How Do We Treat the Messenger? Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, be-cause we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about our-selves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like?

Cómo Tratamos al Memsajero No debemos precipitarnos a definir quié-nes son “los malvados” y quiénes (es decir nosotros) son los justos. Tendemos a clasificar rápidamente a los demás como malos, porque solemos considerarnos buenas personas. No nos gusta que una voz profética nos critique con malas noticias sobre nuestro propio com-portamiento. No nos gusta que nos reprochen que hemos transgredido la ley ni que nos acu-sen de no haber actuado acorde a nuestra formación. Puede que condenemos e insultemos a quienes nos enfrentan a estas verdades sobre nosotros mismos, pero si fuéramos realmente buenos, les agradeceríamos por ayudarnos a permanecer en el camino correcto. Éste es el trato que le dieron a los profetas y el trato que le dieron a Jesús. ¿Es éste también el trato que les damos a las personas cuyos mensajes no nos gustan?

Treasures From Our Tradition

How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Phila-delphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparo-chial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the “Mother School” of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were established to preserve the culture and language of the “old country,” and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run nation-al schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other plac-es, such as Quebec, publicly-funded “separate schools” were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enroll-ment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require considerable sacri-fice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Últimamente, hay mucho interés en los ángeles y sobre todo en los ar-cángeles. Según el catecismo católico, los ángeles existen para glorificar y servir a Dios y para ayudar con el plan salvífico de Jesucristo, cooperan-do con nuestras buenas obras. Lamentablemente muchos, en especial los de la New Age, se interesan sólo en los ángeles con el fin de utilizarlos en lugar de dejarse guiar por ellos. La Tradición ha designado una jerarquía de 9 rangos entre los seres espirituales. Los serafines son los primeros y más cercanos a Dios y los ángeles son los últimos y más cercanos a la humanidad. En esta jerar-quía, los arcángeles son los penúltimos en poder, aunque sí son los más buscados por su responsabilidad de cuidar los cuatro puntos cardinales de la creación. SB 320 (Leyva, D-Chino) would require the on-campus health centers of public universities in California to offer abortion-inducing drugs

like RU-486 as advocates continue to promote abortions in any way they can. SB 320 also invites health centers to offer abortion counseling services to their students but is specifically written in such a way to

exclude pro-life counseling. SB 320 inappropriately requires the State Treasurer to accept donations and administer an abortion promotion fund. The state of Cali-

fornia should have no role in encouraging or funding abortions, which take the life of a human being, in our public post-secondary edu-cational institutions - or anywhere, for that matter. The Senate Appropriations Committee staff estimates the start up cost for training health center staff to be in the millions but has not even provided estimates yet for the follow-up and liability costs.

Let your representative know there should never be an incentive to abort any child, and that you oppose this one-sided bill.

P.S. This bill has been debated for nearly two-years now. Thousands of members have already sent one or more emails opposing this bad public policy. Now is not the time to stop. We must continue to oppose SB 320. Please take action again as it moves onto the Assembly floor for a vote.
