The three leading candidates for Honolulu mayor joined us live on Insights on PBS Hawaii August 1. Honolulu’s rail project dominated the conver-sation with Charles Djou, Kirk Caldwell and Peter Carlisle, as moderator Daryl Hu worked to break the candidates out of their usual talking points.
The conversation with the three Honolulu mayoral candidates heated up online after the live televised broadcast. Watch a 10-minute web exclusive video, in which the candidates dis-cuss the Ethics Commission, on pbshawaii.org/insights.
OUR NEW LOOKThis month marks the launch of our new station look, featuring our refi ned logo, and the inclusion of the ‘okina, regarded as the 13th letter of the Hawaiian alphabet. Look out for our new look on our air and on pbshawaii.org, too!

The people of Hawai‘i bought us a $30 million new home. You provided us a forward-looking physical plant and the stability of property ownership.
And, of course, you now expect us to “bring it” with more and more quality content and higher and higher production values. That’s our expectation, too!
The last thing you want to see is reduced picture qual-ity on shows that you love.
Understood. And yet, you may have experienced intermittent pixelation (that’s when individual pixels in a digitized image stand out) and sporadic, brief audio disruptions, all since PBS Hawai‘i moved into our new home with major, new technology systems.
First, I want to apologize to you for the blemishes in your viewing experience. Second, I’d like to ex-plain. Third, I want you to know we have been working constantly, and repeatedly seeking help from network specialists, to eliminate the problems. And fourth, we have reason to believe that a solution is imminent.
As I write this, Level 3 Communications is arranging for a larger dedicated fi ber circuit to transport our con-tent. Level 3’s service to this local public television station repeatedly fell through the cracks following the telecom giant’s $5.7 billion acquisition of our previous provider, TW Telecom. We experienced critical delays as Level 3 worked to integrate TW Telecom into its fold and laid o sta . Level 3’s challenges in absorbing TW persisted as PBS Hawai‘i relocated to our new building and launched a long-planned transformation of our engineering model.
Our new model is something we’re excited about, because it allows us to spend less money to distribute our programming on today’s multiple media platforms – and frees up more resources for quality content. Our new sys-
tems rely upon dedicated access to an undersea, overland fi ber optic network that runs through a Joint Master Control Center, called Centralcast, in Syracuse, New York. We’re creating programming expressly for Hawai‘i while sharing
“back-o¢ ce” tech costs with our PBS nonprofi t peers. Using this data highway shouldn’t have presented
roadblocks in the Age of Fiber, but timing is everything: Our contracted fi ber provider, TW Telecom, found itself going through a wrenching ownership transition. We sense that the layo s may have resulted in a loss of institutional knowl-edge about projects already underway. For three months since our move to our new building, we experienced new owner Level 3’s lack of communication and responsiveness while our picture and audio quality su ered.
“This wasn’t managed properly. I don’t know why – we know how to do this. We’ll take care of it,” Level 3’s new Hawai‘i sales director Anthony Compiseno assured us when we met for the fi rst time on August 8. He told us that we’d been assigned an unsuitable network setting
– and arranged to test higher bandwidth capability (300 mb or megabits per second, versus 200 mb on our exist-ing pipe), with a “pseudowire” enhancement to protect our broadcasting content. By the time you read this, our picture quality may already have returned.
You and other viewers have gone through this trying time of intermittent broadcast disruptions with us.
PBS Hawai‘i sends you our gratitude and aloha, for your patience and your continued faith in our programming.
We’ll get there. Resilience is in our DNA.

Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media teacher Kevin Matsunaga calls it “the Olympics of broadcasting.” The annual Student Television Network Convention brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country for three days of high-perfor-mance, deadline-intensive competitions in digital media categories such as news stories, anchor presentations, short fi lms and public service announcements.
Kaycee Nakashima, a student of Matsunaga’s, says the competition is “stressful but fun. It’s an awesome experi-ence because it’s not every day someone can fl y o to the mainland and compete in a national convention and make videos and try to place.”
If you’ve never heard of the STN Convention, then you also haven’t heard that for the past few years, the Hawai‘i schools have been the ones to beat. Competing against stu-dents from states such as California, New York and Florida, Hawai‘i schools took home 34 awards at the 2016 STN Con-vention in Atlanta, Georgia, including 14 fi rst-place trophies.
It’s no coincidence that all of the Hawai‘i schools at the 2016 STN Convention also participate in PBS Hawai‘i’s HIKI NŌ statewide student news network.
“Hitting the HIKI NŌ standard really helps with hitting the STN standards, because with HIKI NŌ they expect you to put out your best,” Kaycee says. “You’re putting your best foot forward, and you’re doing all you can to make that video as great as you possibly can so it can place.”
Aloha Atlanta: HIKI NŌ at the 2016 Student Televi-sion Network Competition is a half-hour documentary that captures the STN experience of 15 HIKI NŌ schools through the eyes of the Chiefess Kamakahelei team from Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i.
We witness the insanity of schools scrambling to meet their editing deadlines. “In the last minutes, everyone’s screaming at each other,” says Chiefess seventh grader Taylor Nishimoto. “We’re all like, ‘Come on, we need to get this done.’ That’s when all of the nerves come out, and we’re all just exploding.”
We also experience the camaraderie between the Ha-wai‘i schools, the only state that sits together as a block at the awards ceremony and cheers whenever a Hawai‘i school wins an award. “If another school from Hawai‘i beats us, they’re still our family, and we still cheer them on,” says Taylor. “We are all from Hawai‘i,” says Chiefess eighth grader Kallen Wachi. “We are all as one team.”
“We travel to STN to compete, but that’s not the main reason we go,” says Matsunaga.

“It’s the many wonderful life’s lessons you can learn from this challenge,” says Kaycee. “You learn how to handle stress, you learn how to work with others and cooperate with them.”
“Getting along is really important,” says Chief-ess eighth grader Nicole Matsushige. “Later on in life, I’m gonna have to know how to work with my co-workers and other people.”
A wonderful life lesson, indeed.

This eight-part series reveals the humanity, the twists of fate and the surprising mistakes behind 16 of the most compelling and tumultuous presidential campaigns in modern history. From Howard Dean, to Sarah Palin, to Barack Obama, The Contenders highlights the innovations and intricate dynamics of victories and missteps that lead each candidate to either the White House or defeat.
“We tend to see scripted moments and strategic analysis so much that it’s easy to forget the candidates are people making choices and responding with hu-man emotions,” said series host Carlos Watson.
“I have no doubt viewers will come away from this series feeling like they have a deeper connec-tion to the democratic process playing out before our eyes this fall.”

With the stage set, lighting dimmed to mimic the rosy blush of sunset, and a waterfall trickling lightly in the background, Mailani Makainai is ready to take you on a musical journey.
Na Mele: Mailani is the fi rst Na Mele performed and recorded at PBS Hawai‘i’s new Harry and Jeanette Wein-berg Multimedia Studio. The lush greenery that blankets the studio is unmistakably reminiscent of Mailani’s be-loved home on the Windward side of O‘ahu.
Home, in fact, is at the heart of Mailani’s story and her music. Mailani was raised in a home where the tradition of Hawaiian music was deeply valued. Songs were shared around the dinner table, and Mailani’s father coaxed melodies from his ukulele to send his daughter o to sleep.
Her gifts as a vocalist, a musician and composer were nurtured by her family and in her community. Now, Mailani shares her talents with a global audi-ence, using music to uplift and deepen their connec-tions with the Hawaiian culture.
The fi ve songs showcased in Na Mele: Mailani speak to her range as a performer and storyteller. Many express her deep love for Windward O‘ahu, like “No Ko‘olau Ku‘u Aloha” and “Hamama I Ka ‘Iu,” which Mailani performs alongside three hula dancers. Together, song and dance paint an a ectionate portrait of the Hamama waterfall in Waihe‘e Valley.
Mailani gives an animated re-telling of the love story that inspired the song “Ka Wai Lehua ‘A‘ala Ka Honua” and is joined on stage by hula dancer Kau‘i Dalire. Part of a well-known hula dancing family and former Miss Aloha Hula, Kau‘i also has deep roots on Windward O‘ahu. She serves as both friend and business partner to Mailani and o ers her talent for songwriting in the song “Nani Ke Aloha,” which makes its debut in this program.
The warmth in Mailani’s voice is an invitation to let go and surrender to the music. “I’m gonna take you on a journey with me, and you’re gonna relax and you’re gonna be happy, and you’re gonna be thank-ful, and you’re gonna feel something from me,” she says. “I’m gonna make you feel it.”

The STR Group, a real estate company that specializes in luxury homes and relocation, is a new PBS Hawai‘i broadcast sponsor of Antiques Roadshow.
“Antiques Roadshow focuses on people and their stories,” states Sisi Takaki, Realtor & Director of Sales at The STR Group. “Every antique has a story associated with it that brings people together. One of our core values is to help people by fi nding a place where they can create new stories, or sell their place so that they can start new chapters. The other reason we love Antiques Roadshow is that it touches on the hu-man emotion of hope, and the joy when things work out.”
The team at The STR Group grew up on PBS KIDS programs. Now, their children are watching them, too.
“We believe from the early education shows, to the shows on art, to the informative news programs highlighting Hawai‘i and its people, we fi nd value in the responsible community-minded content,” Takaki said.
“It’s part of our legacy and who we are as people.”
Mahalo a nui loa to Sisi Takaki and The STR Group for their continued support of PBS Hawai‘i. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor on Hawai‘i’s only public television station, please contact PBS Hawai‘i’s Director of Business Support, Tina Yamaki, at [email protected] or call (808) 462-5048.
