Greetings Fellow Quilters!

Any quilter worth her salt knows the names of these quilt

blocks. They all represent something: Log Cabin and hearth, Rail

Fences protecting property and the Double Wedding Ring

promising a life together. They are the symbols of our quilt

world and when we see them we immediately understand the

story behind the quilt.

Did you know that in our country’s history from the 1880’s

to the 1940’s a similar culturally symbolic language existed along

the railroad lines? Our speaker this month will be telling us the

stories behind those symbols, the language of the hobo culture.

Debi Henninger has authored the book “Hobo

Quilts” inspired by her mother’s stories of her family feeding

hoboes and her love of quilting. She is bringing both of those

passions to our guild in September. Come hear about life on the

road and how symbols scratched on fence posts helped those

travelers survive.

President’s Message It was good to see so many members in attendance at

the August meeting. I hope everyone enjoyed Kristy

Daum’s presentation on Modern Quilting.

As a reminder, we have two “challenges” at the mo-

ment: (1) to make at least 60 “Do Not Touch” signs

and (2) the Quilt Show Challenge. Directions and

examples of both will be available at the September

meeting.

Thirty-two members have committed to make 45 of

the “Do Not Touch” signs; thank you for your help.

There is still plenty of opportunity for other members

to volunteer.

Briefly, the Quilt Show Challenge is to use at least

two shades of gray and one and only one bright

color, i.e. lime green, screechy yellow, hot pink, fluo-

rescent orange – you get the idea. You can use multi-

ple shades of the one bright color; fabrics may be sol-

ids, tonals, batiks. The only other requirement is

that the perimeter cannot be greater than 100 inches.

The display wall with examples will also be at the

September meeting. After that, I’ll have to take it

apart; I have a couple of retreats this fall and will

need it for them.

Separately in this newsletter at page 9 is the pro-

posed budget for 2012-2013. Please study the budget

and come to the September meeting prepared to dis-

cuss and vote.

Cindy Neville has been working on programming and

setting up dates for national speakers to come. A

2012-2013 program list is on page 8 of this newslet-

ter.

I’ve taken the opportunity this last month to attend

meetings of both Flower Valley Quilt Guild and

Hearts ‘n’ Hands Quilt Guild in O’Fallon, IL to hear a

national speaker. Flower Valley had Becky Wright

speak on Civil War Quilts and one in particular made

by a soldier recuperating from serious injury. Hearts

‘n’ Hands had Karen Combs speak on Transparency

in quilts, a technique whereby you can use an area

between two colors to look like one of them is on top

of other. If you have a chance you might want to

visit another guild and hear their speakers.

As I write this, it looks like we are getting a break in

the weather – cooler temperatures and a little bit of

rain. Enjoy! The way this year’s gone so far, we’re

probably in for more hot weather.

Keep quilting!

Susan

You’ve seen them in all sorts of ads - those fun-

codes. Download the app on your Smartphone, take a

picture of the code and then the code sends you direct-

ly to the advertisers website. Well, our guild now has

one! We will be putting the code on the flyers advertis-

ing the Quilt Expo. All those tech savvy quilters will

be able to go directly to our web-

DRAPES, DRAPES, AND MORE DRAPES

The guild has approximately 250 drapes that need to be “modified” before the next show. If you have helped put the drapes on the hanging PVC pipe at a show, you know how tight the hanging sleeves are. We plan to have the first of several drape sew-ins to correct the ‘tight sleeve’ problem on Saturday, Octo-ber 13th. We will need people to cut open the sleeves, sew up the slits in the sleeves, mark the new sleeve length, SERGE the new sleeve, fold and store the drapes. We hope to have 4 teams of workers for our first Saturday of work. No previous drapery experience required!

Date: Saturday, October 13th

Place: Atrium room, Concordia Lutheran Church

Time: 9 am - 3 pm

Needed: worker bees and SERGERS – the guild will provide the black thread.

If you can help on October 13th and/or have a SERGER you can lend us for the day please let Jeanette Oesterly know (314-968-8477 or [email protected]).

Fall Retreat…………..Sept. 21-23 Ladies as usual I will ask that you not show up before 3:00 PM. The center has other groups leaving and will need the noon to 3:00 p.m. hours to clean for us. Please remember to bring your winning name tags. Those who don't will remain name-less for the retreat and you don't want THAT to happen. I have an ironing board, but last year we had one other. Would someone please remem-ber to bring it (and let me know at the meeting or by a phone call...THANKS) I look forward to the retreat every year, but this being my 4th year, I would like to turn the reins over to someone else to enjoy. Think about it and let me know at the retreat. See you there.

Special Exhibit for 2013 Quilt Expo

Melissa Hanthorn volunteered to get a

special exhibit for our 2013 quilt show and

boy did she come through! Melissa contact-

ed the one and only Ricky Tims and Ricky

said he did have some quilts available that

we could display! In addition, Ricky said he

would pay the shipping costs on the quilts as

a way to say “Thank You” to the guild for

giving him his start with quilting. What a

great guy! Way to go Melissa!

Membership Report By Debbie Miles

Greetings, earthlings,

Whew! I’ve almost recovered from all the excitement at the meeting on August 10. Almost. It’s been a very long time since I was that flustered. When I went to the gym the next day, I just about wore a hole into the treadmill. (Ok, smarties, I hear the comments. But I have returned to gym membership and even the occasional attendance thereof. So there.)

Speaking of attendance, ahem: there were 102 members who signed in at the August meeting, 3 guests, and at least two members who were there but who didn’t sign in (one of whom is a frequent non-signer-inner. See, I’m not just a pretty face in the back. I sometimes even notice what’s going on.). A nice turn-out for the guest speaker!

Our membership as of this report is 160, down from 188 last year and over 200 the year before. The rough economy may account for a good bit of the decline, but if any of you has ideas about why mem-bership is down, or better yet, feedback from members who are not renewing, please pass such information along to Susan, any other officer, or even me.

Mary Ellen may have been on to something when she suggested we follow the example of the Sis-ters Quilt Show in Oregon and make a calendar for fundraising. After all, think of all the beautiful quilts we could pose behind! (It would be behind, right?) The singing group I was in before I became a member of the Missouri Women’s Chorus (ha! I got another plug in!) had the same idea, based on the movie Calendar Girls. I suggested that I be Ms. June and Ms. July; not only would I be the centerfold, but also it would take two pages to contain all my essential diva-ness. As a fundraiser for the guys in the guild, the movie inspiration could always be The Full Monty.

A WORD FROM THE WEB MISTRESS

The user name for the guild web site – www.thimbleandthreadstl.org – remains “thimble. The pass-word was changed to “rotary” at the beginning of the new membership year on July 1. The password is case sensitive, all lower case letters. Last year the board voted to change the password protocol to a univer-sal password as many members were not able to remember theirs. Because this is the only security for our web site, it must be changed every year as the membership changes. Please make a note of this new pass-word. As always, the password is only to be shared with other members in good standing. To do otherwise negates the entire purpose of the password. Please be reminded that it is your responsibility to keep your email address updated at the web site. Use the “Join the List” link at the lower right hand corner of the home page to enter your new email ad-

dress. Mary Ellen Adams

Gifts of Love Committee Has Chosen a Charity for the 2013 Quilt Expo!!!

As those of you who were around for the last T & T Quilt Expo know, the name of the Brown

Bag Raffle was changed to Gifts of Love. Notwithstanding the name change, the purpose remains the

same. At each show, a charity is chosen and the hand-made items (or other items as described in the

August newsletter) are raffled and the proceeds donated to a chosen charity. For this Quilt Expo, our

chosen charity will be Room At The Inn which is a temporary, emergency shelter for homeless women

and families, regardless of age or gender of the children. Room At The Inn serves about 200 people

each year including single mothers and their children, single women, two parent or single father fami-

lies. As we move closer to the show, more information will be shared about this wonderful charity and

we hope to have a representative come to a meeting and enlighten us on the full scope of their pro-

gram. Stay tuned!

2015 Raffle Quilt It is time to begin work on the 2015 Raffle Quilt. We would like to have to top completed in time to display at our 2013 Quilt Expo in March. Joan Tebeau and Russ Horne have kindly volunteered to head up this effort. The quilt is a pattern by Judith Niemeyer called Flowers for My Wedding Ring and involves paper piecing. Guild members will piece the quilt, Joan will assemble the blocks, and Russ will complete the appliqué portion. There will be a sew-in on Saturday, September 29th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM in the Atrium Room at the Church. Experience with paper piecing is necessary if you wish to help with this project. Joan will have all the fabric and the paper piecing foundations ready for us. She will give us instruction on the construction of the blocks.

The supplies you will need to bring are: Sewing machine in good working order – however, if

you machine is just too heavy to bring, Joan has several feather weights that she could bring. Just contact her if you are interested.

Scissors to cut paper Fabric scissors (optional) Small rotary cutter – 45 mm or 28 mm Small cutting mat Light grey or ecru thread Add-A-Quarter ruler (6 or 12 inch) if you have one Straight pins Seam ripper (hopefully it will be an unnecessary

tool!) Tweezers

If you are wish to help out or have any questions please contact Joan Tebeau at [email protected] or 314-351-9640. You can also talk to Joan at the September guild meeting.

From Your Program Chair…..

Hi Everyone. I am finally getting a handle on this. Thanks for you patience. I thought you might like a

preview of upcoming events!

September - Debi Henninger talks about the life and language of the hobo culture and

how she translates it into quilts. www.mybeststitch.com/

October - Round Robin Trivia Night. Lots of fun, lots of conversation, prizes and good times with a

twist. We will be traveling the tables in pairs if you wish, so connect with your partner and join us for

a laughter and learning fest.

November - Everything You ever Wanted to Know About Putting a Quilt in a Show. This evening

will be filled with demonstrations of preparing a quilt for a show: binding, labels, photography and my

nemesis—SLEEEVES.

December – Teajuana Mahone will be engaging us in December with her collections of quilts and the

stories behind them. http://teaquilts.com

January - Kit-a-Thon This month we will be setting up for the Charity Quilts due in 2014. No

sewing machines required! We will be cutting fabric and preparing to make kits for blocks/quilts. This

will not require any time outside the meeting except for collecting fabric to donate, so start now!

February - Virtual Studio Tour. Everyone likes to peak into a quilt studio! This month we will be

traveling by pictures to the studios of some of our very own members. Find out how they store fabric

and thread, set up a cutting stationor keep track of all of the ideas bouncing around in their heads.

March - Cool New Stuff from Houston. Not everyone gets to go to Houston and bring back the

latest and greatest to all of you. Pictures and hopefully some “live new items” to play with are on the

agenda and one of the best things about this giant quilt show is the vendors. I will be going this year

and will put on my “That is really neat!” hat.

June - Ami Simms. Ami Simms may best be known for founding The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Ini-

tiative (AAQI). She is also a very engaging and funny teacher. In June she will be joining us for a lec-

ture and workshop. Check out her wonderful website: http://www.amisimms.net

September – Mickey Depre. Combining traditional and art quilting in one quilt is Mickey’s forte’.

She will be joining us in September for a lecture and workshop filled with color and fresh ideas.

CHARITY QUILT PROJECT

It has been very gratifying to chair the charity quilt project. A special thanks to each and every member who

contributed fabric, blocks, quilting, and quilts. Oohing and aahing over the quilts as they are turned in is the

most fun! Be sure to be on hand at the September meeting as the quilts are presented to Angel’s Arms. You

won’t want to miss it.

Our next project is headed up by Nancy Hamilton. She brings new ideas and a fresh perspective with her. We

know you will be just as supportive of her as you have been of us. In January 2013 the guild will have its first

“cut-in” where we will cut fabric and prepare kits for the next set of charity quilts. Between now and then you

can prepare for this event by setting aside pieces of fabric and batting to donate for the event. January will be

here before you know it.
