Witnessing Forgiving Loving Helping Igniting Teaching Evangelizing

Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps our Church to encourage and provide the

opportunity for tomorrow’s priests to discern their vocation. When a priest is ordained…

when a person becomes a deacon or lay minister – your gifts have helped in their formation.

“I know firsthand how important the Catholic Ministries Appeal is. It helped to support my formation

and gave me the freedom to really focus on my studies. Now as a priest in the Diocese, I feel blessed

that God has chosen me to make the Body and Blood of Christ present on the altar and to bring that gift to the people, bring God to the people – the same people who helped to bring me to this

point by their support.”

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life.

Thank you!

To make a donation, you can also visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org

About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies

There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy:

The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a “full Mass,” it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Commun-ion after a proper spiritual preparation.

The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, read-ings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above.

PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT cele-brated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday.

A NOTE ABOUT WINTER WEATHER

In the weeks to come, while we try to manage

snow and ice removal as best as our own re-

sources, as well as those of a professional com-

pany can provide; we simply cannot guarantee

that the entirety of the parking lot and sidewalks

will be dry and free of any risk under any and

all circumstances in winter weather.

Please use prudence and

caution when the conditions are

snowy or icy. It is better to stay

home in bad conditions, or to

come to a later Mass, rather

than risk injury.

Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program ~ Month Five ~ Developing Baby

Your spiritually adopted baby weighs over one pound now. His mother can feel him moving now. Before he was too small for her to feel. Although he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside uterine wall and dent it -- the inside wall of the uterus has no feeling. We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby's mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

February 10 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that “whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.” Your gift to the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

Feed the Poor Ministry On the third Saturday of every month, February 16th this month, immediately following the 9 o’clock Mass, in the kitchen in Monsignor Goggin Hall here at St. Matthew, a group of people get together and make a difference in the lives of some very needy people. Some of them bring wrapped sandwiches they have made at home; some bring individual bags of chips, homemade goods, or 12 packs of canned soda. Some drop off packaged cookies, or napkins, or even toiletries like mini shampoos, mouthwash, etc. Tons of clothes are donated. For over fifteen years, this merry band of volunteers has wrapped up all the generosity of this parish each and every third Saturday and has taken it to the men at the Bellevue Men’s Shelter on First Avenue and Twenty-ninth Street, next to Bellevue Hospital. How would you like to join us? Sometimes writing a check to your favorite charity doesn’t cut it. Sometimes you want to get involved and express your desire to help the poor. You don’t even have to go to the city with us. A commitment equal to your wishes could be fulfilled in this group’s effort and here’s how you can help. Make a few wrapped sandwiches of beef baloney and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Bring the food, etc., to the kitchen before Mass, if possible, but we must have all at about 9 o’clock. Our usual depar-ture is about 10 o’clock and usually we get back before 2 o’clock. Remember, you can buy chips, puddings, soda, cereal bars during your monthly run to COSTCO and flag it for the homeless. Your help or donation lights up the lives of these marginalized folks. Be inspired by the kindness and generosity of our parish and join us in this way to lighten the sting of poverty and homelessness. There is a place for you in this ministry. For information call – Frank Harnos 631- 499-0074 or Judy Maddaloni 631- 242-2183.

Dear Parishioners, The sound system in our Church is very good. However, if you are hearing impaired, you may be missing out on God’s Word. If so, we are trying to determine if you think it would be beneficial for you to use hearing assistive technology during Mass. If you are interested, please complete the form below and return it to me by Feb. 18th. This information is necessary, as we will only make this investment if we know that these devices are needed and will be used. The Parish will pay the cost of installing the system. However, because of hygiene and sani-tary reasons, we would ask you to purchase your own personal device ~ a head set and receiver, which costs $190. If this cost presents a financial problem, please call me - 631 499-8520 X124. Once you purchase it, you will bring it with you every time you come to Mass.

Benefit for the Sick and Elderly Sisters of St. Dominic Each year, my Religious Community has a benefit to support our many sick and elderly Sisters. Most of our Sisters are elderly; our median age is 80. We also have many Sisters who are over 90. We even have three Sisters who are over 100. We take a vow of poverty so my stipend from St. Matthew’s goes directly to Amityville to support these Sisters. If we work and/or worked in a Church related Ministry, we aren’t eligible to re-ceive a pension. In addition, most of our Sisters entered Religious life directly from High School, making their social security checks very minimal. Hence, it makes it very difficult to care for these Sisters who led holy lives, worked tirelessly and sacrificed so much to serve God and His people. The benefit for these Sisters is being held on March 2rd. I will sell chances in my office up to and including Thursday, Feb. 21st.. The 1st prize is $1,000, the 2nd prize is $500. Each chance is $1 and a book of 12 chances is $10. If you prefer to donate to my Community, please make out your check to Sisters of St. Dominic. I will make sure that the checks will go to Amityville. I am aware that many of you are very burdened with your own expenses and donate to many other worthy charities. I would never want to impose on you. I am grateful for any contribution and especially for your prayers. Likewise, be assured of my prayers for you and your intentions. Thank you and God bless you for always being so very good to me and for always responding to the requests I make for others, including requests for families in need.

Thank you for thinking of those in need. At present, the Parish does not need clothing, toys or baby items. Please do not drop off any of these items or clothing in the vestibule of the church.

However, the Life Center is in desperate need of winter clothing for children. The size needed for boys is from 12 months to 3T.

The size needed for girls is from newborn to 3T. Please bring baby items directly to The Life Center at

1767 Deer Park Ave. in Deer Park. The phone number is 631-243-2373.

Thank you and God bless you, Sr. Kay McCarthy

How to Crush Religious Freedom - Part 2

Homeschooling Targeted Virginia: Loudoun County Public Schools school board is seeking State legislation to alter the religious exemption of thousands of homeschooled children by requiring families to find,

"an alternative public, private, parochial and/or approved home instruction setting." The district - not the par-ent - would determine the definition of a "satisfactory education." "This action is very disturbing because it means that the school district wants new ways to control religious-exempt families," said Senior Counsel to Home School Legal Defense Foundation.

Religious Schools Targeted New York: Leaders of religious schools in N.Y. state are alarmed by the new guidelines from the state's Dept. of Education that give local public school boards broad power to inspect, oversee and intrude upon the independence of private religious schools. "There is no protection against government officials who are hostile to religious schools or who just want to eliminate the competition” wrote the NY Archdiocese.

"As those first responsible for the education of their children, parents have the right to choose a school for them which corresponds to their own convictions. This right is fundamental. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Par. 2229)
