A Disciple Worships

In June we move to a summerschedule on Sunday mornings.

This means that elementary stu-dents will not have their regularUpstreet program and that they areencouraged to join their parents inworship.

We do this for two reasons. Thefirst is vision. Our goal is to

give kids the ability to walk intoadulthood with all the resourcesneeded to build a healthy and vi-brant spiritual life. We believe thatone of the core practices of follow-ing Christ is being a person whoworships. As with the other corepractices, worship is both taughtand caught. For this reason we usethe summer schedule as a timewhere our elementary-age kids canbe mentored by their parents asthey worship together. They get tosee us sing, pray, study and give toGod. They catch the Spirit of whatwe do when we come together inChrist's name. They are also taughtthe form and structure of publicworship. The worship team workstogether to make sure that eachweek there is a worship "lesson"that instructs about some part ofthe worship experience.

The practice of worshipping to-gether will be a building block

as you prepare them for a life withChrist. If you have children orgrandchildren we hope you will takeadvantage of the summer of wor-ship to begin adding that buildingblock. Below you will find a fewsuggestions for helping your kids getthe most out of worship. See youSunday!

Suggestionsfor summerSundays with students● Sit together as a family, espe-

cially when the children areyoung. This gives you the abilityto interpret things they may notunderstand.

● Encourage your children tostand and sit with the congrega-tion. Not only do they need toparticipate in the worship experi-ence, but they need the physicalmovement in order to sit for thequiet parts.

● Involve the children in musicexperiences. Make sure they cansee the screens or help them toread the hymnal. Encourage thento learn the songs. You might

sing the songs in the car or athome to help the childrenbecome familiar with thesongs.

● Help your children to knowhow they can best join inprayer. Before worship, dis-cuss concerns or thanks forevents or people in the chil-dren's lives or your familylife. Help them to join in theprayer of confession and dur-ing the silent prayer.

● Help your children to findthe Scripture passages intheir own Bibles. Youngreaders will especially beeager to find the passages intheir Bibles. Use colorfulBible markers to mark theverse ahead of time.

● Explain the offering to yourchildren. Let them partici-pate by putting an offering inthe plate. Emphasize that itis a way we show love toGod. Help them to knowwhere the money goes onceit goes in the offering plate.

● Use the children's note-books found in the narthex. You might bring interestingpaper, special pencils ormarkers. (pipe cleaners area good quiet item) Childrenoften multitask, listeningwhile they are occupied withan unrelated activity.Change the contents of thebag fairly often.

● Help them to listen for cer-tain words, Bible names andplaces, and other simpleconcepts. Younger childrencan draw picture of thingsthey observe. Older childrencan keep simple notes.

● Discuss the service on theway home or after you ar-rive home, answering ques-tions they may have aboutthe experiences. Ask themwhat they enjoyed most.Share appropriate thoughtsor feelings that you may havehad.

The 25th year of SHPCPreschool may be winding down but the students andthe staff sure haven’t! May has been a fun-filledmonth. During our Spring Olympics, the childrencompeted with each other in events such as t-ball,basketball, boxing and even swimming! And itwouldn’t be the Olympics without medals! Students

each earned an“Olympic” medalstating which eventthey did best in.Mother's Day soonfollowed with the annual Mother's Day Tea hosted by the chil-dren in the FMC. Since Father's Day is in June (when we’renot in school), the children honored Dads early at the annualDoughnuts with Dads, a day filled with superheroes and su-perhero costumes. Have a great summer! See you in Septem-ber!

Mixing Colors: WhyORANGE works forSHPC

I'd like you to think back tothat first time you played

with water colors or fingerpaints. You may have startedwith one color on the brush oron your fingers. Eventually, yougot braver and began mixingcolors. Think about your favor-ites within the color palette. Was ORANGE in your list of fa-vorites? ORANGE is a secondarycolor, created when you com-bine two primary colors — redand yellow — two pigmentsmerging to create somethingeven more powerful. ORANGE iswhat red and yellow can dowhen they combine efforts. While red has a million shadesand attributes, if you paint onlywith red, you will get what onlyred can do. The same holdstrue for yellow. If you paintonly with yellow, you will getonly what yellow can do. Butwhen you paint with red andyellow, you'll get new possibili-ties, fresh solutions, vibrantoutcomes.

In regards to our cradle-to-col-lege ministry here at SHPC,

ORANGE has a special signifi-cance. It is the color we use toexplain our strategy of connect-ing the church and the home.We believe that when you com-bine the unconditional love ofthe family (represented by theheart & the color RED) workingin conjunction with the Church(represented by the Light ofChrist & the color YELLOW) youcreate an amazing outcome onthe hearts of the next genera-tion. We believe that the homeand the church working togeth-

er have a greater impact thanthese two entities working sep-arately. In ORANGE math, itworks out as 2 > 1+1.

ORANGE is biblically-based.The foundational scripture

for this strategy is Deuterono-my 6:4-9, also known as theShema. This is where Mosesspeaks to the Israelites abouttheir relationship with God asHis children and the need forthem to make it a priority intheir lives.

It says: "Hear, O Israel: TheLORD our God, the LORD is one.Love the LORD your God withall your heart and with all yoursoul and with all your strength. These commandments that Igive you today are to be onyour hearts. Impress them onyour children. Talk about themwhen you sit at home and whenyou walk along the road, whenyou lie down and when you getup. Tie them as symbols onyour hands and bind them onyour foreheads. Write them onthe doorframes of your housesand on your gates."

I love how Moses includes theteaching of the next genera-

tion in this passage. He says,"Impress [these command-ments] on your children." I'dlike to think when he says"your," he's not just speaking toparents. I believe he is tellingthe COMMUNITY that they areresponsible for their children. He gives them plenty of exam-ples to remember this cove-nant, including that lastline…"Write them on the door-frames of your houses and onyour gates." Imagine what thatmight look like if we did that inour own neighborhoods today. Not only does this provide ev-

eryone with reminders at everyturn, but it says to the visitor ornewcomer, "WE ARE PEOPLE OFTHE ONE TRUE GOD! WE LOVELIKE HE DOES; WE WELCOMELIKE HE DOES; WE ARE A PARTOF HIS BIG STORY! THIS IS OURIDENTITY!"

What a powerful state-ment of COMMUNITY.

In our Sunday morning pro-gramming, we have approxi-

mately one hour a week tospend with children. Takinginto consideration holidays andsick days, the church hasaround 40 hours to speak into achild's life. That's approximate-ly one work week to teach chil-dren everything we can aboutGod! Parents, on the otherhand, average 3000 hours ayear with their child. Uniquetimes, that the church simplydoesn't have, such as bedtimes, travel times, mealtimes, andmornings. With this in mind, Ithink we can agree that whathappens at home is more im-portant than what happens atchurch. However, if we as achurch community combine ef-forts with parents — who, ac-cording to scripture, are theprimary spiritual leaders intheir children's lives — amazingthings can happen! This is whywe feel it is so important thatwe as a congregation under-stand and engage in this OR-ANGE strategy. ORANGE is truly

for all of us: all of us who makebaptismal vows and commit toraising up our sons and daugh-ters to help them understandtheir roles in God's big story.

I'd like to extend a challengeto all of you… to all of us as a

congregation. What if, everytime you saw the color ORANGE(and in the city of Austin, OR-ANGE is all around us!) What ifyou thought about the changesthat need to happen to reachthe next generation of believ-ers? What if the blending ofred and yellow always remindsyou of the importance of part-nering with each other as aCOMMUNITY? What if whenev-er you came across somethingORANGE you thought about theopportunities we have as achurch community to help oth-ers discover who they are aschildren of God?

Back in April, wehad the greatpleasure of in-cluding anothergroup of gradu-ates of Childrenat the Lord’s Table, our work-shop on the sacraments. Weasked one of the class membersabout the experience, and Jaketold us:

“I learned about the two Sacra-ments and what Communion is.Communion is the bread andwine that represents Jesus'flesh and blood and how muchGod loves us. My favorite partof the day was going into thesanctuary with my family.”

Sounds like Jake’s ready forsummer!

On Sunday, April 22nd a group ofSHPC volunteers gathered inthe FMC after service to getready for a Sunday of Service. We ate a quick lunch and thendeparted to different areas ofthe city to join two of our mis-sion partners, Manos de Cristoand the Austin Street YouthMinistry, for a few hours ofmission work and relation-ship building. At Manos deCristo, the mission was sim-ple: use some old-fashionedelbow grease to spruce upthe facility a little. A few ofus started off by cleaningthe windows around thefacility while otherschanged out air filters inthe main building (and theywere very much in need ofchanging!). After the windows,Jonathan Slaughter demonstrat-ed impressive hedge sculptingskills while Amy Slaughter beau-tified a small garden at the fa-cility and a house next door. It'samazing what a little mulch, daisies, and some TLC can do.For the last task at Manos, wetackled an alley full of weedsbehind the building. As some ofthe weeds were taller than oursmallest volunteer, we had ourwork cut out for us! JeremyBridges was fascinated by the

size of one particular weed thatwas at least six feet tall, and itended up coming home with us.(!) After the giant weeds werefelled, our day was done. Thestaff at Manos was very appre-ciative, and as we departed, they waved good-bye throughsparkling clean windows.

The other group headed out toa laundromat at 24th and Gua-dalupe to meet up with TerryCole of the Austin Street YouthMinistry for a "Wash Day". Wash

Day with the ASYM consists ofvolunteers providing lunch andlaundry supplies to some of thestreet youth that stay in thatpart of town. While the clothesarewashed, youth and volun-teers sit and chat about any-thing and everything overdelicious sub sandwiches. ASYM

is one of our newer mis-sion partners and we wereexcited to hang out withthem for the afternoon. The objective of this ser-vice project was mostlyrelationship-building. Suz-ie Bridges headed up thisportion of the Sunday ofService, and she and Tam-my Boehman mentionedhow the youth were soeager to just sit down and

have someone to converse with.Christopher Bridges, 11, thor-oughly enjoyed participating. Itwas a bit of an eye-opening ex-perience for him, and he alsogot to see one of the youth dosome cool magic tricks. AmayaBoehman, 4, enjoyed drawingand coloring with some of theyouth. At the end of this proj-ect, clothes were washed, bel-lies were full, and newrelationships were started. Thiswas truly a delightful experi-ence.

MALAWI UPDATEHuge thanks you to everyonewho helped in the effort tocreate an amazing visit for ourBrother Pastor Kenneth andSister Ronica who came to visitus all the way from Malawi, Af-rica.

They saw and did so much withus in their short time in Texas. They rode horses, dined atsome of south Austin’s best eat-

After meeting with the MissionCommittee, our partnershipwas again renewed. We have

committed funds to purchaseroofing material for several oftheir Prayer Houses (thinkabout this, Manyamula hasbeen doing multisite before weever knew what it was!). As a solo pastor at First Pres London I’ve hadthe privilege of working with people of all ages.I have counseled youth, adults, and marriedcouples through major life crises and decisions;discipled members, equipping them to be com-mitted followers of Christ and leaders in thechurch; taught Sunday school classes for youthand adults; led the leadership training coursesfor new elders; performed weddings and funer-als… there’s not much that happens at churchthat I haven’t taken a turn with!

I am an outgoing person who prefers hands-onministry. Two of my greatest strengths are thatI am teachable and I am very enthusiastic. Ilove motivating through encouragement, equip-ping others through discipleship, and leading byexample. In order to be a good leader, you musthave the trust of the people you are leading. By

meeting peoplewhere they are, and

listening to their stories, you can then teach throughWord and deed. It is alsoimportant to be a team inministry, just as in theBody of Christ. No one per-son can do everything. Weneed to work together, justas Christ worked with Hisdisciples during his earthlyministry.

My wife Tara and I have been married for al-most 17 years. We have one son, Kyle (13), andtwo daughters, Peyton (12) and Holly (9). Ourfamily loves doing all sorts of outdoor activitiestogether - we lived in Austin while I was in sem-inary, so we're familiar with Austin's outdoorlifestyle! See you June 17th !

Meet Ted Thulin, our new associate pastor!
