Treasures From Our Tradition This is the year of St. Paul, and so one of the most visited churches of Rome is also one of the most beautiful: the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Like so many other churches, it was founded by the mas-ter-builder Emperor Constantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the first anniversary of St. Peter’s crucifixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was run-ning low on bricks, apparently, because the first church was tiny. In 386 it was de-molished and today’s basilica begun. This vast and towering space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth century. The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, per-haps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly aban-doned city. In 1823 a great fire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul’s was destroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its resto-ration. Even the Russian czar and the vice-roy of Egypt gave alabaster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernac-le. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treas-ures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. Unlike other Roman churches, St. Paul’s stands in a gar-den-like suburban neighborhood, surround-ed by stately palm trees, gardens, and parks.

DID YOU KNOW? Common Tricks Strangers Use to Lure Children Are you familiar with the news show segments testing children’s safety knowledge? They often feature “strangers” trying to lure children with offers of ice cream, modeling con-tracts, or other goodies. They know that while many children are taught to avoid strangers, they may not be taught to recognize abduction tactics. For more information on common tricks predators may use to lure chil-dren from The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, vis-it http://www.kidsmartz.org/CommonTricks.

Devotion to Mary The First Five Saturdays devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary corre-sponds to the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal, when, on July 13, 1917, after showing three young vision-aries a vision of hell, she told them that various grave trials would be coming upon the earth. Our Lady revealed that these chastisements could be prevented through the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and by the faithful regularly offering their Communions on Five First Saturdays in reparation for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary asks the faithful that on the first Saturday of five consecutive months: Go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, Recite five decades of the rosary, and Keep her 15 minutes of company while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary. Thus we invite everyone to participate in this de-votion and make reparation starting February 3rd as the 5 consecutive Satur-days would be completed by June 2nd. The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is June 9th and this would be a great gift to our loving Mother. Join us at 815AM Mass on First Saturday and don’t forget to keep our Mother 15 minutes of company before or after re-citing the rosary!
