicken packets and have your child bring them to the church with them on Sunday. We are made in God’s image and Jesus taught us to treat others as such. Let’s be that example for our children.

Ramblings from Riane God told his people, “Here is a place of rest: let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen. –Isaiah 28:12

I know many of us can identify with the fact that we live busy lives with full schedules, never ending to-do lists and feel overwhelmed by life’s struggles. Con-stant activity requires our emotional and physical strength on a daily basis. Sometimes, we just need a break. Whether that means a 15-minute power nap, an extra hour of devotional time and prayer, or a whole day to rejuvenate, we need to listen. God prompts us to take some time to rest.—He knows the schedule we have been maintaining and the next jour-ney we will face. It is important that we recognize when He is suggesting that we take some time to rest and care for ourselves. Youth Group Plan of Action! An Important Message for Salem FCC Sunday School TEACHERS In support of our church’s core value of being “A Praying Church,” Sunday School classes are encour-aged to consider “Prayer” as the primary topic of study from February through May 2015. To assist in this effort, the Teaching Ministry Team is preparing Bible study curricula* for optional use in youth and adult classes.

• February 1 – 15: Discovering Jesus’ Perspectives on Prayer

• February 22 – March 22: Personalizing Prayer / Giving Our Time

• April 12 – May 17 – Praying for the Lord’s Lead-ing as a Church

*Lessons for March 29 Palm Sunday, April 5 Easter Sunday and May 24 Pentecost are not included in these materials to allow for other activities.

For anyone who may be interested in teaching on prayer during this period, to review resources a brief meeting is planned for 12:15 – 12:25 pm on Sunday, January 25 in the church library .

Young Married Couples with Children We are invited to participate in the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance on Saturday, February 14. There will be a table reserved for those interested in attending.
