Thanks to everyone…for your help at our parish picnic. There were challenges this year (as always)…but especially because of our building project. We also moved the picnic closer to our Parish Feast Day – Ss. Peter & Paul (June 28-29

th)…and avoided conflict with the International Horseradish Festival which is

early in June.

There will be a picnic/BBQ style lunch on Sunday, June 26th after 10:30 Mass

just to enjoy each other’s company and to say ‘Thank You!’ Come on over and relax after a busy two days of picnic.

Last Sunday’s Gospel lesson…had us listen in on Jesus asking several ques-tions of his disciples. The first was somewhat easy… ‘Who do people say that I am?’ The second was a bit more challenging… ‘Who do you say that I am?’ It was our famous patron saint… St. Peter…who spoke-up first and clearly… ‘You are the Christ (Messiah/Anointed) of God!’

Even though the disciples had witnessed many signs that Jesus had per-formed they were limited in their full understanding of those signs and their implications about Jesus’ true identity and his mission. Jesus tries patiently to help them to see that his life and ministry was not a program of military con-quest of the enemy (Roman occupation). Rather his life was a life of loving service which would require great sacrifice…his own death on the cross. But it would also require of them the same commitment…a life of loving service.

Jesus tells them and we get to hear the same message… ‘If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me’. Being a disciple is not a part-time job or commitment…but a decision for a lifetime.

This Sunday…we have the privilege of celebrating the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul which is our Parish’s feast-day. St. Peter and St. Paul played such an important role in the life and growth of the early Christian Church that they cannot be ignored.

The Lord chose both of these men to carry out the mission of establishing the Church on a solid foundation and to spread it into the entire world. We think of St. Peter whom the Lord called from his life as a fisherman to be the rock upon which the Lord intended to establish the Church and to whom he entrusted the ‘Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven’. Peter was to form, strengthen, and build the Church keeping it united in faith and love… ‘Feed my lambs…tend my sheep’. These remain central to the ministry of Peter’s successor and really to all of us in the Church.

St. Paul called directly by Christ from his life as persecutor of the Christian Way…to be the great apostle to the Gentiles…the rest of the world! Paul worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel of Christ to the farthest ends of the known world. He finally was imprisoned in Rome and along with St. Peter was martyred under the Christian persecution of the Emperor Nero during the early to mid sixties (CE 63). We also must carry on the mission to ‘Go and make disciples of all the nations’.

SSPP parish must see itself in the light of the lives and missions of both of these saints…found & strengthen the Church…and in a real missionary spirit bring the Gospel of Christ to all!

Welcome…and congratulations to those who have been accepted into the Or-der of the Catechumens and our candidates preparing for entrance into ‘Full Communion with the Catholic Church’. As a parish we have lots to pray for…and especially to share our catholic way of life with our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has sent to us.

Knights of Columbus Queen of Hearts Raffle The excitement is building and the jackpot is growing($2,000.00)! Reminder: Construction Start Will Bring Parking Challenges

Construction activity for our new Gathering Space/Office/Fellowship Hall begins June 6 with the demolition of the former parish office building. This also means that construction activ-ity will limit use of the south parking lot. Alternative parking areas include the two municipal lots on Clay Street (about 35 parking spots). In addition, Home Fed-eral has generously allowed us to use its lot on Clay (12 park-ing spots). The recycle bins in the Manning Hall lot have been moved near the building, which will free up 10 parking spots.

As a courtesy to those who have difficulty walking farther distances, we are asking parishioners who are more able to not park on Johnson Street (about 25 spaces). This is voluntary but will go a long way in reducing the inconven-ience for those who are not as mobile. Other considerations during construction: There will be no access to the church from the south doors.

The school entrance will be modified and drop off and pick pro-cedures will change. The school will be communicating details with parents.

There will be the usual construction annoyances like noise and dust.

Now Accepting Applications for the

Permanent Deacon Class of 2021

The Office for the Diaconate of the Diocese of Spring-

field in Illinois announces a new period for application for ad-

mission to diaconal formation.

To be considered, applicants must be men of deep faith,

prayer, and love, have the desire and ability to collaborate in

ministry, have the ability to pursue graduate level theology

courses, be in good health both physically and psychologically, normally be at least 32 years

of age to begin the formation process and not be over 62 years of age at the time of ordina-

tion, have resided in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois for at least two years, and have the

recommendation and support of one’s pastor and parish community.

If an applicant is married, he must be in a stable, mature, and valid marriage for at least

seven years, and have the consent of his wife to pursue the deacon formation process. He

must also be prepared to embrace the commitment to life-long celibacy should his wife pre-

cede him in death. If he is single, he must demonstrate the ability to accept a commitment to

lifelong celibacy since a man may not marry after ordination to the diaconate.

The new period of formation will begin in January of 2017 and will

consist of formation classes one weekend per month through ordination in the

summer of 2021. Diaconal candidates will also have parish pastoral assign-

ments during their time in formation.

Men who are interested in diaconal ministry should first speak with a

priest or deacon in their parish. An informational meeting with the formation team will be

held in the atrium at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield on Sunday,

July 31st, at 2:00PM. The Cathedral complex is located between Fifth and Sixth Streets at

Lawrence Avenue.

Volunteers

St. John Evangelical United Church of Christ needs volunteers to help with the Summer Camp Feeding Program at their church, 307 W. Clay St., Collins-ville, on Monday-Thursday, 12-2pm, from June 6-July 28. This is a free lunch program for children 4-18 years old in a summer camp format providing fun activities for kids after lunch. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and will-ing to work one or two days per week for the 8 week program to be reading buddies, encourage students in the reading lab and teach arts and crafts and P.E. This program may interest McGivney or Collinsville High School students who need volunteer hours as part of their service requirements. Con-tact Dana at 344-2526 if you are inter-ested. This weekend we ask you to make your annual Offertory Gift pledge to God by walking the card to the altar as a sign of your commitment to discipleship. Making our Offertory gift is a powerful moment as we are putting what God has given us back into service for Him.

An Offertory gift card was mailed to your home and there are some in the pews. We are asking you to return it at Mass or by mail. No names are required. This is between you and God. But we ask you to return the card to help us know how much you are planning to give so that we can plan God’s Work—and hopefully do more of it!
