Shortly after- wards they were shocked to hear that their log cabin was burning. A spokesperson for Rocky Bay Resorts told the Fever that the area had suffered its worst weather for a year on the Friday and Saturday, with some 200 mm rain measured at the resort in that period. A spin-off was the loss of water pressure in damaged pipes. The Umzinto fire sta- tion was called at around 10am, but the line was on voice mail. By the time a response was raised and the fire engines arrived, the log cabin had been completely destroyed. With it went the bride’s wedding dress, their clothes, luggage, com- puters and other posses- sions. Staff and strangers tried to help, grabbing buckets and joining the firefighters. “The fire was sadden- ing for the victims and us but we were happy with the absence of injuries and we give our unquali- fied gratitude to the gal- lant efforts to douse the flames by all concerned,” said the resort’s spokes- person. No budget to cleartidal poolsSETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]

IN what has become an annual if not bi-annual

crunch, the Umdoni Municipality is struggling to ar-range to pump out the sand-filled tidal pools in timefor the holiday season. The speed with which mostof the pools fill up, requiring cleaning out twice a year,is now aggravated by the fact that no funding hasbeen budgeted for.

Two years ago, council debated abandoning thepools to the inevitability of silting up. Public outcrystifled that thought and in a last-minute gasp before

Easter, the most popular pools were cleared. This waslargely through the largesse of local businessmanJames Tucker who did the job at a substantially dis-counted price of around R80 000, but it would costconsiderably more now, a year later.

Municipal Manager Xolani Luthuli told council andofficials that “when you propose a course of action, you need to quantify it and propose a source of fund-ing”.

‘People should stop buying petrol fromoverseas companies and only buy fromSasol. Then we will have more controlover the fuel price. Also, when it goes up,it’s usually with 50c, but it never goesdown that amount. I think people withbig cars should be taxed more becausethey can afford it. It will contribute toevening out the gap between the rich andthe poor.’

MIGUEL DOS SANTOS

‘The government is very clever as the pricemight come down on Wednesday, but itwill surely go up again — double. We can’tdo anything, we just have to go with it. Itdoesn’t help even to stress about it as wecan’t change anything.’
