International Albinism Awareness Day 13 June

Wednesdays 13 June is international Albinism Day. Next week at school we will be raising awareness of this condition. What is albinism? Albinism is an inherited condition. It affects the eyes and skin of some individuals, and only the eyes of others. It results from the body's inability to produce normal amounts of a pigment called melanin. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. Albinism results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair, skin and eyes, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired. There is no cure for albinism. Cross Country Winners

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the District Cross Country. Each individual student’s performance combined to produce an outstanding result for the school. The Blaxland team was awarded the Percentage Trophy.

Sports in Schools Program This program has been running throughout this term and has provided the students with skill development in gymnastics including flexibility, coordination, agility, balance and control.

Winmalee Cup On Monday, June 3rd, 26 students made their way to Jamison Park in Penrith to play soccer in the Winmalee Cup. The senior team won a couple of games while the junior team drew a few. It was great to see all of the children out there having a go. Huge thank you to Mr Hancock and Christine Potter who trained the teams for 6 weeks prior to the event.

Mrs Ellwood

Record Reading Results! Mrs Hall, our school librarian, recently collected data about the number of student loans from the library. This data shows that the returns are up by almost 300 for this same period last year! This is phenomenal growth. The data shows that Kindy and Year 1 are making great use of the Quick Read collection. Mrs Hall said that developing this collection over recent years has really paid off. Fiction is very popular with students in Years 3-6. School funds to purchase new books in this area has helped increase student engagement in reading at Blaxland. Keep up the wonderful reading! The Finance Desk All fees were due by the end of Term 1. Could you please finalise outstanding account by the end of Term 3. Fees The new billing system has been very successful. A big thank you to all the families who paid by the end of Term 1. Our community has responded positively to the one payment instead of multiple transactions throughout the year. The school levy combines all the payments required throughout the year including: Maths and English text books, incursions, carnival fees, equipment and resources, celebration days etc. (Camps, swim school and Band fees are in addition to the levy). Families who choose not to pay the levy will be sent separate payment requests for each individual school program, activity or incursion etc. throughout the year. Statements will be sent home each term. Money Collection Please, Please, Please! Money to be placed in envelopes or plastic sandwich bags when students make a payment at the Office. Our wonderful students sometimes bring their payments in with no name and no note - just cash left on the desk. It is quite a challenge to find the owner! Band Fees and Camp Deposits Band fees for Term 2 are now due. A reminder that Band fees are due prior to the start of each term. Winmalee and Narrabeen camp deposits are now due also. Student Banking Student banking is on Thursdays. Please ensure your bank books are left with the front office in the morning.

News from the garden A big THANK YOU to Theresa, Bec and Mrs. Willett who are working hard to harvest our vegie crops and plant more scrumptious vegies for us to grow. The students have also been weeding, mulching, planting and watering rocket, lettuce and cabbages. In Science we have been investigating the parts of plants under a microscope and growing broad bean seeds into seedlings so that we can plant them in the garden. Yummo! Mrs Everett

In the Garden… Our little garden is flourishing! We’ve been very busy bees digging, weeding, planting, mulching, watering and finding all the wonderful, disgusting creatures that live in gardens. 1/2S have been out with their magnifying glasses studying worms, snails and ants. 3/4F have planted lettuce and rocket which will go towards making school lunches. Gateway Family Services Playgroup have explored the garden, tasting the mint and parsley. We also have snow peas, tomatoes, turnips, celery, spinach, beetroot, sweet potato, strawberries, blueberries and herbs growing. The compost system will be up and running soon so scraps from our school’s “Crunch & Sip” can become delicious food for our worm buddies. Thank you to the parents and carers who bought from our recent harvest. I heard that stuffed capsicums, salsa and baked turnips were a hit! We raised $21 which went towards buying seedlings for the garden. A special thank you to the Ozkan family for their kind donation. We will be able to buy mulch, fertiliser and tools needed to keep our garden growing. I invite you to wander around the garden to see what is growing, but please don’t pick anything yet.

However, if you see any snails, slugs or weeds, feel free to take them If you would like to help in the garden, please see Mrs Smith in the office or you can catch me often pottering around before and after school. Happy School Gardening. Theresa aka Maddie’s Mum.

Snow Peas Seedling. Planted 28 May.

P&C News

The P&C had a very successful Mother’s Day Stall this year and we wish to express our gratitude to all those who helped out with the event. The time and effort they put into making the day special for the kids was invaluable. We welcome anyone who wishes to volunteer at future events. The P&C has coordinated with Bunnings at Valley Heights and presented Blaxland Public School with twenty-five new high-vis vests. These vests were recently used by the students training for the Winmalee Cup. The vests can be used for others sports, activities and excursions the school partakes in. Every Friday in June, CafeAu will be at the school oval. From 2:30pm you can grab a barista made coffee or hot chocolate. We will also have snacks for $1. Join us for a chat and bring along any future students for a play. The next P&C meeting will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesday 11th June inside the school staffroom at Blaxland Public School. Everyone welcome to attend.

Some of the children visiting Vivid in Sydney inspired the provision of some brightly coloured art activities. It is always delightful to see the individual pictures created even though the same mediums and stimulus are provided.
