Celebrating the Sculptures of Bruce White The central Illinois area is rich with visual arts and especially sculptures of all shapes and sizes. Nine of those sculptures are spread across the area are by the renowned artist Bruce White. WTVP sits down with this legendary artist and discusses his life work in the arts. Friday, September 28th - Consider This with Yvonne Greer at 7:30 PM features Bruce White, whose work has been described as “an elegant union of ancient symbolism and contemporary science.” His preferred materials are stainless steel and aluminum, although he has created works in bronze and granite--essentially materials which lend themselves to permanence. In addition to sculptures for residential and commercial interiors, he has done numerous large scale exterior public works.
White has never been content to stay with one specific idiomatic concept. However, the viewer will note clear connections between his works when viewed in sequence. The artist does not usually begin with a specific idea in mind, but rather, relies on manipulation of paper or thin sheet metal to generate a “surprise” solution which can only be fully realized three dimen- sionally. He then pursues the idea on a larger scale. In recent projects he has been experimenting with tall columnar forms which gain their supporting strength through surface geometry rather than internal framing. In some, he takes advantage of the open interior by randomly piercing the surface and then installing electric light to radiate from the interior at night. During the day, sunlight is captured within and “bounces” around to make the sculpture shimmer from the sun’s movement as it reflects on the different angles.

Literary Programs that bring your favorite books and authors to life! The Great American Read Tuesdays, September 11 – October 23, 7 PM Examine the power, passion and joy of reading, gauged through the lens of America’s 100 best-loved novels chosen by the public. The multi-part series features reflections from everyday Americans, as well as figures in the entertainment, sports, news and literary worlds, culminating in the first national vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Novel.”
To complement The Great American Read, WTVP is scheduling content related to books and authors on the list of America’s 100 best-loved novels.
Mark Twain Tuesdays, August 28 – September 4, 7 PM View Ken Burns’s illuminating portrait of one of America’s greatest writers. In his time, Twain was considered the funniest man on Earth, but he was also an unflinching critic of human nature, using humor to attack hypocrisy, greed and racism. Keith David narrates.
Margaret Mitchell (AMERICAN MASTERS) Tuesday, September 11, 8 PM Discover the Pulitzer Prize-winning author behind Gone With the Wind, one of the world’s best-selling novels adapted into one of the most popular films of all time. No ordinary writer — or woman —Mitchell was a charismatic force who challenged the stifling Southern social order and struggled with the changing role of women and the liberation of African Americans.
Harper Lee (AMERICAN MASTERS) Tuesday, September 18, 8 PM Explore the mysterious life of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of To Kill a Mocking- bird. The documentary examines social changes the novel inspired, while interviewees reflect on the book’s power, influence and popularity.
Anne of Green Gables: Fire & Dew Sunday, September 23, 6:30 PM Anne Shirley heads to school in the city, and Matthew and Marilla face emptiness. Will Anne, overwhelmed by competition – especially from Gilbert Blythe – find that the dark cloud over her life does have a silver lining?

Medical Programming that will educate and entertain! The Mayo Clinic: Faith – Hope – Science Tuesday, September 25, 8 PM and Wednesday, September 26, 9 PM (repeat) Executive produced by Ken Burns, discover how one institution has met the changing demands of healthcare for 150 years—and what that can teach us about facing the challenges of patient care today.
When a deadly tornado tore through their small community in 1883, the Mayos took charge of recovery efforts, enlisting the help of the nearby Sisters of Saint Francis to care for patients. After- wards, Mother Alfred Moes, the leader of the convent, told Dr. Mayo she had a vision from God that instructed her to build a hospital, with him as its director. She believed it would become “world renowned for its medical arts.”
Featuring interviews with patients including John McCain and the Dalai Lama, the film tells the story of William Worrall Mayo, an English immigrant who began practicing medicine with his sons Will and Charlie in Rochester, Minnesota.

4 Sep. 8 & 9—New York State of Mind Take a bite out of the Big Apple’s eclectic culinary and cultural scene alongside two New York natives. Bare Feet host Mickela Malozzi kicks up her heels while discovering the dance and music traditions of Broadway, Harlem, the Bronx and the Lower East Side. Then, Real Food’s Mike Colameco meets the chefs behind the city’s most vibrant bars and restaurants, while enjoying their signature dishes.
4 Sep. 15 & 16—Pizza Party Why order in when you can recreate your favorite pie at home? Ditch delivery and join Create chefs as they put their flavorful spin on America’s favorite food. Ming Tsai shakes things up with a scallion pancake pizza topped with spicy chicken. Sara Moulton grills a tasty corn and asparagus pesto pizza. Pati Jinich shares her foolproof dough recipe, plus two Mexican-inspired pizzas. And Cook’s Country’s Bridget Lancaster makes a skillet pizza Margheri- ta in a cast-iron pan.
4 Sep. 22 & 23—In the Bag Attention, needle artists! This weekend, Create’s sewing experts cre- ate fashionable bags that will serve as the focal point of any ensem- ble. The pros of It’s Sew Easy, Knit and Crochet Now and Quilting Arts share their top tips, techniques and projects for stylish totes, trendy quilted bags, elegant evening bags and so much more!
4 Sep. 29 & 30—Autumn Meals This weekend, Create chefs celebrate the bounty of autumn with hearty, rustic meals featuring seasonal ingredients. Poldark, Season 4 (MASTERPIECE) Sunday, September 30 – November 18, 8 PM The rip-roaring TV drama called “swoon-worthy” by the Los Angeles Times returns for a fourth season of action-packed episodes, starring Aidan Turner as the roguish Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as his fiery partner, Demelza.
PBS remains the destination for Sunday night drama, offering the best in continuing series and single presentations.
The Miniaturist (MASTERPIECE) Sunday, September 9-23, 8 PM
In 1686, 18-year-old Nella Oortman (Anya Taylor-Joy, Split) arrives in Amsterdam to meet her wealthy merchant husband Johannes Brandt (Alex Hassell, Genius: Picasso), but is instead met by his sister Marin (Romola Garai, Churchill’s Secret). When Johannes appears, he presents her with a wedding gift: a cabinet that is a miniature replica of their home, to be furnished by an elusive Miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror what is happening within the house in unexpected ways and seem to be predicting and unravelling the future with unsettling precision.
The Durrells in Corfu, Season 3 (MASTERPIECE) Sunday, September 30 – November 18, 7 PM The series returns for a third season of eccentric family adventures on a Greek isle in the 1930s. Based on the memoirs of Gerald Durrell, it stars Keeley Hawes as wid- owed mother Louisa Durrell; Josh O’Connor as her eldest son, Lawrence, destined to become a famous novelist; Callum Woodhouse as the hapless sportsman, Leslie; Daisy Waterstone as the lovelorn teen, Margo; and Milo Parker as Gerald. The bohemian Durrells fit right in with the light-hearted Greeks—except when they disastrously don’t.
WTVP Passport Binge: The entire series will be released on 9/30/18, in tandem with the series premiere.
