Inner Strengthby Sherry Smith

Look at the brick arch in the photo. At first glance, you would probably guess that at one time this was an open archway that was then bricked up later. However, that is not the case. This is one part of the inner structure of the Roman Colosseum. Originally, this would not have been visible. It would have been faced with marble. So, why build an arch that would never be walked under or even seen? Why not just a regular brick wall? It is because arches will support much more weight above themselves than flat rows of bricks. This arch, and hundreds of others like it, provided inner strength throughout the huge structure of the Colosseum.

As the SHPC study tour group stood listening to our guide explain this it made me think about our Christian faith and the faith of the early Christians who died here because of their beliefs. Our faith is like a hidden arch within us that gives us our inner strength. We look just like everyone else on the outside. But when we are put under the pressure of bad circumstances or of temptations our faith acts like a structural arch within us. It gives us the support and the strength to survive the circumstances

or resist the temptations. The more that circumstances of life attempt to push down and crush us, the more that arch of our inner faith pushes back. We sometimes experience strength that we never imagined we had because we only discover it when we are under intense pressure.

downs the coming year will hold for us, perhaps it will help us to visualize the idea of a hidden arch within us. As we read the Bible, spend time in prayer, attend worship, or give of ourselves in service to others we can imagine that arch getting stronger and stronger, preparing us for the future. And as we face life’s inevitable trials and tribulations we can find our focus and our strength in the power of faith within us.

“I ask God from the wealth of his glory to give you power through his Spirit to be strong in your inner selves.” Ephesians 3:16 Good News Translation

Of course, an added bonus of being part of a wonderful Christian fellowship such as SHPC is that we can also lean on each other if we feel our own strength fading at some point. Together, supporting each other, we are all even stronger.

A prayer for the New Year:“I pray that God, the source of all hope, will infuse

your lives with an abundance of joy and peace in the midst of your faith so that your hope will overflow through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 The Voice Translation

Stephen Ministryby Deb Ballew

Do people open up to you after talking to you for a short time? Do you wonder if there’s anything you can to do help someone? Are you a good listener? If so there’s an opportunity coming your way.

In February SHPC will be offering a training class for new Stephen Ministers. Speaking from personal experience, when I first walked in to training last year I wondered what I was doing there; after all, there are times I feel I can’t help myself, so I wondered how I could ever be there for someone else. But after completing the training, I feel I not only know more about myself, but also more about how to reach out and be there for someone else.

The training consists of 50 hours of classroom training. While you might be thinking “50 hours?!” Trust me, it goes by faster than you think. The instructors are excellent, the materials you will receive combined with your own life experiences will prepare you for being a caregiver for someone in need.

Watch the bulletin and newsletter for more information.

MISSIONTHANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

Once again, Shepherd of the Hills has demonstrated the hearts of joyful givers in our Christmas missions. After December 8th, the church library was stacked high with 120 Christmas boxes provided by SHPC for homebound seniors and disabled adults through Meals on Wheels. These MOW clients will enjoy food, snuggly socks, scarves and blankets, Christmas decorations and heartfelt cards thanks to your giving spirit.

This year’s Angel Tree has been equally successful. Every angel on the tree was taken, and gifts are being prepared for delivery as this newsletter is being produced.

The Guatemalan Craft Market and Manos de Cristo Tamale sales were once again very successful, providing financial support to many, many recipients of services both locally and internationally.

Thank you, Shepherd of the Hills, for spreading God’s blessings to those less fortunate this Christmas!

The gifts Kathy Segura and Kim Schaffer were sorting above were just a small portion of those given by the SHPC family to Angel Tree and Meals On Wheels recipients.

Shepherd ServesRecent disasters here in Austin area have highlighted Shepherd of the Hills’ need

to mobilize our mission-minded people with quick details about “who, what, where, when and how” when it comes to serving those in need.

If you have a mobile phone that can receive text messages and would like to be part of a growing community of “On Call” mission-minded folks who can help when help is needed, please sign up with our Shepherd Serves texting service.

Simply send a text from your mobile phone that says “@shpcserves” to this number (469) 518-3508. In the event of a disaster, short, simple messages about what, how and where you can respond will be sent directly to your phone.

The need from the recent floods is still very high with many families affected still living in difficult situations, so now is a great time to start getting updates and information. Please subscribe to @shpcserves so we can get you the information on how to help as quickly as possible.

GUATEMALA 2014Now is the time to start thinking

about your summer 2014 mission plans. We hope that you will prayerfully consider joining the Guatemala Mission effort this year.

To support our Guatemala mission preparation, please keep the following activities in mind as you begin the New Year:

January 26th: Chili Fundraiser to Support the Congregational Dinner. The chili dinner is our primary fundraiser for the year. Take the time to ask previous travelers about their experiences.

February: Trip Sign-up Month. A booth will be available in the Narthex all four Sundays in February at the William Cannon Campus and February 2nd at the Brodie Campus.

Come by and learn more about the Guatemala Mission Trips!

Our schedule for this year’s trip is still a work in progress, but typically our activities look something like this:

• Water system installation for youth and adults at a new site.

• Water system maintenance and fellowship activities in El Eden, Palestina, and at the San Bartolome School in San Andres Itzapa.

• Trip to Orphanage Hogar Miguel Magone and the San Batholome School in San Andres Itzapa for fellowship and work projects.

We’re encouraging high school youth to be a part of the Living Waters mission this year. If this sounds like you, and you want to learn more, please contact Michael Killen at [email protected].

We would love to have new mission travelers this year. If the Guatemala trip has been on your heart, let us know that you’re thinking about joining us. We’d be happy to have a Guatemala planning team member or past participant share their experience with you and begin to answer some of your questions.

For further information, please contact Jason Perkey at [email protected] or Dave Parmer at [email protected].

When the temperature is not in your favor...Imagine being accidentally locked out of your car on one of Austin’s colder evenings, then waiting outside

for an hour or more for help getting into the shelter and warmth of your car. It’s not a very fun situation. I know. I’ve been there.

Sadly, many in Austin are in a situation much worse than being temporarily locked out of a car. On average Austin has about 19 nights a year at or below the freezing mark, and on those nights, homeless men, women and children are faced with a life threatening situation. Where will they find shelter on those extremely cold and often wet nights? Who will come to their aid? We hope it will be you.

Shepherd of the Hills participates in a Cold Weather Shelter in downtown Austin called Front Steps (we often

refer to the program as “Freeze Night”), and we need your help with this critical ministry. SHPC is responsible for providing a team

of about 6 people, including 2 men to help ensure safety and security, to Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Austin on any Thursday evening

when the weather is predicted to drop close to or below 32˚F. That team provides a yummy dinner for the guests, who are all women.

After dinner, we have conversation and sometimes card games, then guests and hosts are off to sleep. In the morning we serve

breakfast, then guests return outdoors. We are in desperate need of your help to cover one of those Thursdays in January and February. If you hurry

you can have your pick of the Thursdays! If you would like to be part of the life-saving Front Steps Cold Weather Shelter Mission Project please contact Pastor Mike in the church office 512-892-3580 ext 109.

Prime Time is Hitting the Road!PrimeTime will be going to the Lee Lockwood

Library and Museum in Waco to see the exhibit of seven of Louis Tiffany's stained glass windows.

The 8 foot tall windows depict the seven angels of the churches in Asia Minor named in the book of Revelation. This series was crafted by Tiffany Studios in 1902 for a church in Cincinnati. When the church

was demolished, the seven windows were saved. Today, they are part of a traveling exhibit showcasing the work of Louis Tiffany who revolutionized stain glass work in America.

We will carpool from the William Cannon campus on Thursday, January 16. More details to come!

Thank You Newsletter Crew!I want to send an extra-special “thank-you” to the crew who prepares The Shepherd’s Watch every month for

mailing. I look forward to seeing you each month and hearing your laughter in the library as you work. You do a wonderful job of getting the hundreds of newsletters folded, stickered, stacked and organized so that I never find myself in hot water at the post office, and for that, I am grateful!

Thank you all for being so generous with your time.Blessings to all of you in 2014!

Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for everyone,

especially those who have given up on church, those wanting to investigate Christianity, those who are new to the Christian faith and those wanting to grow in understanding and faith. What is the

NEW CLASS! The Parables of Jesus“I speak to them in parables” Matt. 13:13

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, one of the primary ways He would instruct His disciples was through parables. People would gather from far and wide in order to listen to what Jesus said about the kingdom of God, and the most common way He would explain the kingdom was in parables. But what does God want us to learn from these parables? In this video series, Dr. R.C. Sproul examines several parables of Jesus, exploring the rich truths they reveal about who Jesus is and what He came to achieve through His life, death, and resurrection.

Bob Beardslee will lead this class. The class will view a short video lecture by Reformed theologian, R. C. Sproul, and then answer questions using scripture. Discussion will lead to a deeper understanding of these important teachings of Jesus and how we can apply them to our lives today.

Time: Wednesday mornings, 10:00 to 11:30 Dates: Jan. 15 to Mar. 5 (8 weeks)Where: SHPC LibraryLeader/Contact: Bob Beardslee at [email protected]

SHPC Men’s Book Club: January MeetingThe SHPC Men’s Book Club will

meet on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 7 pm in room 9, William Cannon Campus to discuss Reza Aslan’s Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. Using historical writings about first century Palestine, like the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, as well as Roman documents of the time, Aslan portrays Jesus’ life and the times in which He lived.

Concerning his goal in writing the book, Aslan states that his “. . . hope is that this book provides

readers with a more complete sense of the world in which Jesus lived. We cannot truly understand Jesus’ words and deeds if we separate them from the religious and political context of his time. Regardless of whether you think of Jesus as a prophet, a teacher, or God incarnate, it is important to remember that he did not live in a vacuum.

Whatever else Jesus was, he was, without question, a man of his time. This is true for all of us. The

key to understanding who Jesus was and what Jesus meant lies in understanding the times in which he lived. That’s what this book does. It drops you in the middle of Jesus’ world and helps you understand the context out of which he arose and in which preached.” Gene Wright will lead the discussion.

All SHPC men are invited to attend. For more information, contact Stefan Haag at 512-288-3479 or [email protected].

Mary Martha NewsOur January 2, 2014 Circle

meeting will be in our regular location: Building B, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Coffee and cookies will be ready, and our lesson will be Lesson 3 in our book.

TRUE STUDENT MINISTRIESThis Month at True: GAME ON: The Life Daniel1. We’re Teaching…

Preparation and practice. In any competition or event, the win is almost always connected to the competitor’s level of preparation. Practice and skill-building may not seem necessary in the moment, but when it’s Game On, those skills are what take us across the finish line.

Daniel was a young Jewish boy who encountered his “Game On” moment over and over. Ultimately, it was the preparation of his faith skills that helped him through the most difficult of those moments.

2. Think About…Your student experiences so

many influences each day. They receive messages from you—their parents, teachers, other students, media, ministry leaders, coaches and a variety of other sources. Do you ever wonder which voice rises above the rest of the noise? Whose voice has the most impact on their actions?

Despite all of the noise in their lives, studies show that students largely develop their ideas about God at home. Believe it or not, they are still listening to you, and not just when you’re talking about spiritual things. They are listening intently

when you talk to them AND when they hear you talk to other adults about money, relationships, faith, culture, and life choices.

Students take their cues on how to live from parents more than anywhere else. This is particularly true when it comes to faith. The spoken or unspoken posture that we in our families take toward Scripture, prayer, service and worship will ultimately be the model our students use as how things “should be done.”

How can you leverage your influence as a parent without resorting to lecturing or re-preaching each Sunday’s sermon?

Partner with our student ministry. Connect with your child’s small group leader to find out how you can engage your student in conversation about that topic at home.

Be transparent about your own faith. Talking with your teenager about faith doesn’t mean that you have to have a perfect message prepared at all times. Just try to be transparent with them about how and when you pray as well as what happens when you don’t receive an answer right away. If you spend time reading Scripture, do so in a

place where they might see you and can ask questions.

Ask your teen what he or she is learning. Students process spiritual information in different ways. Just because your teenage daughter doesn’t volunteer to tell you what she’s learning at church doesn’t mean she simply goes to see her friends. Often students simply do not know how to begin the conversation with their parents about spiritual matters. Simply opening the door can allow you to speak valuable words into their life.

3. Try…Here is an open-ended

conversation starter to encourage dialogue between you and your child about faith. These can be asked at dinner, in the car, or anywhere that conversation flows easily. Remember to model the way by answering the question first and then asking your student. • Week 1: What do you appreciate

about God?• Week 2: Where have you noticed

God’s activity around you?• Week 3: How can we make God

a bigger priority in our family? • Week 4: How can God use our

family?

Parents, GRAB YOUR PHONES!Get last minute details about everything happening in the student ministry sent right to your

phone by subscribing to True Texts! Our groups at True are much larger now, and the need to get emergency and last minute reminder information to you as a parent is very high.

True Texts allows us to send you last minute reminders and information like, “Group is canceled due to ice storm,” or, “Don’t forget to bring a game to play in your small group tonight!” To subscribe, simply text the message “@Trueparent” to (469)518-3508 and you are subscribed.

Thank you for being part of the partnership between parents and the church as we work hard toward the common goal of nurturing a deep and lasting faith in our students.

Page 11: 2014 - January - The Shepherd's Watch Newsletter

Setting PrioritiesAt True, students talk to us often about the issues they face—issues of priorities, families, friendships and more.

We don’t, of course, dispense any tried-and-true secrets to overcoming these issues. After all, we know that knowledge alone is never enough. Instead, we work to lead them to be the seekers, discoverers and applicators of God’s true answers through Scripture.

One of toughest issues we face as a True leadership team is what we call competing priorities. It can be very hard for our sons and daughters to see being at church and in a faith community as having real value when other commitments (both trivial and significant) consistently take priority over being connected to their church community.

Nearly all of our students miss True at least occasionally because of extra-curricular events or a family trip, but what makes the most lasting impact are long term commitments that make it nearly impossible for a student to remain deeply connected to their church body.

It does not take much time for a student to become disconnected or distant from their church family. Studies show that in only a three week break in attendance, a student feels extreme discomfort in coming back into a church environment. They simply feel awkward, and that awkward feeling can be more than enough for the student to push back on parents trying to encourage their attendance at church or True.

So what can you do to help? First, encourage your student to come back home to True and/or worship, regardless of how long they’ve

been away. We’re ready for them and praying for their return!Second, seek out some scriptures together to help your students manage their priorities. Try Matthew 6:33, “But

seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Philippians 4:6-8 also reminds us that when God is our highest priority, the stressors of our students’ daily lives

become more manageable. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Finally, stay in touch with True leadership, and keep on top of what we’re doing. You never know what single activity, movie night, Instagram picture of their small group or monthly theme will pique your kid’s interest enough for them to want to come back.
