The hospital’s public relations officer,Phumza Morai, said the aim of the campaign was to encourage mothers withknown chronic conditions to plan theirpregnancy in order avoid complications

that may result in poor fetal or maternalcondition outcomes.

“In the course of this campaign, a totalof 198 women responded to the call andwere screened for various health conditions,” said Morai.

Of those, there two cardiac cases, onewith triplets, one cancer of the cervix, fivewith complicated hypertension and several other conditions.

“We have seen a significantly highernumber of pregnant teenagers sufferingfrom pregnancy induced hypertension. This is mostly influenced by the fact thatthe pregnancy was unplanned and mostteenagersarenotphysicallyandfinanciallyready to start a family,” said Morai.

She strongly advised teenagers to abstain up until they reach an acceptable

child bearing age and to ensure that whentheyfallpregnant, theyhaveastrongfamily support.

“We advised older women to have children during the child bearing age whichnormally starts from 18 up to 35 years, because after the age of 35, fertility is reducedand the risk of medical conditions and congenital abnormalities is increased.”

Sister Zithobile Ngxumza, Sister Mgwatyu and Mbambo Labour Ward Midwifery Advisors explained a number of Do’sand Don’ts during pregnancy, the signswhen a woman is about to give birth andthey emphasized on the importance of attending the antenatal clinic during the firsttrimester. Fifty shadesof sauciness>> A sequel is already in the works for 2016

PRECIOUS GUMEDE>>[email protected]

THE anticipated premiere of Fiftyshades of Grey caused excitementlast weekend at the Shelly Centre

cinema.Coinciding with Valentine’s weekend,

the turnup was great as many coupleshad included it in their list of fun todothings.

The threevolume book from whichthe movie is adapted was released in 2011,and has fascinated women the world overwith its sexually explicit and raunchyscenes.

In the movie, literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview billionaireChristian Grey and discovers a beautiful,

yet troubled, man. She discovers herselfwanting to be with him, despite his stalkerlike tendencies.

She soon discovers Grey is consumedby a desire to control everything, including her life.

Asked what she thought of the movieDevicki Chetty said the screen version wasa bit of a letdown.

“It was very nice, but the book hadmore detail. Part two will need to havemore action,” said Chetty.

“I expected more and can’t wait forthe second one, there was too little of akick. It was more romance,” said Anna Perumal

Most moviegoers the Fever spoke toalso expressed disappointment sayingthat most of the “action” in the book version did not make it to screen.

“I actually enjoyed the movie eventhough the ending was abrubt and leftme hanging,” said Siphesihle Silangwe.

A sequel is already in the works for a2016 release.

‘Fifty shades of Grey’ and its subsequent screen adaptation hasbeen a hit with women the worldover.

I AM a happy person by nature. My resolve is: there is no point in being unhappy. It weighs me down, makes me vul

nerable to all kinds of things that I don't

want to be vulnerable to and is crappy forthe universe, with all the already bad karma being put out there by...oh yeah, everybody.

So instead of sulking and gaping, whichI'm not saying I don't do – I'd be inhumanif I didn't ever do those things – I quicklydeal with it, put it behind me and move on.I'm of the belief that every problem can besolved with a bit of thought and diligenceand if after thought and diligence there isno solution...then maybe your problem iswrong or doesn’t exist.

We so readily complain about everything and the kitchen sink that we forgetthe actual problems there are in the world.I mean can we really compare the flat tyreon the way to work that made you all of

20 minutes late to the starvation of a childin a wartorn country?

Now don't get me wrong, I am in no waytrying to belittle your flat tyres and theheaps of yelling you had to take from yourboss, but really, can it compare to the truepain and suffering of that child or of thatcountry?

Can it compare to a man once living anaveragelifebeingthrowntothestreetslosing his family and being reduced to a beggar because job loss in our country is a veryreal truth?

It's really disappointing that we haveso much yet appreciate it so little.

Obviously if you are reading this youhave access to a newspaper in a functionalarea and are not totally bad off. We live

lives that could be spectacular simply because we live freely in a place where theworst natural disaster is heavy rain.

But no, we would much rather harpon the smartphone we want, but can'tget...immediately, the roadblock fromwhich you got a ticket because you weren'twearing a seat belt or the astronomicalfight you had with so and so over such andsuch and now nothing will ever be thesame.

I'm sure you will get that smartphoneeventually and the ticket will be ignoreduntil a summons comes around and youbegrudgingly pay it off and “so and so” willforgive you and all will be well or “so andso” will go away and you may be all the better for it.

But, look at that, it's all you, you, youisn't it?

We are selfish creatures, human beings,I admit, I most definitely am, but I appreciate what I have and I admit what I am.

We live in a time of denial and selfloathing... it's not healthy at all.

I think we should be happy for all wehave and appreciate it. That crappy job, isa job at least ...that Nokia cellphone is better than nothing at all, that ticket for notwearing a seat belt could be the wake upcall you need to avoid future tickets andpotentially save your life.

We have so much it's our duty to makethe best of it. Smile a little, take a momentto consider what if you didn't have whatyou have today.

Don't complain because times aretough and cash is tight, aspire to bettertimes through positivity and hard work.Man makes money, but money will nevermake a man.

Be happy and positive and the universewill pay it back to you.

Live happily, love completely and laughheartily ... it's the only thing people will remember when all you are is a memory.

Appreciate, initiate, resonate

TOURISM 360JUSTIN MACKRORY:

CEO SOUTH COASTTOURISM

A sunny and safe EasterTHE long weekends over the Easter holiday period is allbut upon us and it is incumbent on all to ensure that ourvisitors (and residents) have wonderful experiences onour lovely beaches and at our many attractions.

Recently there have been a few incidents wherebyvisitors have been robbed on one or two beaches andin every instance guests were situated in very isolatedparts of those parts of the coast.

We need to urge our beach goers that it is imperativeto stay within easy sight of other sun worshippers, lifeguards and lawenforcement officials.

Such instances of opportunistic crime are prevalentin many of our country’s tourism hot spots. We at UguSouth Coast Tourism along with our Sunny and SafeCampaign partners will continue to promote safetyawareness for our guests and beach users.

We urge people not to take expensive items on tobeaches this merely attracts the eye of criminals. It isbest to be close to other groups and the main beaches

which usually have enforcement personnel on hand.Last summer season was generally peaceful and we

wish that every day in our destination is as hasslefreeas possible. It takes the collective effort of the tourismfraternity, public interest groups the authorities and ourown populace to establish a safer destination for thebenefit of all users.

All need to be vigilant and caring of other people’swell being (without scare mongering) – in so doing I believe we will ensure that our paradise reduces the prospect of unfortunate incidents.

The other day I was at a gathering in the Midlandsand one young family man said: “I will go to the SouthCoast any day its beaches are the best in the province.”

We need to retain this type of sentiment and by keeping the Sunny and Safe message alive as I am convincedthat sporadic reports on unwanted incidents will diminish. Have a great week – it is a great time of year downhere.

IWASmortifiedandgreatlydisillu-sioned having watched the fiascothat erupted during the State of theNation (SONA) on 12 February.

Thedisruptionanddisturbancefrom theEFF comes as no surpriseto the nation, but what was reallydisconcerting and disgraceful wasthe tactless and boorishmanner inwhich the ruling party (ANC) han-dled the entire matter.

From the jamming of the trans-mission signals, to the SAPS beingcalled into Parliament chambers –this party blundered their waythrough the SONAbeing complete-ly undiplomatic and injudiciousandcommittingagrossviolationofthe Constitution, the same Consti-tution thatmany fought for, even tothe point of death, to ensure that itbecomes the foundation of our de-

mocracy — a democracy thatseems to be brushed off and tram-pled upon by the ANC.

SONAtookusback to thedaysofthe oppressive apartheid regimewhenthegovernmentofthedayop-pressed and controlled everythingandtightlyheld thereinsoverwhatwas broadcasted and what thepeople had access to.

The brute force that was usedin the removal of the EFFMPswasredolent of the apartheid securityforces violently removing protes-tors inaneffort tosilencetheircriesfor liberation.

The evasiveness of the speakerof the house in answering simplequestionsviz, “WastheSAPScalledintothechambers?”wasindicativeof her bias and incompetence infunctioning as a neutral speaker of

the house.Shehowever, chose to act as the

president’s personal bodyguardandspokesperson.It’stimetosanc-tion a new competent speaker ofthe house.

For too long the ANC has beengiven carte blanche in ruling thiscountry, but no more.

It is time for truthandaccount-ability. The ruling party has beenenforcing laws on others yet thinkof themselves as above the law.

The reaction of President JacobZuma to the debacle that unrav-elled inParliamentwas completelyimproper and unbecoming for aleader of a nation.

To merely laugh off a matterwithout somuchas some explana-tion toplacate the situationor evenan apology to the nation and the

entireworldthatwaswatchingwasunacceptable and very suggestiveof the ineptandunproficient leaderthat he is.It most certainly doesn’t augur

well for him as the leader of thisnation.

I don’t foresee a favourable andprosperousfutureforourcountryifthis is the calibre of leadership thatthe ANC is producing to rule in ourland.

This ANC-ruled governmentneeds to be more accountable andtransparent to the citizens whomthey serve and to stop hiding be-hind their bullying tactics.

But thenagainhonesty,account-ability and truth are not qualitiesthey can identify with.

SONA has made it lucid andcrystal clear that the ANC doesn’thavewhat it takes to rule SouthAf-rica with wisdom, integrity, ac-countability and honesty.

So, ANC your time is up.

WATCHING news reports andreading stories about matriccaused a time of reflection for merecently.

Icompletedmyschoolingintheearly nineties and it seems asthough I schooled in anothercountry.

Firstly, the requirements andpass rates were extremely high, which is not a bad thing consider-ingwewereabout tobeunleashedinto the working world.

Secondly, the feeling of seeingyourname in thepapermeantyoupassedandcouldentertertiaryed-ucation because it meant you re-ceived good marks.

Today, you need 30% to pass, which means you could get an Eaggregate.

Pupils don’t have a high targetto aim for, yet it is still a challengeto achieve.

This was unheard of in thenineties.

I amextremely grateful to havecompleted my schooling then.

However, I would like to writeone of the matric papers to see ifI would have passedwith straightAs if I wrote in this decade.

It scares me because these pu-pils are probably not ready for thenext stage in their lives. Matric isthe tip of the iceberg.

So if you have recently been taking cold showerstodryoffand possiblyseenyourneighbour’sboatfloatoff its trailer, you know it’s time to indulge in cold food, and what way better than chilled soups

Despite cold cucumber soup the other more commonly known cold soup is Vichyssoise that consists ofa blend of cream, leeks, seasoning, potatoes, andonions.

I am certain that throughout the ages, potato souphas been eaten, however the reinvention of Vichyssoise although debatable is often credited to beengenuinely French.

I however, propose that we be a tad more courageous with our offerings and if it all goes pear shaped, attribute it to the muggy humid weather.Chilled strawberry soup

Tipping and gratuity etiquette>> Every country has different etiquette

EVERY country has a different etiquette when it comes to whom to tip,how much to tip and when it would

be rude to offer a tip.In South Africa the tourism, hospitality

and service industries often employ peoplefrom previously disadvantaged areas

within the local community, many ofwhom do not earn a large basic salary andtherefore rely on tips from customers in order to survive financially.

The following amounts are basic guidelines and you can always reward excellentservice with a larger gratuity.

Accommodation tippingA standard 10% of the total bill can be

paid on checkout and this should usuallybe distributed among the various staffmembers including cleaners, waiters, porters, kitchen and garden staff and in somecases reception and management. Youcan check with the individual establishment on their inhouse policy. If you wishto specify a certain tip for a specific department of individual you could either pay thisdirectly into the hand of the person/s concerned or hand a marked envelope withcash to the receptionist on check out.

At game reserves, guests may tip rangers and trackers individually check withmanagement to determine best practiceat each establishment.

Airport, train station and hotel porters tipping

Porters are usually given a tip of aroundR5 per item of luggage, paid directly at thetime of checking in or out.

Restaurant tippingA tip of 10% – 20% is standard but do

check with the manager as some restau

rants in South Africa add on a standardservice charge to tables with over a certainnumber of diners. If you tip over and abovethis included charge it is unlikely your errorwill be pointed out and your tip will be seenas rewarding exceptional service over andabove the basic charge.

Health and beauty tippingIt’s always a treat to indulge in a selec

tion of spa treatments while on vacation(massages, body wraps, facials and thelike) and in addition many holiday makersplan a trip or two to the hair salon. Considera 10% – 15% tip to the stylist or beautytherapist and don’t forget to leave something small for the person who washedyour hair, or ask the stylist to split the gratuity between them.

Petrol-station attendant tippingIn this country, petrol stations are

mannedbyattendantswhowillrefuelyourvehicle, clean your windscreen and offer tocheck your oil, water and tyre pressure. Atip here will depend on how much they dofor you. In general these men and womenare very friendly and cheerful and deserve

a tip in thanks of service with a smile. It iscustomary to pay in silver coins at your discretion.

Car guard tippingYou will find that pretty much wherever

you park there will be an official or unofficial ‘car guard’ on hand offering to watchyour vehicle for you. You do not need to tipthese individuals unless you feel that theyare offering a valuable service (in some areas you may be very thankful to know thata pair of eyes is looking after your car whileyou’re otherwise occupied). Shoppingmalls will have paid guards as will somebeach parking areas etc. Give a tip as andwhen you feel it warranted. If a car guardbecomes aggressive, demanding or threatening contact the nearest security guard orthe shopping centre management and report the matter.

Tour guide and coach driver tippingIt is standard to tip tourist guides and

coach drivers at the end of the day. Sometimes on half or one day tours, the driverIS the guide, whereas on larger / longertrips there will be both a driver and a tourguide. The recommended tip is usually anything between R10.00 and R20.00 pertourist on a day tour and R15.00 – R30.00per tourist per day on overland and/or localcoach tours. This will be divided betweenthe tour guide and the driver.

Balancing yourenergy all day

SEAN PILLAY

EVER found yourself so drained be-fore going to work or school ordrained before, during or after yourgym workout? Here are some tips tohelp you balance your energy all day.

I call it, the three-way energy bal-ancesystem.Manypeoplespendtimeusingupenergyandnotimereplacingit. Spending hours at the gym or atwork without refueling leaves youdrained and tired. The question iswhy.

In order to have enough energy, three things needs to motivated.

• I would say 45% is what you eatand when you eat. Having the righttypeof foodstomatchyourbloodtypeis vital. It will determine your per-formance for the day. A mix of greenvegetables, fruit, chicken and fish, shouldbepartofyourlunchboxeveryday.

Having six small healthy and vari-etyofmealseverytwohourshelpsyouhave consistent energy all day.

• Drinking at least two litres of fil-teredorpurifiedwaterall day, duringand after meals. Have more depend-ing on the weather.

• Having at least seven to eighthours’sleeppreparesyoufor thenextday. The mistake many people makeis not getting enough sleep at night.

They then work during the daywithout takingabreaktorest, torefu-el or to hydrate.

This slows them down more.Having a small break to rest andrefuel during the day will help youthinkclearerandgetthejobdonewithease.

The results you want will beachieved by eating right and havingenough rest to recover.

Don’t work harder, work smarter.• Eat - fuel up.• Water - hydrate.• Sleep - recover well.
