Upcoming celebration of priesthood at St. Matthew’s

On Sunday June 25th at the 12:30 PM Mass, a newly ordained priest, Michael Bissex, will celebrate his First Mass of Thanksgiving here. He has been our Parish Seminarian for many years and we look forward to this happy event marking the beginning of what we pray will be many years of fruitful priestly service to Christ and His Church here on Long Island. A light reception will fol-low immediately after in Monsignor Goggin Hall.

This and That ...

Corpus Christi Sunday, June 18th,

again this year we will specially mark this beautiful feast in honor of Our Lord’s abiding presence in His Holy Eucharist at the 12:30 PM Mass. As last year, will be offered in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (a beautifully sung traditional Latin High Mass) with our Adult Choir, and vocalists. Booklets with the text of the Mass in English will be available. This Mass will be in place of the regular 12:30 PM Latin Mass in the Chapel and will be the High Mass of the Sunday. It will also mark the end for the summer of the Adult Choir and vocalists singing at the 11 AM Mass, which will resume in the fall.

Use Your IRA for Your Gift Now and-or for Your Estate Gift!

If you would like to make a gift now using your IRA and if:

You are at least 70 1/2 years old and don't exceed your maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions, you will not have to re-port your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution.” In most cases, you will only have to

fill out a simple form.

Very important! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first, you’ll be taxed on it. If you make an estate gift you can make your Parish a beneficiary of your IRA and your loved ones will not have

to pay income tax on their proceeds.

Jessica Lea

Being an Altar Server for the past nine years has been a memorable and rewarding experience. I first joined to serve alongside my two older brothers and cousins. Over the last several years I have been altar serv-ing with my younger sister. I am grateful for having this opportunity and for making the decision to altar

serve. St. Matthew has always been an important part of my life. Besides receiving my sacraments at St. Matthew, I was in Mommy N Me, Pre-K and the Children's Choir. I volun-teered as a teacher's assistant for the Summer Religious Ed Program for many years and I am currently a Youth Leader in the St. Matthew's Youth Group since the 9th grade. Being

part of the St. Matthew Community is a privilege I will never forget. I am currently a senior at HHH HS West. During my high school career, I have participated in Field Hockey, Basketball, Softball, School Plays, Blue Notes and Chorus. In my spare time, I enjoy playing guitar and composing music. In the fall, I will attend SUNY Geneseo to study science and education. I look forward to coming

back on my breaks to visit my St. Matthew family.

Colleen Morley

Colleen Morley has been an Altar Server for the past eight years. She wanted to be an Altar Server to learn more about the Mass and be-come closer to God. Colleen has

enjoyed serving the parish and feels that it has

helped strengthen her faith. Colleen will be gradu-ating in the Top Cohort at Commack High School in June. This past year, Colleen was captain of the swim team and Vice President of the history honor society. Colleen also played basketball, was a mem-ber of four other honor societies including the Na-

tional Honor Society, works part-time at a restau-rant in town and has earned a Girl Scout Gold Award. Next year, she will study chemical engi-neering at Miami University of Ohio.

Congratulations and God Bless our High School Senior Altar Servers & Lector Graduates!

Douglas Rochler

I have been an Altar Server for the past eight years. I chose to be an Altar Server because I wanted an active role in the Church. Through Altar Serving I have strengthened my relationship

with God and the Church. I am an American Red

Cross Lifeguard, a BSA Lifeguard and I am certified in CPR and AED. I earned my Eagle Scout with Troop

309 in Dix Hills and currently serve as an Assistant Scoutmaster with the troop. This June, I will graduate from Chaminade High School. In September, I will be an accounting major in the accelerated Master of Busi-

ness Administration program at the University of Scranton. I would like to thank our pastor, our priests, our deacons, the director, teachers and volunteers of the religious education depart-ment, Mr. & Mrs. DiGiorgio and the parishioners of St. Matthew’s for their guidance and support. To Sister Kay and Sister Bernarda - thank you for being my earliest teachers in the Catholic faith and for your continued support of my spiritual and

personal well-being.

Jude Okonkwo

I credit my successful high school years to God, my family, Chaminade High School, and St. Matthew’s. I have been heavily involved at St. Matthews for ten years. I have served as a lector, altar server, and choir member during this time.

At Chaminade High School, I have maintained an un-weighted average of 99 percent over four years. I al-so participated in a variety of activities including being the Vice President of the National Honor Society, President of

the Glee Club, School Record holder on the 4 by 100 track team, Senior Leader, and editor of both Chaminade's award-winning newspaper and literary magazine.

I've had incredible experiences including: performing at Carnegie Hall, self-publishing a book on Amazon entitled "A Journey through Poetry,” receiving a Hun-tington Town Proclamation and New York Senate Youth Leadership Award, and teaching children to swim over my summers. I am blessed to be one of the five students in the country to be accepted to all eight ivy league schools as well as other reputable colleges and full scholarship medical

programs. After careful consideration with my family, I will be attending Harvard University in the fall.

HELP SAVE THE UNBORN BABIES The Life Center of Deer Park needs YOUR help in caring for the mothers and their unborn babies. Contributions of baby clothes, food, diapers, wipes, toiletries and monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers from the Respect Life Ministry will be at the doors of the church af-ter the masses on Father's Day weekend (Sat. & Sun., June 17 & June 18) to accept your donations. The Life Center is at 1767 Deer Park Ave. across from St. Cyril & Methodius Church under the name of AAA Pregnancy Options. May God thank you for your help.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program

MONTHS SEVEN AND EIGHT – Developing Baby You are in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. He/

she is completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All he/she is doing now is gaining weight - - and making his/her mother uncomfortable with his/her size. But she is not worried. In a short time, her baby will be born. Your baby’s mother

appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby

to term.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JUDE OKONKWO In the April 7

th edition of Newsday, you may have read that one of our young parishioners, Jude

Okonkwo, was accepted to all eight Ivy league schools. Jude was also pictured and quoted in his high school newspaper. He said, “My Chaminade experience has offered me opportunities in leader-ship that were integral in preparation for college and the entry process. Most importantly, the Catho-lic formation I received here allowed me the chance to grow in to a complete man and grow close to God.” Isn’t this an admirable statement? Jude and his family are very devoted Catholics. Every night, they pray the Rosary together, recite a Litany and read the Scripture for the Liturgy for the next day. I praise this exemplary family. Here at St. Matthew’s, Jude is an outstanding Lector, Altar Server and a member of the Youth Choir. It is so obvious that Jude is a very faithful Catholic. He has been blessed by God with a brilliant mind and with great athletic and musical talent. In addition to his many talents, he has also been com-mended for his spirit of volunteerism in many activities at Chaminade including serving the disabled as a lifeguard. On May 21

st, he received the New York Senate Youth Leadership Award, a Student Star award, for

his outstanding academic achievements and dedication to his community. Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there to applaud him. However, I pray for God’s blessing on him and on all of our young graduates. May God be their guide and always paramount in the way they live their lives.

SENIORS … YES Group News Our recent trip to the Sands Casino in PA was enjoyable and even those who did not win said that they had a great time and asked when we would go again. I really wasn't planning on it, but if there is enough interest, probably in August. The plan is still in the works for the July Greenport trip. The “fly in the ointment” is that the restaurant did extensive remodeling and are somewhat behind so they have not gotten back to me on details. I can’t book the winery until I get confirmation from the restaurant. I will let you know as soon as I have any information. It is almost the end of the season for the YES group and we will be left to our own devices over the summer, so I hope that many of you will be joining us on these trips. You need not be a member of YES to attend these or any of our events. All are welcome. June 15th is our regular meeting and our last event of the season will be our luncheon at the Bonwit Inn on June 22 . Remember to pray for those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for those who protect us, and for this wonderful free country that we are blessed to live in. God bless America. See you in church. Most Holy Trinity As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity, we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this, our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them.

Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered them-selves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives a prayer intention each month.

DAILY OFFERING PRAYER: God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Him-self in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love.

RETROUVAILLE This is a French word for rediscovery. The Retrouvaille Program is a program for couples experiencing marriage problems. The program offers tools to help couples rediscover a lov-ing marriage relationship. The Retrouvaille program consists of a weekend experience fol-lowed by a series of 6 follow-up sessions over the next month or so. The main emphasis of the program is about communication in marriage. It gives couples the opportunity to redis-cover each other and to rediscover the love they had for each other. For more information, try the Retrouvaille website: www.retrouvaille.org I know some couples who have benefited from the Retrouvaille experience. Pray for our married couples and their families. “The BIBLE is the chief moral cause of all that is good, and the best correc-tor of all that is evil, in human society;"

Noah Webster, lexicographer, publisher of first U.S. dictionary Bibles Banned: Florida Amid pressure from atheist groups, Orange County Public Schools banned voluntary Bible distribution in high schools on January 16, National Reli-gious Freedom Day. The previous three years, Bibles were placed on a table in a common area for students to pick up if they chose. But when satanists and anti-religion groups announced plans to pass out their own pamphlets, such as "An X-

Rated Book - sex & obscenity in the Bible" and others, the district decided to ban Bibles along with the objectionable materials. “State of Libraries Report" for 2016 The Holy Bible finished 6th on the 10 most "challenged" books for schools and libraries. The other 9 books on the list contained demeaning sexual con-tent. "That anyone would consider banning the Bible - a book that helped shape Western thought - from public libraries, whether in your school or neighborhood, is dangerously close to the very censor-ship the First Amendment is designed to prevent," said First Liberty Institute senior counsel, Jere-my Dys. (ala.org; americanlibrariesmagazine.org; orlandosentinal.com, 2/10/15; cnsnews.com, 1/14/15) "The BIBLE - banned, burned, beloved More widely read, more frequently attacked than any oth-er book in history."
