SIMBANG GABI

Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philippine Catholic tradition of celebrating a “novena”, a series of nine Advent evening masses from Dec. 15 through Dec. 23, leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in the early morning.)

The Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (Golden mass or Angel’s mass) practiced by the Latin Catholic Church. The tradition was introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the islands. In 1587, Friar Diego Soria petitioned Pope Sixtus V for permission to hold the said masses outdoors as the churches could not accommodate the crowds attending the religious services. The request was granted through a rescript, and in the 17th century, the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo - as the practice is variously referred to by the Catholic populace in the Philippines - became a permanent fixture in the Philippine Catholic religious traditions. Included in the rescript granted by the Pope was the permission to sing the Gloria and to use the white vestments in the celebration of the Simbang Gabi. This was to emphasize the joyful anticipation of the coming of the Savior. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi masses were held in the early hours of the morning - at 4:00 or 5:00 A.M., when the roosters crowed to announce the dawn of a new day, hence the name, Misa de Gallo. The timing was for a very special reason. The Filipino Catholic faithful consisted mostly of families with farmers and fishermen who began or ended their day at the crack of dawn. Farmers began working in their fields early to avoid the intense heat, while the fishermen who spent all night at sea came home early to sell their catch. The missionaries were able to sow the Gospel, cultivate Christian faith and build up the Catholic Church while integrating essential Filipino cultural values in the Catholic worship and life. So, at the first sound of dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. After mass, families and friends enjoyed the native delicacies available at the churchyard strengthening the social and spiritual ties among them. In the Simbang Gabi celebrations, the somber waiting at the beginning of Advent turns into an eager and joyful longing for the Savior on the final nine days of Advent. This is best expressed by the “Simbang Gabi Ritual” in the mass. Children in procession bring up an empty manger, a mantle, vigil candles and flowers. They process to the tune of an Advent song. This ritual symbolizes the heart of the Church, humbly trusting, openly and joyfully waiting for the promised Savior. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world. In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world.

17-C Ang Pasko ay Sumapit Christmas Has Come / Vino La Navidad Traditional

Mga Taludtod / Stanzas / Estrofas 1. Ang Pasko ay sumapit; tayo ay

mangagsiawit.

Christmas has come; let us joyfully sing beautiful hymns, for God is love. When Christ was born, three kings came to visit and offered Him special gifts.

New year is new life for the happiness of our community. Let us strive to attain prosperity.

(Koro)

Let us sing while the world is peaceful. The Day of the Child, heaven’s gift, has come. Let us love one another and follow the golden rule. From now on, not only at Christmas, let us always be generous to one another.

18 Payapang Daigdig Peaceful World F.P. de Leon

Peace is the goal of life. It is the grace of God for all mankind. The night is peaceful, everything is quiet, even the stars in the sky.

MGA AWITIN NG PASKO Christmas Carols / Cantos del Navidad

16 Simbang Gabi Traditional

The town and village folks visit the Simbang Gabi during Christmastime. The church bells peal, signaling the start of the mass.

(Koro)

When the mass ends, some go home. Others stay and eat rice cakes. Still others like “puto bumbong”. Simbang Gabi is like that in the towns and in the villages.

However, some teasers say, the time of Simbang Gabi is for walking down the street with one’s lover.

At the arrival of Simbang Gabi, there is a band on the street, musicians move around playing music joyously. In the churches, many people are gathered. Such it is in our town when there is Simbang Gabi. Such it is in our town when there is Simbang Gabi.

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being

with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us, men, and for our salvation He came down from heaven: (bow) by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

Ama sa pagka-Diyos, at sa pamamagitan Niya ay ginawa ang lahat. Dahil sa ating pawang mga tao at dahil sa ating kaligtasan, Siya ay nanaog mula sa kalangitan. (yuyuko) Nagkatawang-tao siya lalang ng Espiritu Santo kay Mariang Birhen at naging tao. Creo en un solo Señor, Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, nacido del Padre antes de todos los siglos: Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, engendrado, no creado, de la misma naturaleza del Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; que por nosotros, los hombres, y por nuestra salvación bajó del cielo. (se inclinan) y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María, la Virgen, y se hizo hombre;

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

3. O, come and lead us to glory;

O, help us walk the right way; With joyful hearts we bend our knees; The Savior comes to bless us. (Refrain)
