AVALANCHES at the ski station of Benasque in the province of Huesca have left 58 guests and 20 employees stranded in a hotel on the resort.

In total, at least 240 skiers are said to be trapped in stations throughout the north of the province due to a series of avalanches falling over Friday night and Saturday morning.

Rescue workers have been trying to clear a path through the snowdrift, which has cut off the A-139 in Llanos del Hospital, the nearest village to the resort.

They are digging an ‘escape route’ out of the side door of the Hospital de Benasque hotel, because to do so from the main entrance would take them several days, says manager Jorge Mayoral.

The avalanche, said to be caused by rainfall and increasing temperatures in the last few days, is one of several which have hit the entire valley.

In nearby Senarta, three have blocked off the diversion to the hospital.

Further along the Spanish Pyrénées, an avalanche fell onto the C142b in La Pleta de Tanau, in the Naut Aran area of the province of Lleida.

A house with 10 occupants were left

surrounded and had to be dug out and given temporary accommodation by the town hall.

Four roads in the region of Catalunya have been blocked by snow and, in some cases, avalanches.

These are the BV-4024 from Bagà to Coll de Pal and the BV-4031 from Castellar de N’Hug to La Molina, both in the province of Barcelona, and the C-28 from Vaquèira to Casa Sastrada-Els Avets and the C-142b from Vaquèira to Pla de Beret, both in the province of Lleida.

At least one ski station has been forced to close because of damage to pylons caused by avalanches – this is particularly the case at Astún in the Pyrénées of Huesca where an entire residential complex has been left without electricity and the resort is not expected to open again until later today (Sunday) after two days of being shut.

So far, none of the avalanches reported have caused any injuries or fatalities, or any significant property damage.

COCA-COLA Iberian Partners is set to close four of its 11 factories in Spain and make 750 people redundant.

Another 500 staff members will be relocated..

According to the global soft drinks giant, the plant at Fuenlabrada (Madrid), where the Spanish head office is based, together with those in Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Colloto (near Oviedo in Asturias) will be shut and redundancy consultations will be ongoing until Friday, February 21.

Coca-cola has around 4,200 employees in Spain, and wants to axe the factories where 1,250 of them work to ‘cut down on inefficiency and duplication of work’ and to ‘consolidate criteria’ in its activities and procedures.

The firm expects to be able to offer voluntary redundancies where this would suit certain workers, and early retirement packages, to reduce the number of people who will be forced into the dole queue.

A total of 500 places will be offered in other factories around Spain, depending upon the extent to which

existing staff members are able to relocate.

The firm wants to spread out its production base more in a ‘new circular map’ to include more concentration on the north of Spain, the east, Balearic Islands and the centre of the country.

Considering this to be a ‘more efficient’ way of working, Coca-cola will increase production in its remaining seven factories in A Coruña, in the north-western region of Galicia; Bilbao, in the Basque Country; Málaga, Sevilla, Barcelona, Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Customer services will be centred entirely in Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla ‘to improve response time and efficiency’, according to the multinational.

Coca-Cola Iberian Partners claims its business structure and production activities have been ‘too fragmented’ in the country and wishes to create a tighter corporate framework.

Beat the bloat! Most of us have experienced

the feeling of being bloated, when your tummy is stretched, puffy and uncomfortable. It often happens after a big weekend or over a festive season. But for some people, bloating is more than an occasional inconvenience.

If your stomach or tummy often feels bloated, it could be due to:

•excess wind •constipation •swallowing air (from talking while

eating etc) •food intolerance •irritable bowel syndrome

Excess windCut down on foods known to cause

wind and bloating, such as: •beans •onions •broccoli •cabbage •sprouts •cauliflower But make sure you still eat five

portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

ConstipationIf you get constipation, take steps

to prevent it with a fibre-rich diet, drinking lots of fluids and taking regular exercise. Even a 20-30 minute brisk walk four times a week can improve your bowel function.

swallowing airTry not to swallow too much air.

Don’t talk and eat at the same

time, sit down to eat (sitting upright and not slumped over), reduce the amount of fizzy drinks you consume, stop chewing gum and chew with your mouth closed so that you’re not taking in excess air.

food intoleranceFood intolerance can lead to

bloating when:•Your bowel doesn’t empty

properly. •The food causes gas to be

trapped. •Too much gas is produced as a

reaction to the food. The main offenders are wheat

or gluten and dairy products. The best approach if you have a food intolerance is to eat less of the culprit food or cut it out completely.

Keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting everything that you eat and drink and when bloating troubles you most. But don’t get rid of food groups long-term without advice.

irritable bowel syndromePeople with irritable bowel

syndrome often complain of bloating, especially in the evening. The bloating of IBS doesn’t seem to be linked with excess wind. It’s thought to be down to erratic propulsion of contents through the bowel. It can help to cut down on fatty or high-fibre foods. Peppermint tea or capsules have also been reported to help ease IBS symptoms.

If your bloating symptoms persist, consult your Doctor!

news

MAYORS in town and city councils throughout Spain will not be allowed to earn more than 100,000 euros a year from next week onwards – the same as the maximum wage for a Secretary of State within the government.

This could mean some mayors will see their income reduced, although it may give licence to others to increase theirs.

A table of earnings has been created by the Council of Ministers and will be included in a new Bill of Law and in the Law of General State Budgets, which fixes upper limits for salaries for everyone working in public office.

Mayors of towns or cities with a population of half a million people or more will see their wages capped at 100,000 euros a year, whilst those with fewer than half a million but more than 300,000 will not be allowed to earn more than 90,000 per annum.

With a population of over 150,000 and up to 300,000 people inclusive, they cannot be paid more than an annual 80,000 euros.

For towns with over 75,000 residents up to 150,000, maximum wages are set at 75,000 euros a year and drop to 65,000 euros for mayors of towns with more than 50,000 and up to and including 75,000 residents.

Typical coastal resort towns will fall into the lower population brackets, from 5,001 inhabitants to 10,000 where their mayors cannot earn more than 45,000

euros per annum; from 10,001 to 20,000 people, where the mayor’s maximum salary will be set at 50,000 euros a year, or from 20,001 to 50,000 inhabitants which means an upper limit on wages of 55,000 euros annually.

In villages of 1,000 or more up to a maximum of 5,000 residents, the mayor cannot be paid more than 40,000 euros a year.

For small villages and hamlets with their own ‘town’ council and fewer than 1,000 people on the census, the law states that the job of mayor will not be full-time.

Where they work half their hours in office, they can earn up to 22,000 euros a year and for those who work three-quarters of the week as a mayor, 30,000 euros.

Those who only spent 25 to 49 per cent of their time cannot earn more than 15,000 euros a year.

If the job means even fewer hours, it is likely the mayor will only be paid expenses for attending meetings.

In many small towns and villages, the mayor normally has another day-job or owns a business and only spends part of his or her time running council affairs.

Hi - I am still waiting for a forever home, I am classed as a small breed as I weigh under 10kgs. I am tall and slim. Back in the 18th century I was bred from a Jack Russell and a

Terrier, to make a good rat catching dog.Today this breed is still recognised in Spain, and is a popular breed.

What To See and Do in Almerimar

this is very much a small resort – the population is only just over 6,000 so it is not a large place.

You would come here to relax on the beaches and perhaps play some golf.

You are close to the mountains of Sierra de gádor. You could easily ski or snowboard at Sierra

nevada in the morning and be on the beach for the afternoon – not many places can offer that variety!

the marina has 1,100 berths. You can take boat trips and also go diving, sailing, windsurf and

fishing. With over 13km of wide sandy beaches you can

truly have a relaxing beach holiday with everything you need within walking distance.

this is a great area if you like nature and walking and hiking. there are also stables nearby so you can

go horse-riding.Head west to see the castillo (castle) guardias

viejas.Just an hour’s drive away you can visit the famous “cabo de gata” reserve with some amazing remote

beaches, perfect some nude sunbathing.Just 30 minutes drive gets you to almeria city with

it’s historic castle, cathedral and shops. The magnificent city of Granada with its historic district and alhambra Palace is 90 minutes drive

Skateboarding cat too cool for wordsIt’s January and in Hollywood

that can mean only one thing, - the tuxedos and designer gowns come out for the merry-go-round that is the awards season. Still to come are the BAFTAS (Sunday 16th February) and of course the oScArS ( Sunday 2nd March ) but like the tennis grand slams, the season has four parts

First cab on the rank is the annual GolDEn GloBE awards. These are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and today they cover both film and television productions. This years ceremony was the 71st in a history that dates back to 1943. In october of that year, with world war II governing much of the output of the major studios, a small group of just eight foreign journalists got together and formed the HollYwooD

ForEIGn corrESPonDEnTS ASSocIATIon. Their aim was to promote a closer relationship with the American movie industry - a cultural bridge between the old isolationist u.S.A. and the new world being forged in Europe.

To that end, in January 1944 they presented their first awards. There were only five… Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress . The ceremony was a very low-key affair held on the Twentieth century Fox back-lot with the winners being presented with a simple scroll. The first winning film was THE SONG OF BERNADETTE.

with the passing of time, there were some key changes that would lead to the development of what is today a well known and respected event.

The statuette - a globe of the earth with a reel of film wrapped around it - made its first appearance in 1947.

But the change that makes the Globes unique was made in 1952 when for the first time they gave two best film awards, splitting the field into two categories - Drama and comedy/Musical. For the journalists, the view was that you can’t compare apples and oranges or, for example, Sellers as clouseau with Brando in “A Streetcar named Desire”. one of the great benefits is that more films and more performances can be recognised each year, with the original five major categories being doubled up in this way.

In 1953, they decided to create an award to recognise an outstanding individual contribution to the industry, naming it after its first recipient. And so, THE cEcIl B. DeMIllE AwArD was born. wAlT DISnEY was honoured in 1954 and the most recent recipient was wooDY AllEn.

Then in 1956, recognising the importance of a new, young medium, the association decided to give a set of awards to television performances.

now, the TV awards have equal status and are equally coveted. Perhaps this explains why so many movie “stars” are now committing themselves to fronting multiple-episode TV series.

The ceremony was shown on television for the first time in 1958 and featured a stage invasion by a group of men in tuxedos, drinks and cigarettes in hand. one was Frank Sinatra (who’d just won for his role in “Pal Joey”). The others were Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Sammy Davis Jnr … THE RAT PACK! whether they were drunk or just bored, they created a sensation and were asked to return the following year as Mc’s. up until this time, the journalists of the association had handed over the prizes but the future was clear. From this point forward the globes would be presented by movie and TV stars.

At this years Awards ceremony, which took place on Sunday January 12th, the best picture winners were 12 YEArS A SlAVE (Drama) and AMErIcAn HuSTlE (comedy). while, MATTHEw McconAuGHEY (“Dallas Buyers club), lEonArDo DicAPrIo (wolf of wall Street), cATE BlAncHETT (Blue Jasmine) and AMY ADAMS (American Hustle) picked up the leading actor awards with JArED lETo (Dallas Buyers club) and JEnnIFEr lAwrEncE (American Hustle) winning in the supporting categories. Best Director was AlFonSo cuAron for “GrAVITY”.

So the battle lines have been drawn, the bookies odds have been revised and the Academy Award nominees are enjoying the warm glow of oscar recognition …. For now!Next up … The SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS. Watch this space.

14 SOLTIMES JANUARY 2014 ...remember to say you saw it in the sOL TiMEs

last week I read an intriguing article. The author suggested that Tablet devices, that are currently so popular, will replace the desktop and laptop! Having given it some thought, as articles like this sometime do, I would like to make a counter proposal.First, let’s consider the fact that they

are the ‘latest, Greatest Thing’. we are genetically pre-disposed, not too unlike the magpie, to ‘Shiny new Things’, usually with the utterance of “Oooh Shiny”! we could go on to say that this innate curiosity is genetically encoded to ensure our continued existence, and that fire, the wheel and everything else that man is proud of, is a result of this curiosity – but that is just high brow and boring! we have evolved (insult the religious

zealots), or been given (insult the evolutionists) the ability to reason. To have developed tools that allow for logical progression towards a ‘correct’ answer. Today I would like to use some of the logic that Huddersfield Uni crammed into my

head during my time, 23 years ago, very successfully studying for my computer qualifications.consider, if you

will, the power to size ratio of modern computing devices. The ‘Mainframe’ is still the ‘Daddy’ by being the most powerful of all computer systems because of the workload that is has to deal with. Although there are steps between, for you and I, the next in line is the Desktop. This tool is the defacto standard for all

‘real’ business work and has been for decades. The benefits are: easily accessible and replaceable parts should anything fail, which in time, everything does, and solid reliability. I could not complete half the work that is required of me on anything less. The drawbacks take the form of a lack of portability. who wants to lug a tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse, when a laptop is so much easier? The laptop has been the ‘Yuppy’ tool of

preference for several decades, becoming more compact, lighter and more powerful. For the vast majority of the people who have retired and are ‘living the dream’, this tool is not only the most appropriate but the best. It’s usefulness is only limited be your ability to dream up alternative uses for it and it’s relative power. It is a fact that the power house processor in a laptop is, and always has been, a ‘cut down’ version of the processor in it’s desk bound cousin.

Just before Christmas, my wife Katherine needed a letter to go registered. Nowadays with internet banking, paperless bank statements and emails for business rather than letters; I don’t have much to do with the post other than collecting my weekly newspaper subscription from the UK.

Having lived in deepest darkest Almeria I was used to the strange opening hours post offices adhere to come hell, high water or the urge for a coffee break. 1115-1145 I remember being one such example, very convenient. Albox being a cosmopolitan place has a post office which stays open until the early morning hours, well 230 in the afternoon so is a much more convenient place to post a letter.

Not being near Albox that day I instead hitched up the horses and headed for Sabanillas near Estepona where by now regular readers will have deduced I live 3/4s of the time. Queuing not being a natural act for our Spanish hosts I prepared for a scrum, instead I wondered why the place was silently packed with people looking like they had lost the will to live. Taking number 83 from the ticket dispenser, realisation dawned as the monitor displayed……26.

There are only two

counters and being Christmas both were manned but only one was open, the lady at the other counter chatted to her colleague and carefully shuffled papers. Folk who knew the game would pop in, grab a ticket and then do the weekly shop, or visit relatives abroad returning later. Being a novice I sat patiently. The numbers slowly progressed, once in a while they would race forward 2-3 places as people in the queue either forgot what they had come for and left, or died of old age.

After an hour still nothing! The numbers crawled into the 60s and I felt dizzy with anticipation, I couldn’t imagine why it took so long to be served. Finally after an hour and half it was my turn. I passed the letter to the assistant who gave me a form to fill in, why the forms couldn’t be left for people to fill in while they wait is anyone’s guess. A long wait aside that was that or so I thought.

Two weeks later Katherine asked me to buy some stamps. A look of terror passed across my eyes and I begged not to have to go back. Craftily I thought I would try the local newsagents, but no stamps. Thinking out of the box, I tried the greetings card shop. The

owner wearily told me that it’s almost impossible to get a licence to sell stamps so I headed again for the post office.

After only 45 minutes of queuing I asked for a 1.50€ stamp, the lady apologised saying only 75x stamps were available – sell me 2, I said helpfully. Being a post office I assumed stamps would be close to hand but no; – the lady now sloth like went and collected a file from a locked cupboard, then sat and searched for the stamps within. More difficulty as they were joined together, much bending and tearing took place until finally my stamps were free. My money was on the desk and I prepared to collect my prize but at this point so pleased with her exertions the lady stop to chat to her mate. My patience snapped, ‘Give me my stamps’ I growled, shocked that someone could be in a rush she handed them over and I ran for the exit.

Next day Katherine came home with her tail between her legs and told me she had lost the stamps, I didn’t offer. Monday morning and a news report said that someone had been shot outside that very same post office, the lengths poor people have to go to get served quicker!

braben’s blog...oscar

I just want a stamp!I’ll be honest, I’ve never won an

Oscar. Have you? I did win a tin of biscuits once in a competition to see who could collect the most milk bottle tops for Blue Peter when I was in the Cubs. I won by a mile-you probably saw my picture in the 9th Fairfield Cubs Newsletter. Just as well I won because since then-nothing!

Shortly after that my Cubs career ended when it became clear that I didn’t know the difference between a bowline on the bite and a sheepshank. Akela told me I’d be useless on a camping trip. He was right! The only time I ever went camping, the tent blew away in the middle of a windy Isle of Man night, the result of zero knot

knowledge and rotten tent putter upper skills.

But back to the Oscars, the reason I was e n q u i r i n g as to the l i ke l i ho o d of you having ever won one in the past was to see if you could

help solve a mystery. I’ve always wondered, what do the winners do with their statuettes when they

get them home? As far as I can tell, and bear in mind here that I’ve never got within touching

distance of one, the Oscar doesn’t seem to serve any useful household purpose. My biscuits for example,

although not having the same glamour as an Oscar,

were enjoyable and once they were eaten, I kept my Lego in the empty tin. Now be honest, will the winner of the Best Director be able to say the same about their Oscar?

I’d like to suggest to the organising committee

that there’s an addition to the whole ceremony, something which would

add some much needed edge-of-the-seatishness to the whole thing. Each nominee must write, in

a sealed envelope, what they’ll do with the Oscar after

the ceremony, if they win. If the scores are level after extra time, this can be used as a tie breaker; each of the envelopes will be opened and the contents read out. After each one, the audience would applaud and a Clapometer, like the one once used by Hughie Green in Opportunity Knocks, records the loudest applause and that decides the winner.

Okay, I’m off to work on those Blue Peter skills to see what I can do with an Oscar and two Squeezy bottles, just in case I win one when I grow up.

Finally, we get to the tablet. The awesome strength of this device is it’s size and capacity. A book of similar size can hold a riveting novel of several hundred pages. The same tablet can hold several hundred riveting novels! It’s point and shoot technology, fragile input / display screen and very restricted multitasking ability prevent it from ever being more than a sophisticated toy.It is a fact that technology shrinks, but

despite that, gets evermore powerful. These are separate but linked factors in the evolution (and I can say that now) of these devices. Science fiction writers have been aware of these levels of usability and portability for as long as there has been science fiction. H.G. Wells was travelling to the moon in 1901 and Gerry Anderson’s ‘Thunderbirds’ in 1964. As a side note, he was investigated by the American and English Military on the possible charge of espionage because of the striking similarity of the puppet driven vehicles and those being envisaged and designed by the military intelligence agencies (did I just use the word intelligence and military in the same sentence?).conclusion, If you want a tablet, get

the best you can afford. If your need is for a laptop, same advice! If you need to do hard processing (video conversion / manipulation, Spreadsheets number crunching of biblical proportions or just have something that can be upgraded after 10 years) get a tower / desktop. For more free telephone advice ring

LEGAL CORNERWITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITORIf you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, pleasee-mail [email protected]

Q. My husband deceased nine months ago in the U.K. with an English will, but no Spanish will. We had a holiday home in Spain in joint names. What do I have to do now?

A. As there is no Spanish will unfortunately it will be necessary to convalidate your husbands U.K. will and probate document for use in Spain.

The first step will be to obtain probate on the U.K. will. When this has been done it will be necessary to have Hague s Apostille affixed to the U.K. documents and then have the translated and stamped by an official translator.

When this has been done your solicitor in Spain will inform you if any further documents need to be obtained for the documents to be acceptable in Spain. (English wills very often refer to trusts, which cause complications and

expense when convalidating for use in Spain).

In this case I am afraid your inheritance tax will be subject to surcharge as the time limit to deal with the tax office in Spain is 6 months unless you request and extension in writing within the first 5 months.

As you and the deceased are non residents of Spain, the inheritance tax is paid in Madrid, but no travelling is needed as your solicitor will have and agent in Madrid who for a very small fee will do the legwork in Madrid under the solicitors instructions.

The expense and timescale of the convalidation for use in Spain of the English documents will depend on the wording of the will.

To avoid complications in the future make sure you instruct your solicitor to prepare a Spanish will for yourself after you have finalized your acceptance of inheritance.

The Spanish deadline for registering an intention to vote in the European Parliamentary elections is Thursday 30th January. If you are a British resident in Spain you can have your say, provided you take action by the deadline.

The Spanish government has provided the following information (translated by the British Embassy) that residents may find useful:

“Applications to express an intention to vote may be carried out in several ways:

- In the case of citizens who received a communiqué from the Electoral Registry Office (Oficina del Censo Electoral) in November 2013, the only requirement is to fill in and sign the formal statement included in the communiqué and then send it to the relevant Regional Delegation of the Electoral Registry Office. In the event the Electoral Registry Office should also have the person’s Foreigner Identification Card Number (NIE), then that person may also go online to express the intention to vote, through the link https://sede.ine.gob.es

- In the case of EU nationals living in Spain but not registered with the local town hall, it is necessary for them to register with their local town hall (padrón municipal) and fill in the relevant form expressing their intention to vote in Spain

“Further information is available at local town halls and regional delegations of

the Electoral Registry Office. Enquiries can also be made by calling 901 101 900 or via the website www.ine.es.

“Residents who have previously expressed their wish to vote in Spain for the European Parliament elections are already included in the electoral roll. Therefore, they do not need to make any further arrangements or paperwork.”

According to Spanish government figures, more than 2.1 million citizens from other EU countries are entitled to vote in Spain. As of last November, 322,000 nationals of other EU countries - 15% of that total - had registered on the Spanish electoral roll.

You can find more information on ‘Elections Abroad’ on the EU website at: http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/residence/elections-abroad/ep-elections/index_en.htm

Alternatively, if you have been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years, you are eligible to vote in the UK as long as you are on the electoral register there. British expatriates can print off a registration form at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and post it to the UK local authority where they were last registered to vote, in time for it to be received by Wednesday 7 May.

When registering as a voter for the European Parliament elections, you will also have to declare that you will only vote once. In a European Parliament election, you can only vote in one country.

Maria Maroto Perez: Solicitor/Barrister - Esther Serrano Saez: Solicitor/Barrister

We are pleased to introduce ourselves MUNDI ABOGADOS SOLICITORS.

We are a multidisciplinary law firm based in Vera (Almería) and as such we deal with many different aspects of law, specialising in litigation, conveyancing, taxation, civil, commercial and fiscal law. Our aim is to provide a personal, quality service, in plain English and to do so promptly, efficiently and in a friendly manner. We will keep you up to date and fully informed throughout and all at a very competitive price. We can also arrange the following if needed:

• Open a Spanish bank account • Connection of utility services• If you are considering renting your house or land we will negotiate

your letting agreement, ensuring that the terms of your contract meet your requirements

• Write your Spanish will• As your Fiscal Representatives, we will assist you in any dealings

with Spanish Tax Office and explain to you all the taxes that you are liable to pay.

For those that become residents of Spain, we can also assist in other legal matters, such as matrimonial issues or business contracts.

legal mattershelp for expats in spain

• A NIE is a tax identification number assigned by the Spanish authorities to any foreigner, whether resident or non-resident, with interests in Spain or who may be contemplating taking certain actions in Spain. • This number identifies you if you: are

going to buy a home in Spain; need to sign a document before a Spanish notary; wish to become a Spanish resident; plan to start a business

in Spain or take shares in, or become a director of, a Spanish company; or are a student registering on a Spanish university course. These are examples only. • You can apply for a NIE

either in Spain or at the Spanish consulate nearest to you in your home country. You’ll need to file an application form and supply personal data, including an address for notifications, and state the reason for your application. You may be asked to supply supporting documentation. A photocopy of your passport – having first shown your original when making your application – is also required.

•Wherever you make your application, it’ll be sent for processing to the police authority in Madrid responsible for issuing NIEs. It usually takes at least two months for them to issue the NIE. So don’t leave getting your NIE to the last minute!•Your NIE will be sent in the form

of a confirmatory letter. Keep it safe (taking a photocopy of it and keeping that photocopy in a separate location). It’s difficult and time consuming to obtain duplicates.• As said, you can also apply for a

NIE in Spain, as long as you’re in the country legally. So if you’re an EU resident you may take advantage of a holiday in Spain to apply for a NIE locally. Contrast with non-EU

residents who can only apply for NIEs in Spain if they prove their presence in the country is legal, either by producing their visa or other authorisation validating their stay. If applying in Spain, note that an appointment must be made and the date given cannot be changed.

how to Buy a property in spain

There are a few things to remember if you’re planning to buy a property in Spain. Firstly, you should get to grips with the full buying process. For example, signing a reservation agreement means you have a set amount of time to pay the full amount (on top of your reservation fee) before you lose the house.

There are several different contract types which may or may not suit you, so be sure to decide exactly what you want from your contract in advance. There are additional fees for the administration process of buying in Spain, and many buyers run into difficulties if they attempt to alter the property without permission or if there is a dispute with the builders, so get everything agreed and signed before you allow any work to happen on your new property.

PAUSE fOR ThOUghT

By lyn aspdenof ‘Strictly dance’

week 4

Dancing on Ice 2014

This weeks theme was different styles of dance and what a diverse show it proved to be. with only 9 pairs remaining one slip and it is all over.

opening the show were ex champion Kyran Bracket and Nina with their version of rock and roll to Great Balls of Fire. For me this week Kyran didn’t look as comfortable and he was a bit unsteady on some of his lift entry and exits. It was however a performance which was fast and furious and full of energy. I awarded him 7.5 and judges 31.5.

next to skate were Susanne Shaw and Matt with The Flower Duet Ballet. Susanne has beautiful arms and lines and her transitions between lifts was seamless. Her interpretation was soft elegant and graceful exactly as it should have been. I gave her 8.5 and the judges 33.0.

next out were Gareth Gates and Brianne with Street Dance to Hot In Here. Oh dear! a person less ‘street’ than Gareth you couldn’t meet, however he gave it his best shot and

really entered into the spirit of the performance. He is not really up to the standard of some of the other skaters but a nice attempt nontheless. I gave him 7.0 and the judges 28.0.

next to skate were Bonnie langford and Andre with a waltz to what The World Needs Now. I found it difficult to believe that the professional skater had never performed a waltz before so Bonnie was immediately on the back foot. The performance was tentative and unsure, not as clean as normal but her elegance and posture and position in lifts is second to none. She needs much more power and speed over the ice to keep up with the serious challengers. She was awarded 27.5 from the judges and 7.0 from myself.

Sam Attwater and Vicky then turned to India and Bangra skated to work for their performance. This was a fast, furious performance full of Bangra movements and well matched through most of their skate. I awarded him 8.5 and the judges 34.5. Next to skate was Zaraah Abrahams and Andy

with a Jazz number to Putting on The ritz. This week she was lacking in performance level looking heavy getting both into and out of lifts probably due to lack of body and arm extension. I awarded her 7.5 and the judges a total of 32.0.

next to skate was Beth Tweddle and lucasz performing Scottish Dancing to Hey Brother. This was nicely performed with good characterisation of Scottish dance moves and hand positions. It was to be the seasons best score (until the following skates) with a total of 36.5 from the judges and 8.5 from me.

The penultimate pair were Hayley Tamaddon and Dan skating charleston to Bang Bang. Wow!! this was a fantastic performance from start to finish, it was fast slick with loads of charleston moves packed in. I gave her a maximum 10.0 with the judges 38.0.

closing this weeks show was my boy ray quinn and Maria dancing Flamenco to Malaguena. Fantastic! Wow! Wow! Everything it should have been and

much much more. It was a slick dramatic skate full of flamenco lifts, poses and shapes and with the power of ray’s dance expertise excellent. ray ended up with a maximum 40.0 from the judges and of course a 10.0 from yours truly.

After the public vote the bottom 2 were: Kyran Bracken skating to chasing cars and Zaraah Abrahams skating to Don’t cry For Me Argentina and this was one of the closest skate offs there has ever been. It was a 3 to 1 split with the judges but Kyran won out so Zaraah sadly had to leave the competition. next week there is to be a ‘winner takes all battle’ but what will this entail? Tune in to find out!

Every week we are getting closer to crowning the ultimate champion but who will it be? ray quinn, my favourite? or do you prefer someone else? until next weeks exciting show - Keep Dancing and don’t forget you can come and join our friendly gang at one of our classes.

sport shortsA friend recently told me she could

never be a christian as the Bible was so unscientific; quoting Richard Dawkins as supporting her view that no reputable scientist over the last century had believed in God. Strange how many people share this view, but clearly they never met Professor David Ingram cBE, one of the greatest and most respected physicists of our time, who also had a strong christian faith.

For myself, I was privileged to attend a symposium at Keele University in the early 60s, when Prof Ingram was head of the Department of Physics there. when at the end of his lecture he invited questions, one mischievous individual enquired how he, as a respected scientist could also claim a faith in God. Unruffled, the professor responded that he considered the two to be complementary; that science sought to answer questions of “how”, whilst the Bible addressed the issue of “why”.

To illustrate the point, Dr Ingram gave a scientific explanation of how his car came to be parked outside the hall, with a detailed analysis based on its speed and weight; its momentum and kinetic energy, being overcome by a gradually increasing frictional force, as hydraulic pressure caused callipers to grip discs attached to the wheels, which brought it to a stop in its present position. He then continued, suggesting that a Biblical approach would probably have simply explained that the Professor stopped his car outside the lecture hall as he was addressing a symposium there.

Both explanations, he asserted were equally true, and both were needed, taken together to understand fully how and why his car was car was parked

outside, “always assuming”, he added with a grin, “that it hasn’t been stolen since I left it there”. So it is that Science and Scripture are equally valid in addressing their own issues, but don’t expect Science to answer accurately questions about the meaning and purpose of life, nor Scripture to explain precisely how it all came into being.

once the applause subsided, there were no further questions.

35www.soltimes.com SOLTIMES JANUARY 2014

viewpointThe door to the vet’s surgery crashed open with a force that tested its shatterproof integrity to the limit, and a small brown missile shot into the reception area. The missile resolved itself into a Spanish lady in a brown coat and a bad mood. Among the verbal grenades that she was firing at top decibel and machine gun speed I gathered that a Renault Clio was in her way – my Renault Clio!Fearing that she would spontaneously combust, I hurried out into the street to move the offending, but innocent, Del.I know that the Spanish fuse can be a short one, and once ignited, can lead to spectacular fireworks, but up until now I have found that the soft answer and a humble apology very effective anti-incendiary measures, so once out in the street I began to explain in Spanish why my car was parked where it was.I would have explained, but she verbally steamrollered over the top of me as we strode

up the street. ‘Why couldn’t you have parked here? Or here?’ she vociferated, without pausing for breath, moderating her volume or giving me time to answer. I would have explained that

the white lines permitted parking, and that at the time that I parked it was the only space available. Unfortunately for me, the cars fore and aft of Del had gone, leaving him in solitary splendour, blocking her driveway.

We reached the object of her wrath, Del, and we stood opposite each other – blond and apologetic was clearly making no impression on dark and volatile with added arm waving. It crossed my mind to point out that, if she would only stop hollering and listen, we would have reached accord by now, Del would have been moved and she would be on her way.

Hard on the heels of that quite reasonable thought came the desire to tell her that if she wasn’t so stingey, she could, for a small fee, get a Vado Permanente sign to stop innocent motorists from mistakenly parking in front of her garage.

I bit the words back; she was so busy shouting that she wouldn’t have heard them anyway. She was 5 foot of unnecessary anger and dangerously high blood pressure, so I calmly began to climb into Del. As I did so I said, in English ‘Oh, shut up!’ in tones of the utmost boredom.

It was not my finest hour, but neither was it hers. But on measure, I think I lost less dignity!

By Jos Biggs [email protected]

not our finest hour

Our American tenants back home have recently been re-posted to another part of the world and it has given us the opportunity to undertake a bit of re-decoration and some other minor items that require attention before our new renters move in at the beginning of February. In the meantime, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at other real estate in that area - just to get an idea on how property prices have changed in the three years since we first purchased. In the process, I came across a couple of houses near the village where we had lived for thirty years and were therefore familiar to me, and the estate agents descriptive jargon for them made me smile. One – a very old almost derelict cottage – carried the appetizing headline: ‘rarely available – viewing essential.’ Yes I thought; that’s because houses

alqueria

des res with many featuresrarely reach this condition without actually falling down, which of course makes the viewing essential before that happens. The other was described as being in a ‘secluded location’. This is definitely true, because not only is it a Tornado fighter flight away from the village centre, but it has no made-up road leading to it and there is not a vehicle made - short of a Caterpillar tractor - that could negotiate the crater like pot holes without taking out the suspension and floor, and possibly the driver. This got me thinking about some of the other estate agent’s lingo that we are familiar with and backed by observation and personal experience over the years, I let my imagination out for the day, and came up with possible interpretations. Most of us know that ‘bijou’ translates as being ideal for Dopey if the other six dwarves threw him out. But what about ‘compact’? Well there is a formula for this and it is simply to divide a bijou by two.‘Scope for improvement’ and ‘in need of modernisation’

can mean anything from complete demolition and starting over, to the fact that it has not been touched since its construction in Boadicea’s day. Then there is ‘far reaching views to the rear’, which usually means no trees; no hills or mountains; definitely no water and on a clear day,

you can just about make out Abu Dhabi. Or ‘open aspect to the rear’ which is often a subtle indication that there is a planning application in the pipeline for a new abattoir or power station. ‘Internal viewing recommended’ is an obvious reference to the fact that it looks God awful on the outside whilst the more general ‘viewing recommended’ is self evident, given that you would never buy a property without looking at the damn thing. Then we come to the enticing ‘easily maintained garden’ description, aka the pocket handkerchief concrete patio along with two window boxes. The other side of the coin is ‘mature gardens’ which I know from bitter experience is a reference to the dense jungle-like flora that has never experienced a lawn mower or machete and could quite easily be home to a tribe of pygmies or wild boar.‘Has a homely feeling’ and ‘decorated in the modern style’ are usually mentioned in tandem and relate to a house that has been furnished in the sixties style and tarted up by an ageing hippy high on magic m u s h r o o m s and strong cider.‘Convenient for the station’ is good, unless

Antonio Poyato, sitting on a low mound is trying to take off his boot. He pulls at it with both hands, panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again.Loco Paco arrives, dust covered and footsore.Paco: Still a long way to go. Shall we travel together?Poyato: Yes, as soon as I take this ruddy boot off and put it on again.Paco surveys the countryside, the Castle of Alqueria is in the far distance.

Paco: It’s a vast wilderness out there, completely devoid of humanity.Poyato: Reminds me of my first wife, although she was a very attractive lady but unfortunately not from the front.Loco Paco stares blankly at Poyato, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in.Poyato: Can you smell burning?Paco: Sorry, indigestion.Poyato: Well? Shall we go?Paco: Yes, let’s go.They do not move.Poyato pulls a hip-flask from his pocket, he offers it to Paco.Poyato: Remitroot Whisky Paco? It keeps the demons at bay.Paco looks around for demons with a worried frown.Paco: I don’t like demons. They are always where you don’t expect them.Poyato: How do those people who don’t drink keep their demons at bay Paco? There are people who don’t drink you know!Paco: I know, I remember reading about them somewhere.Poyato: I don’t like sitting on this mound, nature has a habit of making a mad dash up your trouser leg.Paco: That’s why I wear gaiters and drink Remitroot whisky. Poyato: Well? Shall we go?Paco: Yes, let’s go. They do not move.Poyato: Do you understand life

Paco?Paco: Enough to get by, enough to appear sane if I need anymore I ad-lib.Poyato: That doesn’t make sense Paco.Paco: No nothing does.Paco sighs, a long long sigh.Poyato: You can make a sigh last longer than a Mother-in-Law’s visit.Paco sighsPaco: How long were you married Antonio?Poyato: Four hundred and nine years. Can you remember your first love Paco.Paco: Yes, I still have the receipt.Poyato shielded his eyes and scanned the blueness of the morning sky.Poyato: There is intelligent life out there in space Paco. What do you think?Paco: Well they haven’t bothered to visit us, that must demonstrate a reasonable level of intelligence.Poyato: We aren’t alone you know!Paco: I know, I have my Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy.Poyato stares blankly at Loco Paco, as if someone has forgotten to plug him in.Poyato: Back to Alqueria then?Well? the Bristol to London main line crosses the bottom of your garden. When a room is described as having ‘electrical sockets and a telephone point’, it’s obvious that this is one boring room with no redeeming features that the agent can find worth talking about. And beware of the boast, ‘unusual feature’, because it’s a safe bet that it will be the first thing you rip out and take to the tip when you move in. Similarly the word ‘interesting’, which could easily be interpreted as ‘bizarre’ or ‘weird’. And why say ‘on road parking’ or ‘space for three vehicles’, when all they need state is ‘no garage’ !‘Studio’: a pad where you can sit on

the loo whilst cooking your dinner and taking a shower at the same time. ‘Extended by the present owner’ - probably the same hippy decorator as before - who has built a lean-to shack with no planning permission or building regs. ‘Good use has been made of the available space’ . . . that’s because the attic space and bedrooms have been used as a marijuana farm. It’s that hippy again. And the list goes on in the strange world of realtor speak. And no matter how tough the times or dire the economic situation, they all have ‘clients waiting’ !

Forum Golf Society´s members enjoyed the sort of weather than acts as a strong reminder of one of the main reasons that we all moved to this part of the world when they played a Double Par Medal at Desert Springs on January 24th. Peter Harrington, one of the society´s most supportive players was a very popular winner, leading the way with a net 69 for his maiden individual victory after nearly 5 years of trying !Maurice Jamieson (70)

was second, Tony Morgan (72) third, Terry Moore (73) fourth & Keith Ryder (75) fifth, with the four nearest the pin prizes going to Derek Manning, Phil Miles, Peter Harrington & Maurice Jamieson, and Ian Postles continuing his happy knack of going home with a prize or two by claiming the longest drive on the tricky 16th. This event was also

the tenth (out of twelve) qualifying event for the 2013/14 Ford Leagues, and with four players going through to the regional finals in May the top six of Richard Swaine, Tony Morgan, Phil Elam, Fran Elam, Terry Moore & Peter Tinsley remain unchanged, although the performances of Peter Harrington & Maurice Jamieson saw them move significantly closer towards the top places Forum´s upcoming

our professional quantum re-mapping process enhances and optimises the power of the engine within safe limits, not beyond them. Extra power will also result in fewer gear changes. Manufacturers have to build in a tolerance for the parts in the engine, to manage the effect of wear and tear, production variations, and to ensure their warranty claims during their warranty period, normally 3 years, are kept to a minimum.

Most race and rally engines are pushed for every last horse power, and thus they more common to fail, whilst normal car, van, and lorry engines are limited back, well away from probability of multiple failures. Each individual engine is different as in how much it can be pushed in a remap, but a good remap from a quality tuner will never get close the limits of component failure.

You will see that the top companies within the market place have all developed vehicle improvements to similar outputs. Beware of tuners who claim significantly more: it’s either not true, hoping that the average customer wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, or the engine is being pushed too hard and may become unreliable.

The remap is invisible to manufacturer’s diagnostic equipment. Additionally many forward thinking manufacturers turn a blind eye to a quality remap service, knowing that a properly enhanced vehicle can only ever benefit them.

A preview by Tony MatthewsThis year will see the 65th season of Formula One Grand Prix Motor Racing, which is recognised by the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) as the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars. Twelve teams and (hopefully) 24 drivers will compete in nineteen races for the World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ Championships.Sebastian Vettel starts the season as the defending drivers’ champion after winning his fourth consecutive title last term, while his team, Red Bull Racing, will begin the campaign as the defending Constructors’ Champions, having also won their fourth consecutive championship in 2013.

Calendar Changes• The Russian Grand Prix will take place on a street circuit inside the Sochi Olympic Park.• Red Bull reached an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to revive the Austrian Grand Prix after a ten-year absence. The race will be held at the Red Bull Ring which previously hosted the Austrian Grand Prix in 2003 when the circuit was known as the A1-Ring.• The Bahrain Grand Prix will be a twilight event, under lights, similar to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.• The Hockenheimring returns to host the German Grand Prix.• The Korean, Mexican races and the Grand Prix of America had been included in the provisional calendar published in September 2013, but were later removed from schedule. Also India has missed out this year.technical Regulations• The 2014 season will see the re-introduction of turbocharged engines for the first time since 1988. These will be a 1.6 litre V6 format with an 8-speed semi automatic gearbox.• The rules dictate the use of a 90-degree engine bank with fixed crankshaft and mounting points for the chassis while the engine itself will be limited to 15,000 rpm. Individual engine units under the 2014 specifications, must last for at least 4,000 km (2,500 miles) before being replaced.• All F1 teams can use electronic braking devices to manage the braking of the rear wheels, because

the increased power output from the ERS-K units will make regulating the brake bias a l o t

harder t h a n it had been

previously.• In the interests of safety, new

2014 regulations will allow a lower nose on the front of each car, the tip of which will have to be no more than 185mm above the ground, in comparison to the 550mm allowed before. • In order to promote efficiency, fuel will be flow-restricted to 100 kg/h above 10,500rpm; below 10,500rpm a formula for the maximum flow must be applied based on the rpm in use.• The position of the exhaust outlet can now be angled upwards, towards the rear wing instead of downwards to face the rear diffuser, making the practice of using exhaust blown diffusers extremely difficult to achieve.• The minimum weight of a F1 car has increased from 642 kg (1,420 lb) to 690 kg (1,500 lb).• The use of false camera mountings is banned. Teams had previously exploited a loophole in the regulations, allowing them to add additional pieces of bodywork to the car in the place of camera mountings and take advantage of the aerodynamic benefits. This loophole has now been closed, with the regulations rewritten to only allow camera mountings to be used for cameras.Sporting Regulations• Mid-season car testing is back. Four European venues will each host a two-day test in the week following the Grand Prix held a chosen circuit.• The end-of-season ‘Young Driver’ Tests have been discontinued.• The penalty system has been overhauled, so as to improve driving standards, with the introduction of a ‘penalty points’ system for driving offences which will carry a pre-determined points value based on their severity. These points will be tallied up over the course of the season, with a driver receiving a race ban after accumulating 12 penalty points.• Any driver who received a race ban will also receive an additional five penalty points on his return to the track - a form of probation if you like, to discourage further driving offences. All points will remain on a driver’s licence for 12 months.• Race stewards will have the power to hand out five-second penalties - including a drive-through. • A car will be allowed five engine changes during 2014 (it was eight last year). Each engine must be divided into individual elements, including the turbocharger, ERS unit and KERS battery.• If a driver receives a grid penalty for engine abuse, he will go to the back of the grid and the penalty will be carried over to the next race. For example: if a driver qualifies in 19th position and receives a five-place grid penalty, he will drop to 22nd and last place for that race, and then receive an additional two-place penalty in the next Grand Prix. • After the incidents involving tyres during 2013, which resulted in a string of explosive blow-outs,

especially at the British Grand Prix, the FIA has passed a resolution granting

the teams the power to change the specifications of the tyres with immediate effect should the need

arise.• The pit lane speed limit has been reduced from 100 km/h (62 mph) to 80 km/h (50 mph).• The initial free practice session before each Grand Prix will

now run for two hours (not 90 minutes). And an extra set of tyres will only be available for the first thirty minutes of the session, to encourage more running during free practice.• If a driver does not complete a full qualifying session, he will be assigned a grid position based on the average time of his practice laps - meaning he could start the race in 9th or 10th place.• The FIA has also introduced the ‘Pole Trophy’ - a non-championship award presented

to the driver who qualifies on pole for the most races.• The final race of the season will offer double points to drivers in a bid to keep the championship fight alive for longer.Sit, watch and enjoy, it will be another interesting year of Formula One racing… and once again, the German superstar Sebastian Vettel is red-hot favourite with the bookies to win his fifth title in a row. I will think he’ll be there or thereabouts. His Red Bull team is simply the best.

motoring Famous movie cars: the history of herbie & the Batmobile

They’re among the sirens of the silver screen. Watching them in action is likely to make your heart race and your energy surge, or maybe spark feelings of nostalgia.

We’re not talking about beautiful leading ladies. We’re talking cars from movies, some of the most famous being Herbie, the Batmobile and the DeLorean from “Back to the

Future.” You know them from their featured roles, but where are these hot rods now?

Herbie, a race car, was the primary character in a series

of disney movies, starting with “The Love Bug,” released in 1969. in his debut film, Herbie found his way to an over-the-

hill race driver played by dean Jones six Herbie movies were produced

between 1969 and 2005.

herbieVehicle vitals:

■ Type of vehicle ■ Herbie was a 1963

Volkswagen Beetle painted pearl white, although Beetles from the 1950s

through the 1970s were also modified to act as Herbie throughout the films. Herbie’s original engine had a mere 40 horsepower.■ How Herbie was created ■ The iconic Volkswagen Beetle was chosen by the crew on the film. According to the producers, the crew tinkered with several cars. The decision to choose the Beetle was quickly made when crew members’ initial reaction was to reach out and pet the cute looking vehicle.■ Many modifications were made to the Beetles that played Herbie. For instance, the interior was painted gray instead of the standard-issue white to reduce camera glare. Also, due to the small engine and need for the car to race and perform tricks, crews replaced the original powertrain with more high performance engines.■ No Volkswagen logos appeared in the “The Love Bug” because Disney didn’t have permission to use the name. Volkswagen logos did appear in subsequent films.■ Where Herbie is now ■ There were multiple versions of Herbie, including those that appeared on screen and some that were specially designed for Disney parades. They are now scattered all over the world, owned by museums and private collectors.

theBatmoBile

This famous movie car has

gone through many evolutions since its first

appearance in the Batman comic strip of the 1930s. As TV direc-tors, film producers and subsequent

comic book illustrators interpreted the story of Batman, they each added their own spin to his signature vehicle. The original 1960s TV show featured an aggressive version of a large sedan. Tim Burton’s film franchise, which launched in the 1980s, showcased a Batmobile with machine guns and a defense shield. By the 2000s, the Batmobile more closely resembled a heavily armored military vehicle. It carried more firepower and even had an ejection pod.

Vehicle vitals:■ Type of vehicle ■ The first Batmobile built for the 1960s TV show began as the 1955 Lincoln Futura, a concept car. The shark-like Futura featured an angular front end and extreme tail fins.■ How the Batmobile was created ■ Like many concept cars, the Futura was so costly and extravagant that nothing ever came of it. The prototype ended up in the garage of George Barris, a custom car builder. He was known in Hollywood for his work on custom cars and happened to get the call when the television series “Batman” was green lighted in 1966. He had only three weeks to complete the car, so he turned to the aggressive-looking Futura. By adding bat-like ac-cents and some black and red paint, it was ready in time.■ Where the Batmobile is now ■ The original Batmobile is on display at the Cayman Motor Museum on the island of Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.

Three-time le Mans 24-hours winner Allan Mcnish has joined the BBc’s F1 team for the forthcoming 2014 season. Mcnish will co-commentate for radio 5 live at 15 races and provide expert analyst across TV, radio and online. The Scot, who drove for Toyota in the 2002 F1 season, made his debut in the BBc commentary box last year.

“we’re delighted Allan is on board in an expanded role. His experience and expertise is an invaluable addition,” said BBc head of F1 Ben Gallop. Mcnish, 44, is one of the most respected names in the world of motorsport and worked as F1 co-commentator alongside James Allen for radio 5 live in the 2013 season.

He combined his media role alongside his driving, where he won his third le Mans 24-hours race and rounded off the year by winning the FIA world Endurance championship. After a 25-year career in motorsport, the three-time British karting champion retired in December.

Mcnish will be using his extensive experience from across all areas of motorsport to steer audiences through the intricacies of the forthcoming season, which promises to be a fascinating one with all the technical changes ahead. “now that I have hung up my racing helmet, I am really looking forward to joining the BBc team again for what I am sure is going to be a fantastic new F1 season,” he said.

“with so many technical rule changes, as well as team and driver movements, there will be lots of things happening on and off track for the BBc team to bring to you”.

chief analyst Eddie Jordan and ex-Mclaren driver and pundit David coulthard both return and Suzi Perry resumes her duties as TV anchor for 2014 after her first season at the helm last year. Ben Edwards once again leads the commentary on TV with Lee McKenzie and Tom Clarkson bringing all the news from the pit lane.

on radio 5 live, Allen leads the coverage as F1 correspondent and commentator with Jennie Gow as F1 presenter and pit lane reporter. BBc one and BBc one HD will show nine races live on TV, including Silverstone, canada, Monza and Spa, as well as the season finale from Abu Dhabi, with extended highlights programmes of the remaining races. This goes the same for practice and qualifying.

Every Grands Prix of the season will be live on BBc radio 5 live or 5 live sports extra with live coverage of practice and qualifying. Plus all the action, news, reviews via the BBc Sport app and the BBc Sport website, with Andrew Benson as chief F1 writer.

Full details of the BBc’s 2014 coverage will be announced in due course.
