About The Types of

Catholic Wedding Ceremonies

There are two forms of Catholic wedding

Liturgy:

The Wedding or Nuptial Mass:

Often referred to as a “full Mass,” it is the

celebration of the Mass with the wedding

ceremony inserted in the middle of the

Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are

practicing Catholics and receiving Holy

Communion after a proper spiritual prepa-

ration.

The Wedding Ceremony:

This has all the elements of the above

(music, readings, vows, etc.) but without

the celebration of Mass. This form is suit-

able for general congregations and is of

shorter duration than the above.

PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are

NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY

exception is when a visiting priest is

invited by the family, approved by the

Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial

Mass on Sunday.

Use your IRA for your Gift Now and/or for your Estate Gift!

If you would like to make a gift now using your IRA and if:

You are at least 70 1/2 years old and don't exceed your maximum of $100,000 per year in

qualified charitable distributions, you will not have to report your distribution as income. It

will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required

minimum distribution (RMD). The best way to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them

you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution." In most cases, you will only have to

fill out a simple form.

Very important! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money

first, you’ll be taxed on it. If you make an Estate gift, you can make your Parish a beneficiary of

your IRA and your loved ones will not have to pay income tax on their proceeds.

My Dear Parishioners,

Even during this very difficult time, you continue to donate

food. Know that I am very grateful to you as the many,

many struggling families to whom we are giving food are

so appreciative of your generosity. These last two weeks, we have given out a tremendous

amount of food and certainly can use much more (see below). I pray that God will bless you and

your families for always helping when needed. Thanks also to Ben and Doug Rochler, to Judy

and Johnny Brady for packing food for these families and for all who have volunteered to help

others during this time.

I miss all of you and certainly miss coming to Mass. Fortunately, many of us have sufficient food

but we all desire and “hunger” for the Eucharist. I look forward to that day when we can receive

Communion again. I hear that most of us are spending much time watching the Mass and

praying. I am inspired by a group of faith-filled, exemplary women in the Parish who pray the Ro-

sary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet together every day on a conference telephone call. I try to join

them when I am able to do so.

My heart and prayers go out to the many families whose loved ones have been sick and those

who have died during this dreadful time. As we commend your loved ones to God’s loving care,

may He give you and your families the comfort and strength you need as you mourn their loss.

We weep with you.

Lastly, our Pastor, Fr. Hewes, the Priests and Deacon Carmine have been saying the Final Com-

mendation Prayers and giving blessings to the deceased in our parking lot in the front of the

Church. I know that this has given much comfort to many grieving families who are unable to have

a wake and a Funeral Mass. Also, remember to pray for our Funeral Directors.

As we place our trust in God, let us continue to pray for the countless number of people who risk

their lives every day to keep us safe and healthy, for those who are sick, unemployed, struggling

financially and who are so alone during this frightful time.

The Most Important Person on Earth - a Mother

The most important person on earth is a mother.

She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre

Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built

something more magnificent than any Cathedral

– a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfec-

tion of her baby’s body. The angels have not

been blessed with such a grace. They cannot

share in God’s creative miracle to bring new

saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can.

Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any

other creature. God joins forces with mothers in

performing this act of creation. What on God’s

good earth is more glorious that this: to be a mother?

Hi everyone,

Long time no see!! How are you getting along during this pandemic? I’m sure that it has hit every-

one of us in one way or another, whether you lost a loved one or know someone who did. Our

prayers go out to them and their families. On top of that, the weather has been so gloomy and

leads to further depression. I know personally that in the past, I would say to myself, “if I only had

the time, I would clean out the basement and garage. organize the shoe boxes of photos and

donate all the clothes in the closet that I haven’t worn in years.” What have I done? Practically

nothing!! I’m sure I’m not alone, so let’s try something new. There is Facetime that is so much

more than a phone call. Also, there is Zoom, kind of the same idea, but you can see and speak to

multiple people at the same time, even pray together. You can organize a gab fest or even a happy

hour without leaving your home. The app is FREE.

Did you see the the air show tribute to all first responders? Or take a ride to the beach or out to the

Madonna Shrine? These are all great “get-out-of-the- house“ things to do that requires no close

contact. If you have to be quarantined, isn’t Long Island a great place to be? You will do your mood

and your sanity a great favor by sitting in the serenity of your car or a park bench saying your rosary

rather than in a rocking chair at home. People are amazing at coming up with ways to cope. We

have had Birthday car parades around the neighborhood for children who couldn’t have a party .Just

yesterday we saw a vintage classic-car parade around the streets of Dix Hills. These things are so

uplifting. Let’s hear about your experiences, happy ones, please. Feel free to call me and maybe

I’ll put it in the bulletin for everyone to enjoy. Get out there and plant some flowers. Pray for every-

one and remember, we are all in this together.

Religious Liberty or Religious Oppression: A Time to Choose (Part 2)

Some faith leaders around the country have persisted in holding in-person services - a

matter of religious freedom - despite state and local limits on public gatherings. These gatherings are

usually held in the church parking lot as parishioners remain safely in their cars. However, both parish-

ioners and pastors have been arrested and fined. "Instead of using a scalpel to address this, they're

using a chainsaw," said Liberty Counsel.

In mid-April, Attorney General Barr said the government "may not impose special restrictions on

religious activity that do not also apply to non-religious activity."

Therefore, if the government allows

assembly in comparable places (grocery stores) "even in times of emergency, when reasonable and

temporary restrictions are placed on rights, the First Amendment and federal statutory law prohibit

discrimination against religious institutions and religious believers."

"Religious freedom in America is not simply a fundamental right but a foundational one," wrote

KrisAnne Hall, JD, Constitutional attorney. "The settlements of the first American colonies were estab-

lished in the flight from oppressive religious persecution. Christian martyrs and patriots

secured our God-given right to Freedom of Religion with their suffering and even with their lives."

By what authority does the government declare the church non-essential? "The church is a place

where people turn for help and for comfort in a climate of fear and uncertainty." For almost two millen-

In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Rwhoever believes in me will do the works that I do,

and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.

Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater

than you think. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box

Heavenly Father,

be with our men and women as they

serve our country. When they are faced

with danger, Give them the courage of

Michael the Archangel, who was

victorious over evil.

When our soldiers are faced with difficult

choices, give them the discernment of St.

Martin of Tours, the soldier who

remembered to aid the meek and

helpless.

When our soldiers are injured or forced to

the sidelines, give them the guidance you

gave to St. Ignatius of Loyola, who turned

a time of pain and recovery from a war

wound into a new life of trust in you.

Amen.

TRUST IN GOD

During a time of crisis or uncertainty,

we may find ourselves struggling

with fear and anxiety. This is a natu-

ral reaction.

However, in times of great stress

sometimes we forget a profound re-

source that is our spirituality. We

lose our centeredness, the founda-

tion of our spiritual lives, in the midst

of business. We have great models

for ways to care for our spirit in the

midst of great stress. For Jesus ac-

tion and prayer were inescapably

linked and was a constant rhythm in

his life. For example after feeding

the five thousand who gathered to

hear him he “withdrew again to the

mountain alone” (John 6:15).

Jesus’s strength came from prayer.

Pope Francis reminds us that “The

Lord tells us: ‘The first task in life is

this: prayer.’ But not the prayer of

words, like a parrot; but the prayer of

the heart: gazing on the Lord, hear-

ing the Lord, asking the Lord,” (Oct.

8, 2013, daily homily). So be

assured that God is with you and

loves you. Let your heart speak.

That is prayer. Let your heart speak

as often and about whatever is

weighing on you. Then, be still and

listen. Tolerate the intolerable

feelings knowing that like the waves

in the ocean they come in and they

go out. But God is always with you.
