The Florida Challenge Half Marathon Trail Run in beautiful Alafia River State

Park, Lithia FL, is definitely a challenge! This was my second year running the

race. The starting temp was a balmy 53 degrees. Really we couldn't have asked

for better temperatures. By races end it got up to about 67. The course is tough.

You pretty much have to watch where you put your foot down on every step. The

course is almost all knobby root and rock covered single track with numerous sec-

tions of steep accents and descents. There are some sugar sand parts as well. My

heart goes out to the many runners I saw fall. Falling on those roots looks very

painful and there are so many of them, it's really easy to trip out there. I think I

tripped three times, but didn't go down.

The last section of the run is on the double black diamond mountain bike trails. I

think they are called roller coaster and moonscape. The last couple miles is the

real challenge of this run. Save a little something for the last part of the run be-

cause it's... well, it's a challenge. Oddly enough I don't mind scaling up the climbs

so much as I don't like stumbling down the steep descents on tired legs. I'm far

more likely to fall down than fall up. HA!

I'm a big fan of this run and I'll do it again as long as I can. Crossing the finish of

this one is somehow more gratifying than your average half. For anyone who

might want to try a less treacherous trail run I'd recommend the X-Country trail

run held in November in the same location. It's much less technical.

Hello,

My name is Kyra Sweeney. I am the Vice President of the Leaders Club at the

James P. Gills Family YMCA. Leaders Club is a volunteer organization com-

mitted to service and outreach opportunities in the community.

As a member of Leaders Club I have the chance to attend YMCA Blue Ridge

Leaders' School.

Blue Ridge Leaders School located in Black Mountain, North Carolina, brings

together a select group of hard working teen volunteers from YMCAs across

the country. These teens consistently form long-lasting friendships through a

week of character building activities, physical conditioning and leadership

skills development. Blue Ridge Leaders School is a physical education training

school profoundly structured with high standards of behavior, physical partici-

pation, and individual performance. For nearly a century Blue Ridge has been

training generations of leaders. Attending this school is an amazing life-

changing opportunity.

To help raise funds for this trip the Leaders Club is participating in a Run-A-

Thon on Saturday, January 28. Please sponsor

me! I appreciate any amount you are willing

to contribute. Please make checks payable to

the YMCA. All contributions are tax-

deductible.

I hope to raise $500. Your willingness to help

is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much,

Kyra Sweeney

Happy racing!

Congratulations to James Cass for completing his first half. You picked a hell of a

race to do your first half! And Sharon seemed to enjoy the 5K version of the Flor-

ida Challenge. It was great to see James and Sharon out there as well as other

friends. I got a 2:07:23 I took 13 minutes off my time from last year and I'm ec-

static about it! Sore as hell, but very pleased. I came in 114th out of 305 overall,

and 89th out of 185 for men only." Jay Gallagher

I did my first Half Marathon this Sunday -- The Florida Challenge @ Alafia River State Park. This run was on the mountain bike trails, and it was pretty tough. I felt good though until about mile 8 or 9, but before this race that's the longest I had ever run before-- 8 or 9 miles. Anyway, I finished with a 2:14, which I'm told is nothing at all equivalent to a 2:14 road half marathon. I was fine until this morning. All day I'm walking around like I need assis-tance. I guess I should have trained more than 3 or 4 miles at a time-- once per week, lol.
