CONFIRMATION This Saturday we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with some of youth. We will have additional celebrations on September 26 and October 3rd. Thank you to Ann LaBeck and her volunteer catechists who have helped prepare these confirmation candidates, their families and sponsors for this special event and a special thank you to Fr. Tony for conferring this special Sacrament.

This Sacrament is often misunderstood as a time when we reaffirm the desire to be Catholics since the decision was made for us at infant Baptism. However, as Bishop Mueggenborg wrote in an article for NW Catholic “The Sacrament of Confirmation celebrates and bestows the grace of the Holy Spirit who is poured into our lives so we can be faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ and confront the many challenges we face in living our faith as his disciples. Confirmation strengthens and seals the gift of the Holy Spirit we first received in Baptism. Being confirmed is thus the beginning of a new mission as an active and fully empowered disciple of Jesus Christ. Equipped with the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can be authentic and courageous witnesses to Christ's death and resurrection in our daily endeavors.”

Congratulations to the young people receiving this Sacrament today. Let us pray for them that they may use the gifts of the Holy Spirit especially the gifts of faith, hope, and love, to serve as a witness of God’s grace to their families, their friends, and the wider community.

ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE FAMILY FAITH FORMATION

Our Whole Community Catechesis family faith formation program will be offered this fall. Maggie and her team of catechists are preparing for online faith formation. Our hope is to present a variety of opportunities for faith formation and Sacramental Preparation for families and individuals. Registration forms are available and the calendar are available on our website.

DISASTER RELIEF The unhealthy air quality over the last week has made life even more challenging for many of us. However, it serves as a reminder that there are thousands who are suffering greatly from recent natural disasters. Hurricanes and the wildfires engulfing the West have taken a huge toll on the environment but the loss of life and home is devasting. Archbishop Etienne has asked parishes in the Archdiocese of Seattle to take up a special collection in support of relief to those affected. You can drop off a donation in the collection baskets, at the parish office or go online to make your donation. See our website, Facebook page or make your donation directly to Catholic Charities USA

Question of the Week September 20th

25th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Theme: It is never too late to enter the reign of God.

Question for Children: How do you experience God being gen-erous to you: through your family, friends, school, or parish?

Question for Youth: This Gospel reminds us that God is always seeking us out and welcoming us into his generous love. Through whom has God reached out to you? Who is always encouraging you to say "yes" to God?

Question for Adults: Using Jesus' parable as your starting point, describe in your own words how God will treat those who come to be part of the church, even those who come late.

General Intercession for the parish: Let us pray in thanksgiving for the gift of the church in our lives, leading and guiding us to ever deeper communion with Christ.

M y W a n t s , O t h e r s ' N e e d s What is fair? Sometimes what is fair is different that what is just. In today's gospel, Jesus told the parable of the landlord who gave a just wage. But, in the eyes of the workers it wasn't fair. The difference was point of view. When we focus upon ourselves (like the workers), fairness means getting the same as every-one else. When we look through God's eyes, we give so the needs of others will be fulfilled, even if they receive more than others.

Brainstorm a list of "My Wants, Others' Needs" to dis-cuss the difference between what is fair and what is just. On a piece of newsprint or poster paper, create two columns. Mark one "I want..." and the other "Others' need..." Tell your family "others" mean those outside the family. Now challenge your family mem-bers to brainstorm a pair: one personal desire and one need for another person. The want can be as out-rageous as possible, but the need must truly be a need. After about 20 pairs, ask your family to cross out unrealistic or frivolous desires. Now compare the columns. How many needs do others have? How many wants do your family members have? Which column is more important? Why? Finally, devise a plan to help others with their needs. Some family members may want to give up a few de-

sires to help the needy. -word-sunday.com

St. Madeleine Sophie Parish September 19 & 20, 2020

Reflection for September 20, 2020 By: Ron Czarney

“Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

I’m sure many of you have participated in a team sport at some time in your lifelike soccer, or baseball, or basketball. And when you are on the field, or the court, you’re there not only to compete against another opponent, but you’re there to win, right? But, as we all know, life isn’t always fair, is it. Of course not. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But, I have to tell you, Jesus really took me for a loop on this parable: “the last will be first, and the first will be last?” REALLY?!

I think that’s why this parable is hard for me to swallow. I’m a very com-petitive person, and I like to win, not just sometimes, but ALL THE TIME! But, there goes Jesus again, saying things that don’t make sense, at least to us. Can you imagine the surprise — or disappointment — for those workers who were hired at the beginning of the day, only to find out that those who were hired at the “eleventh hour” would receive the same wage that they did? How would you feel if that happened to you? I know I would raise a stink and demand to know why I was treated so “unfairly.” Or was I?

In our society, workers are usually paid for the amount of work they do. If

they work eight hours, they’re paid for eight hours of work. If they work only one hour, they’re paid for that one hour of work, right? Seems fair enough. So, what in the world is Jesus telling us? Well, He wants us to “see” that no matter when we decide to join the laborers, God gives His love — all of His love — to every per-son without exception as long as they open themselves to this love. It doesn’t real-ly matter whether that happens early in our life, or later, like the “eleventh hour.” God’s love can never be earned, only accepted. Kind of reminds me of the Good Thief, Dismas, who waited until his last moment on Earth, before he joined Jesus as one of His workers. And Jesus told Dismas that he would be with Him in Para-dise that very day!

The fact that the latecomers worked for only an hour does not make their

needs any less than those who came earlier. Aren’t we fortunate that we have a kind and merciful God Who loves us dearly? How big is your need for God to-day? Let’s pray that we will always find a way to be part of God’s workforce, be-cause we know He will always treat us fairly — and with unconditional love. AMEN.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO COMPLETE YOUR 2020 CENSUS The 2020 Census is happening now. You can complete your questionnaire online (https://my2020census.gov/), by phone (844-330-2020), or by mail. The 2020 Census asks a few simple questions about you and everyone who was living with you on April 1, 2020. The 2020 Census counts everyone living in the United States and its five territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Is-lands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Your response helps to direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services.

YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO REGISTER TO VOTE at https://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/voters/.
