More training for students could beneittheir job search when they graduateIN A world where more graduates are beingcreated than there are graduate jobs avail-able, a leading international sales trainingprovider believes that universities are failinggraduate job seekers.Doug Tucker, managing director of SalesCommando, has observed first hand, throughthe major employers he works with “a gulfbetween the employment expectations ofgraduates and the expectations of potentialemployers.”As Mr Tucker points out: “Of course,employers are looking for those with the bestexam results and take into account all theother key facets of uni life, but employersare also looking for candidates who are teamplayers, problem solvers and who can organ-ise and prioritise their work.“All too often they tell me they find candi-dates lacking the crucial, top-level business,communication and interpersonal skills.”The problem is worldwide too, exacerbatedby the post recession decline in the number
of graduate posts available. For example, inthe UK, the Office for National Statistics saysalmost half the number of emerging gradu-ates are stuck in non-graduate jobs.In China, only 70 per cent of graduates gainemployment – and these figures are reflectedthroughout the US, continental Europe andthe UAE.Mr Tucker believes universities need tobetter equip students to find suitable employ-ment once they have graduated which can beachieved quite easily by adding real-worldtraining as part of the university coursestructure.Mr Tucker is keen to point out there is aneasy and workable solution. “The best gradu-ate jobs are scarce and I believe that, morethan ever, universities have a duty of care toensure their students are properly equippedto meet the demands of employers in the realworld,” he said.“This can be achieved by including salestraining in the course curriculum – because
all businesses of any size and in any industryare in the business of selling.“It needn’t be extensive training either. Isuggest, as part of the final few monthsbetween dissertation and exams, all students– especially on business related courses –undertake at least a day of cutting edge salestraining,” he added.Sales training, says Mr Tucker, will alsohone other essential values that employ-ers will demand: “At its core, sales trainingengenders rock solid communication andinterpersonal skills,” he said.“As has been proven through many surveys,these are the abilities employers are lookingfor in the graduate, yet so rarely find.”He added: “Universities provide theirstudents with plenty of important and highlyvalued advantages in an increasingly de-manding, competitive and globalised gradu-ate job market.“But I believe, and it is my experience withmajor employers worldwide who are looking
to recruit the best graduates, that real-worldsales training could quite easily make thatdifference between employment and rejec-tion.”
