Saratoga Central Catholic School – St. Peter’s Academy Alumni & Friends Newsletter Volume 6 Winter 2017 MORE IMPROVEMENTS AT SARATOGA CATHOLIC CENTRAL SCHOOL The major capital improvements to the school building and grounds that began a few years ago still continue. Over the summer the central lobby was totally renovated. The new design presents a fresh, welcoming and uncluttered look, thanks to Trustee Dawn Martinez and her vision. The lobby and all three hallways were newly carpeted and painted, and new lobby furniture and wall art were installed. Wall graphics that visually represent the opportunities and programs that SCC offers to our students were designed and placed by Ann Frankowski. In addition to the efforts of Dawn Martinez and Ann Frankowski, many parents, alumni, students and friends also contributed to this renovation. We would like to thank John Pikus, Jim and Elise Browell, Megan and Kyle Hennessy, Paul D’Ambro, Kyle Bailey, Cathy and Nick Winslow, Mark LaSalle, Janine and Will Fizer, Carl Geonie, Nick Conrad and Brooke, Molly and Grace O’Reilly for their help with the lobby makeover. The rest of the school has also received several improvements recently. Jim Burns was responsible for the replacement of two electrical panels and upgrading the electric in the 2nd floor classrooms. He also donated the funds for a new copper roof scupper and downspout and the carpeting/installation for the ground floor hallway. A new school van with wifi is now providing students transport on SCC’s new “Route 29 West” daily run to and from Broadalbin. Smart Boards and interactive whiteboards have also been installed in the classrooms. Outside the school, a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary with landscaping was donated by William and Maureen Bergan, Christopher and Jenn Johnson and Jim and Christina Burns. The statue of St. Joseph in front of the school was painted white to match the Blessed Virgin by Alumni, Christopher Larson and Maria Izzo. Four benches placed in front of the statues were donated by Alumni Maria Izzo, Lucio Izzo, Evelina Izzo Schretzlmeir and Anna Izzo Iannacito in loving memory of their mother, Giovannina Izzo. These improvements follow the recent replacement of sidewalks and the removal, refinishing and resetting of the main entrance granite staircase. Knights of Columbus Council 246 volunteers patched and stained the entire exterior concrete foundation. New railings along the north sidewalk ramp were also replaced thanks to Randy and Chris Edgerly. In addition, all the exterior limestone was pointed, all lighting was upgraded to LED lighting and Kyle Learch was instrumental in the replacement of the main entrance doors. New phones are in every room in the school and a new bell system was installed and is in use. New wireless access ports were also installed throughout the school. Lastly, an automated indoor batting cage was donated by John Vrana of Sports4All. The next time you’re near Saratoga Central Catholic School, stop in and see what the hard work and generosity of our parents, friends and Alumni has accomplished.

John J. “Jack” Wilpers, SPA Class of 1937- A World War II Unsung HeroJohn J. Wilpers was born in Albany, New York in 1919. He grew up in Saratoga Springs and attended St. Peter’s Academy. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and later transferred to a counterintelligence unit under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II in New Guinea, the Philippines and Okinawa. In September 1945, days after the Japanese surrender, Lieutenant Wilpers played a historical and heroic role in the capture of one of WWII’s most notorious leaders.

According to media accounts Lieutenant John J. Wilpers was a key member of the Army intelligence unit that arrested and prevented the suicide of Hideki Tojo. The Allied powers sought out the Former Japanese Prime Minister to put him on trial for the many atrocities committed by Japanese troops and Lt. Wilpers was dispatched to arrest Tojo. The 308th Counter Intelligence Corps, Wilpers detachment unit approached Tojo’s home and heard a gunshot. Wilpers forced his way into the house and found Tojo slumped in a chair with a pistol in his hand and a gunshot wound in his chest. Lt. Wilpers was ordered to bring him back alive so he ordered a Japanese doctor to aid Tojo. At first the doctor resisted but

complied when Lt. Wilpers confronted him with a gun. The former Prime Minister survived and in 1948 was tried and executed for war crimes. In 2010, decades after this historical day, Jack was awarded the Bronze Star for his brave actions. The citation sites Lt. Wilpers’ initiative, ingenuity and courage when the US Army captured and detained Hideki Tojo. His actions assured that Tojo would live and stand trial.

According to media accounts, after the war, Mr. Wilpers worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. During his career with the CIA, his assignments included supervising the staff that profiled Soviet and Chinese scientists and supervising the translators for American information agencies in Eastern Europe. He retired from the CIA in 1975. In 1977 he retired from the Army Reserve as a colonel. Mr. Wilpers died in 2013 in Silver Springs, Maryland at the age of 93. His wife Marian died in 2006 and they had five children and seven grandchildren. Thank you for your service to our nation Colonel Wilpers.
