Concerns raised over the problematicrise in self-employed jobs since 2010SELF-EMPLOYMENT accounts for 44 percent of the net rise in employment since mid-2010, with pensioners, part-time workers and‘odd-jobbers’ the fastest growing groups ofBritain’s new self-employed workforce, ac-cording to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).The TUC analysis shows that despite self-
employment being a relatively small part ofthe UK jobs market – just one in seven work-ers are self-employed – it has accounted for 44per cent of all employment growth since thelast election.The TUC’s analysis also shows that the
number of people starting their own busi-nesses has fallen in recent years, in spite ofrising self-employment. The biggest growth
areas of self-employment since mid-2010have been people working for themselves (up232,000), freelancing (up 69,000) or sub-con-tracting (up 67,000).The number of self-employed people who
either run a business, or are a partner or soledirector in one (positions usually associatedwith entrepreneurship) has fallen by 52,000.These figures show rising self-employmentis part of a wider shift towards insecureemployment, rather than as a result of agrowing number of people starting up newcompanies as ministers like to claim, says theTUC.Self-employment has been going up steadily
since early 2008, even when unemployment
was rising sharply, and has increased evenmore in recent years.The TUC is concerned that the growth of
self-employment is at the expense of moresecure employee jobs. Many newly self-em-ployed workers do the same work as employ-ees but with less job security, poorer workingconditions and often less take-home pay, saysthe TUC.Other forms of self-employment – for
example selling goods online or registeringas self-employed to do the occasional ‘oddjob’ – tend not to pay enough to make a decentliving, says the TUC.Self-employed workershave no right to paid sick, holiday, maternityor paternity leave, redundancy pay or protec-
tion against unfair dismissal – a particularproblem for self-employed workers who aresub-contracted to another employer. Thegovernment is also planning to exempt mostself-employed workers from vital health andsafety protections in the Deregulation Billcurrently making its way through Parlia-ment.TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady
said: “These newly self-employed workersare not the budding entrepreneurs ministerslike to talk about. Only a tiny fraction runtheir own businesses, while the vast majoritywork for themselves or another employer –often with fewer rights, less pay and no jobsecurity.”
