Hello everybody, Thank you for reading our Summer School Brochure! The Faculty of Economics & Business offers many opportunities to go and study abroad. You came to the right place to ‘Discover the world’. Many partner universities organize Summer Schools. In this brochure, you can find more information on how to choose a programme and destination, when a Summer School is eligible for a credit transfer to your ISP, how to apply for a Summer School, how to apply for a credit transfer to your curriculum after completion and much more. Besides this information, a selection of possible Summer Schools and some testimonials of students of our faculty are included as well. The list of Summer Schools is a random pick from all the possibilities, if you want a more complete list, make sure to visit the FEB Summer School website! Attending a ‘Summer School’ is so much more than gaining knowledge in a specific area. You’ll gain knowledge about cultures, language and maybe about yourself. You’ll return home with memories that will last a lifetime. Hopefully, we’ve sparked your interest in going abroad!

PRACTICAL

WHAT IS A SUMMER SCHOOL?

You take up a summer programme by universi-ties (abroad) during summer.

You acquire additional knowledge and skills, which will complete your education.

You can choose from a very wide range of sub-jects: politics, business & management, law, eco-nomics, languages… the possibilities are en-dless! Discover them in this brochure!

WHEN CAN I ATTEND?

The date of the Summer School depends on the university of your choice. Also, the moment when a university makes the Summer School program information available differs.

Keep an eye on the websites of potentially in-teresting Summer Schools during the academic year for up-to-date information!

WHY?For so many

different reasons!

You work together with different nationalities in various groups. It’s an international experience, it shows that you are taking initiative and want to learn. In short, an excellent achievement to improve your CV.

It is the perfect way to explore a particular topic.

You meet new people, discover cultures and learn different teaching methods. In addition to classes, many Summer Schools also offer leisure and social activities. An ideal mix!

Under certain conditions successful completion of a Summer School may lead to a credit trans-fer to your ISP, replacing the elective ‘capita sle-cecta’ in the academic year following your stu-dy-abroad.

HOW DO I GO ON SUMMER SCHOOL?

STEP 1Apply for the Summer School at the university of your choiceChoose a Summer School and destination first: this brochure may help you find a Summer School that mat-ches your interest. Then apply for this Summer School. Follow the procedure and deadlines set by the organizing university. You are responsible for the practical aspects of your Summer School. Sometimes a formal English langua-ge certificate like a TOEFL test will be requested (more information: http://www.ets.org/toefl).

1. Follow the instructions on: http://www.kuleuven.be/english/admissions/outgoing/en/applicationprocedure

2. In the application form, choose the statute “study” and substatute “Free Mover”.

Summer School in ISP 2019Under certain conditions successful completion of a Sum-mer School may lead to credit transfer to your ISP in the academic year following your study- broad.

SUMMER SCHOOL IN ISP?

Can I still include an elective in my ISP 2020-2021?Do I have an official transcript of records from my Summer School?

Check in advance:1.2.

If you answered “YES” to both questions, you can send the “Summerschool request credit transfer” together with your proof of credit to [email protected]. If you have already checked the eligibility of your Summer School before departure (you have already submitted the application form), you need to re-ap-ply and add your proof of credit.

Send this application form to the FEBadvisor by the 1st of October of the academic year following the Summer School. You can find the application form here: https://feb.kuleuven.be/eng/international/going-abroad/summer-schools.

To apply for a credit, you must comply with the following conditions:

SUMMER SCHOOLS RELATED TO LAW AND POLITICS

I always wanted to have an international school experience but 3 months is a very long time, so a Summer School was the perfect solution for me. Du-ring my 3 weeks in Toronto we had interesting lectures, guest speakers, net-working events, corporate visits (we visited Twitter and BMO for example) and there was a Business Plan Competition (our group finished fourth). ABC Business Academy totally changed me: I’m now able to give a pitch in front of 100 people, which is very imported for me because I have always been afraid to speak in public. The motto of this program: work hard, play hard. This was true: we had a lot of work for school, but we also partied a lot. In Toronto you can go out every evening and there is always a special promo-tion somewhere. I lived in Ryerson University which was in the middle of Toronto, it was an 8-minute walk to school and a 5-minute walk to the city. We had enough time to discover Toronto and I really fell in love with this city. A trip to the Niagara Falls is almost obligatory as it is very impressive and beautiful. An additional reason why I went to Toronto: you can use this Summer School in your Master Business Administration for 6 ECTS points. For the travelers amongst us: New York is not far away (1h30 by plane), this is also where I finished my 3-week adventure in Toronto!

IIT Bombay, India

First of all, visiting India has always been on my bucket list. It was in December, when I was studying for my exams, that I got a message from the International Office of our faculty: Summer School IIT Bombay. I saw it and I was sold. For me it was like the exchange I never had. I always dreamt about going to India so this was the ultimate combination to go on an ‘exchange’ and experience the Indian culture. I was the only one of KU Leuven who went to Bombay, but this didn’t scare me at all! Together with 10 master students of UCL (University College London) we attended classes: every day was about another subject : finance of India, human resources, spirituality, ... and for the other part of the day, we went on industry visits. We got some information about the company and had a guided tour. I was surprised by the fact that women have a leading position in these companies and by that have a strong voice in the business world. In the weekend we had some free time. We visited the national park of Bom-bay, which was beautiful. We went into the caves and saw some monkeys, which was also lovely! However the monsoon season had al-ready started when I arrived in Bombay, but luckily that day was dry (in fact, this was the only day it didn’t rain). In the evening we had dinner in Lord of the Drinks, which is a restaurant where you can have delicious food and afterwards it transforms into a club and I can tell you: Indian people know their dance moves! Dinner in India is very different from Belgian traditions, generally they order some food like main course and starters and they share all of it! I really liked it because in that way, you can taste different sorts of food and experience some new flavours.

During the summer school we stayed in a hostel, which was on campus. I had my own room, but shared a bathroom with other girls of the summer school. In our hostel, there was a wing for girls and a wing for boys, they were not allowed to come to the girls wing. The hostel was only 10 minutes walking to Shaleish J. Me-hta School of Management, where we attended classes. When it was raining, we usually took an autoriksha, better known as a tuktuk. On campus, there was not that much traffic, but when we went outside for din-ner in the evening, there was a lot of traffic. I really enjoyed the chaos, all the honking and the driving in the middle of the street. Over there, it doesn’t matter if you ride with 4 or 5 tuktuks next to each other; if it fits, it fits! My overall experience was wonderful! I enjoyed every single moment, met some new people who became real friends, had a lot of fun, ate the most delicious curries and visited some beautiful places! I would rec-ommend a summer school to all of you, it’s a learning experience you’ll never get from classes in Leuven. Coming back home was not like a goodbye, but a see you later!

Spending a summer school at the Nova SBE in Portugal was a real oppor-tunity since I was looking for an exciting short international experience. At Nova SBE there is a real entrepreneurial mindset with an open look to the world. By visiting multiple companies and start-up hubs, it was inspiring to gain insights on how entrepreneurs and leaders were able to empower the Portuguese economy. The Lisbon experience was next to its academic side very well combined with cultural and extracurricular activities like surfing, traditional dinners etc… The business school has a very new and futuristic campus next to the beach which is an incredible work environment and a nice place to meet people from all over the world. Finally, people were very welcoming and the food was awesome! I can warmly suggest everyone to attend this summer program.
