Rewiew of Liturgical vessels for holding liquid in early Christian ussage

Abstract: is paper deals with etymology, historical sources and archeology concerning early Chris-tianity in order to refer ancient liturgical vessels. An extensive terminology develops trough a courseof time which reects the importance attributed to them by the early Christians. We must resource totexts of which old versions have been preserved only, either in Latin or in oriental languages. On thebasics of description of ritual acts, vessels for holding liquid are mentioned in Greek, Jewish, Latin

terms. It is our intention, by as complete examination of the texts as possible, to determine the originsand meanings of these group of terms for liturgical vessels. Special attention is paid to the use of paganand Jewish terminology which has been assumed exercised a direct inuence upon the early Christianusage. On the other hand there is an attempt to avoid some of these terms by early Christians. Quota-tions from the New Testament, historical sources or scientic papers are sometimes in absence of thedata related to the liturgical vessels as well as its translation versions due to many transcriptions andinterpreters, consist a large number of dierent terms for each vessel. Sometimes the data from therst three centuries are so or a meaning is still in such process of development that the later literaturemust be consulted in order to see how an early meaning has became established in early Christianlinguistic usage.
