Coffee, tea and biscuits at the Monthly Meeting Nothing to report this month, the biscuits have all gone, the tea bags have run out and the jar of instant coffee is almost empty, but there are one or two sugar lumps left. I have been thinking that when we start meeting again we could perhaps include hot chocolate on our menu, must see if we can cope with it and test the demand. Stay safe . Group Enabler I hope you're all enjoying the warm, sunny weather; it's certainly making the lockdown more bearable. Although restrictions are relaxing slightly, it looks like it will be a long time until our groups can get together as we used to. Several groups, including Poetry, Photography, Bridge and French have been meeting successfully via Zoom. We now have our own Zoom account which groups can use, so if you'd like to give it a go, please let me know. If you have a group member who is confident with IT it may be that they deal with the technicalities to allow the Group Leader to focus

on group activities. In addition, there is support available to help you get started; just send me an email or text and I can put you in touch with one of our members who is happy to help. We also have several groups using WhatsApp as this suits their needs better. Whatever way you choose to keep in touch, please continue to do so as we want everyone to continue to feel part of our organisation during these unusual times. Committee Items

Membership Secretary We are now fully into the season for the payment of the Annual Subscriptions, the renewal date for Subscriptions was the 01 May 2020.

Many thanks to all the members who have already paid, your support is very important in these unusual times enabling the South Leicestershire U3A to continue to operate, if only at the moment on an online basis and to be in position to fully reopen when we are all thankfully able to join together again.

Although, the majority of our Members have renewed their Membership, there are still unfortunately a number from whom payment is still outstanding or they have

not informed us that they are not renewing. For any member who has not paid, the offer of a reduced Membership Subscription next year will still apply, providing that they renew their membership before the expiry of the period of grace at the end of June. This will be subject to no adverse situations occurring such as the Government removing the Gift Aid facility from Charities and of course the agreement of the Membership at our AGM later this year.

However, as they have not yet renewed their membership, they cannot be classified as an active member and therefore will not be included in any activity or event organised by the SLU3A or the Group where they had been involved prior to 01 May.

In view of the current situation, which has necessitated the cancellation of the Monthly Meetings in the interim, it is now only possible to pay by cheque or cash by post to myself, at 11 Austins Close, Market Harborough, LE16 9BJ or by Debit or Credit card through the SLU3A website. Further details about this method of payment may be found in the Membership Section of the SLU3A Website. We are also very pleased to announce that this online facility has now been extended to include new applicants who wish to join the SLU3A. I am pleased to advise that it is the Committee’s intention to substantially reduce the Membership Fee from the next year's renewal. I hope that you are all keeping well and safe in these unusual circumstances.

Welcome to the fourth instalment of the Virtual Architecture Group As a change, I’d like to offer you a couple of sets of quiz questions. The first round is called London Landmarks. There are ten photos of well known landmarks, and for each one the number of letters in each word of the name is included. So for example, if the photo was of Westminster Abbey the clue would be 11,5.

10.Which of the following architects designed the iconic red telephone box?

• Sir George Gilbert Scott

• George Gilbert Scott Jnr

• Sir Giles Gilbert Scott

I hope you enjoy going through the questions. I’ll provide the answers in the next SLU3A newsletter, but if you can’t wait until then send me an email. Your feedback is welcome, and I’d appreciate any suggestions about how we can keep in touch with each other during the period of social isolation.

Art History Group members continue to keep in touch by email and phone. I have had many positive responses to my suggestions for TV programmes and websites. There is certainly a lot more on YouTube than I realised! Indeed the Royal Academy has recently put some ‘Exhibition on Screen’ films onto YouTube including Manet – Portraying Life (2013) and Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse (2016) which has something for artists and gardeners alike. There is still time to catch the Museums in Quarantine series on BBC iPlayer, see the May newsletter for details. At the moment, we don’t know when we will be able to meet again in person. Our planned programme was to have included looking at various British artists from the 1960s for the now postponed 60s project. I still have DVD requests with the U3A resources centre for a Barbara Hepworth documentary and also a film about David Hockney ‘At the Tate’. It would be great if we were able to view and discuss these before too long, but we must wait and see. Stay safe and healthy.

Belleplates No long distance or virtual ringing for us during lockdown but members have been on a steep learning curve to improve their techie skills and are now having regular chats via zoom. Not always totally straight forward but an interesting exercise and lots of fun. As soon as we are safely able, we plan to get together for Mary’s postponed 80th Birthday celebration tea, possibly at an outdoor venue, and we have Brenda’s 80th birthday on the horizon, another celebration to look forward to. But in the meantime, Tony continues to arrange music, ready for us to play when the ‘new normal’ allows.

Bird Watching Some first sighting dates from our members during May:-

Thursday 21st May would have been our bird watching day and chances are, for May, a whole day out at a reserve a bit further afield. That, of course, was out of the question so we decided to do a sort of RSPB type Big Garden Bird Watch. We weren't particularly bothered about numbers but the different species we saw or heard either in or from our gardens. Neither were we time constrained but could spend as little or as much time as we liked during the day. Ten of us took part in the day covering 8 gardens. In total we recorded 28 different species; only one bird was present in all of our gardens, the Woodpigeon No surprise that Blackbird, House Sparrow, Bluetit and Robin all featured well too.

Here's a complete rundown of how many gardens each species was recorded in :-

Same again next month? Who knows? Maybe we'll be able to 'socially distance' meet again. Fingers crossed!

Book Club I was advised by a neighbour to take my car out to stop it running out of battery after about five weeks of lockdown. When I got home I penned the following:

Bridge (Tuesday morning) Following my decision to suspend our Tuesday morning bridge sessions, the Harborough Community Church decided to close its doors anyway but promised to honour the period for which we had already paid when it is able to reopen. The question is when will that be and according to the UK government’s 3 stage plan for easing the lockdown, the answer is July at the earliest and then only if observing social distancing rules. The two metre rule would appear to make playing bridge impractical and I find the alternative of wearing face masks unappealing. However, as it appears we are going to have to learn to live with this virus for some time to come, if we are to resume playing on Tuesday mornings we are going to have to find a way to adapt to the ‘new normal’. Any thoughts or suggestions, anyone? John Cameron (tel. 01858 434155)e-mail: [email protected]

Crafting for charities Gardening seems to have taken priority at the moment during this period of late spring sunshine. However, regular updates are done by email and WhatsApp. This is a picture of a baby blanket and jacket for a prem baby made by one of our members. Helen Salisbury

Drawing and Painting The Drawing and Painting Group continues to be in contact via weekly email, with a new topic on which to focus our painting each fortnight. Currently, after working on Beyond the Barricades, we are coming up with ideas on the theme of nature, Where the Wild Things Are. The natural world has become ever more important in these strange times, though the current lack of rain poses rather a problem to nurturing new plant growth. Anne has suggested a quirky project for our next theme, and provided a starter picture, entitled Daft Cow! I think this will really appeal to the group, and will lift the spirits!

Elaine Scarlett and Sue Garman

Local History We continue in these uncertain times and, unfortunately, no decision can be made as to when we will resume our meetings. The visit to Abbey Pumping Station in September is still being reviewed and we will be in touch with all members once we are able to make a decision.

Music Appreciation 1 Music has been such a great help over the past weeks of lockdown – such a solace and such an inspiration. To be able to cut oneself off from the world for an hour or two and to be transported to who knows where? Wasn’t it Plato on music who wrote – “Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but never the less dazzling, passionate, and eternal form”? Well, apparently not (see: ianchadwick.com/blog/plato-music-and-misquotes/) but that doesn’t detract from the ideas behind the words. So what was there to enjoy? Continuing my trawl amongst the archives on BBC i-Player I found Virtuoso Violinists at the BBC. This was a programme introduced by Nicola Benedetti and included, amongst many, performances by Nathan Milstein, Mischa Elman, Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Sarah Chang, Itzhak Perlman and Nigel Kennedy. Next there was Classic Cellists at the BBC introduced by Julian Lloyd Webber with performances by Paul Tortelier, Jacqueline du Pre, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis, Mischa Maisky and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Sheku was the winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016 which brings us nicely to the 2020 Competition. The rounds for the winners of each of the Keyboard, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and Strings categories were contested before the Covid-19 lockdown. The winners of each of these five categories will playoff against each other in the Semi-final and the top three competitors will then compete in the Final. The dates for the Semi-final and Final have still to be confirmed. Unless the BBC extends their availability then by the time you receive the Newsletter you will not be able to watch the Keyboard category final on i-Player. However, the Woodwind category-final is available until 9 June, Brass until 16 June, Percussion until 23 June and Strings until 30 June. Please do make time to watch these incredibly talented young people. Happy listening! Peter Ellement 01858 432966 [email protected]

Music Appreciation 2 In these difficult times it it seems appropriate to reflect on a less complicated period in the past. I have been reviewing the programmes that the Group has listened to in the past and found the following which was in fact a selection of recordings made by the Group itself: SLU3A News July 2010: The programme for our June Meeting with one exception was from the 20th century, and started with a piece written and composed by the tympanist Colin Currie which was commissioned by Westminster Abbey and recorded there. Called "Borrowed Times" it surprised and delighted the Group. The sole contribution from the 18th Century was the last Movement of Mozart's 23rd piano Concerto. Sea interludes by Benjamin Britten brought us back into the last century and this was followed by Copland's "El Salon Mexico" and Danzon No 2 by the Mexican Composer Marquez played by the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. and Vaughan Williams "The Lark Ascending" reminded us of our beautiful summer weather . The morning ended with David Raskin's music for the 1950s film The Bad and the Beautiful reminding us of happy memories of stumbling out of the cinema into the bright summer sun so many years ago. Papercraft and more We are keeping in touch with each other via WhatsApp, making sure we are all safe and well. Plenty of funny items keep us amused and most of us are crafting at home. Even a pandemic can’t keep a good crafter down! We are making cards, doing beading, stamping, knitting and crochet for a start. We are hoping to start a Christmas project when we get back, if we get back by then. I am suggesting a theme for the members to get stuck into, so we can show each other photos, I hope all members will join in. The photos show an increasing lockdown family.

Another has been making face masks. The items have been donated through a member’s family contact in a Leicester hospital and a thank you letter received from the Trust. Janet Clarke

Quilty Pleasures Our small friendly group is keeping in contact via a WhatsApp group and sharing ideas and photos. We have embarked on a group project to make a quilt for Linus, an organisation that distributes quilts to traumatised babies, children and teenagers to bring comfort at difficult times. We are each making Cat blocks, which we will join together and quilt. The blocks are quite simple but effective and it is such a worthy cause. Hopefully we can meet up again before too long. Railway Exploration The group continues to flourish in its new-found guise of the Lockdown Railway Writers Guild! To date (22nd May) we have published 33 mini-articles within our e-group on subjects ranging from memories of childhood holiday train journeys to current exploration of a local disused railway tunnel. We are all looking forward to the time when we can meet again in person and hopefully welcome our new e-group members to a live meeting. But at present, the magic wonders of e-mail and the internet are keeping us going. It's all become very reminiscent of the wartime "we can do it" spirit as evoked in the poster. Philip Danks

Science Group Research into an Anti-Virus Mask Spring 2020

In the SLU3A Science Group some of the more irresponsible members have devoted their time under house arrest to come up with a ground breaking Anti-Virus Mask.

The first genre of masks considered were those worn by the Lone Ranger. Our research showed that it seemed to provide protection against revolver fire, knife attack and arrows but was of little value against a Covid-19 particle with a size range of >5-10 μm.

We then took into account the findings of the team at Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris, who found that smokers may be at less risk of contracting the virus. Our design enables the wearer to smoke a pipe so providing the nicotine which may be beneficial in avoiding CODIV-19 and includes a chimney to dispel the expelled smoke which proved to be problematical in the initial testing phase.

The mouth piece also allows for a triple quantity suction device to be inserted for drinking fluids. A study is underway to investigate the intracellular kinetics of a growing virus and consumption of a liquid made from fermented grapes. In trials the sight of the mask is so disturbing that there is no difficulty in maintaining social distancing. The production time of one mask is three days so based on production of 100 in each year, then so long as the population of the UK remains stable at 60,000,000, by June 1st 602020AD masks would be available for all.

Ukulele Group / Strictly Ukuleles The Ukulele Group continue to virtually meet up on Tuesday afternoons, and each week we have a fresh playlist of songs for us to perform. Each week, we have one or two new songs to tackle, and recent new favourites have been Any Dream Will Do (from ‘Joseph’), Gentle On My Mind (Glen Campbell), I Only Want To Be With You (Dusty), and Georgy Girl (The Seekers), which was written by Rothwell’s own Jim Dale. Additionally, members post videos of their performances on to WhatsApp, so it all helps to keep us engaged with the group and with our ukuleles. Have uke, be happy.

Walking Wednesdays Well I think we've walked to all the adjoining villages around Great Bowden and Market Harborough during the last few weeks, each walk anything from 6 to 9 mile long! Here's a few pictures I've taken en route. See if you can guess where they are? They are also on the Wednesday Half Day Walking page of our web site with some bonus pictures! I'll publish the answers on the web sometime on Monday 15th June. Bruce White

Walking - Half Day Third Thursday

Even though we're not able to meet as a group at present, it's good that we can now get out to enjoy all the countryside near home. These two photographs were taken on the 4.5 mile triangular walk from Medbourne to Blaston and Nevill Holt. Alastair & Christine Willis Tel 01858 419262

Virtual General Meeting On Monday June 8th we are having our first virtual General Meeting using the Zoom meeting software. Colin Cohen is presenting a talk that he has entitled ‘The Market Harborough Architecture Design Awards’ where he will present a number of buildings that the RIBA considers to be of great architectural merit. At the end we will have the opportunity to vote for the one we think is best (by text message) and during Colin’s talk we can send questions to him using the Zoom Chat function. At the end of his talk Colin will endeavour to answer as many of those questions as there is time for. We hope that many members will want to join us. Helen will be sending an email invitation with the details you will need to join the meeting. It is planned to include the recorded event on our YouTube account, which you will be able to access soon afterwards via the link on our website (don’t worry, it will only show the main speaker and the presentation—you will not be visible!). Future Meetings: We expect to be holding several more virtual monthly meetings as it will be quite a while before we can gather in the Jubilee Hall again. If you have any ideas for future talks: either a subject that you are willing to speak about yourself, or someone you know who might be able to give us a talk, please contact Helen on 07837 410575 or by email at [email protected].

Avoiding Identity Theft and online fraud: You can find some useful information on this subject

The Photography group’s pictures for the May meeting were inspired by lockdown. More can be found in our Activity Group section of the website.

National U3A has a great selection of things to interest us. Visit www.u3a.org.uk/learning and you will find a Diary Project, Maths Challenge, Creative writing completion as well as keeping fit, ideas for craft projects, photography and more.

If you are really into studying the Open University has a huge range of free courses. The history and arts list looks fascinating and courses range from one to thirty hours of study. You will need to register for these courses.

The National Theatre at Home gives you the opportunity to watch one of their productions. From 4th June it will be Shakespeare’s Coriolanus with Tom Hiddleston — not exactly the most cheerful play! But you will also find their quizzes which are presented by well known actors like Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter.

Lots of museums and art galleries have virtual tours on line. You can find a selection here. Also see Angela’s suggestions in the Art History article on page 5.

Using Zoom for group meetings. If you are a group leader you can arrange to use our Zoom package which doesn’t have the 40min limit of the free version. Contact Louise Elsome on [email protected] or 07740 572956 to book a time (you may have to be flexible about the day and time of your meeting). You can ask Denise Smith ([email protected], 07527 801778) if you would like some help getting going with the Zoom software.

Members will recall that on Wednesday 3 June it was to be U3A day and we were planning a combined event with Market Harborough U3A This was to be a 3.5 mile walk around the town. The event has now been postponed to early October. However, I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you and acknowledge all the volunteer work that many SLU3A members undertake; from making the tea within their groups, acting as group leaders to undertaking the role of Committee Trustee, to name but a few. It is your support that makes SLU3A the highly successful organisation that it is today and this year is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Helen Salisbury A thank you from National U3A to all volunteers:
