SpAIN SEEkS fuRTHER GIBRALTAR TALkS WITH ukLooking to defuse a diplomatic row that flared up last month

over Gibraltar, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has written to his British counterpart, William Hague, proposing a new framework for discussing issues concerning the territory.

According to a report by El Pais, Spain’s current government rejects the tripartite forum set up under Socialist PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, which gave equal status to Gibraltar, Spain and the UK.

García-Margallo said Thursday that he had proposed to Hague a “method of working” that would set an “agenda and the composition of ad-hoc groups to resolve conflict.”

Hague proposed something along those lines in April of last year, with all the relevant authorities concerned to be involved in resolving issues such as fishing rights and environmental protection measures.

SpAIN CuTS OVERSEAS fOREIGN AID

Jesus Garcia, Spain’s secretary of state for International Cooperation commented yesterday how Spain is switching the focus on its foreign aid programs from funding various projects financially, to providing an exchange of knowledge.

Tumbit.com reports that the Secretary, who is also responsible for Spain’s relationship with Latin America, admitted that the ‘revision’ was largely due to the country’s ongoing economic pressures, but that foreign aid must be subject to austerity, along with other areas of public spending.

“Spain has been very generous over the past 20 years across the entire region - we have contributed €9 billion in aid to Latin America, and the region that has benefited most is Central America,” he said during an official visit to Costa Rica.

“Now and in the future we’re in an austerity process that forces us to find other kinds of foreign aid, perhaps with fewer economic resources but with the same enthusiasm,” he continued.

Garcia went explain that Spain will speak with other Foreign Governments who have previously received financial aid to see if they can be helped in more practical ways.

“Spanish foreign aid will now be based more on the exchange of knowledge, know-how and experience than on providing funds,” he said.

With so many people in Spain living below the poverty line and with public funding being cuts in so many essential services such as Healthcare and Education, the question must surely be why this has not been addressed before now.

MuRCIA TERMINATES AEROMuR’S CORVERA AIRpORT CONTRACTLast Friday’s meeting of

the Regional Government of Murcia has approved the proposal put forward by the Ministry of Public Works to terminate Aeromur’s contract to operate Corvera International Airport.

According to a report by ABC, In a press conference earlier this afternoon Minister of Public Works, Antonio Sevilla, confirmed that the decision had been made in the interests of ensuring that the airport was was open “in the shortest possible time”, and so not to cause “further damage to the interests of Murcia”.

The proposal to end Aeromur’s contract was first proposed in last Friday’s meeting, although the decision was deferred until

today.

Speaking to the press, Sevilla went on to cite the concession holder’s inability to comply with the correct permissions, and apply for the appropriate licences to operation the airport, causing extensive delays.

Moving forward, the

Regional Government will invite new tenders for contracts to operate the airport. Such contracts need to be in place by a deadline of 31st of December if the “Guaranteed” deadline for Corvera Airport to be operational by Summer 2013 is to be achieved.

SpAIN ExpECTS 3.7% MORE pASSENGER

ARRIVALS THIS WINTER

Airlines have scheduled a total of 81 Million passenger seats with Spain’s airports for the Winter 2013-2014 period (27th October - 28th March) - up 3.7% on the previous season.

According to a report by AENA, by individual airports Madrid-Barajas will welcome over on-quarter of all passengers at 21% - increasing 1.9% on last year. Barcelona-El Prat will see over 16 Million passengers, up 5%, Malaga-Costa del Sol expects to grow 10% with 4 Million passengers.

The Costa Blanca’s Alicante-Elche airport is predicted to see an increase in passenger numbers of 13.4% at 3.5 Million.

A further increase in capacity has been scheduled for Tenerife Sur (5 Millions, +16.3%), Tenerife Norte (2 Million, +6,3%), Gran Canaria (6 Million, +13%), Fuerteventura (2 Million, +14.7%) and Lanzarote (2.5 Million, +20.8%). The total number of flights scheduled for the Winter 2013/2014 period is set to exceed 500’000, or 0.5%.

fMI fACT-fINDING MISSION IN SpAIN WILL LEAVE NO HIGH-STREET BANkING STONE uNTuRNED

A fact-finding mission to Spain by the International Monetary Fund (FMI) will start by scrutinising the operations of Bankia, Unicaja and Liberbank, say sources from the entity led by Christine Lagarde.

According to a report by ThinkSpain, following a meeting on Monday at the Bank of Spain for the start of its fourth on-site inspection of the country’s financial institutions, representatives of the FMI have started delving into the effects on these high-street banks’ results caused by refinancing their credits, and whether credit is flowing into the Spanish economy. Unless the previous three institutions need more analysis, the FMI will move onto Novacaixagalicia, or NCG; Cajamar; Bankinter, and Banco Popular. Wednesday will see the finance giant inspecting Caja3, Ibercaja and Ceiss.

Few banks will escape a thorough investigation, since the FMI will meet with representatives of CatalunyaCaixa, Banco Sabadell, Kutxabank – formerly the Bilbao-Bizkaia Kutxa (BBK), and Banco Santander on Thursday, and on Friday, with Caixabank, the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) and the BMN before returning back to base.

The BMN has presented a restructure plan to the FMI in order to reduce its overheads by 55 per cent, down to 375 million euros, over the course of the year 2014. It has already

cut staff numbers by 52 pr cent – to 4,189, of whom 2,000 have been relocated to the Banco Sabadell – after selling off its branches in Catalunya and Aragón for 336.6 million euros.

The FMI’s findings will be published on September 30.

Next Monday, September 23 will see the European Central Bank (BCE) and European Commission (EC) joining the FMI in Spain to evaluate the country’s bank bail-out programme. The three entities, which make up the Troika, is due to make one final mission to Spain in the autumn before concluding its programme of 100 billion euros supplied to the country in July 2012 at the end of this year.

Spain has so far only used 40 per cent of the funds supplied to repair its high-street banks. But since the financial services restructure plan started in May 2009, the State has already spent over 61 billion euros on Spanish banks.

Minister for the economy Luis de Guindos has denied rumours that his European counterparts have been putting him under pressure to prolong the bail-out fund programme, and says formal decisions in this respect will be taken by November 2013 at the latest.

Spain will not take part in any military incursion into Syria ‘under any circumstances’, says foreign affairs minister José Manuel García-Margallo.

According to a report by ThinkSpain, during a Parliamentary congress held last Wednesday – which was two hours late starting because recent rainfall had left it with a dripping ceiling – the head of Spanish diplomacy abroad said a raid on the Middle Eastern country would be ‘against Article 19 of the Law of Defence’, although he did not state on which point.

President Mariano Rajoy has already come under fire from the opposition for having signed a pact along with the USA and the rest of the G20 refusing to condone Syria’s chemical weapons attacks, claiming that ‘clear evidence’ pointed to their being the work of the régime of Bashar Al-Assad, and agreeing on ‘severe international action’ in retaliation.

As a result, Rajoy was due to speak in Parliament today, the first session after the summer break, but declined to do so in the end and handed the reins to Margallo.

Stating that ‘a chemical weapons attack cannot be left without a response’, the foreign minister said Spain would adhere to the advice of the UN’s Security Council with the aim of ensuring that ‘nobody, ever again, under any circumstances’ will be able to repeat the atrocities seen in

Syria, which left over 1,000 adults and 400 children – all civilians – gassed to death in a suburb of the capital, Damascus.

Margallo added that the ‘window of opportunity’ provided by Russia’s suggestion that Syria puts its arsenal of chemical bombs under international control had come about as a result of consultation between the northern Euroasian nation and the French, Germans and British.

The first Parliamentary session of the new ‘term’ saw numerous heated arguments as each minister spoke, with the socialists slamming education leader José Ignacio Wert’s student grant restrictions as ‘cruel’ and ‘making university out of bounds to all but the very wealthy’, and justice minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón attracting outrage over the proposed abortion law reform, due out in October, on the grounds that it would restrict women’s rights to a level not seen since before the Civil War.

And the socialists have already said that as soon as they are back in government, their first action will be to abolish the PP’s labour reform, designed to create employment by making it easier and cheaper to fire staff rather than, as the PSOE believes would have more effect, making it easier and cheaper for firms to take on new employees and keep existing ones.

SpAIN RuLES OuT SyRIA INVASION AS ‘ILLEGAL’ uNDER NATIONAL LAW

BuLLfIGHT pROTESTERS STORM MADRID

Nearly 15,000 people protested at the weekend in Madrid over one of Spain’s most famous bull-fighting exhibitions, the Toro de la Vega.

Although previous demonstrations have taken place in the town of Tordesillas, in the Valladolid province, in the northern part of central Spain, the organisers wanted more visibility and so have chosen to move to the capital.

Members of the Partido Animalista – an animal rights independent political party which as yet has no representation in the central government – say both the right-wing PP and the left-wing PSOE are ‘responsible’ for the ‘cruel and barbaric’ act of the Toro de la Vega.

The PP is in government in the region of Castilla y León, and the PSOE in the town of Tordesillas.

“It’s time to address both parties directly and hold them accountable for the cruelty which is about to take place on Tuesday,” said a spokeswoman for

the Partido Animalista.

Demonstrators snapped a lance in half – the type used to spear bulls in the ring – as they read out manifestos in front of the PP headquarters on the C/ Génova and the socialists’ central office on the C/ Ferraz in the capital.

They called the Toro de la Vega ‘an iconic display of animal cruelty’ and said it is one of the most ‘savage and brutal’ of its type in Spain.

Several Spanish celebrities either took part in or endorsed the demonstration, including actress Beatriz Rico, author Soledad Puértolas, and TV presenter María Valverde.

The latter said the Toro de la Vega was ‘downright shameful’ and should be at the top of the government’s in-tray for issues to resolve.

But the Partido Animalista says they doubt whether either the left or the right will bother taking action ‘unless and until it affects their own interests’.

Telecommunications giant Movístar plans to wipe out lock-in penalty clauses in its mobile phone contracts, leaving customers free to chop and change suppliers as they please.

Press reports indicate that a recent drive towards eliminating fixed periods that force customers to pay a fee to release themselves from a given operator means companies are beginning to see they are a barrier to client loyalty.

Jazztel is currently offering to pay up to 200 euros towards the lock-in penalty if customers break their contracts with other suppliers to move to them.

Orange continues to keep customers on a long-term contract with a release penalty, but with a points system meaning new mobile handsets or other related equipment can be purchased with a hefty discount or free of charge when enough are accumulated.

Movístar, in the meantime, plans to offer unlimited calls to customers on the highest mobile tariffs and to retail handsets not linked to them as operators.

Bosses at Telefónica España, the Movístar holding company, say they have realised contract release penalties may force existing customers to stay with them, but they put new customers off who do not want to have to commit to a given supplier long-term.

Prices of olive oil can vary by up to 64.2 per cent, according to leading consumer’s union FACUA. They analysed and compared price tags of 54 brands in six supermarket and hypermarket chains, encompassing 165 products in plastic bottles or tins of a litre or five litres, and the varieties of extra-virgin, virgin, intense, and light olive oil.

According to a report by ThinkSpain, the average price as at August 29 this year for a bottle of extra-virgin was 3.75 euros for a plastic litre bottle, or 3.33 euros per litre in a five-litre bottle, rising to 4.50 in tin containers of five litres.

Virgin olive oil figures for the same types of container cost 3.70 and 3.10 euros respectively.

‘Light’ olive oil – so-described because of its taste, not its calorie content – is

3.22 euros a litre in plastic litre bottles or 2.91 euros per litre in five-litre bottles, whilst ‘intense’ olive oil is 3.15 and 3.03 euros respectively.

For extra-virgin oil, prices per litre vary from 2.99 to 4.58 euros depending upon the brand, or in tin containers, from 2.65 to 4.35 euros.

‘Light’ oils vary by up to 1.12 euros per litre in small containers or 1.35 euros in large ones, and ‘intense’ oils from 1.23 euros to 1.18 euros respectively.

Differences in price of the same brands of extra-virgin, virgin, light or intense olive oil vary by as much as 64 cents, 88 cents, 18 cents and 88 cents, in that order.

The overall average price of olive oil per litre bottle has gone up by 56 cents, and in five-litre bottles by 59 cents a litre, since last year, says FACUA.

hard drive was wiped just six days after he went to prison by the PP, according to IT forensics investigating the two laptops he kept in his office at the party’s headquarters.

Bárcenas was remanded in custody on June 27 and the hard drive of his Apple laptop was formatted on July 3, deleting all the data at source.

The second computer, a Toshiba, had no disc.

Just 12 days later, the former senator and treasurer of the PP effected a sensational about-turn and went from denying everything about alleged undeclared accounts and bribes from companies to telling judge Pablo Ruz every last detail. He had reported the laptops stolen in April, believing the PP was responsible for this, and later attempted legal action against the party for unfair dismissal.

The same month, a judge threw both cases out, and the PP claimed that after this it was legally obliged to wipe the hard drives ‘as any company does when a member of staff leaves’, in accordance with

the Data Protección Law. But in practice, they did not do so for another three months, when the situation began to close in on the PP and see them backed into a corner.

They continue to deny that any of their members has ever received substantial wage top-ups in undeclared cash, or that they accepted hefty bribes from companies in exchange for giving them lucrative public works contracts.

Bárcenas’ secretary Estrella Domínguez, who worked for the treasurer for ‘several decades’ according to the case notes, was called to testify as a

witness and admitted to the judge that she had destroyed the visitors’ book in use at the time.

Her boss had given her these to safeguard when the infamous Gürtel corruption trial hit the headlines and Bárcenas became implicated.

When the cash wages and bribe case news broke, Bárcenas’ wife, Rosalía Iglesias – who also faces money-laundering and tax fraud charges – asked Sra Domínguez for the visitors’ books, but she had already disposed of them.

But Bárcenas’ lawyer, Javier

Gómez de Liaño, said judge Ruz had copies of the pages.

Bárcenas’ predecessor Álvaro Lapuerta’s secretary, Rosa María López Meriner, testifying on the same day, said she had also destroyed the visitors’ books from when Lapuerta was treasurer.

When quizzed about whether certain named companies had visited the PP headquarters’ treasury department, Sra López Meriner said she did not remember, but that she did indeed recall the alleged ring-leader of the Gürtel case, Francisco Correa, having signed into the visitors’ book.

EARLy RETIREMENT RISES By 71 pER CENTWITH AN ESTIMATED QuARTER Of A MILLION NEW pENSIONERS By 2014

Workers who have retired since the start of the financial crisis have increased in number by 71 per cent as a result of mass redundancies and uncertainty about the future, according to the ministry of employment.

The improbability of finding another job for those already in their 60s, the fear of losing their existing one, and lack of work for the self-employed contributed hugely to the number of people who decided to collect their State pensions early, even though they knew they would receive less money.

And large national and multi-national firms which made hundreds or even thousands of staff members redundant en bloc offered early retirement packages to older workers where possible to soften the blow, instead of laying off younger, working-age employees who would face hardship through not being able to find another job for months or years.

ThinkSpain reports that high-street banks have been among the firms with the highest redundancy figures, and many – including La Caixa and Banco Santander – agreed lay-off packages with workers over 55 or 60 allowing them to retire on a pension of 80 per cent of their salary until they reached 65 and could claim on the one from the State.

The statistics show that since the end of 2007 – a year when 148,760 people began claiming their State retirement pension and an average of 12,396 a month ceased work for good – retirees have increased by nearly double.

So far this year, a total of 21,256 people

have been retiring on average per month and in the first half of 2013, the number of new pensioners reached 127,540 – which, if the trend continues, will mean 255,080 new retirees in 2013 alone.

With high costs of contribution to the Social Security system and high income tax, nearly twice as many workers in their 60s have decided to cut their losses and claim their pension, meaning they will no longer have to pay into the system, says leading union, the Labourers’ Commission (CCOO).

They say mass redundancies in firms are affecting all sectors and in 2013 alone, nearly 200,000 workers have already lost their jobs, a rise of 2.1 per cent on the same period in 2012.

Industries which have all but collapsed since the start of the financial crisis – especially construction – have seen high numbers of early retirees.

But the government, in an attempt to reduce the number of workers collecting their pensions early and in a bid to save the Social Security pot 4.9 billion euros, has toughened up requisites for taking early retirement.

Now, instead of being able to choose an early, if reduced State pension from the age of 61, workers have to wait until they are 63.

They also need to have been contributing to the Social Security system for the equivalent of 35 years on full-time hours, reduced on a pro-rata basis for part-time workers.

Expatriates returning from living overseas are finding it increasingly difficult to get a mortgage, with some lenders suggesting they wait 2 to 3 years. This is particularly difficult for those who have spent their time in a foreign country saving up with the express purpose of returning with a strong deposit, but are finding their hopes are dashed.

The report, featured in Expatriate Healthcare (www.tumbit.com) finds that from the lender’s point of view, a potential house buyer who has been living abroad does not have a track record in the UK to vouch for their credentials.

Three years of address history is needed to run a satisfactory credit check through reference agencies and most expats will not have this, reports the Telegraph.

David Hollingworth, director at London & Country, told the news provider: “It’s a case of looking at the individual circumstances of the case and a lot will come down to how much of a footprint the borrower has and therefore whether they will pass the credit score.”

Expats thinking of returning to the UK and buying property can help

their cause by maintaining both a bank account and a credit card at home for the duration of their time away.

This will minimise the amount of time needed to establish a track record once they are back in the UK, although it is worth remembering that mortgage lending criteria is not set in stone.

Mr Hollingworth added: “Overall I would say that being back in the UK for at least 6 months would give a better chance especially if there have been some UK accounts maintained, perhaps at a parent’s address for example.

“A bigger deposit and a good income will also do no harm at all.”

Santander, Nationwide and Barclays all look at applications on their individual merits, making them good avenues to go down for expats finding it hard to secure a mortgage.

Unfortunately the situation is getting more difficult for returning expats in a similar way to that of those who are living abroad, with very few lenders accepting applications from those based overseas.

In a message of support and celebration, UK Prime Minster David Cameron has praised the enormous dignity shown by the people of Gibraltar on their national day.

Speaking via video link, Cameron said the government and people of Britain “stand with you now” over mounting pressure exerted by its Iberian neighbour Spain.

“Gibraltar has been British for 300 years. Let’s keep it that way” he added.

Tumbit.com reports that the National Day of Gibraltar commemorates the anniversary of the first referendum on British Citizenship held on the tiny overseas territory, in which an overwhelming 99% majority voted to remain British.

“Britain and Gibraltar have a long and proud history. For 300 years we have stood together, as one with our shared sovereign. Today your flag flies over the Foreign Office in London” Cameron said.

“On this Gibraltar National Day, the British Government wholeheartedly supports your right to determine your political future. As I have said before, we will never agree to any transfer of sovereignty - or even start a process of negotiation of sovereignty - without your consent. And I wouldn’t want us ever to go down that route. Gibraltar has been British for 300 years. Let’s keep it that way.”

Following months of tight border controls by Spanish border authorities, a team of EU inspectors are due to visit the frontier between Spain and Gibraltar following a

request from David Cameron himself.

The latest spat was triggered after Gibraltar dropped concrete blocks into territorial waters to promote reef life and replenish depleted fish stocks. A move which Spain vehemently denies claiming it was solely to prevent Spanish fishermen from fishing there.

Since the current PP conservative Spanish government came to power in 2011, relations between Gibraltar and Spain came crashing down after Rajoy ceased trilateral discussions and instead insisted only speaking with London. Incursions into Gibraltar territorial waters by Spanish Naval vessels also began.

Eager to calm tensions and the rhetoric coming out of Madrid, Mr Cameron said: “As we celebrate today, let us all remember that Spain is our neighbour and thousands of Spanish people are welcomed by you to work in Gibraltar. I know many of you have close family and friends in Spain. The world is an unstable place; Gibraltar is not.”

It has been widely accepted by worldwide political powers, nations and social media that Spain’s aggression towards Gibraltar is a diversionary tactic to steer the attention of the Spanish public away from its economic problems and corruption scandals which have engulfed the Spanish government and in particular Spanish Prime Minster Mariano Rajoy himself.

WORLD’S OLDEST MAN, A SpANISH ExpATRIATE IN THE uSA, DIES AGED 112The world’s oldest man, Salustiano ‘Shorty’ Sánchez, has

died at the age of 112.

Born in El Tejado de Béjar in the Salamanca province, in western Spain, ‘Shorty’ moved to New York State in the early 1930s where he lived at the time of his death on Friday this week.

He emigrated to Cuba at age 17 – in 1918 – where he worked for two years in the sugar cane plantations before heading to Lynch, Kentucky, via Ellis Island, to work as a miner.

Son of Serafín and Baldomera, ‘Shorty’ moved to the Niagara Falls area at around the age of 30 and then married Pearl Chiasera, who would turn out to be the love of his life, in April 1934.

Shorty and Pearl, who died in 1988, had three children who have given Shorty seven grandchidren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He worked for Scrufari Construction Company and then moved to Union Carbide Company, where he remained for 30 years until he retired.

The elderly gentleman was a member of the Spanish Citizens’ Club in Niagara Falls and right up to his recent death, remained very active, naming his hobbies as gardening, playing cards with friends, and crosswords.

Shorty entered the Guinness Book of Records on July 25 this year as the oldest man in the world, following the death of Japan’s Jiroemon Kimura, who passed away 13 days earlier at the age of 116.

The Spaniard was not the oldest person in the world, though, since the oldest woman, Misao Okawa, also from Japan, is still alive at 115

HEALTH MINISTER SEEkS DOCTORS’ AND NuRSES’ SuGGESTIONS ON HOW TO CuT WAITING LISTS AND INCREASE EffICIENCy

Health minister Ana Mato has met with doctors and nurses from most of Spain’s federal regions and pledged to work with them to reduce waiting lists.

A report by ThinkSpain stated that in a meeting in Barcelona with representatives from the medical profession from all regions except the northern communities of Asturias and Cantabria, the southern region of Andalucía, and the Spanish-owned cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast, Mato called for health workers’ suggestions as to how to run the service more efficiently.

Urging the 17 regions in Spain to work with her – and in particular, their health workers – Ana Mato agreed to leave it up to doctors to prioritise patients when attempting to address the ever-growing waiting lists for consultations and operations in public hospitals.

She told reporters at a later press conference that the regional health minister for Andalucía did not attend the Barcelona meeting because she had only just taken over the role, following the election of Andalucía’s new president Susana Díaz this

week, and that her counterpart in Cantabria could not be there because she was cutting the red tape on a newly-opened hospital.

Mato could not say why the ministers for Asturias, Ceuta and Melilla did not attend.

She intends to call another meeting with the health authorities from all regions, who will be accompanied by doctors and nurses, in October to view the nation’s progress amid the government’s own healthcare reforms.

Catalunya’s regional health department leader, Boi Ruiz, said the issues of doctors’ and nurses’ qualifications and careers, waiting lists and more efficient health centre management had already been under scrutiny for some time in the north-eastern territory, but complained that the proposed pact Ana Mato presented did not address the lack of financial compensation for Catalunya when paying relocation costs for nurses travelling to the region to work from other parts of Spain.

A Royal Decree covering healthcare was due to approve the creation of a nurse’s relocation expenses fund, but this has not yet been dealt with, Ruiz concluded.

guests taking part in an X x y + Z competition. it was a lovely sunny day but there was quite a breeze that resulted in scores being lower than usual.

The winners were sylvia Green, John andrew, Cynthia Witham, and leslie somlyai with a score of 114. a very low compared with the last two similar competitions where the winners scored 130 and 120.

last place and chocolates went to Jacqui mays, michelle Flynn, aly macmillan (guest) and pat davis (guest) with a score of 95 points. This led to Jacqui complaining that she only comes last when there are cherry chocolates that she doesn’t like. however she felt more like a winner when michelle swapped Jacqui’s chocolates for her bottle of cava. Two bottles of cava made her feel much better.

CyCLISTS CALL fOR TOuGHER pENALTIES fOR CARELESS DRIVERSA two-wheeled demonstration on Sunday

calling for stiffer criminal sanctions for drivers who run down cyclists saw 1,200 riders taking part – some from as far away as Dénia (Alicante).

The protesters rode a 35-kilometre circle starting and finishing in Pedrajas de San Esteban (Valladolid province) in a rally organised by the town’s cycling club in memory of two of their members who died after being knocked over by a drunk driver.

Sergio García Herrero and Diego García Capa, both aged 32, lost their lives on July 28 on the CL-602 minor road in the village of Olmedo (Valladolid province), and the motorist who had ploughed into them was found to be over the alcohol limit.

Sergio’s sister Raquel read a manifesto in the Plaza Mayor of the village at the

end of the rally, addressed to the central government’s traffic department and the ministry of justice, calling for ‘tougher sanctions and sentences’ for drivers who were careless around cyclists on the roads.

The time had come, she stated, to take serious action to ensure such tragedies did not continue to occur.

She said road safety education was sorely lacking and that bikers should be free to exercise their sport – or chosen means of transport – in secure conditions.

The mayors of four towns, including those of Olmedo, where the two young men were killed, and Pedrajas de San Esteban itself, were present at the reading of the manifesto at the end of the 35-kilometre ride.

SpANISH BuSINESS SHOWS SIGNS Of IMpROVEMENTLeading trade companies in Spain reported

improvements, economic newspaper Expansion reported on Monday.

Trading companies such as El Corte Ingles, Ikea, Mango, Cortefiel, Dia and Eroski saw this summer the first signs of improvement within the Spanish economy because of an increase in their sales, when compared with the same period of 2012.

After 37 months of decline in domestic demand in the country, Expansion reported, these companies said the demand improved since the summer and they expected an increase in sales in the second half of 2013 when compared with the same period of last year.

According Expansion, the second half of 2012 was one of the worst periods for the Spanish economy after the government had increased IVA by 3 points and lowered wages of officials, which along with high

unemployment, undermined Spaniards’ purchasing power.

Despite the optimism, companies are prudent because the economic situation is tough and consumer confidence is considerably below the level considered as optimistic.

The CEO of Cortefiel (Spanish textile company), Juan Carlos Escribano, said “overall sales in the summer showed a slight recovery, a trend that could consolidate in the coming months.” Textile companies highlighted the positive impact of extending opening hours, areas and days, which gave shops more freedom to sell.

Meanwhile, the Ibex-35 stock market in Madrid rose by 0.65% on Monday closing time, while Spain’s risk premium fell to 248 points, when the Spanish stock market reached the highest level for the 4th consecutive time in a year.

HOW HypNOTHERApy IS HELpING pATIENTS BEAT IBS

Hypnotherapy to encourage positive thinking could help people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the new approach uses a technique often known as positive visualisation and it can involve patients imagining the digestive system as a river.

A study last year at Manchester University found three-quarters of IBS patients experienced improvement in their symptoms after hypnotherapy, and the effects lasted for five years or more.

But the researchers say many sufferers are being denied the treatment because of prejudice

‘Sadly many health professions are sceptical,’ says Professor Peter Whorwell, who pioneered the treatment at Manchester.

He adds: ‘It works for people who are quite ill and who have not responded to other treatments.’

IBS, which is experienced by ten to 15 per cent of the population, affects the digestive system and can cause stomach cramps, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea.

Its cause is not known. Treatments include diet changes, laxatives and anti-depressants.

The hypnotherapy treatment involves weekly sessions for three months, during which patients are given suggestions about how they can gain control over their gut.

‘They might be imagining their gut as a river, for example,’ says Prof Whorwell, ‘and modifying its flow according to their needs – a fast-flowing stream being slowed down to a gently meandering river, or the reverse for someone suffering from constipation.’

One patient to have benefited is Joanna Cowdrey, 31, a supermarket manager from Southampton, who began having bowel problems six years ago.

Joanna tried various kinds of medication, but none reduced the symptoms – until she was invited to have hypnotherapy at Manchester University.

She says: ‘There were no swinging watches like in films – you just feel half asleep then alert and invigorated afterwards.

‘I had 12 sessions but saw benefits after the third. It really has changed my life – my symptoms are far less intrusive and I feel great.’

HEART ATTACk TECHNIQuE ‘COuLD SAVE LIVES’A new, relatively simple

way of treating heart attacks could save thousands of lives, according to specialists at a Clydebank hospital. It involves clearing all narrowed arteries when someone is admitted with a heart attack, rather than just the one which is completely blocked.

A trial, involving the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, was so successful that the research was stopped early.

Jubilee heart specialist Prof Colin Berry said the results were “striking”

Another cardiologist, Prof Keith Oldroyd, said: “At the moment when patients come in with a heart attack they have an emergency angiogram and we usually only treat the artery that has caused the heart attack.

“Many of these patients have additional narrowings in other arteries. We’re treating all the narrowed arteries at the same time to see if that confers additional benefit.”

Every year 25,000 people in the UK have the kind of heart attack which is treated with an angioplasty. This involves inserting a stent, or thin tube, to open an artery and restore the blood flow. Arteries become narrowed by fatty deposits, so although a blood clot may have only blocked one artery, other narrowed arteries are common.

Current UK recommendations advise specialists only to treat the artery which is completely blocked.

“Most cardiologists thought it wasn’t safe to treat a

second or third artery at the same time as the first artery,” Prof Oldroyd said. “Sometimes the patients would be brought back several weeks later or sometimes only medication would be used. The results of this trial suggest that this recommendation should be revisited.”

The trial involved 465 patients in five specialist heart centres around the UK. In addition to the Golden Jubilee, they were the London Chest Hospital, Morriston Hospital in Swansea, Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Half of the trial participants had all their arteries cleared, the rest were treated in the conventional way.

The researchers found that the new technique reduced the combined risk of dying, having another heart attack or being left with angina by two-thirds - such a significant finding that the trial was stopped early. It also only added an average of 20 minutes to each treatment.

The results have been published in the New

England Journal of Medicine and were presented at an international conference in Amsterdam earlier this month.

Prof Colin Berry, heart specialist at the Golden Jubilee and the University of Glasgow, said: “They were some of the most striking results for a treatment that I have ever seen. The results of this trial really challenge clinical practice.”

Heart specialists are now keen that even larger studies get under way as quickly as possible. In the past, it has taken a decade or more for the latest evidence to be adopted into frontline medical care.

Prof Berry added: “It’s appealing because it’s a form of usual care that can be readily adopted across the UK.

“On the other hand there are logistical considerations and cost considerations. However, we would argue that reducing the likelihood of further cardiac events, potentially reducing the heart failure admissions to hospital, is going to reduce costs overall and this should be implemented as soon as possible.”

Gerbils make good family pets. They’re easy to care for and with lots of attention they can become very tame. Gerbils are built to withstand desert conditions and so produce little waste, naturally conserving as much water and nutrition as possible. This makes them a popular, clean and odourless pet. They’re curious, active and

entertaining and are ideal pets for older children. Gerbils live for two to four years.

Gerbils are very sociable and are used to living in colonies. A gerbil living on its own may become depressed causing behavioural problems and in some cases, poor health. Therefore, they should be kept in single-sex pairs or groups. Buy your gerbils at the same time – they will probably be happier as they’ll be used to living together from a young age. If you introduce a new gerbil that is over 10 weeks old they’re highly likely to fight.

Gerbils can live in most hamster cages but make sure you choose one that provides enough space for your pets. Position the cage away from radiators and draughts. Cages wholly constructed of plastic with ventilation areas are ideal as you can provide a deep layer of woodshavings for your gerbils to tunnel in.

Modular units are a good choice as they can be extended - additional rooms and tunnels are great because they imitate a gerbil’s natural habitat. Make sure that the cage has a house or hideaway hole so your gerbils feel secure while they’re sleeping..

If you want to keep your gerbils in a modular unit, make sure you use anti-gnaw rings in the tunnels – gerbils are enthusiastic chewers!

Alternatively, you can recreate the natural

burrows they’d have in the wild by housing your gerbils in a gerbilarium. Fill the tank section with bedding m a t e r i a l such as fine peat or soil - your gerbils will soon create a series of tunnels that you’ll be able to see through the glass. Sprinkle water on the peat or soil occasionally.

You should provide lots of toys and tubes for your pets to play with and chew on to keep them entertained. If you put a wheel in their cage make sure it’s suitable for gerbils as they can catch their tails in wheels with open bars.

Add some stones to the tank so your gerbils can use them for tunnel support.

Your pets will require a good quality gerbil mix such as Pets at Home muesli. Whilst in our care we feed Pets at Home food to gerbils and recommend that you continue to do so when you take your new pets home. This will help to prevent stomach upsets caused by changing their food. If you do wish to change your gerbils’ diet, introduce new food slowly over a period of about 10 days, phasing out the old food completely.

You can supplement your pets’ diet with very small quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables such as apple and carrot. Do not feed them too much fresh food as this can lead to stomach upsets. Vitamin supplements and mineral stones can be added to your pets’ diet to keep them in optimum health.

Pumpkin seeds make great gerbil treats. Sunflower seeds are tasty too, but they’re very fattening and too many can cause stomach upsets and obesity.

Gerbils can develop stomach upsets and diarrhoea if their diet contains too much carbohydrate or fat and not enough roughage.

Your gerbils’ lives can be enriched by providing toys and stimulating natural behaviour. For example,

hiding treats around their cage keeps them amused and imitates natural feeding. Hideaway holes like houses and tubes allow them to hide their food just as they would in the wild. Gerbils love to chew so wooden blocks or toys are always welcome! Keeping gerbils in pairs brings them happiness and companionship.

When you first take your gerbils home, give them a day or two to get used to their new surroundings without being disturbed. You should then start talking quietly to them so that they get used to your voice. The next step is to introduce your hand into their cage and perhaps offer a treat. Your pet may climb onto your hand but if not, pick it up slowly by cupping both hands around it gently but firmly.

Never pick a gerbil up by its tail, it can be very painful.

It’s important that you handle your gerbils regularly to develop their confidence and maintain your relationship with them. Handle your gerbils over a table or close to the floor in case they wriggle and fall out of your hands and remember that young children should be closely supervised when handling them. Once they’re used to you, they’ll enjoy being handled and will come to you and eat from your hand.

Gerbils are extremely clean so their home requires less cleaning than that of other small pets.

Your gerbils’ cage should be cleaned thoroughly once a week using a pet-safe disinfectant. If you keep your pets in a gerbilarium, clean it thoroughly every two or three weeks with a pet-safe disinfectant and change the peat or soil. But if they’re using one area of their home as a toilet it will need to be cleaned more often.

A healthy diet and hygienic conditions will help to keep your gerbils in good health but there are a number of potential problems that you should be aware of.

A healthy gerbil will be active, playful and inquisitive with soft, shiny fur, bright eyes and a clean nose. Signs of illness include lethargy, ruffled fur, mucus around the eyes or nose and loss of appetite. A gerbil’s teeth should not be visible when its mouth is closed and there should be a fine covering of fur over its ears.

As with all rodents, gerbils’ teeth grow constantly so it’s important to provide them with wooden toys, mineral stones or treats to gnaw on.

Gerbils can develop sores around the nose or mouth from burrowing in rough cage material or rubbing against cage bars if they’re bored. If this happens, try changing the cage material and provide toys and exercise equipment such as chew toys and tunnels. If your pet shows signs of being unwell contact your vet immediately.

but change of course can be exciting and revitalising, forcing us to re-examine our preconceptions and challenge our motivation. so just now, we in the anglican Church in this part of spain are in the process of welcoming and enjoying a changing situation as we receive our extremely enthusiastic new priest, rev pauline (yes, a woman – now there’s a change for us) into our midst. and unlike our previous priest, this one is employed full time and is committed to becoming available to all in this vast parish, quite literally the size of Wales. a massive challenge for her, and for us too no doubt as members of the Church, as i’m sure that under God’s leadership she will help us to find new ways of serving him and the communities in which we live.

so commenting on this aspect of our need to serve, pauline reminded me of a slight misquotation of president J F kennedy’s famous 1961 inaugural address: “ask not what God can do for you, but what you can do for God!” and she added “we all so often come to him with a shopping list of what we want the Church to be doing, when maybe we should be listening to him telling us to get involved and put those ideas into practice.”

A. it is correct. Orden HAP/72/2013 of 30th of January has brought to life form 720, which needs to be filled in by all residents of spain who have assets abroad worth more than 50,000 euros. this form must be presented before the end of April with severe penalties for not doing so.

All resident of spain shall provide the spanish tax administration with the following information:1. information of bank accounts you may have abroad, already in your name, or have authorization or rights

to at any time of the year which corresponds to the declaration. the information shall include: • the full name and address of the bank. • Full identification of the accounts. • the opening or cancellation date, or if applicable, grant and revocation as authorized. • the average balances of the last trimester and the corresponding average balances for the last

trimester of the year2. information on securities, assets, values or rights representing the equities of all types of entities, or

transfer own equities to a third party, of which they own and are abroad, as well as life insurance and life annuity policy holders or beneficiaries of temporary policies. in this case, the information must include, in addition to the identification of the entity, the balance on December 31st, the number and class of such assets.

Eau dE LavEndErThe healing and antiseptic properties of lavender is well

documented and lavender flower water is extensively used therapeutically, to promote relaxation and tranquility.

This ‘water’ remains after producing a lavender essential oil and when released via steam or water distillation, is called a ‘hydrosol’.

Beside lavender, orange blossom water and rosewater are famous hydrosols and have been used for centuries as ingredients in perfumes and foods, as well as for medicinal reasons; the use of lavender water as cologne is well know, comprising a blend of water, alcohol, and lavender essential oil.

HOW TO MAKE LAVENDER COLOGNE:Mix 15 ml of lavender oil with 375 ml of alcohol and a drop

of musk oil. Put the mixture in an airtight jar, shake it every few days for 2 weeks, then strain it through muslin into small perfume bottles.

To add the final classy touch, place sprigs of fresh lavender upright in the bottle.

Lavender water is used in a variety of ‘beauty’ preparations, but it can not be used in cooking.

LAVENDER WATER FOR DAILY USE: This recipe doesn’t involve alcohol, is cost effective and

much more fun!

Boil 250 ml water for 5-10 minutes. Add 2 teaspoon of dried lavender flowers. Add 20 drops of essential oils. Mix well. Filter it into a large ceramic bowl.

When it is cool, pour it into a jar, and close tightly. Keep it in the fridge.

WHAT TO DO WITH IT: Once mixed but still warm, inhale the steam to clear your sinuses.

Make a compress for your face with a cotton flannel. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse your face, then massage the skin with it. It will tightened the pores and reduce any minor blemishes or redness.

Use it to cleanse your face at the end of the day.

Chilled lavender flower water can be use as a skin freshener. Spritz the face with it (keep your eyes closed). Shake well before use.

You can use it to nourish your hair, making it soft and shiny.

Spray lightly on your clothes when you know you are going to face an especially trying day.

It is one of the oldest fragrances of European culture. Use it to give your bedroom a fresh, clean scent by sprinkling it on sheets. It is especially beneficial for those with insomnia.

LAVENDER BED LINEN MIST:

Take 200 ml mineral water and add 10 drops of lavender essential oils. Put it in a sprayer bottle. Shake well before use.

Beside sprinkling on your linens or pillow, spray a few drops on your towel.

Lastly, use it as a room sprayer for that fresh, scent-of-the-garden feel to a room.

There are many pottery shops, some with thousands of pieces on display ranging from ashtrays to large planters and decorative lampshades. The other handicraft most typical of Níjar is the manufacture of jarapas - colourful cotton and wool rugs and blankets.

other hand-made items on sale in the shops: leather ware, jewellery, decorative ironwork, furniture as well as edible items such as honey, cakes and wine. Soaps, candles and many other items made from natural products can also be obtained in Níjar.

I find the town a pleasant place to stroll. The high street is attractive with its many shops and bars and there are quaint narrow cobbled streets with the traditional whitewashed houses so typical of Andalucía. At the top of the main thoroughfare is the town’s main square with an attractive church. The ‘Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación’ was built in the 16th century.

Probably the best time to visit Níjar is in the evening when most of the tourists have gone. Many of them would have combined a trip to Níjar with a visit to the nearby Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, so the town is quite empty in the afternoon too but, at that time of day, many of the shops are closed - the shopkeepers are taking their siesta!

Just outside the town is El Hoyazo, a volcanic crater. I once spent a hot and dusty but, nevertheless, enjoyable hour collecting garnets there. Unfortunately the stones were a bit on the small side!

All legal protection, absence of trade barriers, rights of free movement and other benefits of forming part of the continental ‘club’ would cease on the very day the north-eastern Spanish region broke away from Spain, potentially creating problems with tourism, imports and exports, among other issues, says European Commission spokeswoman Pia Åhrenkilde.

Mas, to discuss the matter ‘rather than doing so by letter-writing’.

Confirming Åhrenkilde’s statement about how Catalunya would cease to be a part of the European Union, Almúnia stressed: “These things should be talked about, not via correspondence, at a distance, but around a table in a serious, calm and rigorous two-way discussion, free from emotions and in cold blood, in order to find solutions to what is, evidently, a huge political disagreement.”

But the region of Catalunya – the capital of which is Barcelona – is not taking Almúnia’s or Åhrenkilde’s warnings seriously.

Spokesman and regional minister for economic affairs within the Govern Català, Andreu Mas-Colell, said there were other, similar cases of secession discussion and that he did not believe ceasing to be part of Europe would affect those.

Mas-Colell raised the question of Scottish independence as a case in point.

“I cannot see Scotland being pushed out of the European Union, politically-speaking, so I do not believe this would happen to Catalunya either,” the minister stated.

Broadband, fourth-generation mobile phones and extra-fast connections are now the norm and have forced the government’s hand when it came to reforming the law, Soria explains.

Among other objectives, it is aimed at increasing competition, improving service to the public, removing red tape and over-onerous legal requirements to allow operators to grow, and increasing

networks available.Data protection for users, an inter-

ministerial commission concerning radio-frequency effects on health, increased capacity for inspections and sanctions by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and a guarantee that all customers can use ultra-fast networks are among other aspects of the new law.

Setting up networks will become easier as environmental and urban planning licence requirements will be eliminated, and the guarantee to all customers of access to fast connections will mean freeholders – known as communities of property owners – will be unable to block the installation of such networks.

Operators will also be permitted to use channels which belong to other firms or which are publicly-owned.

Statistics Institute and the Ministry of Public Works, the Council of Notaries’ statistics, compiled from actual operations closed in the month, confirmed last week that, although pointing towards stabilisation, home sales continued to fall in July, by 7.9%, while the price per square metre of homes sold dropped by 13.9% year-on-year, placing the average at 1,238 euros.

Specifically, El Mundo reported that in the housing sector, sales experienced a 10.8% reduction, year-on-year, and the average price per square metre was 1,351 euros, representing a drop of 14.6%, year-on-year.

The number of new mortgage loans registered fell by 27.1% year-on-year, and the average value of these loans fell to 121,961 euros, a reduction of 16.1%. In addition, the percentage of home sales with mortgage financing fell to 30.4%.

In a break down of the mortgage loans granted, the number of loans for the acquisition of a property fell in July by 22.8% year-on-year, while for the number of new mortgage loans for house purchases the decline stood at 22.5%, and 25.2% for all other property.

In terms of quantities requested, the average loan for the acquisition of any type of property fell by 10.7% year-on-year, to 114,250 euros. For house purchases, the average amount of credit was 108,863 euros, representing a drop of 10.3% year-on-year.

Cueva del Viento is the largest volcanic tube in the European Union, and the fourth largest in the world.

Translating to ‘Cave of the Wind’ and over 17 kilmetres long, the three level underground cave complex is formed by a myriad of passageways, terraces, lava pits and varying abstract lava formations.

The volcanic tunnel was first formed around 27, 000 years ago by the balsaltic lava flows from the Pico Viejo volcano, located in the foothills of Mount Teide.

Running underneath the village of Icod De Los Vinos, in the northern part of Tenerife, the large network of passages still contains many unexplored extensions. As future explorations of the site continue, this ensues further discoveries will proceed to expand the complex.

Another unique source of findings lie in the cave’s plentiful collection of subterranean fauna. With a current total of 190 species, 48 of these are animals that can survive only in this dark, subsurface environment - these are known as troglobites. Many of these species are also quite recent scientific discoveries.

A fascinating both geological and biological educational experience, visitors can also learn of extinct animals, such as the Rook or the Houbara Bustard, from the abundance of vertebrate fossils and other various skeletal remains inside the cave.

Cueva del Viento is available to be explored by appointment only, where visitors take a guided tour that goes for two hours with an entry cost of around 16 euros for adults and five euros for children.

Cueva del Viento not suitable for children under the age of five, nor claustrophobia sufferers and people with any mobility problems.

Visitors to Cueva del Viento are strongly advised to wear long trousers with either hiking boots or sports shoes, and ensure to stay with the tour group and follow the signposts throughout the cave at all times.

HEAL-ALL CHICkEN SOupAs we begin to head into ‘cold and

flu season’ we need to do our best to stay healthy and avoid feeling under the weather.

For decades chicken soup has been known to take the edge off when said pesky bugs attack, but what is it about chicken soup that makes us feel better? We know that we feel better after having a bowl of chicken soup, but what exactly gives this type of soup its “special powers?”

There are various recipes for chicken soup, but most contain certain essential ingredients such as onions and carrots that create an impactful combination. Based on research done by Dr. Stephen Rennard, MD, a researcher at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, chicken soup acts as an anti-inflammatory agent for your nasal cells, giving your nose the relief it needs. Particularly, the onions in the soup contain protein, calcium, and especially sulfur, which decreases swelling and aids in reducing nasal congestion. Another significant ingredient

in chicken soup is carrots. Carrots enable our bodies to produce vitamin A, which strengthens our white blood cells and in turn allows us to better fight off infection. Bonus: carrots also assist with retinal function to produce better vision!

Hot soups in general help keep nasal passages moist, thin out mucus, prevent dehydation, and sooth a sore throat, so what is it about the chicken? Chicken contains an amino acid called cysteine that is released when the soup is made. This amino acid thins mucus in the lungs, aiding in the healing process. Chicken also plays its role as a great source of protein for your muscles. This is particularly helpful when your body feels weakened and drained during illness. And the more ingredients in your soup, the better, according to Rennard and his research team who have found that chicken soup with a variety of veggies can help ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, including congestion, stuffy nose, cough, and sore throat.

VIEWpOINTA couple of weeks ago gmail decided to spontaneously reorganise itself

overnight – Why? What was wrong with the old way? And what about the sheer utter rudeness of it? I don’t march unbidden into other people’s

houses and reorganise their cutlery drawers, so what gives Microsoft the idea that it can reorganise my inbox without so much as a by your leave?

I know from experience that it is more fun banging your head against a brick wall than trying to reason with a computer, so I knitted my brows and set to; eventually, due to trial and error and multiple cups of tea, I triumphed, though exactly how it can be called improved is still a mystery to me.

Then Microsoft did it again! It decided that it would sort out which of my emails were Primary, which were Social and which were Promotions. Thus I now have three ‘boxes’ to open when I want to see my post – how is that an improvement on one?

I object to having my post arbitrarily categorised - Gmail is my postman, not my Personal Secretary! I expect my postman to put everything that is addressed to me in my postbox, and I expect the same of gmail. Sorting it is none of gmail’s business!

This unwanted interference with gmail was nothing compared to the latest Microsoft madness to be visited upon me. Intending to write this week’s nonsense, I clicked down the familiar paths only to find that I was persona non grata until I had inserted my 25 digit Product Key. My what? It is my computer, I’ve taught it my highly secret password, so why should I need a key? It’s like opening your front door only to find that in your absence someone has booby-trapped your doormat!

I wasn’t going to give it the satisfaction of asking for Help, (which is the misnomer of all time) so I went straight for the jugular, and clicked ‘Product key lost.’

‘A Product Key is not available for your programme.’ It stated with implacable finality. Now that was simply perverse. I responded by singing ‘Jerusalem,’ paying particular attention to the bit

about bows of burning gold, and spears of clouds unfurled.Strangely enough, it promptly opened up. Microsoft, why can’t you be civil enough to ask before arbitrarily imposing ‘improvements’ upon your

clients? And I would draw your attention to that good old country saying: ‘If it ain’t

If IT AIN’T BROkE

I was perhaps nine or ten when it happened to me.

Whitley Park Primary was a short quarter mile walk from the house where we lived, and although I always had company from class mates as I made my way to and from school; on this particular day I was on my own. The reason was that several of the kids had climbed over the fence into a nearby allotment that ran alongside Merton Road – the main route home. Allotments were a common sight in those days before wholesale building began to take a hold and any spare land was seen as ripe for development.

The attraction here was not the allotments themselves, but a defunct WW2 air raid shelter - a large hummock of grassed earth standing proud of the ground - whose sloping entrance had been sealed with corrugated iron sheeting. It was this area that was a magnet to kids because it made the ideal slide, even though the iron looked the worse for wear having been in place for a good many years.

I wasn’t a particularly adventurous kid, not so much because things like this were not appealing to me, but due largely to the fact that I had been

brought up to respect people and property, and this being a fenced off area, obviously meant that it was a no-go zone. I was also a bit of a wuss.

But as I stood and enviously watched the other children enjoying themselves, I decided to ignore my reservations and join them in what surely was just a bit of harmless fun as they proceeded to punish the backsides of their short, baggy school pants on the rusty slide. Then as I began to clamber over the locked gates, I felt a firm hand on my shoulder.

It was obviously an adult’s grip which surprised me because I had not noticed anybody else in the vicinity. I had visions of some irate member of the public about to give me a dressing down, or worse still, the local Bobby who would march me home to my parents. But as I slowly turned to see who my assailant was, the hand was removed and I stood staring in amazement at an empty street. I remember turning a full 360, first one way and then the other to spot the owner of the hand, but there was no one.

It was not a frightening experience, and my feelings were simply of utter astonishment. The grasp on my shoulder was distinct and had not only stopped me in my tracks, but had gently pulled me back from climbing over. What could it have been?

Barrio rivalry isn’t the only mechanism of village discord. The eternal struggle between the sexes provides some good sport and forms the basis of regular and very interesting village gossip. The distaste one barrio feels for the other isn’t dependent on age unlike the conflict between man and woman where it is fundamental to the see-saw of emotions which fuel the struggle.

The more senior couples, those who regard the application of decongestant chest rub a scandalous act find avoidance to be the best recipe for togetherness. Most mature Alquerian wives believe their men to be totally unreliable at best and all a complete waste of rations.

The men are shooed into the streets every morning before the daily house scouring begins. Most men scuttle to their secret places to think. Alfonso Delgado in the security of the mirador remembers his days with the Ejército Popular during the Civil War. Alone in a hostile environment, living off his wits, danger around every corner, much like being married he muses. Some just wander through the olive groves counting the leaves and watching the world go by. Others walk the high sierra to the north of Alqueria. An uninhabited semi wilderness, just a vast expanse with very little in the way of humanity, rather like Rodriquez’s wife.

As the older men try desperately to avoid their womenfolk so the younger ones actively pursue theirs starting the whole ridiculous farce over again.

There was once a naive charm to the courtship ritual. Traditionally the courter would climb to the cliff-top overlooking Alqueria and having regained his breath call to the courtee in the Village below. The echoes from the cliff-face gave an eerie and surreal quality to the proceedings. The courter then climbs back down into the Village and the arms of his intended. This tradition isn’t used much anymore as Alquerian girls of today can’t be relied on to wait. Often, after the climb down the exhausted beau has

found his intended being attended to by another who wasn’t silly enough to climb the ruddy cliff in the first place. This has been the cause of many a fist fight and many a young lady scuttling off home, guilt ridden but fulfilled.

Those of working age should be too busy keeping hearth and kin together but somehow find the time to join in the fun. Partners change regularly amidst brawling husbands and screaming wives.

Perhaps the wedding service should be altered to read ‘Love, honour and obey at least until someone with a bigger car turns up.’

Probably the most conspicuous and silliest place to hide anything, but one that I did not think worth checking.

Flight of Fancy or Prediction of the Future?This article, originally, was to be about internet TV as we are likely to lose british TV anytime

in the near future. The more I considered the possibility of using the internet as the means of getting TV here, the more I came across the limitations of the internet. So I did an “Albert Einstein” while he was postulating the universe and developing his theory of “Folded Space”. Where as he started at our sun and moved, in his imagination, directly away from it, only to find that, without deviating from his course, he was heading back to his starting place.

Using his methodology, I started from where we are now. Using this embryonic web of interconnected computers, the current level of technology and a little imagination. My starting point is the internet.

The analogue of a spider’s web is intriguingly accurate. The way the internet works is by transferring packets of information through whatever route will allow it to get to it’s destination. For example, should a server ‘Go Down’ then any packets that were being directed through it will be redirected via the nearest new, working link. This information is stored in the packet and, when the receiving computer sends a “got it” message back to the sending computer, it will include the new link directions. Now for the “What If”? What if ALL technologies were integrated into a world wide System? This would include global navigation that didn’t rely on satellites which are 23,000 miles in orbit; TV and radio; as well as a global knowledge base that makes WikiPedia on a par with a child’s note book, with every piece of research and government decision post immediately and transparently. NO MORE SECRETS, NO MORE LIES! Now there’s a treasonous statement!

The next part of this ‘Study into Possible Futures’ relies on our current level of technology, which is fibre-optic cabling. Fibre optics are far superior to copper wire cabling in both the amount of information that can be transferred per second and the limitation on the amount of data lost for a given distance. The only limitation is the copper wire that is needed to get the signal into your house. This causes a ‘bottle-neck’ that slows everything down. Now for the prediction! Within the next 5 years, the answer will be found to enable the ‘last mile’ (the short distance between the fibre-optics and the house) to be the same speed as the rest of the network!

With this innovation in technology, added to the incredible high speeds that fibre-optics have to offer (1.05 petabits == 1 thousand trillion (million, million) bits per second), we will ALL have local WiFi guided navigation in our car, boats and plane; TV and audio-video communication (skype but 1000 times better!); Connection to the internet anywhere, at anytime; unlimited access to every piece of educational information, revolutionary innovation and ‘think tank’ on this planet and all absolutely free.

Time to stop now. The nurse has told me it is time to take my silly pill and climb back into my straight jacket. See you on Thursday at La Vida or Friday at Jack’s Bar (if they let me out)!

The One That Got Away by Michael Barton can be read on a number of levels. It shows Jack’s resilience and maturation in dealing with his parents’ divorce, his journey from laggard to leader. Dad was labelled as an absent parent and blamed for his son’s spiral into anti-social and unacceptable behaviour at school.

The idea of togetherness in separation isn’t anything like the ideal solution that Jack’s father envisages. He wants to be reunited with his wife, however, she has made other plans; sleeping with the boss, Dave, has paid off and she has been promoted.

So, the togetherness is an opportunity for father-son bonding and this forms a regular pattern of Saturday fishing regardless of the weather with the ultimate prize of trying to capture the elusive Lulu, a leather carp weighing around 20 pounds.

Jack’s attitude towards his schoolwork has improved and he is a straight A student in most subjects apart from French. Interestingly, Miss Moreau, the French vixen, had been dating Jack’s father until he had decided it was indiscrete and potentially harmful to Jack’s schooling. She had then started to date the new P.E. teacher, an athletic Adonis with a six pack. Cringe. Cringe. Don’t we love the type?

Whilst fishing, Lulu toys seductively with the father’s fishing line before getting away and leaving him disappointed. Nothing seems to go right for him, poor man! A further disappointment comes when Jack asks if he can miss fishing the following week to go to the cinema on a date. Wait for it…With Lulu. His father is understandably amused:

All morning you’ve had me thinking I’ll catch Lulu first and all the while you’ve had her in your back pocket for next Saturday. Ha.

On the way home, Jack drops hints about his French teacher, doing his bit of match-making, seeming more grown up than child! In fact he was approving of the relationship.

That’s when I realise that I might have brought a boy fishing with me but I’m taking a man home.

Jasper by Rosemary Westwell is different. Carrie, a schoolteacher is

complacent about her work and there is an irritating smugness about her.

Was there nothing she could not do?

She’s in for a shock and it serves her right. An unfortunate stereotypical image.

She was unnerved by Jasper, her newest student’s unblinking stare when he advised her not to drive home via Westwood Road. No explanation offered. A bit odd. His commanding tone made his words sound as though he was a senior member of the secret service insisting on a need-to-know basis.

This irritated her. Carrie thought he was playing games with her or even trying to win a bet. She was not going to be intimidated and decided to go home her normal route as usual, quickly but safely. There were two surprises waiting for her: the first was on the local news on the tv, the second more significantly during registration in school the following day! Why was there a stunned silence in class and what had this to do with Jasper? Could he see into the future? Whatever the truth, Carrie was shocked into silence. Now you must read it to find out what happened.

You’re no spring chicken. More like an Autumn leaf that’s fallen off the tree.

The Autumn of her Life by Janette Davies is more reflective. It’s a sad fact that growing old has its draw-backs and senility causes confusion between the present and the past. Lizzie and her husband, Geof have a villa on the Costa Blanca. Cathy, Lizzie’s mother is staying with them. It’s October, much quieter: no hoards of kids screaming and yelling or British yobbos swearing and swigging beer out of cans. In other words, Autumn bliss.

Cathy is walking along the bay looking for her husband who has been dead for two years! She confuses her singers, Dusty Springfield with Sandy Shaw and thinks that the Midnight Train to Georgia was recorded by Diana Ross and the Supremes. This is bad enough but she is so hypercritical about her daughter’s husband The Idiot and how she could have married John Gardner (whoever he is) and been living in Sutton Coldfield. Now who in their right minds would want to swap the Costa Blanca for Sutton Coldfield? No need to answer that one. Point taken, hopefully? Enjoy.

wATCH ouT wATCH ouTI remember getting my first bike aged 4; a red and blue

machine with stabilisers. I grew out of it quickly but money was tight so I had to walk until my 8th birthday. Then I got my next one which was bought second hand for £7. It was really heavy, had no gears and curious brakes that operated with metal bars instead of cables and I painted it bright blue. I remember dad teaching me to ride it in our back garden.

Having a bike meant freedom; my mates and I had a large scale map of Guildford on which we proceeded to draw the boundaries of our imaginary kingdom on each time we returned from a faraway adventure. We could be gone from early morning till dusk, parking our bikes in distant woodlands and playing ‘war’ or Hide N’ Seek. I don’t remember us ever taking sandwiches or drinks as we lived on fresh air and exuberance.

My best friend Paul Cox and I used to earn a decent living helping the local Unigate milkman with his deliveries. Saturdays and holidays we would jump in the cab or perch on the back of the float at the beginning of his round and zoom off. The milkman smoked fags whilst he pootled along giving instructions to his two nimble assistants for what was required at each doorstep. This was in the days of Corona (every bubble’s passed its fizzical) and we would each be rewarded by a litre bottle of whatever we fancied. Cream Soda was my preferred tipple in those days yet now my stomach churns at the thought of all the sugar and goodness knows what else that I glugged down.

The prestige of the milkman reached a nadir in the 70s; Unigate discovered that the Humphreys were stealing people’s milk and came up with the slogan

‘watch out watch out there’s a Humphrey about!’ Telly adverts starring Muhammed Ali, Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Rod Hull warned us kids about the milk snatchers that wanted our milk. We in turn went mad for the free red and white bendy straws, badges, stickers and other Humphrey paraphernalia we could lay our hands on. Being Unigate helpers of course put us first in line for the freebies.

In 1970 Ernie was the fastest milkman in the west, Benny Hill wrote the song in 1955 as a tribute to his time as a milkman on a horse drawn cart in Eastleigh Hampshire. The lyric ‘he galloped into Market Street’ probably happened as the street does exist. He performed the song on the Benny Hill Show; it was later released as a single becoming the 1971 Christmas number1 and staying there for 4 weeks. Two Ton Ted the bread delivery man was Ernie’s love rival for the widow Sue and they had a ‘wild west’ style shoot out with Ernie being killed by a combination of a well-aimed rock cake and stale pork pie. Ernie the milkman went to heaven where ferocious dogs are banned, Two Ton Ted married Sue but Ernie came back to haunt them on their honeymoon with the ghostly rattling of his milk bottles.

Although I enjoyed delivering the white stuff, I stopped drinking milk at a young age. The dreaded ¼ pint bottle of free school milk did it for me as it was always warm and tasted horrid. In 1971 Margaret Thatcher gained the nickname the ‘milk snatcher’ for stopping free school milk for 7 to 11 year olds and for her kindness I will be forever in her debt!

SNuB TO fERNANDO ALONSO, SAy fERRARIFerrari say their decision to sign Kimi Raikkonen for next

season is not a snub to current number one Fernando Alonso.

According to the BBC, team boss Stefano Domenicali said the combination of the two was “the best one could have today in Formula 1”.

“For anyone thinking the choice of Kimi is somehow an anti-Alonso choice, I can put their minds at rest,” he added.

“At Ferrari, everyone knows the interests of the team come first. Fernando is a key asset for this team and he will be for a long time.”

The Italian team confirmed on Wednesday that Finland’s Raikkonen, 33, was joining them on a two-year contract. The 2007 world champion will replace Felipe Massa.

Ferrari’s relationship with Alonso has grown tense at times this year as both have suffered from an inability to prevent Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel building a comfortable championship lead.

The frustration has been building at Ferrari over the last four years, after Alonso narrowly missed out on the title in both 2010 and 2012. Domenicali admitted at the Italian Grand Prix last weekend that the experience of last season, when Vettel hauled in a 39-point deficit, “is still burning for us”.

Alonso has been supported at times by Massa over the past four seasons, but Domenicali insisted Alonso was “the first to be happy with a choice made to strengthen the group, because he is too intelligent not to realise that a stronger

team can only be an advantage”.Domenicali added: “For the first time (since 1953), we will

have a driver pairing made up of two world champions, which in itself is already significant, as they are the sort to always try and win and they can help each other by taking valuable points off our rivals.

“Having said that, we are well aware that without a competitive car, not even Superman can win. So our priority on a daily basis is always the same, namely to give our drivers a car capable of always fighting for the top place.”

Domenicali said Ferrari would operate on the basis of Alonso and Raikkonen starting the 2014 season as equals.

But he said the team would always consider asking one to help the other if the championship situation dictated it.

“Nothing will change in the way the team is run,” Domenicali said. “Since the world began, our drivers have always started on equal terms. It’s always been that way and always will.

“Then, during the course of the season, if the situation is such that one driver can help the other based on the points table, it’s logical and right that it should happen.

“It’s happened in the past and will happen in the future, as all drivers who have driven a Ferrari have demonstrated.

“It occurred at the time of (Juan Manuel) Fangio and (Peter) Collins (in 1956) and more recently with (Mika) Salo and (Eddie) Irvine (in 1999), when the Finn gave up on his only chance of a win in Formula 1 to help his team-mate, as Raikkonen was helped by Felipe (in 2007), before repaying the compliment (in 2008) and again with Felipe and Fernando.”

MOTOGp: EuGENE LAVERTy: WORLD SupERBIkES TITLE HOpE WANTS MOTOGp CONTRACT

World Superbike title challenger Eugene Laverty says he is pushing hard to win a MotoGP contract for next season. The 27-year-old, from Northern Ireland, won both races in in Turkey on Sunday to move into third place in the battle for the Superbike championship. Laverty, though, revealed his future was uncertain and that he was keen to thrash out a deal for 2014.

“I want to be in MotoGP. It is where I feel my future lies. But I am not sure what Aprilia’s plans are,” he said. “I am in talks with them about a move into MotoGP - that is where I want to be going. However, things have been stalling in recent weeks, and I have been getting a bit impatient with that because I feel I have been doing the business for them. I want to have a contract in front of me so I

can focus on winning the Superbike title. It is frustrating because the guys I am beating have already put pen to paper. I have not got a deal for next year but, after the two wins in Istanbul, I am definitely in a better position.

“I would like to be in MotoGP with Aprilia because I have been with them for two years now and I know the bike and the electronics well, which is important.”

With three rounds of the 2013 World Superbikes campaign remaining, Toomebridge man Laverty is third on 297 points, 26 behind the leader, England’s Tom Sykes, with Italian Sylvain Guintoli in second.

The next round is at Laguna Seca in the United States on 29 September, with the last two rounds at Magny-Cours and Jerez in October.

Boat Fishing.

I managed to find a Monday with good sea conditions and went out with ‘Orca Steve’ for a half day’s fishing. It was a pleasure to be joined by ‘Med-way Chris’ over on his annual 3 week’s summer break.

As we trolled out of the har-bour I got my first bonito tuna and basically the action didn’t stop (Tuna-wise) for the next 5 hours.

It wasn’t long before I got fed up with catching and releasing up to 4 bonitos at a time to 2lbs so trolled a small dead bait and about 30 minutes later I had a take but it had gone by the time I got to the rod and took it out of its holder.

We tried drifting the bottom in 40 to 120 feet for half an hour but the fish were not around so it was back to trolling. I had an-other take on a dead bait and it had two gashes on the back of its head when I got it aboard.

All together Chris and I caught 80 to 100 bonitos and it was a shame the biggest was only 2lbs. Last week Steve had some to 4.1/2lbs.

It is interesting to note the minimum keeper size for boni-tos when caught in the Med is 75cm, ¾ of a metre. So how are Mercadona and other su-permarkets selling 2 kilo 15 inch ones then? And while I’m hav-ing a moment how come they can sell what they call ‘moralla’ mixed tiny fishes such as John Dory and gurnards to mention just two and these were only 3 inches long.

Why I ask is that I can get a €1000.00 fine per fish for any that are undersize. Is it one rule for me and another for the commercials and supermarkets? Answers by postcard please!!!

Steve also had a trip with the Fortuna boys and they caught a few fish.

Shore Fishing.

‘London Bill’ also took advan-tage of the tuna run and spun for them from Macenas rocks where he caught a lot of bonitos but none were bigger than 1lb. He also landed a few Atlantic mackerel.

Coarse Fishing.

‘Brian V’s’ Brother in law and sis have been up on the Ebro, she had a new PB 8.1/2lb Zander and a 167lb cat plus carp to 31lbs, a good week.

Abbey Angling and Rods and Reels matches were won with 34lbs and 17lbs.

The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650.

Latest license information.

There is a new loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia. Or the new UK sea fishing license should suf-fice BUT although we have been told this can be used here I have not seen a copy of this rule on paper and so it could be a prob-lem if pulled up by the police who probably don’t know about the rule.

There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing li-censes for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. There is talk of an agreement between all regions for any license to be used else-where, watch this space.

Thursday 12th September Aguilon hosted this Individual Singles Stableford, with a start time of 10.50am; all 22 of our brave warriors had rested properly and were eager to do battle against the course and the other competitors. Nigel Greenwood with his newly arrived slice quickly took himself out of contention by spraying tee shots in every direction but straight. But the ever consistent Mark Danson, playing off his handicap of 2, absolutely dominated the day; his 36 points saw him home in first place plus a Nearest the Pin on the 4th and converting that into a two. Richard Aird playing off 23

finished with a very creditable 35 points to secure 2nd place whilst Alan (Mr. Steady) Chippendale finished in 3rd place with 34 points.Highest Lady finisher was

his going from bad to worse, the most successful part of Terry’s game over the past few weeks has been his success in finding stray golf balls. This week Norma (Terry’s long suffering wife) packed his little sandwich box full of goodies so his thirst and hunger would be satisfied, dressed him in vivid yellow shorts and colour co-ordinate golf shirt, patted him on the head and said go and play nicely with your friends. All was well and going about to plan until being held up on the fourth Tee, Terry went in search of golf balls on the huge hill adjacent to the Tee. Terry quickly located a shiny new ball in the undergrowth and bent down to retrieve it. Unfortunately the ball was lying in an unnoticed wasp nest, several dozen wasps were disturbed and clearly looking at Terry’s shorts thought they had found the largest Sun Flower in the universe. Enough to say that it was sight to behold to

see our Terry racing down the hill followed by a swarm of confused wasps each of whom stung him for imitating a Sun Flower. In spite of the stings Terry hung on to the ball!!. Monday 9th September was a single division competition at Marina Golf and 35 points was enough for Jim Budd to take first place by one point from Ali Mahmud. Hylton Smith (32) was third and Rosalie Fardon was the best placed lady.

Thursday’s competition was pairs betterball with a par score of 36 points. First were Rosalie Fardon and John Lally with 41 points, second Linda King and Jim Budd (39) and third Margaret Budd and Brian Couper (37).

The Andaluz Derby ends goalless at El Hornillo in the Tercera Division Group XIII on a scorching afternoon in Huercal-Overa.

No goals, but some fantastic support in the stands saw Huercal-Overa have the best of the play but unable to find the back of the net, this was evident in the first few minutes when Carmona (On his debut for the home side) found himself with the ball at his feet in the Pulpi penalty area but could only direct it against the post. From the rebound Tomas Campanas smashed the ball straight towards the keeper who held the ball well on the goal line.

The pressure kept coming from the Reds with some good interchanging play down the left saw Marcos attempt a cross from deep in the Pulpi half that dangerously took the keeper by surprise then scrambled to the

far post swotting the ball out for a corner.

Soon after, Pedro Lloris gathered the ball inside the centre circle and with a drop of the shoulder slipped past 2 Pulpi midfielders to open up a route into the box where his shot fired wide under pressure from Alex Minarro.

The Away side, who were fielding Ex Huercal-Overa players Sele and Alex Minarro under the supervision of Coach Alonso Parra who started last season in charge at El Hornillo, were struggling to create much in front of goal and Paco was untroubled in the first 45 minutes.

The second half continued like the first, with chances for Huercal coming and going without any real danger to the visiting teams onion bag until the 62nd minute when Campanas controlled on his

chest in the area but fired wide of the post signalling groans from the main stand. With the game fizzling out loan Pulpi Striker Minan who had worked hard all alone spearheading the attack for the visitors had a couple of tame efforts that Paco dealt with easily.

At the final whistle a draw was probably the fair result, the home side having more of the ball and more efforts to break the deadlock but sadly not the quality in front of goal to make the difference.

Next up for Huercal-Overa is another home tie against El Palmar on Sunday the 22nd at 17:00.
