As of the middle of August, 338 churches have signed on to the Austin-wide Explore God.

Explore God is a unique initiative designed to foster spiritual conversation throughout Austin. It’s unique because, though 338 churches have signed on, the conversations that will take place won’t be happening in the church building, they will be taking place at your workplace, at your school and in your neighborhood. The church’s part is just to provide the setup so that the conversations can take place.

In worship in September and October, my sermon series will follow the seven questions below. Here is what we are asking you to do.

Pray daily for the conversations that will take place because of Explore God Commit to BLESSing one or more people over the next year.

Invite someone to one of the Explore God groups meeting in your neighborhood. If you don’t know how to find a group, contact Pastor Ted Thulin ([email protected]).

SHPC is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for the Martinez family. Volunteers are needed on 9/7, 10/19 and 10/26.

2 Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church

MISSIONFor the Martinez family, homeownership has been

a shared dream since they came to the United States from Mexico almost 11 years ago with hopes of a better life.

“There wasn’t a chance to move up at home. We had limited opportunities and were restricted by economic class,” explained José. The eldest son Alan (19), who sleeps on a couch in the family’s small duplex, simply looks forward to finally having a real bed. His three siblings, Mayra (16), Isela (8), and Edga (1) will be happy to have a permanent place to live in a safe neighborhood. With the help of Habitat for Humanity and several Austin churches (including SHPC), the Martinez family will finally have a home of their own this fall.

Habitat for Humanity offers us the opportunity to come alongside

needy

families and live out Christ’s call to love and support our neighbors. While many charities allow us to give, laboring side-by-side with our brothers and sisters in Christ can help us develop those foundational relationships and create something with a lasting impact in our community, and in the life of a deserving family.

SHPC needs volunteers for construction on September 7th, October 19th and 26th. We will also be providing lunch for the work crew on the 19th. No construction skills are required, but you must be over 18 to volunteer. If you can help, contact ben.boehman@gmail.

com or look for sign-up sheets in the Narthex Sundays in September and October.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Kids Hope is gearing up again for the 2013/2014 school year. We are in the process of recruiting mentors and prayer partners to join the program with Williams Elementary this fall. If you have one hour a week to give to a child, please consider Kids Hope. If you are interested in learning more, check out the Kids Hope USA website at www.kidshopeusa.org or contact Lori Whitmire at [email protected] This year’s mentor training will be held Sept. 22nd from 1:30-4:30. Pre-registration is requested so we can plan accordingly.

In addition to mentors and prayer partners, the school has other opportunities for participation. Here are just some of the ways you can help out:

• School garden - need volunteers to help get it into shape - come as you can

• Adopt a teacher program - provide supplies based on a teacher’s wish list

• Office work - sign up to help out when their staff is out

• They are also collecting gently used bicycles to give as an attendance incentive to some of the kids.

Please also include Kids Hope in your prayers. It will make all the difference for the children, the school, and SHPC. Thanks!

The Living Waters for the World Mission Program (LWW) at SHPC sponsored three trips this summer to Guatemala. The June trip, which Pastor Mike Killeen wrote about in August’s newsletter, focused on the wonderful opportunity to form a new partnership with a congregation at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Palestina, Guatemala.

The July and August trips were all about renewing and strengthening our existing relationships with the Hogar Miguel Magone, the school at San Bartholome in San Andres Itzapa, and the church in Eden.

Work at the Hogar involved upgrading the water treatment system to insure adequate ozone disinfection during periods when the raw water supply was uncertain. At the school, our teachers enjoyed playing with the kids during a two day session of Vacation Bible School. These kids were so enthusiastic that everyone was left not only feeling great accomplishment, but also very worn-out!

Because of the school’s current financial difficulties, the water system has the potential to become an important microbusiness which provides clean water

to the school and the surrounding community, and it also provides an important source of future income as the water distribution network grows. To ensure the school’s capability to operate the system, we also worked with the system technicians to provide refresher training.

At the church in Eden, we taught another round of VBS and technician refresher training, and we helped the church put the finishing touches on a bathroom project that SHPC funded. Proper disposal of human waste is a major source of pollution in Guatemala, and one of the most common causes of water contamination and subsequent disease. We hope that

through the water treatment system and the bathroom project. the SHPC effort will have a significant impact on disease in the church and surrounding community.

Our work with these communities provides assistance with material needs, but perhaps the most imporant work we do fills spiritual needs. We have team sessions to explore how our experiences meet Jesus’s commands to reach out to the needy and we share worship and personal experiences with our partners. This strengthens our cultural understanding of how we are all God’s people.

If you would like to know more, please contact David Parmer, 512-294-3252.

We had a fantastic week with our IHN guests August 11th through the 18th. Our guests included four families with a total of 6 kids, ages 9 months to 13 years-old, so our

William Cannon campus was a lively place! Our volunteers enjoyed sharing meals with families, playing with babies in the Narthex, and

shooting hoops with older kids in the parking lot. It was, as always, a wonderful experience. To learn more about IHN and Foundation For the Homeless, visit their websites. http://www.

PRIME TIMEVisit the UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDENS with the Prime Timers on Oct.8th

One of the best kept secrets in Austin is the UMLAUF SCULPTURE GARDEN & MUSEUM. Charles Umlauf studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, moved to Austin in 1941, and taught art and sculpture at U.T. for 40 years. His work can be seen at the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Walk through the beautiful xeriscaped garden which contains many of his sculptures or just sit on a bench and contemplate the beauty around you. A video and talk on Umlauf and his garden will be shown before the tour. We will lunch afterwards at one of the renowned restaurants on Barton Springs Road, adjacent to the gardens. For more information contact Mary MacAllister at 512-288-6362 or [email protected].

SHPC Men’s Book ClubThe initial meeting of the SHPC Men’s Book Club will

be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 in Room 9 on the William Cannon Campus. Thereafter, we will meet on the first Thursday of each month, October through May.

The purpose of the club is to provide an opportunity for the men of SHPC to meet monthly to discuss non-fiction books that focus on religion and American life. Books about religion in America, Christian responses to contemporary social and political issues, or other topics deemed appropriate and interesting to the

group’s members will provide the focus for the group’s discussions. The club will meet several SHPC goals—primarily growth and connection.

At the initial meeting, we will adopt a book for the October meeting and discuss the organization of the club. I hope that you will consider attending this meeting, bring suggestions for books to discuss, and become an active member of the group.

For more information or questions, contact Stefan Haag by phone (512-288-3479) or email ([email protected]).

3rd GRADERS RECEIVE BIBLES: SEPTEMBER 29th

One of our favorite traditions at SHPC is presenting a Bible to all 3rd grade students. These Bibles are gifts from you – the congregation – and this is a very special moment in both the lives of our students and the life of our church. We will distribute Bibles to all SHPC 3rd graders on Sunday, September 29th, at the following services: William Cannon campus – 9:30; Brodie campus – 11:00. Please join us afterwards to sign these Bibles and congratulate our kiddos on this special day!

CHILDREN at the LORD’S TABLEAll children in 2nd – 4th grades who would like to learn about the sacraments of Baptism and Communion are

invited to attend these three educational and interactive sessions. Participants will receive First Communion and be recognized during World Communion Sunday on October 6th during the 11:00 services at both campuses.

Want to sign your child up for the class or learn more about Children at the Lord’s Table? Contact Pastor Britta: [email protected] or 892-3580 x107.

Preschool NewsWow, it’s hard to believe that we are gearing up for

preschool to begin already! SHPC Preschool is celebrating its 27th year of operation

this year. We have grown to accommodate 60+ students and employ 17 staff members. The preschool year will start off with a fun Open House & Picnic in early September, and our first day of school is Wednesday, September 4th. During our first curriculum unit, Back To School, the students will hear stories that help with transitions into school like The Kissing Hand and Llama Llama Misses Mama. While there are sure to be a few tears, all students and parents adapt very quickly to the new routines. The staff are blessed and honored to be entrusted with the care of so many wonderful students. We look forward to meeting our new friends!
