Bosses are urged to run Apprentice-stylechallenges to inspire the next generationMINISTER for employment Esther McVeyhas called on businesses to offer youngpeople more experience of the world of workthrough Apprentice-style challenges.Ms McVey said tasks given to aspiring busi-
ness leaders on the TV show The Apprenticewere a good way to encourage young peopleto experience the workplace, and could easilybe adopted by employers across the UK.Employers have a key part to play in getting
young people into work, she said, but youngpeople would struggle to find work unlessbusinesses were willing to open their doors.“It’s the age old problem – the young people
I meet tell me they need work experience toget a job, but they need a job to get work expe-rience,” she told the MailOnline.“People who have been successful in busi-
ness have a huge amount to offer young
people who are just starting out. They knowabout the drive and determination it takes towork your way up through the ranks, or to setup in business and go it alone.“This kind of first-hand experience can
be invaluable in inspiring our young peopleto work hard and build a career. I’d like toappeal to bosses around the country to do eve-rything they can to inspire the next genera-tion,” she said.Figures from the Department for Work
and Pensions (DWP) suggest that more than250,000 young people have taken part inemployer-led placements or work experiencesince 2011, but latest research from venturecapital investor Albion Ventures shows thatmany SMEs are struggling to offer suchopportunities. Just 12 per cent of SMEssurveyed have an apprentice scheme in place,
and 23 per cent are considering launchingone in future. The survey of 450 small andmedium sized businesses, suggests that taxincentives offered by the government appearto be boosting take-up for schemes. HoweverSME bosses have asked for initiatives to gofurther, with 14 per cent of survey respond-ents saying they would be more likely toconsider taking on an apprentice as a resultof the government’s relief on national insur-ance contributions for employees under 21.Commenting on the Albion Ventures study,
Emran Mian, director of Social Market Foun-dation, said: “While it is a welcome boost thatapprenticeships are becoming increasinglypopular, it is imperative that we actively lookto help those businesses, whose growth isbeing held back by a dearth of key skills, takethe next step.”
