THE SUMMER SCHOOL Programme The Oboe Summer School opens with a concert given by the Artists at St Andrew’s on The Terrace in central Wellington at 2.30pm on 3 January, 2017. Registration will be before the concert with the opportunity to meet fellow participants. Following the concert, the Summer School will immediately begin with the first masterclass held at the Church, and the following day we will continue the course at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington which will host the remaining activities of the week. The oboe summer school offers masterclass and private lesson opportunities for Advanced class members and some High School aged participants as well as chamber music for all participants. This week of activities will be preceded by a day of “professional development” at the Church on 2 January, under the guidance of Jacques Tys, which will be closed to the public. See below for more details. The daily programme will include: Nine master classes given by the artists Master classes will be given by Jacques Tys, Gordon Hunt, Diana Doherty, Eve Newsome, Robert Orr, and Alexandre Oguey. These classes will cover solo repertoire as well as orchestral excerpts. Reed time Daily reed making and adjusting, with guidance from reed-maker, Kexun Ge. Chamber music Play in oboe trios, quartets (or larger) each day, with coaching from the artists and associate artists. Workshops and Talks Concerts in Wellington Given by artists and participants. Exhibits Try a range of oboes and accessories from our sponsors, with expert advice on hand. ACCOMMODATION There is a huge array of accommodation available in Wellington, from hotels, to backpackers. The main venue for the week is located within Victoria University which is located up quite a steep hill from the city Te Puni Village (http://www.tepunivillage.co.nz/) is the closest hotel accommodation and it is actually located on site (in term times it is used as University student accommodation) and quite a modest price which is a reasonably modern premises and a tidy place to stay. Or try holiday home rental websites, such as www.bookabach.co.nz, www.holidayhouses.co.nz and www.holidayhomes.co.nz Wellington Airport is an International airport and can be arrived to directly from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Also, there are regular daily domestic flights from Auckland and other New Zealand cities. The centre of Wellington is located just 7km from the airport and it can be reached by airport bus or taxi in 15 minutes. The University is less than 1km from the centre of Wellington. Things to do in and around Wellington Wellington is the Capital City of New Zealand and as well as the house of Parliament, affectionately known as the Beehive, it boasts “Te Papa”, the National Museum of New Zealand which is well worth a visit. Also, it is worth the effort to take in the view from Mt Victoria or catch the cable car up to the Botanic Gardens. Alternatively, check out the cafes and restaurants in Cuba Street or take a walk around the city and the waterfront, including Oriental Bay. PARTICIPANT’S FEES

(NEW) Professional Development Class (Full time or Freelance oboists) 2/3 January, 6 places available. Two options for these participants: Intensive 2 day course, NZ$500.00 / NZ$750.00 for the full week (become an observer and share a pedagogical meeting with the Artists with lunch included each day). Please contact us for more details.

Advanced tertiary and advanced high school aged participants who are about to commence, or are currently studying for a performance degree. NZ$720.00* / NZ$795.00

Oboe Enthusiasts (recommended Grade 6 level and above) Adults: NZ$600.00* / NZ$540.00 15% discount for under 21.

Younger High School Aged Masterclass Participants**

(5 places available, ages 14-18) perform in one special masterclass for this group, as well as all other activities, NZ$600.00* / NZ$540.00

Observer’s fees $300 for the week (includes lunch and BBQ) or $40 per day (no meals)***

*** A parent accompanying a High School aged participant will pay no observer fees.

** A limited number of accommodation and board options are available for high school aged participants from the age of 14 up to 18. Contact us for more information.

Participant’s fees include attending all master classes, playing in two master classes (Advanced Class only), attending and participating in concerts, reed classes, workshops and talks, morning and afternoon tea and lunch, (except on Day 1, 3 January). All participants have the option of private lessons with the artists.

Participant’s places are limited, so early booking is recommended.

NON PARTICIPANT’S FEES

Per master class or concert NZ$25 Adult / NZ$15 Concession (unless you are an adult accompanying a participating minor, then listening /observing concerts and classes is free. Under 18 free with paying adult)

The cost of the Summer School excludes: accommodation, transport, breakfast, dinner and

private lessons with the artists.

The Wellington International Oboe Summer School will be held from 3 – 8 January 2017. It will feature seven outstanding oboists: Jacques Tys, from Paris Opera Orchestra and oboe Professor at the Paris Conservatoire; Gordon Hunt has for many years been the pre-eminent oboist in the United Kingdom and Diana Doherty (Australia) are the featured artists. Additionally, Robert Orr who has been Principal Oboe with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for a number of years, Thomas Hutchinson, recently appointed Associate Principal Oboe of the Melbourne Symphony, Alexandre Oguey (Cor Anglais Sydney Symphony) and Eve Newsome (Professor of Woodwind at the Queensland Conservatorium) will also be attending as our associate artists. The Summer School will be based at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington. Wellington has much to offer visitors from abroad and within New Zealand. The city boasts the National Museum, Te Papa and is wonderfully compact, with most sights being in walking distance around the picturesque harbour.
