Treasures From Our Tradition The wonderful diversity of life and wor-ship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constan-tinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christian-izing the East up to Russia and Poland. Po-land was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the reli-gious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Po-land remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that what-ever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accus-tomed to peaceful collaboration among Chris-tians of East and West, a situation that chal-lenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division.

We ask that you keep us in your prayer during these days. I will be away Mon., Aug. 26-Fri., Aug. 29. During those days, Mass will be scheduled as usual.

Oppose SB 24 Novena to stop further abortion expansion in CA Senate Bill24 would create a fund for UCs and CSUs to provide medical abortions in their student health centers. We op-pose this bill knowing that abortion ends the life of a de-veloping child in the womb and leaves psychological scars for the mother. Our college students do not want abortion! Instead of abortion, the legislature should focus on serving the 26% of college students who are parenting to achieve their educational dreams. California students deserve bet-ter than abortion. DID YOU KNOW? Keep an Eye Out During Social Events at School and Church Now that your children are getting ready to head back to school, it’s a good time to re-familiarize yourself with the school or church property. Keep a special lookout for any rooms or areas where supervision is low, and where a predator could take a child without being noticed. During school events, these are the plac-es to watch. You should also take note of any locked doors, areas under bleachers or in stairwells, or anywhere else suspi-cious. Child safety should be a priority for all events. Learn more from the VIRTUS® article “Premises Safety… Always a High Priority” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Welcome the Stranger We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and sto-ries on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their coun-tries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the disci-pline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. .
