About the UofC and NAPS 2008 The Energy Systems group at the University of Calgary is proud to host the NAPS 2008 in Calgary, Canada. Calgary – Heart of the New West™ is a great city to visit, live, work and play. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Calgary combines a thriving metropolis with Western roots and friendly small town hospitality. Learn more about Calgary’s rich history and discover Calgary’s advantage. Located in northwest Calgary, the University of Calgary campus occupies a beautiful, park-like setting covering more than 200 hectares, or an area larger than Calgary’s entire downtown. The U of C is home to scholars in 16 faculties (offering more than 80 academic programs) and 36 research institutes and centres. One of the most promising units at the U of C is the Schulich School of Engineering. The Schulich School of Engineering is building a reputation as one of the most progressive engineering schools in the country and the first choice for talented, creative and community-minded engineers.

Notice to the Presenters Paper presentations are scheduled for 15 minutes per paper, 13 minutes for presentation and two minutes for questions. A laptop and projector will be provided in each room. The authors are expected to bring their power point or PDF presentation (on a memory stick) and load it on the laptop before the start of the session.

Welcome to NAPS 2008 The Energy Systems group within the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is privileged to host to 40th North American Power Symposium. On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to NAPS 2008. The program highlights the role that power engineering plays in all aspects of our society. Authors from a large number of countries will be presenting papers on many topics related to power and energy engineering. The North American Power Symposium has achieved its worldwide reputation with contributions to the development of new theories and technologies in power system analysis, design, control and operation. We hope that this NAPS will provide good opportunities for attendees to share new contributions and information on practical applications. The roots of the conference are with the Midwest Power Symposium, which started in 1969, as a venue for students, academic researchers, and practicing engineers share ideas and experiences. NAPS continues a strong focus directed towards the development of students, who represent the future leaders of power engineering. Several of our industrial partners have supported this conference. We have also been fortunate in receiving funding from the IEEE Power & Energy Society, the Grainger Foundation, and from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support student participation – travel, accommodation and meals. We thank all our sponsors for making this symposium possible, the Schulich School of Engineering, the University of Calgary, the Grainger Foundation, the IEEE Power & Energy Society, ENMAX Power Corporation, ATCO Power, SEL, AESO, IPPSA, ALTALINK, and ENMAX. We welcome you to take an active part in the proceedings of the Symposium, make new friends and enjoy amenities offered by the University of Calgary and the city of Calgary.

With best wishes,
