THEME: GOD’S MERCY AND GENEROSITY ARE UNSURPASSED – All throughout Scripture, God cares for those who suffer and are vulnerable: physically, emotionally and spiritually. The greatest sign of God’s care is in the gift of his Son, Jesus, who removed the power of sin through the sacrifice of his own life. The Church now stands as the body of Christ, caring for others and showing them God’s mercy, which is unsurpassed.
LITURGY OF THE WORD – In the first reading, the widow who Elijah encountered was able to eat for a year. The author of the Book of Hebrews says that Christ will bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of the poor widow who gave generously.
COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND – If someone in your family or a neighbor is homebound, in a nursing home, in the hospital or recovering at home after a hospital stay and would like a visit and Communion, our Deacon, Frank Marino, and other Eucharistic ministers are available to make those calls. Please call the rectory to arrange for a visit.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK – November 17/18 The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be administered after the homily at both Masses.

PARISH MISSION – As part of our ongoing 165th Anniversary year celebration, we are sponsoring a
mission entitled, The Loving Mercy of God. The mission will be presented by Fr. Brian Walker, O.P., from the Saint Pius V Dominican Community of Chicago, Illinois, at 7:00 p.m. December 2, 3 and 4 in the church. Admission is free. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Dominican men in formation and older friars. Be sure to invite your family and friends from other parishes to join us for this soul nourishing experience.
AGING RELIGIOUS NEED YOUR HELP. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today’s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and
more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.
STEWARDSHIP – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time:“I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living. ” (Mark 12:43-44) Jesus gets right to the point – we are all called to give money to support the mission of the Church, regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant! Giving money to support the mission of our local parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish ministries. When you make a financial offering, is it from your “first fruits” or from what is “left over”?
165th ANNIVERSARY CLOSING MASS: As we approach the holiday season, we want to remind you to save room on your busy calendar to celebrate the closing Mass of our 165th Anniversary year on December 16 at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. The Niles Catholic Women’s Club will host a free brunch at Ciminero’s following Mass. Watch upcoming bulletins for reservation forms. We hope you and your family will join us for this special celebration.

PIROHY SALE – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SS. Cyril & Methodius) – Friday, November 16th and December 14th. Four varieties will be offered: potato, sweet cabbage, sauerkraut, and lekvar (prune). The cost is $5.50 dozen.
Haluski (cabbage & noodles) $3.75/1½ lb. bag is also available. Advanced orders can be placed by calling 330-393-0781 on Wednesday and Thursday Pick up is Friday, November 16th and December 14th, from noon until 4:00 p.m.

JFK ALUMNI SPONSORING THANKSGIVING DINNER JFK Alumni are sponsoring their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner to be held at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Hall on Route 169. They are now accepting donations of turkeys, stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn,
pies and other desserts, concentrated punch and coffee. You may drop off donated items at St. Stephen Church rectory at 129 W. Park Avenue, Niles, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by November 16, Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve and clean up at the St. Vincent Dining Hall on Thanksgiving Day. As we near the end of our interior and exterior church restoration campaign, we want to update you on a few things. Our railings have been installed in time for the upcoming winter weather. Thresholds are being replaced and the confessionals are being renovated.
The original campaign is slated to end in December of 2018 to coincide with the end of our 165th Anniversary year. We thank those of you who have completed your pledge, as well as those who faithfully make their monthly payments. If you have not fulfilled your pledge, we ask you to try to do so, by that time.
The parishioners of St. Stephen have always been responsive to the needs of our church, and now we have this beautiful place of worship to show for our efforts. Because of your generous sacrifices, we can be proud to call ourselves the Family of St. Stephen, and proud to showcase our improvements when those from other parishes come to join us for our parish Mission in December and our 165th Anniversary closing Mass.
