QUALITY TIME

MODERN MAN

German fashion company Hugo Boss is

famed the world over for its sharp tailoring

and the distinctly German ability to combine

functionality with fashion. For the latest

Boss menswear collection, the label has

taken inspiration from the music world. Hip

aspiration meets downtown cool this season,

with key pieces such as half-lined coats and

tumbled slim-ft jackets optimising the balance

between tailored and casual. Alongside

expertly cut suits and overcoats, casual and

sport-inspired pieces give the collection a

more contemporary edge, with Breton stripes,

leather varsity jackets and panelled sweatshirts

leading

the pack. rp

MAX OUT

At Milan Fashion Week, many spring/

summer 2015 collections drew inspiration from

the 1970s. This season, Max Mara revisited its

archives and found a muse: Anjelica Huston.

As a model in the 70s, Huston worked with

many great photographers, including Richard

Avedon and David Bailey. In fact, Bailey

once described Huston’s beauty as something

‘dipped in darkness’. It was clear to see her

infuence on this collection, as the procession

of statuesque models on the catwalk featured

long and lean silhouettes. In keeping with

Max Mara’s aesthetic, the colours were largely

neutral, a variation on the camel cashmere that

is its hallmark. Blouses were worn tucked into

midi skirts or else hidden beneath double-

breasted suit jackets. As for accessories, knee-

high boots and rain hats completed the look. th

It was the early 20th-century architectural movement that defned German style for decades, but Bauhaus is about far more than graphic design and boxy buildings; it has also become one of the most prolifc sources of inspiration in fashion.

Staatliches Bauhaus – or just Bauhaus – was one of Europe’s most prominent art

schools. Founded in Weimar in 1919 by German architect Walter Gropius, it saw some of the country’s most talented architects, graphic designers and artists pass through its doors. After moving from Weimar to Dessau and fnally Berlin, the school closed in 1933, but the infuence of the movement it helped to create is still in evidence today,

Bauhaus survive in modernist architecture,

the design principles of the movement are

Geometric prints have long been a fashion

staple, but recent years have seen them gain

Italian label Iceberg showcased Bauhaus-

inspired kinetic patterns and bold geometric

designs in a palette of punchy primary colours

throughout its menswear collection. Similarly,

Peter Pilotto’s autumn/winter 2014/15

womenswear collection featured strong angled

patterns and interconnected shapes in block

colours – strongly reminiscent of Bauhaus

construction – across form-ftting turtle-necked

sweaters and wide-legged trousers.

For spring/summer 2015, two German

to new heights, reinterpreting the shapes,

architectural structure and patterns of the

movement to create fuid, serene and strikingly

beautiful womenswear collections.

that many consider polar opposites: practical

wide-cut culottes worn with three-quarter-

length-sleeved cashmere jumpers over crisp

white cotton shirts led the way in functionality.

Femininity came from sweatshirts with blown-

out shoulders and ruched sleeves, matched

with wide-legged, straight-cut trousers, all

with razor-sharp pleats, creating a clash

between playful and grounded silhouettes that

echoes the interplay of straight lines and curves

seen in many Bauhaus masterpieces.

Even so, it’s not just the silhouettes used in

Jil Sander’s collection that are reminiscent of

the Bauhaus movement; the monochromatic

kinetic prints, which feature prominently

throughout the collection on sweatshirts,

derived from it. The collection’s muse was

for its spring/summer 2015 womenswear

collection. This season, Boss Woman’s ofering

consists of two-piece tailoring, pinafore

dresses and pencil skirts, all featuring abstract

geometric and angular prints. The inclusion

of boxy jackets, sheer panelled pleats and

shimmering fabrics catches the eye, but the

collection’s design focus is set squarely on

straight lines and right angles.

Stuttgart has recently welcomed two striking contemporary shopping malls, Sally McIlhone reports

SHOP | 37

In contrast to many German cities, the retail landscape of Stuttgart is relatively contained, with a handful of shopping streets grouped within easy walking distance of one another. The city’s pre-eminent shopping centre, Königsbau Passagen, has long dominated the city’s retail ofering but now two new malls

are ofering an alternative option, to make Stuttgart a compelling shopping destination.

Gerber in the south of the city boaststhree foors of shops and restaurants, bringing internationally popular high street labels including Urban Outftters and Superdry to the heart of the city. The Gerber centre

is visually striking, boasting an impressive

façade with vast windows that allow light to

food into the modern space. Inside, there is

a contemporary water feature and it’s worth

taking time to marvel at the mall’s design

fourishes, including a central glass roof and

supporting pillar surrounded by oversized

circles: these extra touches help Gerber to

stand out in the city’s shopping landscape.

According to Thomas Sänger, director of

centre management at Koprian IQ, the

company behind the development, Stuttgart

has highly attractive shopping streets but

most malls in the area are located outside

of the city. He explains that Gerber’s location

Milaneo plays host to flagship branches of Vero Moda, Zara and H&M as well as to the largest Mango store in Germany

in the heart of Stuttgart, the mix of retailers,

the architecture, its functionality and the

connection to the city centre mean that Gerber

will ‘surprise’ visitors.

Milaneo opened just a few weeks after

Gerber in the northern part of the city, close to

the main train station. It is now the largest mall

in the state of Baden-Württemberg, comprising

43,000 square metres of retail space. Milaneo

plays host to fagship branches of Vero Moda,

Zara and H&M as well as to the largest Mango

store in Germany. Alongside international

brands are German names including leather

goods specialist Liebeskind, and fashion and

homeware store Heimat-Liebe. There’s also

With a host of shopping options now available across Stuttgart, there has never been a better time to visit

a fan store for football team VfB Stuttgart.

‘For years, there has not been enough space

for the strong retailer demand on Stuttgart’s

main shopping street, Königstrasse,’ explains

Christian Stamerjohanns, head of public

relations at ECE Projektmanagement, which

developed the mall. ‘The fact that Milaneo

opened fully leased is proof of the high demand

for modern retail space.’ The centre also has

a number of food stores, such as Tegut, an

organic specialist, and restaurants including

the Hans Im Glück burger bar. A visit to

Milaneo is an experience: ‘People do not just

shop. Shopping centres are their favourite

meeting places, where they spend a lot of time

with friends,’ says Stamerjohanns.

Milaneo has been named the Best Future

Mega Project at MIPIM, an international

property development exhibition, proving its

status among shopping malls worldwide.

For both of these malls, the aim is not only

to bring new stores to two areas of the city but

also to build new neighbourhoods where they

are located. Milaneo, for example, is a retail

centre as well as a major development including

a hotel, ofces and hundreds of apartments, in

the new Europa quarter.

28: From Every Angle

Ruairidh

Pritchard

(Weimar)

(Dessau)

(Berlin’s Bauhaus-

Archiv/Museum für Gestaltung)

Peter Pilotto

Jil Sander

Passagen

Milaneo

Vero Moda, Zara

Milaneo
