Dear customers and friends of the Setra brand,

What actually sets the Setra brand apart? Is it the timeless design or the exclusiveness of the equip-ment? Is it the modern engine and safety technology? Or the proverbial coach competence, which manifests itself above all in the highest degree of comfort in all areas? See for yourself at IAA 2018. The focus this year is on the new S 531 DT. The comfortable double-decker coach perfectly combines all the above-mentioned properties that are typical of Setra. Added to this is its versatility: the S 531 DT looks outstanding both in the long-distance service and the coach version. With the Mercedes-Benz safety systems, Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4) with pedestrian detection and Sideguard Assist, as well as the standard LED headlights, the S 531 DT leads the way in terms of safety. Also when it comes to service, by the way, be it by analogue or now also digital means: with OMNIplus ON and OMNIplus Uptime, your Setra is ideally networked and always reliable on the road.

It is also worth taking a look at the other exhibition models, however: the S 516 HDH with an exclusive conference area and TopSky panoramic glass roof, the S 516 HD with optional even floor or the S 415 LE business very much belong to the Setra family. As you will see, at IAA 2018 the motto once again is: Setra – The Sign of Excellence!

T he Active Brake Assist (ABA) was introduced for buses and coaches in 2008. Now Daimler Buses is launching the next stage and, with ABA 4, offering a system for the first time that not only

initiates emergency braking in front of moving and standing obstacles, but also triggers partial braking until the vehicle comes to a standstill when pedestrians are crossing. ABA 4 will become standard in all Setra coaches from 2019.

The Sideguard Assist is also unique. It informs the driver when turning as soon as there is a relevant object in the zone monitored on the side. In a second step the driver is warned if there is a risk of a collision. The warnings are visible in the form of a flashing warning triangle on the wing mirror and an extra triangle on the dashboard, and can be felt through a vibration alarm in the driver’s seat.

Yours, Ulrich BastertHead of Marketing, Sales and Customer Services, Daimler Buses

S etra is the epitome of sophisticated travel comfort. The wide range of models in the ComfortClass and TopClass with lengths of 10.5 and 15 metres and two

heights leaves nothing to be desired. Equally impressive is the scope of possible customisation options. The varied range of seats comes from our own production and is unique on the market. Luxury details with genuine added value for customers, such as the heated window parapet, can only be found at Setra and further underline the exclusivity of the brand.

Exhibits at the IAA show off details of the Setra rangeThe exhibits at the IAA Commercial Vehicles also provide clear evidence of this assertion: be it the three-axle representative of the ComfortClass 500 launched in 2013, which typically embodies the Setra virtues with its stylish interior equipment. Or the super-high-deck model of the TopClass 500, which, with its TopSky panoramic roof, communicative club area and 42 luxurious Setra Voyage ambassador armchairs, represents the utmost that a coach with the traditional Kässbohrer K on the steering wheel can offer in terms of comfort. Various embellishments on the seats with leather piping, high-quality upholstery and height-adjustable headrests turn any journey into a pure relaxation trip. The latest fabric collections and equipment versions will be presented by the DesignStudio directly on the exhibition stand – luxury à la Setra is thus immediately given an individual face.

The S 531 DT is a star and all-rounder at the same timeAnd then there is the long-awaited star of the model range: the new S 531 DT double- decker. This will be shown at the IAA in a long-distance coach version, but is also equally as good on the road as a regular service coach with maximum capacity and the highest efficiency. According to tests in the trade press, a fully occupied double-decker still even achieves or undercuts the threshold of ten grams of CO2 per passenger kilometre – that is unbeatable. The design of the new king of the road is clearly reminiscent of the TopClass 500, yet masterfully presents its own highlights especially in the side profile. Particularly the continuous front windscreen with a shiny metallic decorative element emphasises the modern quality of the new coach and at the same time clearly sets it apart from its predecessor. At the rear, the designers have managed to effectively make the steep four-metre-high wall look slimmer. All these measures contribute towards the fact that exclusivity is not only visible, but also plays into the customer’s hands in terms of cost due to an improved drag coefficient. The new S 531 DT saves around seven per cent diesel compared to the previous model.

Because the double-decker coach is so versatile, Setra arranges the front staircase on the left or right in the direction of travel depending on its use. The podiums on the bottom deck can be completely removed to accommodate two wheelchair spaces. That makes the coach ideal for long-distance services. On the quiet and tasteful top deck, the TopSky glass roof lets in plenty of light if required and opens up the best views – a real feel-good zone. Operators can also choose between two cockpits for the first time, the elegantly functional “Comfort” cockpit or the “Comfort Plus” premium cockpit. Whichever cockpit is selected, its function is always perfect. The “Comfort” version offers a ticket dispenser option and is also optimised for long-distance services in its design.

New assistance systems turn every Setra into a safe cocoonThe new Active Brake Assist 4 and Sideguard Assist systems celebrated their world premiere last autumn together with the Setra S 531 DT. They are installed in the exhibition vehicle along with a number of other safety and assistance systems. For instance, besides the already classic assistance systems like ESP®, the highly impressive standard equipment also includes long-life and eye-friendly LED headlights and a fire extinguishing system in the engine compartment. A Setra provides a high degree of quality not only in terms of looks: its technology also ensures the ultimate reliability at all times.

The long-distance service version of the S 531 DT also available offers the light and friendly, easy-to-climb staircase directly behind the entrance on the right, if so desired. This provides added safety.

Behind the newly designed front of the double-decker with the top windscreen wiper in an aerodynamic race position is one of the most popular rows of seats in the coach world – it has also been enhanced with a new cockpit.

Communicative and cosy face-to-face seating areas on the bottom deck of the luxurious S 531 DT have long been part of the two-zone concept, where a sense of pure calm reigns on the top deck and the bottom deck is reserved for social gatherings.

An absolute highlight of the vehicle is the choice of two cockpits, which are either optimised for scheduled services or for the ultimate in comfort and luxury. In this respect, functionality and ergonomics are always the very best.

Efficient, safe, luxurious, innovative: the Setra coaches at the

IAA reflect the brand’s whole spectrum – from the low-entry

model to the top-class coach and the double-decker that is

formidable in every respect.

Setra TopClass S 531 DT

A double-decker is an all-rounder: depending on how it is arranged, the imposing Setra S 531 DT is a luxurious coach, a functional long-distance service bus or an individually equipped bistro bus. It even makes a good impression on cross-country services. The Setra on show in metallic velvet red welcomes its passengers with a refreshing breeze from the fragrance dispenser. It is made for long-distance travel, noticeable by the front staircase behind the driver’s seat, the lavish kitchen and the Setra Voyage Plus seats with comfort headrests. One double USB socket is fitted per double seat. The driver sits in the “Comfort Plus” cockpit. Systems like the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) or the Eco Driver Feedback (EDF) provide driver support. The new assistance systems, Active Brake Assist 4 and Sideguard Assist, celebrated their world premiere in the Setra S 531 DT, complemented by LED headlights and a fire-extinguishing system in the engine compartment.

Setra MultiClass S 415 LE business

Low-floor entry convenience at the front, high-level seating comfort at the rear, outstanding economy for operators – the LE business models in the Setra MultiClass are predestined for tenders. The barrier-free, soberly functional low-entry models can be supplied as two- and three-axle vehicles in three lengths from 12.3 to 14.6 metres and belong to the large MultiClass 400 family for cross-country services. The equipment in the S 415 LE business on show is accordingly aimed consistently at this purpose. Door two has a two-winged design and is equipped with a manual folding ramp. Opposite this, a special-use area is provided for wheelchairs and prams. The passengers sit on 45 Setra Transit cross-country style seats. At the same time, the optional integral mirrors and paintwork in metallic slate give the cross-country coach an air of chic – a genuine Setra.

Setra TopClass S 516 HDH

Those looking for something special will find it among the super- high-deckers in the Setra TopClass 500 range. The highest comfort, individual luxury and cutting-edge technology combine here to produce an outstanding travel experience. The three HDH models cover lengths from 12.5 to 14.2 metres, their individual equipment leaving nothing to be desired. On top is the TopSky panoramic glass roof, in the middle a luxurious passenger deck, underneath it the technical level with powerful engine, on-board kitchen, toilet and lavish luggage compartment – the exhibited Setra S 516 HDH in metallic wine red fulfils every travel dream. The passengers sit on 42 opulent Setra Voyage Ambassador armchairs, with the club area set out in the rear. Three monitors ensure information and entertainment, whilst USB and 230 V sockets provide power for devices brought on board. Among the numerous assistance systems, the new Sideguard Assist and Active Brake Assist 4 deserve particular attention.

Setra ComfortClass S 516 HD

These coaches are perfectly adapted to their tasks: 10.5 to 15 metres long, high-decker, mid-decker, different door lengths – the ComfortClass 500 fulfils all travel requirements. It simultaneously combines an extravagant appearance with maximum safety, high comfort level and outstanding economy. The S 516 HD exhibition vehicle is a 13.1-metre-long, three-axle model in “Copper Metallic”. With a level floor it shows off another optional refinement. Whether it is the 48 Setra Voyage Plus passenger seats in the orange colour “Zamira tangerine” or curtains in alternating grey and orange – the Setra is tastefully furnished. It is economic and functional at the same time thanks to its LED headlights, top engine specification (335 kW/456 bhp), the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) and the ambient lighting when reversing. The Active Brake Assist 4 and Sideguard Assist lift the safety to an unparalleled level.

Daimler Buses offers a lot more than buses – with a 360-degree perspective, the division is wholeheartedly committed to mobility. The driver is the self-founded “Innovation Lab Mobility Solutions”. We spoke to its new manager, Alexander Pöschl.

is characterised by openness and flat hierarchies. Part of the team operates in the ‘Mindspace’ co-work- ing office in Berlin, exchanging directly with the start-up scene.”

For the passenger target group specific to buses, Mobility Solutions, together with the moovel Group, has developed a kind of “operating system for urban mobility”, which advises about different mobility services, including booking and payment, using smartphone access. In Germany and the USA, 4.8 million customers are already using the various applications provided by the moovel Group.

With a modular, multimodal mobility platform, moovel enables cities and transport companies to integ-rate their different mobility services for each city. Using the mobility app as the interface between the cities and transport companies with the end customers, public transport tickets as well as other services can be booked and paid for. That helps cities and transport companies to make mobility more efficient, local transport more attractive and gives the end customer the ability to plan their mobility conveniently. We are delighted that moovel, due to its direct link to the bus world, will also have a presence on our exhibition stand.

T he department founded in 2016 has also dealt with the challenges of electromobility from the start. Alexander Pöschl says: “With the colleagues from eMobility Consulting and working closely with

sales, we support our customers when it comes to converting their fleet to e-mobility. To a certain extent this is a team sport, where we work out implementation scenarios from the vehicles through to servicing. It is about battery systems, charging infrastructure and route selection to name just a few key issues. Basically we carry out something like trans-formation support or change management with the corresponding tools like expert talks.”

“The idea of the Daimler Buses ‘Innovation Labs Mobility Solutions’ is and was to be able to tackle issues and ideas differently than in the normal operational environment. Mobility Solutions acts at the international level with colleagues from nearly all group divisions in a start-up culture, which

With OMNIplus ON, service turns digital. The new platform opens up new options for bus operators and drivers. All digital services provided by OMNIplus are thus visible and accessible for customers on a PC via a customised portal.

T he pre-departure check with notepad and pen, laboriously leaf ing through thick operating instructions, checking costs with a pocket calcu-

lator ... that was yesterday. Today there is OMNIplus ON – the online portal with which innovative digital services can be used easily and conveniently. The objective: to effectively optimise the vehicle availability of the fleet and thus the financial performance of bus and coach operators.

Ordering spare parts has now become even easier: the future OMNIplus eShop even knows the individual bus fleet.

W e have happily become used to it: online shops are open 24 hours a day. Searching, ordering, buying – everything works here simply by click-

ing. Ordering on the Internet has also established itself in the field of automotive spare parts, with the OMNIplus OnlineParts shop among the pioneers. In the coming year it will change to the OMNIplus eShop – which can do a lot of things even better.

Only when a bus is in service can it earn money. This is ensured by the revolutionary service, OMNIplus Uptime: it continuously checks all the essential technical systems of the bus and warns of problems in good time.

For this purpose, OMNIplus ON offers three service areas with different application benefits as the first stage.

With the first service area, OMNIplus ON advance, it is about the availability of the fleet, the keyword being OMNIplus Uptime. Here operators can precisely see the state of their vehicles and get fast support in the event of technical problems.

Behind OMNIplus ON monitor, the second area, are the telematics services for efficient fleet management. Whether it is fuel consumption or evaluating operating data regarding individual vehicles – fleet managers are in control of their buses here.

Finally, OMNIplus ON drive is particularly versatile and based on everyday practical driving – operators and drivers benefit equally from this service area. There is the daily

The new Web store of OMNIplus will offer the full range of parts and will be accessible via the OMNIplus ON portal. Through this it knows the individual fleet of the ordering party: the right parts have already been pre-selected. Making a mistake by mixing up the models or typing a wrong order number is therefore as good as ruled out. Users can also look up whether the required parts are in stock at their preferred service centre. Or they can have the order delivered straight to the company. If things are really urgent, then there is also a faster availability method for customers needing parts quickly, a digital overtaking lane so to speak. Incidentally: an employee no longer has to walk from the bus in the garage to the computer in the office with a notepad in hand – the OMNIplus eShop also works using smartphones and tablets.

T  he following happens in the best bus circles: during the journey, an error message appears on the bus’s central display together with the advice to seek a garage. Until now the driver or operator had to decide at their own risk whether to break

the journey or continue. With OMNIplus Uptime, all this changes: if a major problem is imminent based on the warning, the operator is contacted in minutes by the OMNIplus 24h SERVICE and informed about the actual fault. If need be, a suitable garage along the route is found, informed and the supply of parts checked. A vehicle failure is avoided, and ideally even an unscheduled stop.

OMNIplus Uptime networks the vehicle, service and operator. In addition, OMNIplus Uptime continuously checks the status of the vehicle systems in real time. This includes the technical system equipped with sensors, whose information can be accessed in the data bus system. All in all, OMNIplus Uptime monitors around 30 components and functions, including doors, engine management and exhaust gas treatment.

These figures are automatically transmitted to a server system via the Bus Data Centre, where they are analysed. If there is a need for maintenance or repairs, OMNIplus Uptime recommends visiting a garage early and transmits the corresponding information to the

preferred service centre. Based on the information, operators also gain much more trans-parency about minor maintenance measures and are able to complete these directly themselves.

If acute technical problems are imminent, which can lead to a breakdown, the bus oper- ator is called by the OMNIplus 24h SERVICE and also informed via the online customer portal of OMNIplus ON. Actual and qualified recommendations for action are already linked with this.

OMNIplus Uptime will be available from October 2018. The new service steps up at the IAA with an attractive introductory offer: when ordering a new vehicle, buyers will enjoy a considerable discount on the Premium service contract if they sign up to OMNIplus Uptime.

pre-departure check and its documentation. Sending information early about damage from the road so that the garage can prepare early. The operating instructions are in the Bus Guides, which means finding information quickly instead of a painstaking search. Last but not least, drivers can use the Remote Bus function to access all the key vehicle functions on the move – tyre pressure, diesel and AdBlue levels, lighting – one click on a smartphone suffices.

The functions available from OMNIplus ON are just the start – the services will be gradually extended. Next year the fourth service area, OMNIplus ON commerce, will follow. The OMNIplus eShop will then make ordering spare parts even simpler.

M any people are talking about digitisation, OMNIplus is practising it. The possibilities pro-vided by digital services from OMNIplus ON are

fascinating: from the pre-departure check and telematics data through to the operating instructions, you will find everything in a single online portal. I personally am particu- larly enthusiastic about OMNIplus Uptime: the bus itself reports early if a problem is looming. We will tell you in minutes what to do and give you professional support and advice. Breakdowns can be actively prevented in this way. The way it works reminds you of a fitness tracker for the bus, and the doctor comes with it. Furthermore, in the future OMNIplus eShop you will find parts for your buses and coaches even easier and quicker.

For us, these new digital services make an essential con- tribution to our core business, namely making it even more efficient and economic for our customers to operate their vehicles. Visit us at the IAA – we will be happy to demon- strate the benefits of digitisation in the service sector for your company, too, in a face-to-face meeting

Until now, trade shows have been an analogue experience with lots of exhibits and other means of communication, which the visitor had to walk around hall by hall. That is now a part of history on the Daimler Buses exhibition stand at the IAA Commercial Vehicles. Using an augmented reality application, visitors can find out comprehensively about the back- ground of the exhibits or the topics on show. And do so simply by smartphone.

The Daimler Experience app needed for this can be conveniently downloaded by scanning in a QR code or directly from the App Store. If the camera on the smartphone or tablet is pointed at a means of communication suitable for this, e.g. a brochure or a communication

wall, fitting multimedia content immediately appears. In this way the personal trade show experience can be considerably extended by images, films or even other multimedia content.

Those wanting to find out more about Daimler as a group and its brands can get an over-view beforehand with the digital brochure “Daimler Future Inside” – and thus witness the benefits of the “Experience app” live. For instance, a flight in a Volocopter over Dubai is just as possible as a trip in the semi-autonomous Mercedes-Benz Future Bus in Amster-dam. Hop on!

“Shaping the future of mobility with passion”

Interview with Till Oberwörder

Mr Oberwörder, what makes you particularly proud to be head of the Daimler Buses division?Hartmut Schick passed on to me a very good division, which I can lead into the future with pride and joy. The basis for this, above all, are our outstanding products in our portfolio, but also the strong focus of our service network on the customer and our international orientation. Not forgetting our first-class bus team, which would like to shape the future of mobility together with our customers with great passion. And precisely with this in mind, I would like to participate in developing bus mobility even further – whether it is in the analogue or in the increasingly digital sector.

Which new feature at IAA is of particular interest to you, and which customers have been waiting for the most in your opinion? It is no secret that one or two of them have been waiting for our fully electric city bus for some time. But instead of delivering rush jobs, we wanted to provide not just any, but the best electric bus currently on offer. The time has now come – we are eagerly awaiting the start of the first vehicles at our site in Mannheim just as much as our pilot customers. A particular highlight of the IAA, besides the Setra S 531 DT double-decker, will be the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 75. A generation of 20 models heralds itself with the minibus, which will score highly with the new safety systems and connectivity. And, of course, I see OMNIplus ON, our digital service platform, as a genuine asset for our customers.

What make the new eCitaro so unique? An important point with the eCitaro is that we are not simply presenting an electric bus, but are involved in the conception of an overall system in an advisory capacity – that includes giving advice beforehand through support from a comprehensive aftersales service. In addition, we have achieved significant savings in energy consumption with sophisticated technology in the heating and air conditioning area.

Why are you taking pole position again with the innovative Sideguard Assist and Preventive Brake Assist safety systems, which are now available for the first time for city buses? For us at Daimler, safety plays a key role and we invest a lot of money into this area. For this reason we would also like to provide the customer with fully developed safety technologies quickly. The issue of the turning assistant is currently being discussed widely across society and we want to make our contribution. Our stated objective here is to effectively prevent deaths and injuries from accidents when turning. As we are already using the systems in coaches, the step towards the city bus was just a small one. We are particularly proud of the pedestrian detection system here, which is tremendously important in the city.

What else can bus customers expect in terms of digital services? Is OMNIplus Uptime just the start of a major revolution? Not least through services like OMNIplus Uptime or the Remote Bus app for drivers will our vehicles become even more economic. We have already gained good experiences here in the truck sector and are now implementing these in the bus. Our digital services create the prerequisite for optimal service and the optimal plannable operation of buses. Even more can be expected here in future particularly in terms of predictive maintenance and remote control. With IAA 2018 we are successfully continuing the digital age in the bus sector!

Always there for youThe Daimler Buses team is happy to help you regarding all questions about exhibits and other topics present on the exhibition stand. Over and above this, competent contact persons on the topics of Mercedes-Benz buses, Setra, OMNIplus, BusStore, Mobility Solutions and financing questions will be at your disposal. Come and talk to us, we will be happy to help you.

Also at this IAA it is possible to pick your own individual vehicle on the stand and put it together directly on-site in line with your own requirements. Because, after all, you do not buy a Mercedes-Benz or a Setra off the shelf.

The cross-brand DesignStudio will be presented on an area of around 60 square metres, as Thomas Hassler, Head of Sales Design, explains. “With the help of three qualified advisers, two for the interior, the customer can try out everything here that can also be experienced personally in Mannheim or Neu-Ulm.” Besides “touch & feel” boards, which invite people to handle and experience the fabrics, and other material exhibits, the customer can then look at their vehicle design created on the 3D configurator on 70-inch screens and have it conveniently sent home to the computer.

Another issue, on which the experts will be happy to give advice, is the new ECE R118.02 regulation on fire prevention. This will be mandatory from 2020 onwards and will have major consequences especially on customised fabrics. “We will be on hand here with advice and valuable information,” promises Hassler.
