Clearer nformat on s needed to recru tapprent ces and to ill places, says CIPDLEARNING providers and employers mustprovide clear information and adopt trans-parent recruitment practices to boost applica-tion numbers for less popular apprenticeshipprogrammes, according to a new report bythe CIPD, commissioned by the National Ap-prenticeship Service.

While some apprenticeship programmes,such as those in aviation operations, costume

design, plumbing and music business, at-tracted 40 or more applications per vacancylast year, others were less popular with can-didates, according to analysis of the onlineapplications received via the NAS website.

A report titled The match factor goodpractice in apprenticeship recruitment ex-plores the reasons why some apprenticeship

vacancies go unfilled. In order to overcomethese mismatches, the report outlines anumber of recommendations for learningproviders, employers and apprenticeshipcandidates, including:l Learning providers and employers shouldadopt youth-friendly recruitment practices.This involves ensuring that adverts for va-cancies are clear and free of jargon, provid-

ing feedback to unsuccessful candidates, andalso considering those candidates for similaror future positions.l Employers and learning providers could domore to raise the profile of apprenticeshipsand gain parents buy-in and engagement.Young people and their parents need clearerinformation on the pay and career prospects

of apprenticeships to chal-lenge common misconcep-tions about the sorts of professions they cover and

encourage candidates to apply for jobs thatfit them best. While many apprenticeshipsstart with a relatively modest wage com-pared to other entry-level roles, candidatesneed a longer-term perspective to see how anapprenticeship can help them progress andearn higher salaries further down the line.l Learning providers should also seek tobuild and highlight the long-term business

benefits of apprenticeships when workingwith employers and not mis-sell them as asource of cheap labour.l Apprenticeship candidates should tailortheir apprenticeship application to the spe-cific industry, employer and job descriptionand avoid using a scatter-gun approach toapply for hundreds of vacancies. They shouldalso be encouraged to proactively seek out ca-reers information advice and guidance and toensure they ask questions before and duringan apprenticeship to avoid disappointments.

Katerina Rdiger, head of skills and polcampaigns at the CIPD, said: When doneproperly, apprenticeships are an excellentway to reach out to a wide talent pool andallow employers to grow their own, ensurthey have the future skills their organisatineeds to succeed.

Via the CIPDs Learning to Work pro-gramme, we know that many employers r

ognise the need to bring more young peopinto their organisation and are increasinglusing apprenticeships as a way to do this.

However, some employers may be woning why their apprenticeship programmesare not attracting enough, or the right, appcants. Working closely with apprenticeshilearning providers during the recruitmentprocess is vital.

Some recruitment practices such aslengthy and unclear job descriptions andworkplace jargon can create a barrier..
