AUGUST—HOLIDAYS—SUN AND SANGRIA?

August is the traditional month for annual holi-days for most people, though perhaps not for most members of the SLU3A. Having reached a ‘certain age’ most of us can choose to take our vacation when others are still slaving away over a hot desk, or whatever! Having recently travelled across country to visit some old friends recently returned from France after they had lived there for over twenty five years, I’m glad I am of ‘that certain age’: a trip scheduled to take two and half hours took four and a half going and over three coming back— take the A303 and A34 at your per-il. All Day Walking Group visit Horning and the Norfolk Broads

In June the All Day Walking Group held their thirteenth short walking break and twenty one members made their various ways to the Broads at Horning. Some of the Group hadn’t visited the area for many years and took the opportunity to arrive early and to spend an extra day looking around. On the first day we all met up in Horning and boarded the Southern Comfort paddle steamer for a trip on the river Bure along the Ranworth Dam and into Malthouse Broad with views over Ranworth Broad. After our river trip we walked out of Horning to Horning Church and across the fields to Upper Street and across Horning Marshes to-wards Neatishead. It was while on the marshes and walking alongside a deep dyke that Graham lost his footing and slipped into the dyke. With a combined effort Graham was recovered from the dyke, first aid was administered by Linda and a local resi-dent walking her dog organised transport back to Horn-ing. After a night’s rest it was a relief to us all when Gra-ham re-joined the group. In the evening we met for excel-lent food at the New Inn in Horning. Next day we all gath-ered at Ludham Bridge for a 9 mile walk. We started along the raised dyke to How Hill where the How Hill

Trust runs the Environmental Study Centre for the Nor-folk Broads in How Hill House. There are great views from the House across the river Ant to the wetlands beyond. After refreshments we continued our walk into Ludham for a picnic lunch and drinks in the King’s Arms, We continued our walk to Ludham Hall where we met our guide from the Friends’ of St. Benet’s Ab-bey who showed us around the Abbey site. Virtually nothing remains of the Abbey which was a Benedictine monastery established in AD 1020. It was the only monastery not dissolved by Henry VIII during the disso-lution of the monasteries in 1536-39. The Archbishop of Norwich is still the Abbot of St. Benet’s and con-

ducts a service there annually on the first Sunday in August. During the visit it started to rain! Of course, we completed the visit in the rain, before returning to our cars and to Horning. We met again in the evening for dinner at the New Inn. Seven members of the Group have been on all thirteen of these short walking breaks and after dinner Sylvia, Graham and Bruce reminded us of all the places we have visited since we started these holidays in June 2005 and talked of the great times we have had during the visits. Our last day took us to Acle. The walk was 5 miles via Acle, Fishley and Upton along the River Bu-re and Upton and Acle Dykes. We had an excellent lunch at the Bridge Inn before setting off for home. This is our last holiday as leaders. So, after thirteen years, thank you for all your support. Bruce is organising the short break in June 2017 and we know you will all support Bruce as you have supported us over the years. Finally, thank you for the vouchers for tea at the Farm Shop and Welton’s. We can’t wait to enjoy using them! Peter & Janet Ellement

Belleplates(handbells) Weds. pm

We are now on our summer break. We start again on 7th September and will then meet weekly at 2pm at St. Nicholas Church, Little Bowden, M.H. Barbara, to whom the bells belonged has given them to SLU3A for the cur-

rent group to use. We had a lovely afternoon tea at Totties Teashop in Lubenham to celebrate the hand-over and to give Barbara a cheque from our funds to thank her. She will use the money to help local chil-dren further their musical experiences. ST N Pam Duffin 01858 414975 Bird Watching (Monday) 3rd Mon. am

We are a local (within one hour’s drive of Market Harborough) birdwatching group who try to help each other improve our identification skills and which beginners are very welcome to join. For vari-ous reasons our second attempt to visit Sywell Coun-try Park last month was no more successful than our first and consequently our 2016 annual species list remains at 89. No group visit is planned for August but anyone interested in birdwatching might like to consider visiting the British Birdwatching Fair at Rut-land Water between 19th and 21st August. In addition to an extensive display of birdwatching equipment and holidays there is a programme of wildlife lec-tures and a chance to take a wildlife cruise with Si-mon King on the Rutland Belle. For details go to bird-fair.org.uk. For further information about the group, please call me on the number below.

Bird Watching (Thursday) 3rd Thurs. am

Amongst butterflies seen last month at Watermead Country Park were Large and Small Skippers, Red Admiral and Gatekeeper; dragon/damselflies includ-ed Banded Demoiselle, Four-spotted and Broad-bodied Chasers, Brown Hawkers and Emperors. Ooh, we also saw lots of birds! A red kite was being mobbed by not just a couple of crows/jackdaws but a whole flock of them. He soon moved on! The wild flower meadows, although past their best, were still a sight to see; whitethroats, in particular, were abun-

Local History 3rd Tues

On Tuesday 19 July, 43 members of the Local History Group came together, on what was arguably the hottest afternoon of the year, to hear a talk given on the Arts and Crafts movement in the East Midlands by Will Gilding (of Guildings Auctioneers). This illustrated

talk captured everyone's imagination as we were guided through the start of the movement around 1886 to the period between the two Wars. We learned a great deal about Ernest Gimson (a Leicester born and bred archi-tect) and saw examples of his work and learned of his friendship with William Morris (who originally founded the movement). We also saw examples of the work of Charles Rennie MackIntosh and enjoyed seeing exam-ples of the Art Nouveau movement. We also touched on the Art Deco movement which was popu-lar primarily on the Continent, particularly in France, between the 1920s and 1940s. It was a talk which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. We are now looking forward to our guided tour of the Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell in August. Play Reading (Modern) 3rd Tuesday pm

Last month we finished reading Noel Coward's 'Relative Values', an amusing satire of snobbery in all its guises. The play depicts a slice of social history and shows an aristocratic family grappling with the decline in domes-tic service, a growing clash of cultures, and the inevita-ble death of pedigree. The play was fun to read and we are giving Coward another bite go on Tuesday August 16 when we start reading 'Blithe Spirit', a farce in three acts. CC David Ginns 01536 505773

Walking—Evening A record turnout last month at Medbourne, which I credit entirely to Frank being the leader. This au-gurs well for the future as Frank has volunteered to organise the group next summer. So thanks Frank on both counts. The last walk this year is on Tues 16th from the Tollemache Arms in Harrington. Something less than four miles so I think we're safe starting at 7 o'clock as usual. The circumspect should pack a torch in their rucksack! O Bruce White 01858 467976

Wine Tasting 3rd Thurs The Piedmont is the source of some beautiful wines and provided three excellent examples for our July meeting including a delicious Gavi [La Toledana – Majestic - £11.99]. However it also provided a most disappointing Barola, which received this year’s lowest group score; so much for a famous name! We do not meet in August, and our next meeting on September 8th will feature more wines from North West Italy which you could expect to drink somewhere between Genoa and Rome. On Octo-ber 13th we travel further down the coast to Na-ples. O Michael Switzer 01858 555268
