NEXT MONTH’S MEETING JULY 10TH:
JANICE MOULDS ‘DIRTY AND SMELLY’
MONDAY JUNE 12th Dr SUSAN TEBBY
ROMAN MOSAICS IN LEICESTERSHIRE
SUMMER SUN AND 70 DEGREES F
Checking the temperature as I write these words, I find it is in the 70s and the sun is shining brightly. Farmers and gardeners complain about the lack of rain whilst the rest of us either simply enjoy the new found warmth or else hide away from it! I find getting some sun on my back improves my mood immensely, aching joints loosen up, whilst the wine goes down even more smoothly...time to open a good white chardonnay or sauvignon blanc, dream of eating oysters whilst at our French house...and come down to earth and continue editing the Newsletter. Last month saw the election of new committee members and the departure of some faithful serv-ants. Our thanks to those who gave of their time so willingly and a welcome to those who succeed them. I have no doubt that the new committee will continue to maintain the high standards to which members have become accustomed over the years. SLU3A events do not happen by magic or by some robotic effort—they depend on the work of the committee, the group organisers and other volun-teers. Speaking of which I note our monthly coffee service survives a little longer –but we need extra volunteers to help out if the service is to last out to the end of the year. Please help if you can. Mean-while your editor is going to retire to the patio, sit in the sun, read a book—and a little later enjoy a glass of something refreshing –white wine possi-bly? For tomorrow it may rain or be cooler...enjoy it whilst we can. The Editor

COFFEE SAVED—FOR A WHILE
Thanks to those who have come forward following last month’s warning notice, our monthly coffee service survives a little longer. But more volunteers are still needed. It only takes an hour or so, probably not more than once every two or three years, and provides a very welcome service which we are reluc-tant to lose. If you think you or your group can help please contact Enid Saunders (01858 432237 or al-ternatively you can e-mail [email protected]). Please do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE in order to ensure the continuation of this valuable offering which keeps us alive and alert at our monthly meetings!

Architecture 4th Tuesday pm
We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church. In May, Colin took us on an architectural tour of Liverpool. In our visit to Liverpool, City of Culture, we spent time exploring the river and dockyards, the cultural quarter, the Georgian quarter and there was time to reminisce on the Beatles! To many of us who haven’t visited Liver-pool for many years it was a wakeup call to make time for a visit. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 27 May when we will be visiting more towns with Alan Clifton-Taylor—on this occasion Lewes and Whitby. A full pro-gramme of our talks for 2017 is on the SLU3A website. New members are always very welcome. Please con-tact me if you are interested in joining the Group.

Aspects of History 4th Thurs pm
After entertaining us all with the first part of “The
British Empire: my part in its downfall!” in May, Robert
Cook will conclude his look back at East Africa in our
June meeting. We cover a wide range of topics so why
not come along on a regular or occasional basis? We
next meet at 2.30pm, 22 June at St Nicholas Church,
Little Bowden. For further information on this small,
friendly group, please contact:

Bird Watching (Thursday) 3rd Thurs. am
Two outings last month as only a handful could make our usual Thursday. The first was to Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Lackford Lakes reserve (between Mildenhall and
Bury if you're wondering) where the highlights were a cuckoo, kingfisher, yellow wagtail, nightingales singing (sadly not seen) and a few hobbies skimming low over one of the pools. We finished the day with a brief visit to Cavenham Heath to clock the stone curlew. For the second outing we went to Glapthorn Cow Pasture which despite the name is actually a wood! Highlight here were two spotted flycatchers. This month's outing is on the 15th. O Bruce and Pauline White 01858 467976
Book Club 3rd Frid. am We obtain our books from the Library and very much appreciate the service they provide. The range of books is eclectic while the quality is varia-ble. Occasionally we each buy a book recommended by one of our members. The books, whatever their merit, always give rise to lively (never/hardly ever heated) discussion. Here are two of our most recent books - The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch. One night, thirteen year old Miles is out on the salt flats near his home searching for shellfish when he finds a giant squid. This startling discovery sets off an un-foreseen chain of events that change Miles's view of himself and his perspective on life. The author portrays the local characters involved with pathos and humour. In this coming of age story the sea, the shore, the sky/weather are ever-present. Some of us loved this novel while others we not quite so enthusiastic. Pantheon, by Sam Bourne. 1940, Europe is ablaze and America is undecided about joining the war against Nazism. Oxford don, James Zennor, sets out to look for his wife and son who have disappeared. His search leads him to Yale and into the heart of the American establish-ment where he unearths one of the deadliest se-crets of a world at war. Most of us enjoyed this one.

Card Craft No.2 1st& 3rdThurs am
In May our subject matter seemed to centre on 'flight'. First, we enjoyed making cards portraying beautiful feathers made by ourselves from paper. Then in the next session great concentration was needed when we were shown how to make a box
shaped card with butterflies soaring from it. A lovely project! StN Vivian Hammond 01858434272 or Carolyn Youdan 01858 440620

Family History 3rd Thursday am
Interest in Genealogy, that is tracing a family tree has been heightened by TV shows such as Who Do You Think You Are? and Heir Hunters. In addition, on-line resources such as Ancestry and Find My Past make it easy for the amateur to research their fami-ly history. It’s a fascinating subject that can lead to discovering distant relatives in places like America or Australasia who themselves are discovering their family’s past; or finding skeletons in the closet that one’s own family had tried to cover up! We meet in the Evangelical Church where we have internet ac-cess using laptops to make on-line searches as well as to allow a speaker to make presentations. New enquiries Judi Derry 01536 760162 O Other enquiries Shaun Coles 01858 289543

German Conversation Fridays pm and German Improvers Tues pm
Would you like to be understood all over the world? A tall order, but researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics recorded informal conversations and analysed the tapes for words that sounded like 'Huh?', discovering that all languages contain a ver-sion of it with the same meaning. They describe it as a simple, minimal, quick-to-reproduce questioning sylla-ble, and a word we learn to say rather than a grunt we are born knowing how to make. Huh? However, we rarely use it in our German group conversations! CC Sylvia Mountford tel 01858 465561
German Improvers

For fur-ther information, including time and locations, please contact O Barbara Evans on 01858 463045 Italian Beginners Mondays pm At the moment our Italian teacher Linda is away on holiday so I have been taking the class for two weeks. It has been very simple and we have been concen-trating on plenty of revision and numbers, using our well honed bingo skills. We have managed to tick along showing we are a true "self help group ". O Sharon Webb on 01858 440851

Local History 3rd Tues On 16th May we had the pleasure of a very inter-esting and informative talk from the President and Secretary of Market Harborough's Rotary Associa-tion. We were taken back to the first meetings which were held in Chicago. At that time its member-ship was made up of local tradesmen and dignitaries, and the name came from the fact that meetings were held monthly in various members homes - going round each one in turn. We came to understand the work of the Association, both locally and worldwide, especially with reference to the eradication of po-lio. All being well it is on course to be eradicated worldwide within the next three years -an amazing achievement. All there went away knowing much

more about the Rotary and its charity works. And it is with great delight that I can announce that, upon my retirement at the end of this year, the Group will be organised by Ian Webb and Avril Pell. For further infor-mation please contact CC Jan Tilley 01858 461186

Music Appreciation (Tues.) 3rd Tues. am
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close, MH. at 10am. In May the programme of music was presented by Roger. We began with ‘L’Estro Armonico Concerto No. 10 in B minor’ by Vival-di(1678-1741). This was followed by the ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ by Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) and the ‘Hungarian Dances’ by Brahms(1833-1828). After coffee we listened to the ’Symphony No.7 in E major’ by Schubert(1797-1893) . Thanks Rog-er for a mix of glorious music, though I think we were all emotionally ‘wrung out’ after the 65 minutes of the Schubert symphony! Our next meeting is on Tuesday 20 June when Peter will present a programme based around the theme of Summer.
O Peter Ellement 01858 432966
Music Appreciation (Fri.) last Friday am
The theme for our May Meeting was 'Something Bor-rowed', music from composers who based their com-positions on one works by other composers. Starting with Britten's 'The young person's guide to the orches-
tra' based on a theme by Henry Purcell, we continued with Bach's Toccata and Fugue played on the organ cou-pled with a Symphonic Transcription of the work ar-ranged by Leopold Stokowski, the long time conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This was followed by a 'Fantasie Brilliant' based on Bizet's music for the opera Carmen by Francois Borne and arranged for flute and Orchestra by Giancarlo Chiaramello. To conclude the morning we listened to Brahms Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody On a Theme of Paganini. Our June Meeting will be on the 30th, as usual at 19 Westfield Close at 10.00a.m. We have a vacancy in the Group - please contact me if you are interested. O Geoff Moth 01858 432275

Quilty Pleasures is a thriving and enthusiastic group meeting at 2 - 4pm on the second and fourth Thursday of the month in beautiful Foxton village hall. Our aim is to help people new to patchwork, quilting and appliqué gain a basic knowledge of these lovely crafts, though if you are a more experienced stitcher there is a place for you too! We are now cracking on nicely with our current project, where we are concentrating on accuracy and, even though there has been some gnashing of teeth because a block isn't quite spot-on, the results are love-ly! We will be re-visiting English paper-piecing for a cou-ple of the blocks before we shift onto foundation piec-ing. We have also welcomed three new members to the group so far this year and really hope they get as much

Singing for Fun 2nd and 4th Fri. pm
People sometimes say to me: Oh, I cannot sing any more, I'm afraid I've lost my voice. In our group that does not matter in the slightest. The only thing that does matter is whether or not you actually enjoy sing-ing. If you do then this activity is for you. There are no voice tests, no questions like: Are you a soprano or a baritone? No rehearsals to attend for concerts or per-formances because we don't do any of that. We sing (all manner of songs) purely for our own fun, for the sheer pleasure it gives us all to hear others singing and to join in and give voice oneself to songs in a spirit of mutual enjoyment and conviviality. We meet twice a month (2nd and 4th Fridays) in the centrally located Methodist Church Coffee Lounge, a location which has its own car park at the back. Try us--we're a friendly lot! Wine Tasting 3rd Thurs
Pat brought four delicious Australian whites to our May meeting, to show that not all Aussie white wine is vanil-la tasting chardonnay with oak chippings added. Indeed the one Chardonnay which she brought would have matched a decent French Burgundy. However the group gave the highest score to a bottle of Clare valley Riesling bought from Majestic. Riesling is back in fash-ion again and it grows well in South Australia. Our next meeting will be our summer food and wine evening on 22nd June starting at 7.30 pm. Sylvia is coordinating

SINGLES EATING OUT AGAIN, CARD CRAFT, SLAVERY MORE CARD CRAFTING WITH LOVE
SLAVERY IN ENGLAND TODAY Gill Brown gave the Society Today group a very clear presentation of this often overlooked social crime. Trafficking is one of the major forms it takes: individuals trapped in UK or imported from the East and then imprisoned, sometimes in private houses or camps and exploited. It is slave labour with virtu-ally no pay and victims prevented from leaving their prison ---secrecy is all. Thirteen thousand or more victims in many parts of the country: no docu-ments, long hours of work, poor food, poor hy-giene, no social contact or private life. They risk sexual exploitation and physical assault – all this despite existing Acts of Parliament specifically passed to put an end to this slavery. Slaves are too frightened to report this abuse to the police. The numbers of victims are rising. Escapees are often caught again. Criminals, if caught, go to prison. MPs have, in some cases, spoken out against this appal-ling situation, being aware of the dreadful condi-tions and of the shackles of the debt which the vic-tims of debt cannot afford to pay back to the gang-masters.We must not forget the particular plight of children with no proper home and no schooling. Our group decided that the only hope for effective action to end this scandal would be our personal protest, speaking to other good people and to the police, the courts, local councils and to national bodies competent to take on the duty of cleaning up this wretched and shameful position. We then should support plans to provide accommodation, health care and education for the victims. A nation-al and practical campaign is really needed. T om Gilmore
On Sunday 28 May (the Bank Holiday weekend) eight members of Group 1 met for lunch at Har-borough Golf Club. After a slight hiccup at the be-ginning with a long wait to give our orders, every-thing afterwards went smoothly with excellent food and excellent conversation. It is always a bonus to enjoy the wonderful views over the golf course. This Lunch Group which meets on the 4th Sunday in each month. The Group member for Group 2 decided to arrange something different for Sunday 7th May. It was decided to have an after-noon tea instead of a lunch, so 9 members met up at The Greenhouse cafe at The Lang-tons. Unfortunately, the experiment wasn't a 100% successful and, whilst enjoying each other's compa-ny, the members were disappointed with the food provided. It was unanimously agreed, therefore, that June's meeting will revert back to the usual Sunday Lunch. We are all now waiting to see where this will be. This Group meets on the first Sunday in each month. It is full at present but if anyone would like further details and/or go on a waiting list please contact me. On Sunday 21 May, twelve mem-bers of Group 3 met at the Kilworth Springs Golf Club between North Kilworth and South Kil-worth. What a fabulous venue with extensive views over the golf course from the Attic Restaurant. We ate extremely well and were all very happy with what we had ordered from the extensive Sunday menu. When it came the food was beautifully presented and, at £9.50 for one course, was extremely good value for money. We also welcomed our new member to the Group, Roy Burdett, who immediately seemed very much at home with us. We are sad, though, to lose one of our original members, Anna McConachie but are so very happy to hear of her impending wedding. We all wish her much happiness in her new life. This Group, which meets every 3rd Sunday in each month . Jan Tilley
