Message From Herb Hurley
General Manager
By now I am sure that 95% of the membership has heard about the proposed changes to the automatic gratuity in the restaurants. When this
proposed change was announced to the Advisory Boards of both clubs it was
met with some resistance. After the meeting I received over 40 emails from the membership, which were forwarded to Japan for review.
Due to the concern of the membership, for the both the staff and your club as a whole, the ownership has decided to postpone the implementation of the service fee until he can further evaluate the situation.
I would like to take this time to clarify a few things that I have been questioned about, in regard to this change. Currently, the clubs pay the wait staff a “tipped employee minimum wage” that includes an automatic gratuity on the bill totaling the employee's hourly rate. Management is proposing to increase the hourly rate of the wait staff to a very favorable, consistent rate and
change the gratuity to a service fee. This change will not change your bottom line spending. The only way your bill would go up is if you choose to leave an extra cash tip for the waiter/waitress. The clubs will then use that service fee to pay the staff and to offset the restaurant losses. This will also help to ensure our staff a more consistent pay even when the restaurants are slow during our off-season months. The restaurants of both clubs have continually lost money year after year. Management feels that each department should be able to make a profit or worse case scenario break even.
If you have any questions or would just like to sit down and discuss this matter or any other matter please do not hesitate to call me or send me an email to set up an appointment. I can be reached at [email protected] or by calling either 382-5996 or 382-3838 ext.14.
Just a reminder that Sugarmill Woods will be closed stagain on Monday's starting May 1 .

Currently, SMW & SW 15 new Full Golfing (Family) and/or Full Golfing (Single) memberships. Although sales have dropped through the last half of February and beginning of March, remember, this is typical for high season. I expect sales to pick back up through April and the
st1 half of May as snowbirds start to head north and are looking to solidify where they will be living and playing golf next year. I also expect sales to jump again in October, November and December as people return and newcomers move into the area.
Other topics I have been working on is the membership survey. I had many people respond to last months survey and I appreciate your participation. The topics that received the most votes from the members were: Tampa Bay Rays Base Ball Game, Wine Tasting, 2 to 3 Day Cruises and Patio Parties. Thank you to all of you that participated in my survey.
I am currently working on a group trip to watch the Tampa Bay Rays in late April. Once everything is put in place and all details have been set, I will send out an email with exact days, times and cost. So remember to watch for an email from the Membership office with the subject line: Take me out to the Ball Game!

Director of Golf Maintenance
The month of April is typically the start of the growing season. This is the time of year when temperatures are consistently in the 60's at night and 80's during the day. The Bermuda grass starts to actively grow when these types of weather
condition is in place. During this month we will continue to verticut and topdress
greens, just as we did in March, which will help remove over seed and promote Bermuda grass growth.
One of the major items that we are going to address this year is nematode control. Curfew, which has been scheduled for
rdJune 3 , will reduce nematode populations on greens, fairways and tees. In the past we have put the focus towards a few key fairway and tee areas, however, for the past two years, certain greens have struggled with consistent leaf growth and overall health. This is the reason why, this year, all greens will be treated with Curfew, so that we can reestablish a good healthy growing environment. This Curfew application will also address mole crickets as well.
Other items included for this month include edging bunkers and removing any dead trees or limbs that may affect play throughout the golf course. Please remember to repair ball marks, fill divots, rake bunkers and keep carts in their appropriate places throughout the courses. If anyone has any questions please call the maintenance office at 382-4010.

“Person(s) of Interest” goes behind the scenes to give a glimpse of the lives of SMWCC members.

The Bartons can claim the distinction of being one of SugarMill Woods' most senior couples. Bill recently celebrated his 98th birthday with scores of good wishes from friends and family. They've been members of the club since 1980, after moving to Homosassa from West Hempstead (Long Island), New York. He started golfing in 1930 and she started in 1940. During their early years at SMW, Bill was active in several Men's Golf Association groups. The Bartons have two children and five grandchildren.
Before they retired, Bill was sales manager for The Prudential Insurance Company in New York City. During the early part of World War II, Bill was stationed in Tampa on port security with the U.S. Coast Guard. Shortly after they moved to the area, Connie applied for a job at Tampa General Hospital, hoping to supplement the family income. She was immediately hired as secretary to the superintendent of the hospital; and when it became necessary to leave a year later, she was given a glowing letter of recommendation by her boss.
Bill also spent about 18 months as a radio man aboard a Coast Guard cutter in the North Pacific during the war. He still remembers the challenges and stress of engaging the Japanese in combat several times off the waters of Alaska.
Having observed an impressive number of birthdays, the Bartons have a wealth of memories and interesting experiences. Bill was among the four million people who lined the parade route celebrating Charles Lindbergh's solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927. He said he and his buddy were almost hit by a roll of ticker tape that failed to unroll properly when it was thrown from a 28th story window.
One of Connie's favorite stories involves a conversation with her best friend sometime in the late 1930s. The teenager girls were walking home from the bus stop one night, and Connie confided to her friend, “I would love to go out with Bill Barton.” Her friend responded, “Oh, Connie, you've got about as much chance of going out with Bill Barton as Man has of walking on the moon!” By the time Neal Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969, Bill and Connie had been married nearly 30 years!

No one should be complaining about the weather here in Sugarmill Woods this past winter. I do not have any statistics but I would think it had to be one of the
warmest on record as well as in other parts of the country.
While the weather has been great the rain has not. I hope everyone is aware of the new water restrictions and
thwatering days that went into effect from March 10 through thJune 30 . If we don't get some substantial rain I would
assume the restrictions would be extended.

The saying goes April showers bring May Flowers. April is here and everyone is rushing around trying to get their taxes inline, and talking about who is going to win the Masters this year, and
where they are going this summer to beat the heat.
Also, this is the time of year where Tim and the maintenance staff start preparing the course for transition to the summer Bermuda grasses. We are currently scheduling all the aerifying dates, and curfew dates to battle those pesky nematodes and mole crickets, along with all other maintenance practices that he needs to do to help maintain the courses in the great shape we all have come to enjoy.
So, make sure you call the pro shop before heading over to the course to play a quick 9 or 18 to ensure your enjoyment at the club.
Finally we have scheduled the LADIES NIGHT OUT for thApril 6 , 2012 at World Woods on the Rolling Oaks. The
entry fee will be the same as you would pay at either Sugarmill or at Southern Woods. The event will begin at 3 pm sharp and dinner will be at Sugarmill Woods at the completion play. Let us see if we can get 40 ladies to participate. Remember that this is a ladies night out, and we will be seating as teams for dinner, if husbands want to come there will be a table set aside for all the guys. If this is the case please let us know so we have the appropriate amount of seating.
The Men's and Ladies Club Championship are schedule for th thApril 13 and 14 , 2012. The sign up sheet and all the
tournament information is hanging up in the pro shop by the handicap computer.
Sign up for this great event and find out if you are the Best player in the Club.
The last few months we have had a lot of great shot by members:
Jeanne Goldich did something that has eluded her a very long time. On December 28, 2011 she made her first career HOLE-N-ONE on Oak # 6 using her 5 Havenwood.
Marty Sullivan made her first HOLE-N-ONE on Feb th28 , 2012 on Pine #4 using her Driver.
thBill Zembruski made a HOLE-N-ONE on March 6 , 2012 on #3 Oak using his 7 Iron.
Frank Siemietkowski made a natural EAGLE (2) on # 7 Oak using a 9 iron from a 150 yards.

By the time you get this newsletter, Hitting for Hospice and Member/Guest tournaments will be over. Look for results in our next newsletter.
We asked you for ideas on how to keep this game moving, some of the suggestions were:
• Do not put your club away if your going to use it at your next shot.
• Do not take the time to compare the distance reading from more than one range finder, unless you are having trouble with yours.
• KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU.
• You do not have to swing fast or hurry.
• Prepare to hit your next shot while your opponent is hitting hers.
• If you see a hole open in front of you, CATCH UP!
• When approaching the green, if one player's ball is short to the green, drop that player off with a few clubs and the other player proceeds to the green.
• When walking onto the green after a pitch or chip shot, put your excess clubs down just off the CART-SIDE on the fringe. (NEVER LAY YOUR CLUBS ON THE GREEN!)
• While waiting for the other players to come onto the green, fix ball marks and start studying your putt.
• If you hole out first, get ready to leave the green by picking up all your clubs, get the flag, and be ready when the other players complete the hole.
• Do not pick up team players clubs lying on the fringe, each player should pick up their own clubs to help speed up play.
• Keep an occasional eye on the group in front of you, if you arrive at the tee and they are exiting the green, pick up the pace.
• Be mindful of your golf etiquette, especially on the green.
Hope this gives you some incite to “Keep this game moving.” Don't forget you can play on Thursdays and Saturdays for fun and money!

Golf Tips by Chantel Smith
By Chantel SmithAssistant Golf Professional
Actually this months Golf Tips are by www.golftips365.com. I recently came across this fantastic website that gave good solid golf tips for every part of the golf game. I usually don't like sites like
this, but the author has done a wonderful job in choosing and explaining every single
tip. Check out www.golftips365.com. I have chosen my three favorites to share with you!
Putting: Practice Short Putts
Statistically about 40% of all your shots will be putts - irrespective of your handicap. And just over 50% of those putts will be 5 foot or less. So if you play off a 18 handicap you will probably have about 16 - 18 short putts in a round
There is a clear need therefore for every golfer to practice short and very short putts from all angles - uphill, downhill, borrow left and borrow right. However what do we all do when we get to the practice green? - Yep, we drop half a dozen balls and pick out a free hole 30 feet away.
Try the following drill to sharpen your short putts. Put a bunch of balls down in a ring round a hole, all about 3 feet from it. Go round and putt them all into the hole. Continue until you have made 10 putts in a row. Then move the balls out to 4 feet from the hole and start again. And so on.
It's not the most exciting golf practice but it will make a big difference to your score. And put an end to the agony of missing yet another 3 footer.
Chipping: Control Distance With Club Selection
Although many amateurs always use the same club for chipping around the green you will notice that the pros all use a number of different clubs for chipping, depending on the length of the chip they face. They do this because they want the ball to travel as far as possible rolling along the green rather than flying through the air. Therefore although they may take a pitching wedge for a very short chip they may use a 7-iron or stronger for much longer chips, with all the clubs in between for the intermediate distances. And you should too of you want to truly master chipping.
The key to mastering this technique is (initially at least) to develop a 'standard chip', which always has the same length of back swing. On the practice green chip 3 balls with each of pitching wedge, 9, 8, and 7-iron. Focus on doing the 'standard chip' and don't look how far the balls have gone until you have used all the clubs. You will see that you have 4 groups of balls at 4 different distances. Pace out how far each club goes and then practice chipping to holes at those distances with the relevant club.
It takes some practice but you will find that you start to look at each chip you face as a standard 8-iron chip or a standard PW chip or whatever, adding or subtracting a club as required for uphill and downhill chips. Once you are comfortable with the standard chip for these different clubs you can learn to finesse it by varying the length of the swing slightly as well.
Distance: Don't Over-swing At The Top
In their attempt to hit the ball harder and further many
amateurs try to take a bigger swing. This usually results in them over-swinging at the top. Their left arm bends and the club wraps around their neck past the horizontal. This is the most common cause of a poor start to the downswing.
The truth of the matter is that for most people power and distance do not increase with a bigger swing. Power comes from unwinding your body and not from extra movement in your arms. You are actually more likely to lose distance and you will almost certainly accuracy.
Take a look in the mirror next time you are at the range. If you are over-swinging you should make a determined effort to limit your back swing to a point before your left arm starts to bend. And if you are struggling with a slice or a hook then over-swinging is the first thing to eliminate.
It may feel like you are only taking half a swing but in practice it will actually be more like 90% of a swing and it will still deliver 100% of the power. Happy Golfing!
Beautiful Weather, Plentiful Golfers Equals Abundant Ball Marks
BE KIND TO YOUR GREENSPlease remember to always fill your divots in the fairway with the sand provided and always fix your ball mark and at least one other on every green. It is important to remember that your ball mark might not always be right next to your ball. It could be on the front of the green and your ball is on the back of the green. Every ball that lands on the green makes some sort of indentation.

Drop Shots
From The Tennis AssociationBy Jack Stevenson, Membership Chairman
A Special Thanks
We often don't recognize the contributions of members like Len Chesterfield, (below), who shows up every Monday and Wednesday to coordinate men's ladder play. Len, a long-time member of our Association, is a past president of our Association and a recipient of the Golden Racquet Service Award given for outstanding contributions to our tennis community. Len sets up the foursomes for each day, assigns courts, records sitouts and keeps us on the ball. Thanks, Len, for all you do for us!
Racquet Strings
Keep in mind that the racquet and its strings are central to a good game. When it's time for re-stringing, many tennis players get their tennis racquet restrung using the recommendations of the stringers. For the most part that is probably OK, but there are vast differences in racquet strings and you may want to do your own research on what's best for you. Multi-filaments, polyesters, and co-poly blends can really make a difference in that all important feel of the game. There are strings with features that enhance power, control, comfort, etc. and by doing some on-line research you can make a more intelligent choice that suits your particular needs. Each manufacturer has its own website which you can view by doing a search on keywords “tennis racquet strings”. Also, an excellent guide on string characteristics is given on www.tennis-warehouse.com/LC/stringreference.html .
Don't forget to sign up for our second Playday of the year, which includes a picnic afterwards, to be held on Saturday,
thApril 14 . Sign up at the Oak Village Tennis Center or by contacting Tournament Chairman Dave Abbey at 382-0059.
Thanks to Association President Paul Danner for his input and photo for this Drop Shots article.
Remember to get your racquet back, keep your eye on the ball, swing through the ball and follow through! See you
on the courts!

Dr. Eric A. Sampson DC
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative Disc Disease is a gradual process that occurs as we age. Gradually the water and protein content of the
body's cartilage changes. Sometimes this process is accelerated due to heavy
occupational demands such as repetitive bending and twisting, heavy lifting, or accident and injury while playing sports such as golf. These changes can result in weaker and thinner cartilage. Because both the discs and the joints (facet joints) are composed of cartilage, these areas are subject to wear and tear over time (degenerative changes). This gradual deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae (back bones) is referred to as degenerative disc disease. These changes usually occur long before you can see them on x-rays or other imaging techniques.
What is happening is the progression of wear and tear of the discs and the weakening of protein (collagen) of the outer band of the disc (annulus fibrosis) causing a structural and biomechanical change of the disc. Furthermore, water and proteoglycan (PG) content decreases. PGs are molecules that behave like super sponges and can bind and attract water hundreds of times their own molecular weight. “Disc desiccation” is a term used to describe the proteoglycan content decreasing and loss of water in the discs (dehydration). This very well may be a term you read on your MRI report you may have had in the past.
This process severely affects the "shock absorbing" properties of the discs as they "compress" under normal pressure. These changes usually occur at the same time as the annulus fibrosis degenerates and generally leads to the disc's inability to handle mechanical stress. Because the lumbar spine carries a large portion of the body's weight, degeneration of the disc tissue makes the disc more susceptible to herniate and can cause local pain in the affected area. Disc degeneration can sometimes lead to disorders such as spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), spondylolisthesis (forward slippage of the disc and vertebra), and retrolisthesis (backward slippage of the disc and vertebra).
Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease Pain And Symptoms
Although symptoms are variable from person to person, most patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease will experience low-grade continuous but tolerable pain that will occasionally flare (intensify) for a few days or more. Pain symptoms can vary, but generally are:
1. Centered on the lower back, although it can radiate to the hips and legs
2. Frequently worse when sitting, as the discs experience a heavier load than when patients are standing, walking or even lying down.
3. Exacerbated by certain movements, particularly bending or twisting.
Although degenerative disc disease is relatively common in aging adults, it seldom requires surgery. When medical attention is warranted, the majority of patients respond well to non-operative forms of treatment like chiropractic manipulative therapy, physical therapy, or Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression therapy
It is time for you to be well informed and educated on the options available to you for your continued health. Gone are the days when the doctors say they want you to perform a certain action and you follow blindly without knowing why! Ask all of your doctors to sit down, slow down and explain this to me so i can understand what it is you are trying to say. As always please feel free to contact me about any questions you may have about this article.
