“The recent reopening of our churches for individual private prayer was an importantmilestone on our journey towards resuming communal worship. Our churches thathave opened have put in place all the measures needed to ensure the risks of virustransmission are minimised. With the easing of restrictions, we tread carefully alongthe path that lies ahead. Our lives have been changed by the experience of thepandemic and it is clear that we cannot simply return to how things were beforelockdown. We must rebuild what it means to be Eucharistic communities, holding fastto all that we hold dear, while at the same time exploring creative ways to meetchanging circumstances. It is important to reaffirm that, at present, the obligation toattend Sunday Mass remains suspended. Given there is no Sunday obligation, we askyou to consider the possibility of attending Mass on a weekday when possible. This willease the pressure of numbers for Sunday celebrations and allow a gradual return tothe Eucharist for more people. Masses will continue to be live-streamed for those whoare self-isolating to protect the vulnerable. When we return to Mass there will be somedifferences in how we celebrate. For the time being, there will be no singing. We askeveryone to respect and follow the guidance that will be issued.” Statement from Bishops.
