LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF A KINGThe Old Testament story of David

clothes faith in flesh, as young David grows to be a King.

Chosen while still a shepherd, God takes David on a winding journey that guides him through all the struggles and breakthroughs that mark any life of faith. As he grows to become a great leader, with a heart of faithfulness compassion and integrity, David deals with opposition and praise, bad bosses and life-giving friendships, and internal sin and brokenness as well as a remarkable heart after God.

In short, David had to face life like we have to face life.

The lessons that he learned will help each of us negotiate a deep spiritual life in an increasingly complex world. In this series, you may find it particularly useful to preview the scriptures and themes before worship (see page 9 of this newsletter).

Preparing the hearts of our own leaders

The second weekend in February the Leadership team, staff, elders and deacons pull away for a retreat. At the retreat we work to build the relationships that foster trust. This trust gives us the ability to make work together with a deep sense of community and it fosters wise decisions.

Two primary things will focus our time together on the retreat. First, SHPC has been asked to begin a center for new worshiping communities. The denomination is funding this new initiative to start new Presbyterian worshiping communities throughout a five state area including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Our first step is to hire a director and then identify places of health and opportunity for new communities to begin. SHPC will be shepherding this process as we work with three other centers being established around the country. The denomination initially came to us because of entrepreneurial culture that they identified in SHPC and our willingness to take chances. Pray for our leaders as they take on this new work.

The second focus of our retreat will be on the new 5 year ministry plan that we are developing. Nancy Herlin is our guide and we have put together a team including Ken Lauber, Duane Pietsch, Dianne Simmons, Judy Schroeder and David Thompson. They will work through the spring to engage the congregation and our ministry teams in building a vision for our ministry together through 2019.

Again, please add them to your prayers as we seek God’s best for our community.

2013/2014 SHPC Brodie News2013 marked the first full year for the Brodie Campus,

and over the past year we have established a solid foundation for outreach & ministry. I want to once again thank all of the Pilgrims who took a giant step of faith and left the familiar surrounds of the William Cannon Campus to venture further south. The original group of Pilgrims did not necessarily know each other very well, but over the past year, we have really grown into a body of followers who know and care deeply for each other.

We have seen a steady flow of visitors come through the doors at Brodie, with a good number of them joining the church family, and we have celebrated 10 new members joining the church who are Brodie attendees. We are very thankful for the new additions of Hagan & Kristal Chole, Jason & Lindsee Sanchez, Bruce & Rose Broslat, Elizabeth Flores Jon & Anna Sandvick & Rick Smith. We have also had a few more families who weren’t in the original Pilgrim group, but have decided to make the Brodie Campus their home for worship, and we have seen a baby boom, welcoming 9—that’s right, NINE—precious babies, 5 whom have been baptized.

This past year we have been richly blessed with the addition of Josh Coulter as our Worship Leader. Josh has a deep love for Jesus and has a very authentic leadership style. His talents go way beyond his ability to sing and play guitar, he has a real heart for relational ministry. He also has done a great job putting a worship band together and is a joy to partner with in ministry.

Last fall we restructured our Children’s Ministry time to offer it during our hour of worship. Our goal is to offer an inviting hour of worship/children’s ministry to families who are un-churched or have been out of

church for some time. This one-hour model is the model the multi-site church concept is built upon. We are continuing to evaluate if it is the best model for us at SHPC as we head into the future.

Hopefully you now have a better picture of what is happening down at the Brodie Campus. I want to personally thank everyone at our church again for taking this leap of faith to launch this new site. Thank you for all your prayers and support. Thank you to those of you who have come and joined us for worship. If you have not visited before, please know that you are always welcome. The bigger our core group is each Sunday the more welcoming and inviting the environment becomes to new visitors.

As we look ahead to what God has in store for 2014 we do so with great anticipation. The new long awaited building is coming soon. After several months of jumping hurdles to get necessary permitting, plans, documentation and approvals, the off-site production of the building is nearing completion, and we will soon break ground on construction of our new Family Ministry Center. Once the building arrives there will still be a lot of work to do before the doors will be officially open,

but we are tremendously excited at the possibilities in front of us in filling that space to study and

celebrate the word of God together! I want to thank everyone who has given

so generously to make this building possible. I can’t wait to see the

lives that will be impacted and changed as the good

news of the Jesus Christ is shared within the

new building’s walls and beyond.

MISSIONChildren’s Activity Leaders Wanted!

Manos de Cristo is happy to announce a new area for children in the Education wing of their building! They are looking for some volunteers to watch the children while their parents are in class.

Some of the adult students who come to classes are parents of young children. Many times, lack of childcare is an obstacle to attending classes. Manos would like to offer childcare during class times throughout the semester. The location would be next to the regular classrooms.

The time commitment would be at least once a week for the 16-week semester. Days include:• Weekday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 am• OR Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 pmManos already has the support of the Austin Public Library, who will be sending someone to do story time with

the kids on Wednesday mornings from 10 to 10:30. If that sounds fun, be sure to choose that day to come and help out!

Fall Faith Build Celebration!November 11th was the Habitat for Humanity

dedication for the homes built in the fall, including the one Shepherd of the Hills participated in for the Martinez family.

GUATEMALA 2014If you feel your heart being pulled to serve in a new way, and you’ve been

praying for a powerful way to use your gifts, and maybe even get your hands a little dirty at the same time, then you should be considering joining the 2014 Guatemala Mission Adventure.

We have a long standing relationship with many folks in Guatemala though our work with Living Water for the World and the school and orphanage with which we work. This is an amazing hands-on, highly relational trip that is guaranteed to grow your faith.

Ride for RefugeSHPC has long supported Refugee Services of

Texas in their efforts to help newly-arrived refugees settle in Austin. Join or contribute to Team SHPC at the Ride For Refuge to raise awareness and support of vulnerable populations in Austin:

Members and friends of SHPC, with our without cycling experience may join! This event is a 10, 35 or 60 mile bike ride on Saturday February 8th, 2014 to support refugees in Austin.

Please join us for the Soup-to-Nuts luncheon on February 18th at 11:00am in the FMC. Laura Sherman who is an architect will make a presentation on “Aging in Place” as it relates to architectural considerations for your home as you grow older. Laura has had personal experience with the topic that she will be sharing with us.

Beanbag Baseball - March 23rd Spring means it is baseball time again! Come to

play or to cheer for your favorite team. Who will win this year – The Saints or The Sinners? Of course there will also be hot dogs. This is a free event and no reservations are required. Invite a friend to join you after the 11:00 service on March 23rd.

Fredericksburg Bus Trip - April 3rd Our spring bus trip will be to Fredericksburg on

Thursday, April 3rd. We will tour the Nimitz Museum. Then there will be free time to have lunch, shop, see the painted churches, or go back to spend more time in the museum. We’ll depart from SHPC at 8:30 and return at 5:00. Join us for a fun-filled day with some friends.

Spring Retreat at Camp Buckner – April 29th to May 1st

Save the dates now for this annual event which is always fun! Details will be released as soon as plans are finalized. This midweek retreat provides a great chance to really get to know your fellow PrimeTime members. Camp Buckner in the spring is beautiful! The hotel-style rooms are quite comfortable and are very close to our meeting room and handicapped rooms are available. Rides are available to the dining hall.

ADULT MINISTRYAlpha Course Begins February 2nd.

If you enjoyed Explore God and are interested in continuing to wrestle with similar questions, such as ‘What is the point of life? Why is there suffering in the world? What happens when we die? and more…then we encourage you to join us at Alpha.

Alpha is a practical introduction to the Christian faith that gives participants an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Alpha is a 10 week course that will

meet on Sundays from 6-8pm on the William Cannon Campus. There is no charge for the Alpha course.

Association of Retired Christian MenThe Association of Retired Christian Men (ARCM)

meets each Thursday in the SHPC William Cannon library at 10:00 a.m.. The meetings last about 1 ½ hours. From Christmas 2013 until Easter this year, we are tracing Jesus’ public ministry by examining Biblical text including His teachings through scripture including the Sermon on the Mount, parables and miracles He performed.

We recently welcomed two new gentlemen to our group, Bob Carroll and Craig Jennings. If you are up to a challenge, attend with us, sip coffee, eat cookies, and share in our Christian brotherhood.

We recently adopted a compelling slogan: “Be nice to everyone.” We adopted this because of the many media releases related to bullying going on in Austin schools. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone would follow this slogan? We all need to practice what we preach, and those of us who are practicing it notice that we do feel a lot better about the matter whenever we go out of our way to make it happen.


SHPC Men’s Book ClubThe Men’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, February

13, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in Portable A on the William Cannon Campus. The book is Jim Wallis’ On God’s Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn’t Learned about Serving the Common Good. This is from the description of the book on Sojourner’s Web site:

Jim Wallis’ newest book, On God’s Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn’t Learned About Serving the Common Good, examines the deepest problems this world faces. What we need is a commitment to an ancient idea whose time has urgently come: the common good.

How do we work together, even with people we don’t agree with? How do we treat each other, especially the poorest and most vulnerable? How do we take care of not just ourselves, but also one another? Wallis tackles these questions and more in this challenging, yet hopeful book.

Attention Brodie Campus Men! You are invited to join Dale Shumaker & Pastor Ted Thulin in launching a Brodie Men’s Group to meet twice a month from 6:30-7:30am at the Brodie Campus.

This will be a time to talk over a good cup of coffee, to build community and to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. It will also be a time to pray & encourage each other to be servant leaders in our families and in our church. Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 28th. Piece on Earth Quilt Meeting:For all quilters and quilter Wanna-be’s, our one day

a month gathering will be the 4th Saturday of each month and we next meet on Feb 22nd from 10:15 until 3:00 at the Valli and Kim Quilt Shop in Dripping Springs. Last year the Piece on Earth quilters made 30 quilts which our Prime Time group distributed to Meals on Wheels recipients.

God and FamilyCalling all 4th and 5th Graders! SHPC

will host a special 7-session program called “God and Family” on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. February 4th through the end of March.

The program is sponsored by P.R.A.Y. (Programs of Religious Activities with Youth), the Boy

Scouts and Girl Scouts, but it is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. The cost is $17.50 per child, which covers the workbook, certificate of completion, medallion and pizza party at completion. Each child is to have an adult mentor (parent) participate as well. The cost for

the mentor is also $17.50 which includes their workbook, certificate of completion, pin and pizza party.

Culinary-Gifted Volunteers WANTED!Our Big Story Live! team rehearses two Sundays a month at 12:00noon (right after second

worship service in the Family Ministry Center at WC). We like to provide a nutritious meal to fuel these actors for the rigorous rehearsal ahead. If you have foodie tendencies

and would like to coordinate a menu and getting a yummy meal to these “starving artists,” we’d really appreciate the

helping hands! A small budget is available to assist with purchases. If this 2x/monthly role sounds like something you would enjoy and could add to your routine, please

SHPC Preschool NewsWe are enjoying the winter season

here at SHPC Preschool! Here are some highlights:• Did you know it snowed at Shepherd

of the Hills recently? It sure did! With the help of 1,000 pounds of ice and some helpful volunteers, it was time for Winter Wonderland at preschool. The kids had a great time throwing snowballs, making snowmen and exploring all things winter!

• Later this month, we will enjoy our Dinosaur Museum. We are also registering students for the 2014-15 school year at this time.

• Our Bible memory verse is from Jeremiah 29:12 Then you will call upon me and come pray to me, and I will listen to you.


TRUE STUDENT MINISTRIESTHE GREAT ESCAPE

It is time to get registered for the one of our absolute favorite middle school events! THE GREAT ESCAPE ROCKIES is back again and it’s time to get your son or daughter registered as soon as possible. As always, we have a limited number of spaces available to us, and we want your kid to go. The Great Escape Rockies dates are June21st-28th for all incoming 6th, 7th, 8th and outgoing 8th graders. Everybody wants to go to CORE camp!This year we are joining forces

with the amazing folks at PINE COVE to offer the best spring retreats ever!

We are headed up to Tyler Texas to have a blast at one of the top rated camps in the nation. We have two opportunities to attend the Pine Cove Core Camp.

Core Camp one is for our Middle School students (grades 6-8) and Core Camp two is all about High School (grades 9-12). We’ll have good times, great friends and speakers and entertainment guaranteed to thrill. It does not matter if students have just started coming to church or have been to church all their lives, the CORE camp has something for them.

I find that when students are given chance to get away from everything (school stress, parent stress and friend drama), they often become even more

open to the message of Jesus and the grace He offers. All of the background noise of life falls away and they can hear God like never before. It is also in these restful moments that even the toughest of kids begins to let their guard down and become the child of God they are meant to be.
